Nigerian celebrity breakups dominate social media scene

About three Nigerian celebrity marriages made it to social media during the week over divorce, alleged separation, and extramarital affairs.

While keeping tab on weekly trends, however, observed that the week had kicked off with record-breaking achievement for a Nigerian singer before the marriage woes became the talk of the town.

On June 26, Nigerian singer and record producer, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, emerged as the Best International Act winner at the BET Awards 2022, held at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles.

Tems becomes the first female Nigerian artiste to have won the category, joining the likes of Ice Prince, Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy as Nigerians who have won the BET Awards.

On Monday, the Judiciary sector took the scene as President Muhammadu Buhari swore in Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

The swearing in of Ariwoola, who is the next most senior in the hierarchy of the Supreme Court, as the new CJN, followed the resignation of Justice Tanko Muhammed on health ground.

On Tuesday, Nollywood actress, ChaCha Eke, announced the end of her marriage to her husband, Austin Faani.

The actress made the announcement on her instagram page while alleging instances of violence.

She wrote, “LEAVE NOW ALIVE OR LEAVE AS A CORPSE. Many have died pretending all is well whilst wishing, hoping and praying for a better tomorrow.

“I don’t want to “die” or go inexplicably “missing”. I sincerely and publicly apologise for living a lie these past years. True to random speculations, there has been trouble in my perceived paradise.”

It is the second time in two years that the Nollywood actress will be announcing separation from her filmmaker husband, whom she got married to in 2013.

On the international scene, American RnB singer, R. Kelly, was on Wednesday sentenced to 30 years in prison for sex trafficking and abuse of young girls.

On Thursday, Abdul Bello, popularly know as JJC Skillz, announced separation from his actress wife, Funke Akindele-Bello.

JJC Skillz made a post on his Instagram page, citing how his last two years in the marriage had been “extremely difficult”.

He wrote “Dear Friends and family, I need to let you know that Funke and Ihave separated. While it lasted, we shared a lot of things together and have created 2 beautiful children.

“The last two years have been extremely difficult for us. I know I have tried my best to fix things but I believe it is beyond repair now. 3 months ago and at Funke’s insistence, I moved out of the house and apart from AMVCA, I have not been able to get Funke to sit down in an amicable manner to discuss the future of our relationship.

“I’m making this announcement so that the public is clear that we both are pursuing separate lives. We still have issues that need to be addressed such as the custody and wellbeing of our children which is paramount as well as business interests which need to be disentangled but I have no doubt that these will be resolved one way or the other.”

The story subsequently began to generate different reactions as some felt bad for the break up while some fans tagged it as a publicity stunt.

On the same day, details of what led to the separation of Nigerian singer, Paul Okoye of P. Square from his wife,  Anita Okoye, began to trend on social media platforms.

It, however, became full blown on Friday when the court papers filed by Anita were shared on social media where Paul was accused of extramarital affairs.

On Saturday, award winning singer, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, clocked 31, and had encomiums poured on him by his fans.

The Grammy winner also celebrated his birthday on stage at the Sumol Summer Fest in Portugal.

A fan, on Twitter,  @akojireal, tweeted, “Happy birthday Damini. If I could listen to only one artiste for the rest of my life, I will gladly choose you without second thoughts. Your music and journey inspires me.”

We were making a skit, not eating faeces in trending video – Comedians

Three comedians in Imo, who were thought to have been eating their faeces in a trending video, have denied doing so, saying that they were only making a comedy skit.

Great Egbuchulam, Solomon Mbata and Arinze Mbah aged 21, 20 and 21 respectively debunked the video reports while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Owerri on Wednesday.

They denied having anything to do with internet fraud, adding that they were completely misunderstood after an anonymous passerby recorded the video, causing it to go viral on social media.

Egbuchulam, popularly known as “Clean-Mumu” and Mbata popularly known as “Baggy_Universe” identified themselves to be content creators and members of a Comedy crew known as “Funny Embassy”.

Also, Mbah, popularly known as “Dat_Skirtboi” admitted that the video was irritating, but said that it was intended to portray the ills of society and the inordinate quest of today’s youths to make quick money.

He called on youths to desist from internet fraud and money rituals but rather, to work hard and align with legitimate means of making money.

”We were not eating faeces, just as many persons believe but, we were portraying the extent to which many persons, especially youths, have gone in a bid to acquire wealth,” he said.
Also, Mbata advised youths to avoid the lure of seeking wealth through diabolic means as the consequences outweighed the possible gains.

Also speaking, Egbuchulam advised youths to learn skills with which they could fend for themselves adding that this would help distract them from negative thoughts.

He however, called on government to introduce more youth-friendly poverty alleviation initiatives, noting that hardship could plunge young persons into money rituals and internet fraud.

“Government cannot afford to overlook the concerns of youths because the pressure is high on them, from friends and family.

“With government intervention, such vices will be reduced to a barest minimum,” he said.

Reacting, Police Public Relations Officer in Imo, CSP Michael Abattam said he was not aware of the trending video but promised to look into the matter.

GOOD NEWS! Virologist affirm Nigeria’s hot temperature may suppress spread of Coronavirus

A Consultant Virologist, Dr Adeola Fowotade, has said that hot tropical climate as obtainable in Nigeria could help suppress the spread of coronavirus COVID-19.

Fowotade of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, said this while speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan.

According to her, some experts think the COVID-19 may behave like the influenza virus, which is a seasonal disease common in colder climate, making Nigeria too hot for coronavirus to spread.

“That is an extrapolation from what happened with influenza virus also known as the flu, which is most prevalent in colder climate during winter.

“We believe that if COVID-19 is a Respiratory Tract Infection, probably it will follow the same pattern.

“There is a very high chance there will be some remission as temperature gets warmer in those temperate places.

“But for us with tropical climate, we believe that this outbreak might not go on for too long and might abate very soon.

“This is because the droplets generated by the virus cannot travel far and this virus is an envelope virus.

“Envelop viruses are very susceptible and cannot survive very long in hot climate,” she said.

Fowotade, however, emphasised that everyone including healthcare workers must continue to be vigilant and comply with standard hygiene rules.

“We should still continue to take precautions because we found that this virus has a very high transmissibility, that is, when one person is infected that person has a high chance of infecting four more people.

“It is very important that we ensure that we prevent infections by observing best precautionary and preventive measures,” she said.

Also, Dr Kemi Adekanbi, a Consultant Infectious Disease Physician at UCH, said that everyone should practice good hygiene for protection against infections.

According to her, good hygiene practices include regular hand washing with soap and water, cough and sneezing etiquette and maintaining a safe distance from people when they sneeze or cough.

NAN reports that COVID-19 was first identified in humans in Wuhan, China in December 2019.

Although it has since spread to over 50 countries and territories, killed more than 3,000 people and infected over 90,000 worldwide, the World Health Organisation is yet to declare the viral disease a global pandemic.

Dr Tedros Adhanom, Director-General of the WHO, had on Monday said: “we appreciate that people are debating whether this is a pandemic or not.

“We are monitoring the situation every moment of every day, and analyzing the data.

“I have said it before and I’ll say it again, WHO will not hesitate to describe this as a pandemic if that’s what the evidence suggests.”

  • FG arraigns ex-NITDA DG over alleged N50m contract scam

FG arraigns ex-NITDA DG over alleged N50m contract scam

The office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), on Tuesday arraigned a former Director-General of National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Peter Jack, in an FCT High Court, Apo over alleged N50 million contract scam.

Jack, 58, who resides at No.17, Gana Street, Maitama, Abuja is charged with two counts of criminal breach of trust and cheating.

The prosecution counsel, Mrs Chelsy Emezina, told the court that sometime in 2015, the complainant, Tunde Ajala, transferred N50 million to the defendant as payment to award him a contract worth over N1 billion.

Emezina said that Ajala accepted to pay the sum of N100 million to be awarded the contract and agreed to pay the balance of another N50 million when the contract was finally awarded.

The prosecutor in addition, alleged that the contract was never awarded and instead, the defendant converted the money to his personal use and every effort to recover the money had proved abortive.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

The defendant however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Mr O. A. Ekpenta, the defendant’s counsel, prayed the court to allow him move his application for his client’s bail.

Emezina, who objected to the application on grounds that she was just served the motion in court, said that she needed time to reply her counter motion.

The Judge, Justice Slyvanus Oriji, in response, said the motion was not ripe to be taken.

Ekpenta proceeded to withdraw the said motion and opted to make oral application for bail.

When asked by the judge if she had an objection, the prosecutor said she had no objection for the withdrawal.

Oriji in turn granted the application and struck out the motion.

The defence counsel then proceeded to make oral application for bail for his client in the most liberal terms citing Sections 156 and 162 of Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015, as the basis for his application.

Emezina further objected to the bail on the grounds that the defendant will jump bail if granted and instead prayed the court for accelerated hearing.

In ruling, Oriji admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N20 million with two sureties in like sum.

He directed that the sureties (one of whom must be a civil servant), must depose to affidavit of means, resides within the court’s jurisdiction and their addresses verified by the court’s registrar.

He adjourned the case until April 30 and May 18 for hearing.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that the defendant had earlier been arraigned at a Magistrates’ Court in Mpape, Abuja on Oct. 4, 2019 before the matter was withdrawn and later transferred to the office of the AGF.

  • Birthday Moments: How I felt when my old girlfriend came to me for prayers – Adeboye

Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye is marking his 78th birthday today. His church members who call him Daddy G.O, that is General Overseer (of the Redeemed Christian Church of God) are paying tributes to him. Politicians, captains of industry and many others who admire him are already showering praises on him like confetti.

In other words, it goes without saying that Adeboye is admired all over because of his pious disposition. He preaches against sin. However, the Pastor is humble and blunt enough to reveal that he was as lustful as every raw young man. He had girlfriends too.

This was revealed by Bisi Daniel, journalist, writer, public relations consultant and author of Stories of Pastor E.A. Adeboye, in a tribute (“Pastor Adeboye at 78: A journalist’s experience with him”).

    In Adeboye’s own words:

“Before I was born again, I was a very rotten boy. I had two things going for me that made it extremely easy to have girlfriends. I was a sportsman and I was also a photographer. I’m yet to meet a lady who can say no when you say you want to snap her; I haven’t met one, particularly if you have the right kind of language.

Things like “Ahh, whoa! What am I looking at? Where has this sun been hidden? I have never seen this sunshine before. Do you mind if I record you?

You know the elders have a saying; they say the mouth of the old woman looks like she never sucked breast. Hmm, when you see Pastor Adeboye you think he was born a saint. No, no, no, Thank God for His power to change. I had so many girl friends that at a stage I didn’t even know the number. And for each girlfriend there was a birthday. I had so many birthdays, one birthday for each girlfriend. I am just telling you this to let you know that God can pick one up from the pit of hell and make him or her His servant. Among all these girlfriends, there was one that was closest to me.

But after some time we separated: she went her way, I went my way. She got married, I got married. But in the meantime, I had become born again.

The lady had a child that was born lame, so somebody told her if she took the child to a certain pastor he would pray for the child to walk. So she came to the mission house.

I was in the living room but she saw some people on the veranda who asked for the pastor and was told I was inside. So she opened the door and saw me. Laughter, laughter, laughter.

And you know what old flames do, ‘Aaaah long time no see? Where have you been, how has life been treating you, excetra, excetra?

When we finished, she said, ‘I want to see the pastor.’

I said, ‘Yes, I am the pastor.’

    ‘You?’ She asked, surprised

    ‘Yes,’ I said

She shouted, ‘You will pray and God will answer?’

Let somebody shout Hallelujah! I prayed and she got her miracle.”

Now Adeboye sticks only to wife, Folu

    The Man, Adeboye

Adeboye was born on 2 March, 1942 in Ifewara, near Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. He went to the University of Nigeria, (UNN) in Nsukka but because of the Nigeria Civil War, he completed his first degree in the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics in 1967. That same year, according to writings by his admirers on him, he married Foluke Adenike. They have four children namely: Adeolu Adeboye, Bolu Adubi (nee Adeboye), Leke Adeboye and Dare Adeboye.

“In 1969, he obtained a master’s degree in hydrodynamics drom the University of Lagos . He joined the Redeemed Christian Church of God in 1973 and began interpreting Yoruns to English by Pastor Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi. In 1975, he obtained a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Lagos. He holds a position as Professor of Mathematics at University of Lagos.

He was ordained a pastor of Redeemed Church in 1977. He became General Overseer of the church in 1981. For three years, he filled the role part-time at University of Ilorin before giving up his university position to preach full-time.”

US jury indicts three Nigerians over theft of $348,000

Three Nigerians have been indicted by a US federal grand jury in Bismarck, North Dakota, after investigators said they stole $348,000 from a Dickinson company through a complicated computer fraud scheme.

U.S. Attorney Drew Wrigley announced that federal court documents were unsealed on Feb. 10, revealing that the federal grand jury has indicted Kolawole Bamidele Akande, a/k/a Patric Elis Ferguson, Olawale Sule a/k/a Brand King Mohamed; and Babatope Joseph Aderinoye a/k/a Wilson Tidwel.

They were indicted on charges of Conspiracy to Commit Bank Fraud; Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud; Conspiracy to Commit Mail Fraud; Conspiracy to Commit Money Laundering; Mail Fraud; and Money Laundering.

The indictment alleges that the defendants fraudulently obtained checks from the unnamed Dickinson company, based in North Dakota, through the mail and deposited these checks in fraudulently obtained accounts in financial institutions in Texas.

Once the money was available, the defendants withdrew or transferred the funds to hide where the money came from, the indictment says.

“While the alleged financial scheme in this case is complex, our investigative team has pieced this string of fraudulent acts together and we look forward to presenting our evidence in court,” U.S. Attorney Drew Wrigley said.

Sule’s arraignment was held before federal Judge Clare Hochhalter, on Friday, Feb. 28, in Bismarck.

Sule, who was arrested Dec. 18, under a separate indictment for money laundering, made an initial appearance in federal court in the Northern District of Texas. The court there ordered the U.S. Marshals Service to take Sule to North Dakota.

This case is being investigated by the FBI; U.S. Postal Inspection Service; Homeland Security Investigations, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Northern District and Eastern District of Texas, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan O’Konek.

  • TNG specials: Underwear, ‘everything-red’ on high sales as Valentine arrives

TNG specials: Underwear, ‘everything-red’ on high sales as Valentine arrives

    – Val Gift prediction by sex: Most men to get boxers gift; gift cards, perfumes for ladies

Valentine’s Day, also known as Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, the day is celebrated annually on February 14 although it is not observed as a public holiday in any country. It originated as a Western Christian feast day honouring one or two early saints named Valentinus.

The day is recognised as a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and romantic love in many regions around the world (Nigeria inclusive).

Here in Nigeria, the celebration is mostly characterised by the wearing of red clothes by celebrants and exchange of gift items. On the perspective of gift exchange, TheNewsGuru (TNG) visited Wuse Market in Abuja, Balogun market in Lagos Island, spoke with traders and arrived at products that were on hot sales as Valentine finally arrives.

    Everything Red sells:

It is common to see heavy displays of items branded red during Valentine celebration (Especially at shopping malls as well as wayside shops) in Nigeria – every trader knows this is what sells.

The red paraphernalia includes cars, gift cards, flowers, chocolates, toffees, teddy bears, and other attractive packages. Red attires, shoes, and bags bracelets, among others, are all displayed openly dramatically to aggressively fascinate and appeal to customers.

In an interview conducted by TheNewsGuru(TNG), Mrs Olamide Arowolo, a trader at Wuse market disclosed that she specifically sought for products packaged in red because it is the best language colour of the Valentine season.

She added: “ In fact, most of the items I am selling here today, are not my usual sales. Before I only sell men and women underwear, but because of the commercial opportunity Valentine brings, I added sales of gift items and the patronage has really been on the high side of late; I am smiling to the bank.”

Asked what items Nigerians are buying most for the Vals, Mrs, Arowolo replied, “Here, I have sold more of undies and perfumes. In fact, I can tell you of a truth that sales of men undies (singlets and boxers) are moving faster than that of ladies which is something very unusual. Normally, ladies patronise me more than men, but that is not the case today.

Another Trader, Aminat Awalu, who runs a perfume shop spoke with TNG, she opined that gift cards are also on high sales.
“I have had high sales of Valentine gift cards. Most of those who bought perfume from me also requested for gift cards, i think it completes the act of gift exchange since it is the purveyor of the actual love message”

However, when Awalu was responding on the specific question of what product is considered to be on ‘hot sale’ in the market, she said ‘undies’

‘Hmm! on the product that is considered as being on ‘hot sale’ I will say it is undies. And I think it is either because Nigerians are not creative with gift selection or the Valentine season has been trivialised to ‘undie’ may be sex thoughts. But for me, if I were to advise anyone, I will suggest that people try selecting pleasant perfumes for their lovers, nothing conveys love better than good smell” She explained.

The situation isn’t any different in Lagos. A tour of some shops by TNG showed that love was truly in the air. Traders were full of smiles and eager to attend to prospective customers who approached them for their desired items.

“Yes sales are quite impressive. People have been trooping here since January to pick their desired items. These includes flowers, male and female undies, romantic frames and greeting cards, engagement rings, etc. The surge in sales will likely go on till the end of February”, Mrs Janet said happily.

However, TNG gathered that the impressive patronage this valentine season is not limited to supermarkets and stores alone. Hoteliers and eateries are huge beneficiaries too.

The manager of one of the popular hotels on the Island confirmed that both loyal and new customers have been making reservations for Valentine as early as December 2019. He said the rooms and other facilities were fully booked as at first week of February. “Some people don’t joke with their Valentines day celebration as it affords them rare opportunities to rekindle their love for each other either as families, friends or couples. The hotels, eateries and other fun spots are in for some money this season irrespective of location,” he said.

    Contraceptives sales high:

Meanwhile, Mr. Ifeanyi Okorie, a Chemist said the sale of contraceptives was rather on the high side in the past few days; especially the emergency pills as compared to condoms.
