Tuchel reveals two players Chelsea is missing

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel admits they missed Andreas Christensen for last night’s Champions League win against Atletico Madrid.

Christensen was not included in Tuchel’s squad due to illness, but the London club managed without him.

“We missed Andreas Christensen today,” said the manager. “Thiago has also been out for many weeks. These are great personalities. I told Kurt Zouma this morning that he was playing and he stepped in. It is about unity, courage and trust with each other.

“It was generally a really good performance, an incredible effort, even from the players sitting in the stands. We could really feel we wanted this.

“They tried to push hard in the first half, but it gave space behind the midfield, and we took advantage of that.”

Tuchel tried to sign me for PSG – Kante

Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante admits manager Thomas Tuchel tried to sign him for PSG.

Tuchel was PSG coach before his sacking earlier this season and subsequent appointment at Chelsea.

Now the two have gotten a chance to work together, but Kante could have been playing for Tuchel in France if things had panned out differently.

“I knew in the past there was some contact with Paris Saint-Germain when he was the manager, but it was not something I wanted,” Kante said.

“It did not happen because I was happy at Chelsea and I stayed here.

“I haven’t spoken to the manager about it.”el in France if things had panned out differently.

I left PSG after Tuchel arrival – RB Leipzig winger

RB Leipzig winger Christopher Nkunku says he left PSG because of Thomas Tuchel.

Nkunku admits he didn’t see eye to eye with the now Chelsea manager.

He recalled to Canal+: “Why did I leave PSG? The arrival of (Thomas) Tuchel made me think.

“The fact of starting a season without really knowing what role you are going to have is quite complicated.

“There comes a time when you come to the end of your contract and you have one year left, either you extend or you leave, I made the choice to simply leave.”

  • Speaking German with Tuchel good for me – Werner

Speaking German with Tuchel good for me – Werner

Chelsea striker Timo Werner says he’s feeling good working for manager Thomas Tuchel.

The German international, 24, has endured a tricky season since his £47.5million move last summer – even going on a 14-game Premier League goal drought before his strike against Newcastle last week.

Werner has credited Tuchel for his recent boost in form saying the lack of language barrier has been crucial.

Werner told Sky Sports: “When you have a new manager it is, every time, a new beginning for everybody, so it was a new beginning for me as well.

“I said, ‘OK, I missed so many chances, I missed so many points and maybe I will start now.’

“I understood the old manager very well, it was not because of the language.

“But I think when you can talk German to someone, you can explain some things easier.

“Maybe he [Tuchel] would explain things easier than the old manager, for example, because it can be different when you talk to someone in your own language.

“Maybe misunderstanding a word can make a sentence completely different.”

  • Abramovich gives Tuchel green light to sign Haaland

Abramovich gives Tuchel green light to sign Haaland

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has told manager Thomas Tuchel they have the spending power to land Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland.

BILD says Chelsea are right in the hunt and owner Abramovich has given his permission for a move worth more than €100million.

New Blues boss Tuchel could infuriate his old side by trying to lure their star striker away after one-and-a-half seasons.

He risks the ire of sporting director Michel Zorc, manager Hans-Joachim Watzke and any Dortmund fans who still hold him in high regard.

But Haaland is both one for the future and the here and now. Chelsea are desperately in need of a dependable presence up front and the Norwegian seems to tick every box.

  • Solskjaer hails Chelsea boss ahead of Sunday clash

Solskjaer hails Chelsea boss ahead of Sunday clash

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has praised the early work of Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea.

The two teams meet on Sunday in the Premier League.

“Hopefully we can stop that run, that’s my job now,” said Solskjaer. “Thomas has come in and it’s changed a little bit at Chelsea. It’s going to be a great challenge for us.

“He’s done really well. It’s never easy coming into a season halfway through, he must be pleased as well.

“You can see the results, the stats, the possession they have had. They keep teams away from their own goal and keep possession.”

Comparisons were made between Chelsea hiring a young ex-player in Frank Lampard and Solskjaer’s appointment at United, but Roman Abramovich chose a different path when he brought in the more experienced Tuchel.

“I can’t really comment on Chelsea’s journey, that’s none of my business to be fair,” added Solskjaer.

“Every club will have to run their own journey. We’re on a good path we feel we have improved, but we’re nowhere near where we want to be and that’s higher up the table and winning trophies.

“The hunger in the group and the mentality in the group is good and that’s the main thing now that we keep on improving and hopefully we can get ready for Sunday now.

“We know we have scored a lot of goals and, of course, we need to be a better team defensively. Even though we conceded 11 in the first three games, those three games almost don’t count in my head because we were so far away from a Man United team with our preparation and no pre-season.

“But, even then, we have conceded too many goals so we need to improve on that and winning tighter games. We’ve had many games against City, Chelsea, Liverpool that have been 0-0 so get the goals in those games.”

  • Chelsea boss Tuchel warns Werner, Havertz

Chelsea boss Tuchel warns Werner, Havertz

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel admits German duo Timo Werner and Kai Havertz are playing for their futures at the club.

Both players have failed to set the world on fire since arriving from Bundesliga for big money last summer.

And Tuchel says the club must start to see a return on their significant investment.

He said: “They have a lot of potential, at the same time the club demands a lot of them and I can understand.

“We spent a lot of money, they spent a lot of money, it is time to step up and fight for it.”

Tuchel added he has faith that both players can succeed at Stamford Bridge.

“They fit into any plans of any manager because they have strong potential, strong talent and it is obvious,” Tuchel continued.

“I think, first of all, they did a brave decision to go abroad to jump out of their comfort zone.

“Timo was the top guy in Leipzig, Kai was the top, go-to guy in Leverkusen. To jump abroad to go to the most demanding league in Europe, to go to a club like Chelsea where people demand results, where people demand, expect even, titles if possible. It is a huge step out of your comfort zone.

“So, first of all, I talked to them. I like this decision because stepping out of your comfort zone creates energy and gives you energy and maybe makes you uncomfortable and this is maybe exactly what you need to reach the next level.

“You have maybe experienced weeks and days where you doubt it and you were not happy, but this is the process of change and when you want to grow as players and when you want to leave your footprints, this is a strong, strong decision. Let’s walk the talk.

“I will try to help you. I will try to push you I will try to guide you and be at your side and support when needed.

“Of course maybe it has been a bit easier because I am German and they are German – but in the end it’s like any player, they need confidence, they need trust, an honest approach. Sometimes they need the truth from you – even if they don’t like it.”

  • With Tuchel everything has improved – Azpilicueta

With Tuchel everything has improved – Azpilicueta

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta says things have improved rapidly under new manager Thomas Tuchel.

Azpilicueta, speaking with Mundo Deportivo, is adamant Tuchel’s appointment has helped the team get their season back on track.

He said, “Six weeks ago we weren’t at our best. Now with Tuchel everything has improved. The team has better feelings. Although the Premier has nothing to do with it, reaching the Champions League on a roll is good news.

“The solidity has recovered, fewer opportunities are granted and that speaks of the work of the group, from the first attacker to the last defender. With the new coach we try to control the games with and without the ball.

“He takes great care in improving the footballer’s movement and how to attack to punish the opponent. Now we are in that first phase of quickly absorbing all the information because there is hardly any rest, processing it and carrying it out. Winning helps to continue in the same direction.”

  • Arsene Wenger backs Tuchel hooking Hudson-Odoi

Arsene Wenger backs Tuchel hooking Hudson-Odoi

Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger supports Thomas Tuchel hooking Callum Hudson-Odoi during Chelsea’s 1-1 draw at Southampton.

The Chelsea boss replaced Hudson-Odoi with Hakim Ziyech in the 76th minute of Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Southampton, with the England under-21 star having only come on at half-time for Tammy Abraham.

Wenger had sympathy for Hudson-Odoi – but backed Tuchel in the decision, admitting he had done the same in his managerial career and that the youngster was “not in the game.”

He told BeIN Sport: “I’ve done it once in my life really because I was scared to lose the game because the guy was completely lost.

“Basically he [Hudson-Odoi] played in a Christmas tree, in that position behind the central striker which became Werner in the second half and he [Hudson-Odoi] never found the right position in there.

“I see him more in a wide position and he was not in the game. Was he the guy especially to take off? He didn’t do a lot of positives and not a lot of negatives as well.”

  • Why I’m not thinking about Tomori – Tuchel

Why I’m not thinking about Tomori – Tuchel

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel admits he’s not thought too much about Fikayo Tomori’s progress on-loan at AC Milan.

    Tomori is impressing in Italy.

But Tuchel said, “To be very honest, I have not spent too many minutes thinking about Tomori, not because I don’t like him or I don’t see his potential but because there was simply not time. Every minute I spend here at Cobham is a minute for the guys who are here.

“It’s tradition at Chelsea that many players are on loan and get minutes somewhere else when they cannot make it to regular minutes in here. This is good because it’s always the target for me to have players who can make it in different circumstances, who can show their qualities in different cultures and different clubs.

“It’s always a good sign so we will have this talk in the next weeks and months about all the guys who are on loan. Of course, I have a general impression of Tomori which means that he has high potential but I’m not into all the details right now.”
