  • S##thole comment: I want immigrants from everywhere – President Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday says he wants immigrants from around the world.

“I want them to come in from everywhere,” he told reporters at the White House during an appearance with visiting President Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan.

Trump was responding to a reporter who asked if he wanted more immigrants from Norway.

Following a visit last week by Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg, the president allegedly told senators in a private meeting that the U.S. should accept more people from Norway instead of “shithole countries” in Latin America and Africa.

  • FG quizzes U.S ambassador over Trump’s ‘shithole’ remark

The Federal Government on Monday summoned the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Stuart Symington, over President Donald Trump’s alleged derogatory comment about Africa.

Trump was widely quoted in media report as referring to Africa nations as “shithole countries.”

However, the U.S President has denied making such comment.

Nigeria viewed the alleged statement as hurtful and offensive if truly it came from Trump. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, in a closed- door meeting with the U.S ambassador sought clarification on the remark.

, who was out of the country, was represented by the Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S Embassy in Abuja, Amb. David Young.

According to a statement signed by the ministry’s Spokesperson, Dr. Tope Ade Elias-Fatile, the U.S Deputy Chief of Mission said his country continue to hold Nigeria in very high regards.

Young also pointed out that there were several contradicting accounts by those present on Trump’s remark.

The statement reads: “The Honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffery Onyeama, today (Monday) summoned the U.S ambassador to Nigeria to clarify issues regarding the remarks credited to the U.S President, Donald Trump, in which he was widely quoted in media report as referring to Africa countries as ‘shithole countries’ and which he denied.

“The U.S ambassador, who was out of Nigeria, was represented by Amb. David Young, the Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of the United States of America in Abuja.

“The Minister sought clarification on the veracity or otherwise of the substance of the remarks, stressing that if they were true, they were deeply hurtful and offensive and unacceptable, especially given the very warm and cordial relations that presently exist between the Nigeria government and the government of the United States of America

  • AU ambassadors demand apology from Trump over ‘shit hole’ remarks on Africa

African Union ambassadors to the UN demanded an apology from U.S. President Donald Trump for his racist remark on the people of Africa.

The group of over 50 nations in a statement said: “the AU expressed its disappointment and outrage over the unfortunate comment made by Mr Donald Trump, President of the United States of America.

The remarks dishonour the celebrated American creed and respect for diversity and human dignity.

While expressing our shock, dismay and outrage, the African Union truly believes that there is a huge misunderstanding of the African continent and its people by the current administration.

There is a serious need for dialogue between the U.S. administration and the African countries. The African Union, through its member States, values the strategic partnership with the U.S.

This relationship should be from the point of equality and mutual respect based on accepted international principles of respect for basic human dignity of all,” the mission said.

The Mission demanded a retraction of the statement and an apology from the U.S. leader.

The AU mission condemns the statement in the strongest terms and demands a retraction of the comment as well as an apology to not only the Africans but to all people of African descent across the globe.”

The U.S. president reportedly made the comment during a meeting with congressional leaders in the Oval Office on Thursday.

Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump allegedly said after being presented with a proposal to restore protections for immigrants from the countries in question.

The UN has also branded as racist, the reported remark branding Haiti, El Salvador and unspecified African nations as “shithole countries”.

If confirmed these are shocking and shameful comments from the President of the United States. There is no other word you can use but ‘racist’.

You cannot dismiss entire countries and continents as ‘shitholes’, whose entire populations who are not white, are therefore not welcome,” said Rupert Coleville, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. (NAN)

  • Nigerians condemn Trump’s vulgarity against Africans

The Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation Americas (NIDOA) has expressed outrage at what it called “the vulgar, insensitive and racist language” about Africans and other immigrants allegedly made by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The group, in a statement by Mr Obed Monago, Chairman, NIDO Americas Board of Trustees and Mrs Patience Key, Chairman, NIDO USA Board of Directors, strongly condemned the statement allegedly made by the U.S. president.

The organisation stated that the preference of some immigrants because of the colour of their skin smacked of bigotry.

It also reminded the U.S. leader that in a country built with the laborious contributions of immigrants, aligning propriety and preference to Norway was clearly racist.

NIDOA said Nigerian immigrants were among the most educated, and contributed immensely to the greatness of the United States.

“Nigerians are proud to contribute to the betterment of the United States and will continue to do so.

“It is with enormous pain and outrage, that NIDOA condemns the deplorable, disgusting use of vulgarity to describe a broad set of people who, for the most part, have and continue to add value to the United States.

“We are not going to hold our breath for an apology, which would be proper for this insult on a well-meaning group of people.

“It is unfortunate that we have to voice our disdain and disgust, but we are left, for now, with no other option than this painful reaction.

“We wish the U.S. the very best in the days ahead. The United States needs to stay true to the founding of its democracy and the reason it should be a ‘light upon the hill’ for the world,” it said.

NIDOA stressed that such statement was beneath the dignity of the President of a country marked by the Statue of Liberty, honouring the Preamble to the Constitution and striving to attain a more perfect union.

“We painfully note the statement of Mr Trump that Nigerians will not go back to their ‘huts’ once they see the U.S. and ‘Haitians with AIDS;’ just to name a few,” the Nigerian organisation alleged.

It also noted what it said were Trump’s utterances over the years, including the ‘birtherism’ against former President Barack Obama and his disparaging announcement when he began his quest for the Presidency.

“We note the many immigrants who, as others, have bled and died for the U.S., an example being Emmanuel Mensah, who sacrificed himself for others just a few days ago in New York.

“This racist remark in no way, helps make America great. It does more to damage the cooperative and collaborative manner that other countries engage to help the U.S. in these trying times.

“In a democracy, as against a dictatorship, the checks on the system should rise to denounce, as the rest of the world has, the bigoted utterings from the Oval Office.

“The President should be the responsible leader of the free world, but the uninformed and bigoted statement of the President has caused the majority of the American people pain in more ways than one.”

NIDOA encouraged African countries, Haiti and others to be proud of their nationalities and stay true to their identities.

  • Trump’s ‘shithole’ remarks on Africa racist – UN

The Office of UN Commissioner for Human Rights said on Friday that U.S. President Donald Trump’s reported remarks that immigrants were coming from “shithole countries” are racist.

On Thursday, media reported that Trump behind closed doors expressed displeasure over people migrating to the U.S. from “shithole countries.”

“If confirmed, these are shocking and shameful comments from the president of the U.S.

“I am sorry but there is no other word one can use, but racist.

“You can’t dismiss entire countries and continents as shit holes whose entire population is not white and therefore are not welcomed,” the UN human rights spokesman Rupert Colville told newsmen.

Colville said the issue was more than “vulgar language”, Colville said.

“It’s about opening the door to humanity’s worst side, about validating and encouraging racism and xenophobia that will potentially disrupt and destroy lives of many people.”

  • Trump postpones “Fake News Awards” to Jan. 17

Trump postpones “Fake News Awards” to Jan. 17

U.S. President Donald Trump has postponed the announcement of his “Fake News Awards” of the Year 2017 to Wednesday, Jan. 17, citing high interest.

“The Fake News Awards, those going to the most corrupt & biased of the Mainstream Media, will be presented to the losers on Wednesday, January 17th, rather than this coming Monday,” the president wrote on Twitter.

“The interest in, and importance of, these awards is far greater than anyone could have anticipated,” Trump tweeted.

Trump has reportedly often labelled media coverage critical of his administration as “fake news,” accusing leading U.S. media of spreading “fake news” against him during the U.S. presidential election campaign as well as after he became president.

In early December, multiple major U.S. news outlets reported that the White House was planning to remove the current head of the State Department, as his relationship with Trump was “strained.”

Trump denied it as “FAKE NEWS!” on Twitter, and added that “He’s not leaving…we work well together.”

On Dec. 11, Trump dismissed a New York Times report that he watched four to even eight hours of television each day.

“Another false story, this time in the Failing @nytimes, that I watch four to eight hours of television a day – Wrong!” Trump Tweeted.

While responding to Trump, Clifford Levy, a deputy managing editor at New York Times, tweeted that the newspaper stood by its story, which was based on 60 interviews.

  • President Trump does not need to denigrate Nigerians -Hamilton Odunze

    Hamilton Odunze

President Donald J. Trump does not really need to pick on Nigerians. Last week, he said that “Nigerians come to the United States on visiting visas and refuse to go back to their caves in Nigeria”. But Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House spokeswoman, denied that the President actually made such comments.

There’s a Nigerian maxim that my father says to me when I ignore people who disparage me or my heritage, and it goes thus: If you respond to a knock on your door and say there is nobody home, you are a coward indeed. Trump knocked on our door as Nigerians, and we must respond civilly, but not as cowards.

Assuming that Sarah Sanders is right and that the President did not make such coldhearted comments about Nigerians, let him then consider this response as a preemptive reminder that Nigerians are some of the most peace-loving, hard-working, and law-abiding minority groups in the United States. However, considering that the President has in the past made very derogatory remarks about other minority groups in the United States, whether it is calling for a total ban of Muslims coming into the United States or saying that he has great relationship with the blacks, I would not put it past him to say similar things about Nigerians. Either way, someone needs to respond on behalf of more than one million Nigerians who call the United States their home.

I’m not sure that the President comprehends numbers very well, but on this occasion, the best way to respond or preempt him is to throw some numbers at him. Trump cannot truly understand these numbers while still making derogatory statements against Nigerians.

According to The Rockefeller Foundation Aspen Institute Diaspora Program (RAD), Nigerians are the best educated of 15 groups of immigrants in the United States. It’s also true that a greater number of first- and second- generation Nigerians earned undergraduate degrees by 37% compared to 27% percent of the general United States population. According to the same report, a household headed by Nigerians has a slightly higher median income than that of the general United States population. Nigerians are not just picking up the jobs that Americans refuse to do—rather, we are also competing very well in corporate America.

Just a few months ago, at Howard University, sixteen Nigerian students were awarded special honors by the university. Additionally, forty-three of the ninety-six graduating Doctor of Pharmacy candidates were Nigerian-Americans. Considering that Howard University is only a mere 1.9 miles from the White House, one would think that President Trump would be aware of these facts.

Back in April, Ifeoma White-Thorpe—a student with Nigerian parents—was accepted by all eight of the Ivy League colleges. And she is not alone. Chiamaka Obilor, another student raised by two Nigerian parents, was also accepted by all of the Ivy League colleges. There are a good number of Nigerian physicians in the United States who have graduated from Ivy League colleges. I know this because my own sister graduated from one of them as a plastic surgeon. The President himself, even with all of his money and influence, cannot boast of having a child who graduated from an Ivy League college. Talk about an embarrassment of wealth and influence. In Nigerian parlance, we always say that “money misses road,” when people who did not work hard have more money than they know what to do with it. President Trump can easily be classified as such.

The point I’m trying to make is that Nigerians are people who play by the rules and work hard, but above all, we place a strong emphasis on raising our children with strong family values and a great respect for law and order. The truth is that Nigerians are not easily knocked down by false claims and asinine comments. But when such comments are made by a man who both publicly mocked a disabled journalist and openly bragged about groping women and walking in on unsuspecting young girls while in a changing room at a beauty pageant and who were just looking to get ahead in life, it becomes deeply insulting to our values. And someone needs to speak up.

  • Trump to announce awards for ‘most dishonest, corrupt media’

U.S. President Donald Trump said he would announce awards for “most dishonest and corrupt” media outlets.

“I will be announcing THE MOST DISHONEST & CORRUPT MEDIA AWARDS OF THE YEAR on Monday at 5:00 o’clock [22:00 GMT].

“Subjects will cover Dishonesty & Bad Reporting in various categories from the Fake News Media. Stay tuned!” Trump wrote on his Twitter page on Wednesday.

Trump has many times accused leading U.S. media of spreading fake news targeting him during the election campaign as well as after he became the 45th president.

  • UN votes 128-9 to reject Trump’s declaration on Jerusalem

UN votes 128-9 to reject Trump’s declaration on Jerusalem

The UN General Assembly has decisively backed a resolution effectively calling on the US to withdraw its recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

“The text says that any decisions regarding the status of the city are “null and void” and must be cancelled.” BBC reports

The non-binding resolution was approved by 128 states, with 35 abstaining and nine others voting against.

It came after US President Donald Trump threatened to cut financial aid to those who backed the resolution.

Before the vote, the Palestinian foreign minister urged member states to reject “blackmail and intimidation”.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, meanwhile, said it would reject the anticipated result “outright” and dismissed the UN as a “house of lies”.

The nine who voted against the resolution were the US, Israel, Guatemala, Honduras, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Togo.

Among the 35 abstaining were Canada and Mexico

Those voting in favour included the other four permanent members of the UN Security Council (China, France, Russia and the UK) as well as key US allies in the Muslim world. There were 21 countries who did not turn up for the vote.

Recall that Trump yesterday had warned that he might cut financial aid to states who voted in favour of the resolution.

“They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars and then they vote against us,” he said. “Well, we’re watching those votes,” he added. “Let them vote against us. We’ll save a lot. We don’t care.”

  • Court orders Trump administration to give immigrant teens abortion access

A U.S. District Court judge ruled on Monday that President Donald Trump’s administration must allow access to abortion for two pregnant teenagers who are in the country illegally, escalating a high-profile legal fight.

Judge Tanya Chutkan put her order on hold, however, to give the U.S. Justice Department time to appeal her ruling.

The Justice Department filed its notice of appeal shortly afterward to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

The judge’s temporary restraining order marked the latest chapter in a legal dispute with the Trump administration over whether minors who are illegal immigrants have the right to seek an abortion during their detention.

The issue was ignited by a 17-year-old who petitioned the court in October to have an abortion, and ultimately had the procedure over the Trump administration’s objections.

In that instance, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled on Oct. 24 that the teen could have an abortion immediately, rejecting the administration’s opposition.

The two 17-year-olds in the latest legal action, known to the court as Jane Roe and Jane Poe, requested abortions, but the U.S. Office of Refugee Resettlement has refused to allow them access to the procedure.

In her ruling, Chutkan wrote that the girls’ “constitutional right to decide whether to carry their pregnancies to term” needed to be preserved.

She also noted they were likely to succeed on the legal merits of their case, based on the prior ruling in the higher court.

“We are deeply disappointed in the decision to grant a temporary restraining order that will compel HHS to facilitate abortions for minors when they are not medically necessary,” a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement.

”A pregnant minor who has entered the country illegally has the option to voluntarily depart to her home country or identify a suitable sponsor. HHS-funded facilities that provide temporary shelter and care for unaccompanied alien minors should not become way stations for these children to get taxpayer-facilitated abortions.”
