BREAKING: Trump tested for Coronavirus, says no results yet

President Trump said Saturday that he has taken the test to determine whether he contracted the new strain of the coronavirus and was awaiting the results.

He made the announcement at a White House news conference as his administration announced it was expanding European travel restrictions to the United Kingdom and Ireland. The ban is scheduled to go into effect on Monday at midnight, although U.S. citizens will be allowed to return to the country. Britain had been exempted from a previously announced travel ban.

Trump also said he was considering whether to implement limitations on domestic travel, “specifically from certain areas,” although he did not name any.

“If you don’t have to travel, I wouldn’t do it,” he said. “We want this thing to end. We don’t want a lot of people getting infected.”

The president’s decision to get tested came after a back-and-forth over whether he should take such a step. Last weekend, Trump came into contact with two Brazilian officials at his Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago, who later reportedly tested positive for the virus.

On Friday afternoon, Trump said he would “most likely” get tested. But hours later the White House released a letter from his physician saying it was not necessary because Trump is “low risk.”

The president said Saturday at a news conference with top administration officials that he decided to move forward anyway.

“I also took the test last night,” Trump said. “I decided I should based on the press conference last night.”

Although the results were not yet available, Trump said he had his temperature checked shortly before stepping in front of the podium and it was “totally normal.”

The issue has become increasingly controversial as Trump has tried to downplay the threat of the virus even as many people around him have reported exposure. Any doubt about a president’s health can rattle the public and the financial markets, which are already badly shaken by the pandemic.

Sean P. Conley, a Navy commander and osteopathic doctor assigned to the president, wrote in his letter that Trump, while dining with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro at Mar-a-Lago last weekend “briefly came into contact with an individual who 3 days later began showing symptoms and was subsequently confirmed to have COVID-19.” The letter says Trump shook hands and took a picture with the person, separately reported as Brazilian press secretary Fabio Wajngarten.

The letter says that on Friday evening the administration learned of a second dinner guest who shared a table with Trump, “who was symptom-free until this morning,” and has now tested positive. The Brazilian Embassy reported that the person is Nestor Forster, Brazil’s acting ambassador to the United States.

Trump has sent mixed messages about the new virus, alternately telling people to remain calm, that the country soon would be free of the threat, and then on Friday declaring a national state of emergency. During a news conference announcing the declaration, he shook hands with several of the officials who shared the platform with him, despite official guidance to avoid such germ-spreading behavior.

Several Republican members of Congress as well as Trump’s incoming chief of staff, Mark Meadows, decided to self-quarantine after attending the Conservative Political Action Conference, where they interacted with a person known to be infected. Trump also spoke at the conference, held two weeks ago.

Trump was asked about his own exposure to the virus during the news conference Friday. At first, he dismissed the risk.

“I take pictures and it lasts for, literally, seconds,” he said. “I don’t know the gentleman that we’re talking about” who tested positive.

“I think they have to listen to their doctors, and I think they shouldn’t be jumping to get the test unless it’s necessary,” he said.

Later, when asked if he was “being selfish by not getting tested and potentially exposing” others, Trump shifted course, saying he would “most likely” get tested “fairly soon.”

US House Committee votes to defeat Trump’s travel ban

The US House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday voted, 22-10, to terminate President Donald Trump’s expanded travel ban and rein in presidential authority to issue such travel restrictions.

Now headed to the House floor, the bill is not expected to clear the Republican-controlled Senate, the Politico reports.

The legislation would void all of Trump’s executive actions establishing travel restrictions. It would also limit the president’s powers under Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which says the president can suspend entry of foreigners deemed “detrimental to the interests of the United States.”

Under the bill, presidents would be required in the future to consult with the secretaries of State and Homeland Security before exercising this power. The secretary of State would have to affirm, “based on credible facts,” that a barred class of foreigners poses risks to public safety, security, human rights or other factors. Congress would receive updated notifications throughout the duration of the travel restrictions.

Republicans on the committee said that the legislation would usurp the power of the president. The bill “effectively eviscerates the ability of the administration to take quick and decisive action to protect our homeland when concerns arise,” ranking member Doug Collins (R-Ga.) said.

A Republican amendment to return decision-making power from the secretary of State to the president was defeated in committee.

Seven days after he took office, Trump signed a controversial executive order denying visas to citizens of seven majority-Muslim countries. The action followed candidate Trump’s call for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.”

  • Trump likely to include Nigeria, six other countries on travel ban list

Trump likely to include Nigeria, six other countries on travel ban list

The Trump administration is planning to add Nigeria, along with six other countries to its travel ban list.

According to U.S. media reports on Tuesday, other countries to be affected are Belarus, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Sudan and Tanzania.

Under the current version of the ban, citizens of Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria and Yemen, as well as some Venezuelan officials and their relatives are blocked from obtaining a large range of U.S. immigrant and non-immigrant visas.

Under the extended ban, Nigeria and some countries will face bans only on some visa categories, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The list of countries was not final and could yet change, website Politico said.

President Donald Trump said in an interview with WSJ that he was considering adding countries to the travel ban, but declined to state which ones.

Politico said an announcement was expected as early as Monday.

A senior Trump administration official said that countries that failed to comply with security requirements, including biometrics, information-sharing and counter-terrorism measures, faced the risk of limitations on U.S. immigration.

Chad was previously covered under the existing ban but was removed in April 2018.

Citizens of the countries can apply for waivers to the ban, but they are exceedingly rare.

    Current ban affects:

    Iran: 99.4% Muslim

    Libya : 96.6% Muslim

    North Korea: not recorded

    Somalia: Large majority Muslim

    Syria: 87% Muslim, 10% Christian

    Yemen: 99.1% Muslim

    Countries being considered for ban

    Belarus: 43.8% Orthodox, 7.1% Catholic

Eritrea: believed Muslim majority, large Christian minority

    Kyrgyzstan: 90% Muslim, 7% Christian

    Myanmar: 87.9% Buddhist, 6.2% Christian

    Nigeria: 53.5% Muslim, 45.9% Christian

    Sudan: Large majority Muslim

    Tanzania: 61.4% Christian, 35.2% Muslim

    Travel ban: Atiku commends U.S

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has commended the U.S for imposing visa restrictions on Nigerians believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining democracy in Nigeria.
Abubakar made the commendation in a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, on Wednesday in Abuja.
Abubakar, who was the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the February election, commended the U.S for standing with the Nigerian people against undemocratic forces.
He urged Nigerians to remain hopeful, saying that the efforts of those that fought for true democracy would not be in vain.
NAN recalls that a statement by the Spokesman of the U.S Department of State, Morgan Ortagus, on July 23, says that as Nigeria marks the 20th anniversary of her democratic rule this year, the U.S remained committed to advancing democracy in the country.
“As Nigeria marks the twentieth anniversary of a return to democratic rule this year, we remain committed to working together to continue to advance democracy and respect for human rights and achieve greater peace and prosperity for both our nations.
“We condemn those whose acts of violence, intimidation, or corruption harmed Nigerians or undermined the democratic process.
“The U.S. government said that we would consider consequences – including visa restrictions – For individuals responsible for undermining the Nigerian democratic process or for organising election-related violence.
“To that end, the Secretary of State is imposing visa restrictions on Nigerians believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining democracy in Nigeria,” he said.

  • Despite Buhari's travel ban, Obanikoro, Omisore recover passports from EFCC, jet to US

Despite Buhari's travel ban, Obanikoro, Omisore recover passports from EFCC, jet to US

Indications emerged on Sunday that a former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, has retrieved his passports from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

This is despite a directive by the Federal Government that 50 persons under investigations for fraud exceeding N50m are restricted from travelling.

Quoting an anonymous in the EFCC, The Punch reports that Obanikoro, who has an American passport and a Nigerian one, met certain conditions before his passports were returned to him.

According to the source, “Obanikoro was able to return over N100m out of the money he received from Dasuki. He showed genuine commitment to returning more money and assist the EFCC with investigations and his passports were returned to him.

The fact that the commission returned the passports to him does not mean that he has been cleared.”

Recall that Obanikoro has been under investigation since 2016 for allegedly receiving N4.7bn from the embattled former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), in 2014.

The former minister allegedly handed over about N1.3bn to former Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State and another N1.3bn to the then Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in Osun State in 2014, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

After Fayose was arrested by the EFCC last Tuesday, however, it was learnt that Obanikoro travelled to the US.

Obanikoro travelled out on Wednesday evening, saying he wanted to go for medical treatment. He gave no date when he would return,” a source said.

The former minister, who has defected to the All Progressives Congress, had declared his intention to run for the Lagos West senatorial district election but shelved his ambition at the last minute.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that Omisore had also recovered his passport from the commission.

The former federal lawmaker was arrested by the EFCC in 2016 for allegedly receiving money from Dasuki through Obanikoro.

He subsequently returned N300m to the EFCC but his passport was seized by the commission.

Omisore had written to the EFCC, requesting that his passport be returned to him so that he could travel for medical treatment but his request was turned down.

However, the Osun State deputy governor, who recently contested the governorship election of Osun State on the platform of the Social Democratic Party, entered into an undisclosed agreement with the APC when the election was declared inconclusive.

He was reported to have entered into a series of negotiations with the APC leadership to support the APC candidate in the poll, Gboyega Oyetola, but the details of the negotiations were never made public.

It was during the negotiations with the leadership of the APC that Omisore was said to have recovered his passport from the anti-graft agency.

Omsiore’s media aide, Mr. Jide Fakorede, had said recently that his boss was no longer under investigation by the EFCC and that he was free to travel.

He had said, “Senator Iyiola Omisore was wrongly accused in 2016 and he surrendered himself to the EFCC for investigation and was given a ‘clean bill of health’ by the anti-graft body after a thorough investigation.

It is on record that no case was instituted against him in any court of our land and neither was he arraigned before any court either. He has been enjoying his freedom and has even presented himself for election into public office passing through all security screenings. So we ask, what is the noise about?

The basis for placement on the watch list and travel ban is to ensure that those answering EFCC charges are held within the country and for someone not having a current case with the anti-graft agency, there may be no basis to restrict his movement.”

Attempts to speak with the spokesman for the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, proved abortive as he did not respond to phone calls on Saturday.

When contacted on the telephone, Omisore rejected calls and subsequently sent a text message saying, “Sorry, I can’t talk right now.”

  • EXCLUSIVE: Why Adamawa PDP flag bearer, Umaru Fintiri’s name appeared on Buhari's travel ban list

Investigations by TNG has revealed why a former acting governor of Adamawa State and governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s name appeared on President Muhammadu Buhari’s list of 50 high profile Nigerians banned from travelling outside the shores of the country.
Recall that the president last week Saturday issued the ban under Executive Order 6 (EO6).
The travel restriction followed the judicial affirmation of the constitutionality and legality of the Executive Order 6 (EO6).
The watch-list and restriction were put in place pending the conclusion of the cases against those affected.
    Why Fintiri made the list
Checks by TNG revealed that Fintiri who was also a former speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly has been in and out of the court for allegations bothering on fraud and bribery shortly after leaving office as acting governor in 2016.
However, like some other people on the list, Fintiri’s trial has spanned over two years with several adjournments and no judgement in sight.
Having emerged as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa in a keenly contested election amongst other former governors in the state on October 1, Fintiri’s hope of becoming the next governor of Adamawa State may suffer serious setback with the ban.
    The Aisha Buhari’s connection
Recall that the wife of the President, Aisha Buhari also has a stake in the coming election in Adamawa.
Despite the fact that the incumbent governor, Bindo Jibrila is of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and also indicated interested in a second term ticket, the president’s wife is rooting for his immediate younger brother, Mahmud Halilu Ahmad as the party’s flag bearer in 2019.
Aisha Buhari in a straightforward statement shortly after the primaries which edged out his brother condemned the primaries while also indicting the party chairman, Adams Oshiomhole for presiding over such ‘impunity’. She also threatened to boycott party activities if the controversies which thrailed the APC primaries were not resolved before the deadline issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Aside the president’s wife, a former chairman of the EFCC, Nuhu Ribadu also expressed interest in the top Adamawa job. Ribadu, a former presidential aspirant also condemned the primaries which produced the incumbent governor Jibrin as its flag bearer and called for its immediate cancellation.
More so, both Aisha Buhari’s brother and Ribadu lost their chances as the APC Appeals Panel submitted its report to the National Secretariat on Thursday.
However, according to anonymous sources, Aisha’s brother may likely defect to the the PDP in a desperate attempt to achieve his governorship ambition. Since the party had already chosen Fintiri as its flag bearer, sources claim that concerted efforts were been made to ensure
his (Fintiri) disqualification to allow for a change of name of the party’s flag bearer with INEC. This was not difficult to achieve as Fintiri still has loads of pending corruption cases before the EFCC.
    Fintiri’s ‘sins’
Specifically, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/131/2016, alleged that the former governor had between October 2014 and August 2015, diverted public funds to the tune of N1.9billion.
The anti-graft agency also charged a firm that allegedly served as conduit pipe through which the fund was siphoned, Mayim Constructions & Properties Limited, as the 2nd defendant before the court.

EFCC alleged that Fintiri had at various dates, within the ten months the fraud was perpetrated, transferred funds from account number: 0313000301 domiciled at EcoBank Plc operated by Timeplex Nigeria Ltd, into account number: 5742019591 domiciled at the same bank but operated by the 2nd defendant.
Aside allegation that he used N220million to acquire a property at No 7 Gana Street, Maitama Abuja, Fintiri was said to have within three months he held sway as acting governor of Adamawa State, repaid a N550m loan he secured from Ecobank for the acquisition of a Tea plantation farm from Nigeria Agricultural bank in Taraba State.
EFCC said its investigations revealed that the bank had initially allowed the defendant to repay the loan within twelve months. It said that Fintiri attempted to disguise the origin of the funds which the agency described as “proceeds of an unlawful act, to wit: bribery and corruption”.

The prosecution maintained that the defendant committed an offence contrary to sections 15(2) (a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011, as amended in 2012 and punishable under section 15(3) and (4) of the same Act. Count-five in the charge dated June 16 and signed by the Deputy Director, Legal & Prosecution Department of the EFCC, Mr. Sylvanus Tahir, read: “That you, Ahmadu Umaru (Alias Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri) and Mayim Construction and Properties Ltd, between the 3rd of June 2014 an 4th of August 2015 in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did retain in your US Dollars account number 5742019601 domicile at Ecobank Plc, the aggregate sum of $4, 830, 000.00 (US Dollar Four Million eight hundred and thirty thousand) which sum you know form part of proceeds of unlawful act to wit: corruption and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 15(2) (a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 as amended in 2012 and punishable under section 15(3) and (4) of the same Act”.
49 others affected by the ban
TNG reports that apart from Fintiri, others on the list include; ex-governors Saminu Turaki (Jigawa), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Adebayo Alao-Akala (Oyo), Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Rasheed Ladoja (Oyo), Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia), Danjuma Goje (Gombe), Attahiru Bafarawa (Sokoto), Muazu Babangida Aliyu (Niger); Chimaroke Nnamani (Enugu); Sule Lamido (Jigawa); Gbenga Daniel (Ogun); and Ibrahim Shehu Shema (Katsina).
The ex-ministers are Nenadi Usman, Bashir Yuguda, Jumoke Akinjide; Bala Mohammed; Abba Moro and Femi Fani-Kayode.
    Others include a former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh; ex- Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral A. D. Jibrin; a former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Mohammed Dikko Umar; a former Inspector-General of Police, Sunday Ehindero; and a former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu; Chairman Emeritus of AIT/ Raypower, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi; Waripamowei Dudafa (a former Special Assistant (Domestic) to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan); a former Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Innocent Umezulike; a former judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia;
Also on the list are a former National Publicity Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh; Chief Jide Omokore; Ricky Tarfa; and Dele Belgore (SAN).
Most of the affected persons are currently facing trial for alleged corrupt practices in different courts.
The list was generated from cases and proceedings filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Nigeria Police, and 17 other agencies.
The document indicated that many of those affected had earlier been placed on similar legal restrictions by the courts and security agencies including restriction of movement, seizure of passport, temporary forfeiture of assets, freezing of accounts and others.
Executive Order not witch hunt – Presidency
Reacting to condemnations that trailed the executive order, Senior Special Assistant to the President (Media & Publicity), Mallam Garba Shehu in a statement on Sunday said: “Following the instant judicial affirmation of the constitutionality and legality of the Executive Order 6 (EO6), President Muhammadu Buhari has mandated the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice to implement the Order in full force.
“To this end, a number of enforcement procedures are currently in place by which the Nigeria Immigration Service and other security agencies have placed no fewer than 50 high profile persons directly affected by EO6 on watch-list and restricted them from leaving the country pending the determination of their cases.
“Also, the financial transactions of these persons of interest are being monitored by the relevant agencies to ensure that the assets are not dissipated and such persons do not interfere with, nor howsoever corrupt the investigation and litigation processes.
“It is instructive to note that EO6 was specifically directed to relevant law enforcement agencies to ensure that all assets within a minimum value of N50 million or equivalent, subject to investigation or litigation are protected from dissipation by employing all available lawful means, pending the final determination of any corruption-related matter.
“The Buhari administration reassures all well-meaning and patriotic Nigerians of its commitment to the fight against corruption, in accordance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the general principles of the Rule of Law.
“Accordingly, this administration will uphold the rule of law in all its actions and the right of citizens would be protected as guaranteed by the Constitution.
“We, therefore, enjoin all Nigerians to cooperate with the law enforcement authorities towards ensuring a successful implementation of the Executive Order 6 which is a paradigm-changing policy of the Federal Government in the fight against corruption.”

  • Presidency to critics: Go to court if you feel uncomfortable with Buhari's travel ban

Presidency to critics: Go to court if you feel uncomfortable with Buhari's travel ban

The Presidency on Sunday said those that are uncomfortable over the implementation of the controversial Executive Order 6, which imposes a travel ban on about 50 prominent citizens facing corruption and money laundering charges should approach any court of law.
Rights will be respected, the Presidency said, adding that the Executive order is neither political “nor is there any political gain behind its activation.”
The clarification came amid the growing row over the Executive Order which President Muhammadu Buhari ordered Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami to implement to the letter.
The Atiku Campaign Organisation joined the peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to castigate the action.
The organisation said the implementation of the Order could lead to capital flight and return the economy into recession.
Lagos lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) advised the governmet to withdraw the Executive Order and allow the courts stop suspected looters from travelling.
Some lawyers have argued that since the court has okayed the Order, a travel ban under it is not out of place.
The Alliance for New Nigeian (ANN) described the Ordeer as “dictatorial”, adding that there are enough safeguards in the constitution to take care of corruption with the guarantee for freedom of movement for citizens.
But presidential spokesnam Garba Shehu said “this is the first time any government is taking such a key decision to fight corruption”, adding that “EO 6 is not only revolutionary to the efforts to rid Nigeria of corruption but a manifestation of systemic changes that are required to to make necessary adjustments as we carry on with the war against corruption.”
He explained that “the very essence of the order is to make for speedy trials and conclusion of graft cases. The order is not political and there is no political gain behind its activation.”
These high profile cases we are talking about have been ongoing for between seven and 10 years with no end in sight. These case were mostly originated by administrations other than this one.
What is clear is that the access to these resources by the suspects has enabled them to be in a position to sometimes compromise investigation, prosecution and trial. In most of the cases, the courts are held in a helpless position by legal acrobatics paid for from corrupt enrichment by the suspects.
The new measures put in place should compel everyone involved to make for a speedy conclusion of these cases. If it is your money, you have it back. If it belongs to the public, it goes back to the treasury.
The question of the constitutionality of the restriction order is answered by the fact that a court of the land has given government a clean sheet. The Executive Order is legal and constitutional and therefore implementable.
One of the cardinal objectives of the government under our constitution is to fight corruption. Fighting corruption is a responsibility and obligation upon the government.
On the list of the individuals affected by the ban, Shehu said: “I want to confirm to you that we have not issued any list and we are not doing so.
These cases that are well known and to to say this or that name is on it will open the door to further accusations, including trial by media.
The Immìgration Service and other security agencies have the mandate of the President to carry out enforcement and they will do so giving due respects to individual rights, in line with the constitution.”
The Buhari Media Group (BMG) also rose in defence of the EO 6, saying it symbolises the efforts by the Presidency to re-invigorate the war against corruption through judicial process.
BMG Chairman Niyi Akinsiju, in an interview last night, said: “I have seen a number of responses from the main opposition party. What exactly is the issue? Mr President has made pronunciation through Executive Order in emphasising the judicial process in limiting and containing corruption in Nigeria. The spirit of the Executive Order has a strong judicial intervention.
The powers to pronounce forfeiture of assets and to ban suspects under investigation from travelling outside the country are simply within the confine of the court. Banning these 50 individuals from travelling is actually in consonance with the judicial process that is already being undertaken by the relevant agencies of the government.
What is apparent is that the corrupt ones have accepted the manipulation of judiciary and the judicial process, but now things are changing.”
Akinsiju explained that one of the tools to limit the manipulation of the judicial process is the Executive Order.
When your assets are forfeited and you cannot travel outside the country, you will opt for a speedy trial instead of delaying it,” he said.

  • Travel ban: Fani-Kayode reacts, reveals why he can’t travel out of Nigeria

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode has reacted to President Muhammadu Buhari’s Executive Order 6 banning him, Atiku Abubakar’s campaign Director General, a dead Chief Judge, and 48 others from travelling out of the country.
TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Buhari signed Executive Order 6 banning Fani-Kayode; Atiku’s campaign DG, Otunba Gbenga Daniel; late Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Professor I.A Umezulike, and a host of others from travelling abroad for alleged corrupt practices.
The list was generated from cases and proceedings filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Nigeria Police, and 17 other agencies. The watch-list and restriction were put in place pending the conclusion of the cases against those affected.
“I could not give a damn that my name is on the list of 50 members of the opposition and prominent Nigerians that have been placed on a travel ban because nothing that Buhari does surprises me.
“I have not left Nigeria since 2008 because my passport has been with the EFCC and the courts for the last 10 years and they have refused to give it to me and let me to travel. Those on the travel-ban list that need to travel abroad for medical reasons or to see their loved ones are the ones I feel sorry for.
“For me, travel ban or no travel ban, I have no intention of leaving Nigeria anytime soon because I am one of those that will be on the forefront in the struggle to liberate our country and ensure that we get Buhari out of power over the next few months,” Fani-Kayode stated on Sunday.
Explaining the government’s action in a statement on Saturday, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu said, “Following the instant judicial affirmation of the constitutionality and legality of the Executive Order 6 (EO6), President Muhammadu Buhari has mandated the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice to implement the Order in full force.
“To this end, a number of enforcement procedures are currently in place by which the Nigeria Immigration Service and other security agencies have placed no fewer than 50 high profile persons directly affected by EO6 on watch-list and restricted them from leaving the country pending the determination of their cases.”
A top government official, who reportedly spoke to The Nation newspaper in confidence, said there is no cause for alarm on E06.
The source said: “The ban is not different from the conditions given by the court in granting these accused persons bail. The E06 is like a codification of steps to prevent those on trial for alleged corrupt practices from tampering with assets.
“Some of these accused persons used to go to court for permission before they can travel out of the country. The E06 is not a new thing but instead of all agencies working at cross-purposes, a list was generated and backed with the Executive Order.
“Some of those on trial, especially the Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs) had been selling their assets. What will they return after being convicted?”

Atiku reacts to travel ban on 50 high-profile Nigerians

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar has faulted the Executive Order 6 signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Waziri of Adamawa said the signing of the Executive order can lead to another recession in Nigeria.
Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, had disclosed that no fewer than 50 persons have been placed on a travel ban by the Administration.
Shehu also disclosed that those on the watch list were not allowed to sell their assets worth N50 million.
But a statement signed by the Atiku Presidential Campaign Organisation reads: “Our attention has been drawn to the statement by the Presidency banning 50 unnamed Nigerians from travelling out of the country, purportedly on the strength of Executive Order 6. Their crime being that they are suspected of having property overseas and are involved in tax dodging or other alleged financial infractions.
“We must be unequivocal in saying that we abhor any act of criminality, financially or otherwise, but the rule of law must be our guide at all times or society will descend to anarchy. Thus, we find it most undemocratic that in a nation governed by the rule of law, a President who swore an oath to abide by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, does this.
“If past events are to be the judge, these 50 individuals will conveniently be critics and opponents of the Buhari administration. This is nothing short of intimidation ahead of the 2019 elections. This is what the Buhari administration did in Osun where they froze the accounts of the Adeleke family and then illegally and clandestinely paid N16.7 billion to the Osun state government to facilitate daylight electoral robbery.
“The Nigerian Constitution guarantees every Nigerian citizen freedom of movement and freedom of association. This Constitutional right cannot be taken away except by a court order.
“If the Buhari administration wants to curtail the rights of Nigerians, then they must go to court and obtain a court order. Anything short of this is unconstitutional and extrajudicial.
“This sudden dictatorial act brings to mind President Buhari’s comments for which he was condemned by the international community and by the generality of Nigerians.
“While delivering an address at the annual general conference of the Nigerian Bar Association on August 26, 2018, President Buhari has said ‘where national security and public interest are threatened or there is a likelihood of their being threatened, the individual rights of those allegedly responsible must take second place, in favour of the greater good of society.’
“That was not only a faulty interpretation of the constitution, the statement also betrays the dictatorial and authoritarian mindset of President Buhari because only he gets to decide who and what threatens national security.
“It is a throwback to Buhari’s evil Decree Number Two of 1984 which criminalised truth telling if it did not please Buhari, proving that dictators can grow old, but they can’t grow into democrats.
“Under the Buhari administration, Nigeria has witnessed an unprecedented capital flight out of the nation to the extent that we are not even listed amongst the top ten recipients of Foreign Direct Investment in Africa in the latest ranking by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. It is salient to note that we were number one under the last Peoples Democratic Party administration.
“Funny enough, the Buhari administration were unable to stop Abdulrasheed Maina, their financier, from leaving the country after he was illegally brought back by them and reinstated to the federal service with double promotion.
“It is precisely this type of draconian orders that have chased investors away from Nigeria and it is precisely why Nigerians will chase this recession friendly government away from power on February 16, 2019, so we can begin the job of Getting Nigeria Working Again.”

Also on the list are a former national publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh; Chief Jide Omokore; Ricky Tarfa; and Dele Belgore (SAN).

Most of the affected persons are currently facing trial for alleged corrupt practices in different courts.

The Nation reports that the list was generated from cases and proceedings filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Nigeria Police, and 17 other agencies.
The document reportedly indicated that many of those affected had earlier been placed on similar legal restrictions by the courts and security agencies including restriction of movement, seizure of passport, temporary forfeiture of assets, freezing of accounts and others.
Explaining the government’s action in a statement on Saturday, October 13, senior special assistant to the president (Media & Publicity), Mallam Garba Shehu said: “Following the instant judicial affirmation of the constitutionality and legality of the Executive Order 6 (EO6), President Muhammadu Buhari has mandated the Attorney-General of the Federation and the minister of justice to implement the Order in full force.
“To this end, a number of enforcement procedures are currently in place by which the Nigeria Immigration Service and other security agencies have placed no fewer than 50 high profile persons directly affected by EO6 on watch-list and restricted them from leaving the country pending the determination of their cases.”
A top government official, who reportedly spoke to the newspaper in confidence, said there is no cause for alarm on E06.
