Transfer: Guardiola responds to City-Messi links

Pep Guardiola has reiterated his desire to see Lionel Messi remain at Barcelona, with the Manchester City boss refusing to be drawn on speculation suggesting that he could be reunited with the Argentine in England.

Speculation regarding a move away from Camp Nou for a six-time Ballon d’Or winner has surfaced again over recent weeks.

It is not the first time that Messi has seen a switch mooted, with an all-time great holding obvious appeal to any team on the planet.

Reports have, however, suggested that Messi has shelved talks in the present as he waits to discover in which direction a rather rudderless Blaugrana side will head from this point.

“I’m not going to speak about transfers until the end of the season,” said the former Barca boss.

“My wish is that Messi is going to stay in Barcelona.”

Transfer: Arsenal chiefs set price for Guendouzi

Arsenal chiefs have put Matteo Guendouzi up for sale.

The French youngster was axed for victory over Southampton yesterday after clashing with Brighton players last weekend.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is said to be fed-up with Guendouzi’s attitude and has recommended he be moved on.

L’Equipe says Arsenal directors have agreed and are inviting offers starting at €40m for the midfielder.

Despite his bad press, Guendouzi is highly regarded across Europe and his availability has sparked the early interest of LaLiga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

  • Big spending Chelsea threaten Man Utd Henderson plans

Chelsea are threatening Manchester United’s long-term plans for Dean Henderson.

The Sun says Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has cash backing to stage a serious bid for the young keeper, who wants to be top dog for club and country.

Henderson, 23, has been a stand-out on loan for the Premier League’s surprise outfit Sheffield United this season.

He is guaranteed a giant pay-day whether he chooses to stay at Old Trafford or ups sticks for Stamford Bridge.

However, Chelsea hope that the chance to offer Henderson game-time in the Champions League next term will swing the tug of war their way.

That experience would boost his chances of becoming England’s first-choice keeper at the delayed Euro 2020 finals at the end of next season.

Henderson knows he is likely to be loaned out again if he commits to a new United deal.

  • Arsenal prepared to sell Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Arsenal prepared to sell Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Arsenal are prepared to sell Ainsley Maitland-Niles this summer.

The Sun says the Gunners are willing to sell Maitland-Niles to bring in funds for new faces — and want £20m for the youngster.

Right-back Maitland-Niles has slipped out of the picture under Mikel Arteta and could be on his way when the season ends.

But the home-grown ace, 22, will not go cheap as the Gunners look for a top price for him and other fringe men.

Boss Arteta may also sacrifice some of the young players who are already attracting interest in the transfer market.

  • Transfer: Mourinho eyeing Chelsea striker Giroud

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is eyeing Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud.

Giroud signed a new deal last month, but could still move on this summer after Chelsea’s swoop for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

The Daily Express says Spurs manager Mourinho remains a fan of the former Arsenal centre forward he tried to sign in January – but Chelsea would be reluctant to sell to their rivals.

Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte is thought also still keen on a deal.

Giroud, 33, has stated that he could have left Chelsea in January, but stayed after being promised games by manager Frank Lampard, and getting them before the COVID-19 crisis brought football to a halt.

But even though the Frenchman only signed his new £110,000 a week deal last month, there is still speculation that he could be sold on – because now Chelsea can command a fee of around £7m.

Transfer: Barca racing against time to raise €69m in sales

Barcelona are racing against time to raise cash from sales to balance the club’s books.

Sport says Barca must find €69m from sales this month to meet their budget target set 12 months ago.

Barca set themselves a target of raising €124m from sales this time last year and have so far managed €54.5m from the two transfer windows since.

Now the Calatans must raise another €69m in the next four weeks to meet the budget set for the end of the financial year.

A club source stated: “What is clear is that the priority is to sell well.

“We prefer not to sell rather than do it wrong.”

  • Chelsea jump into transfer battle for Hellas Verona defender

Chelsea have jumped into the transfer battle for Hellas Verona defender Marash Kumbulla.

Corriere dello Sport says Chelsea are challenging for Kumbulla.

Frank Lampard’s side have stepped up their efforts in recent days.

Kumbulla, 20, has also been linked with Premier League duo Arsenal and Everton and has been likened to Juventus legend Giorgio Chiellini.

Chelsea are ahead of several other clubs in their pursuit of the once-capped Albania international, and could secure his signature for around £18m.

  • Man Utd chief plays down big-money transfers

Man Utd chief plays down big-money transfers

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward says speculation about transfers for “hundreds of millions of pounds this summer” is ignoring the “realities that face the sport” because of the coronavirus pandemic.

United were linked with a £200m move for Tottenham striker Harry Kane and potentially spending a further £130m on England and Borussia Dortmund wide-man Jadon Sancho.

“Nobody should be under any illusions about the scale of challenge facing everyone in football and it may not be ‘business as usual’ for any clubs, including ourselves, in the transfer market this summer,” Woodward said in his opening address to a United Fans’ Forum on Friday.

“As ever our priority is the success of team, but we need visibility of the impact across the whole industry, including timings of the transfer window, and the wider financial picture, before we can talk about a return to normality.”

Woodward has been a key figure in many of the discussions among the Premier League and in Europe about how the game is going to deal with the financial impact of coronavirus.

Billions of pounds in TV income is at stake if there is no resumption in the foreseeable future, with most figures within the game anticipating any resumption, when it eventually comes, will be without spectators.

Transfer: Barca add Tammy Abraham to shopping list

La Liga giant Barcelona have added Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham to their shopping list.

Mundo Deportivo says Barca have the England international lined up as an alternative to top summer striker transfer target, Lautaro Martinez.

With Inter Milan insisting the Argentine won’t leave for less than his €111m buyout clause, Barca are exploring alternatives.

Abraham is under consideration and Barca’s interest raises the prospect of a swap involving Philippe Coutinho.

Chelsea are said to be in talks with Coutinho’s agent Kia Joorabchian this week about a move to London.

  • Chukwueze mulls future transfer to dream club, Chelsea

Having contributed 12 goals from 67 appearances for Villarreal in all competitions, the 20-year-old has been heavily linked with a future move to the Premier League.

Although the Nigerian has previously missed out on a switch to Arsenal, the attacker has revealed that one of their London rivals are his “favourite team” in England.

Speaking on Instagram Live, Chukwueze said: “My favourite team in England is Chelsea. I was supporting Chelsea when I was young.

“When Chelsea lost that Champions League final against Manchester United, I was crying all through the night.”

Having recently penned a contract extension, Chukwueze is now tied to Villarreal until 2023.
