Tuchel reacts as Abramovich puts Chelsea up for sale

Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel has said Roman Abramovich putting the club up for sale is the “right decision”.

On Wednesday, Abramovich confirmed he is accepting bids to sell the Premier League club.

This comes amid calls for the 55-year-old oligarch to be sanctioned following President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Russian billionaire who bought Chelsea in 2003, admitted he has made the “painful” decision to offload the club.

Abramovich released the statement before the Blues beat Luton 3-2 in the FA Cup.

When asked for his reaction, Tuchel told BBC Sport: “Maybe I heard it a little bit earlier than you but still it was very close to the kick-off!

“Well, you know, we heard the rumours throughout the day and it’s on TV, and when we have team meetings and we eat together the guys talk about it – everybody talks about it.

“So, yeah, it is big news, let’s wait and see for the best and see what the day brings.”

Tuchel was asked if he feels it is the right decision, he replied: “I think every decision he takes is the right decision.

“It’s his choice, it’s his club, and it’s not on me to comment.”

No worries and no regrets after Liverpool loss – Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel says he has ‘no worries and no regrets’ after Chelsea’s loss to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.

The German made the decision to swap goalkeeper Edouard Mendy for Kepa Arrizabalaga as the game went to penalties.

Kepa ended up missing a penalty as Liverpool took out the shootout 11-10.

“Football can be a brilliant game and it was a brilliant game, no worries and no regrets,” Tuchel said.

“We gave everything and it was a brilliant match of football. The disallowed goal for Romelu is a very close call – there are bad feelings about this call.

“You need a bit of luck, we scored three times, had big chances, they had big chances, It was a fair result all the way to have a draw.

“We did it before with Kepa, he is slightly better in penalty saving and that is why I made the decision. It is unusual all 11 players need to shoot, he took it a bit too quick. Sometimes these things can turn against you but you make them when they need to be made, not after when people can judge you.

“In the middle of the storm it is pretty calm. We can allow ourselves to focus on what we love the most, playing football. We know there are bigger things than football going on.”

On whether anything will change at the club with yesterday’s ownership statement: “Very confident on a daily basis and how we handle things will not change.”

Tuchel needs to be calm, he shouts a lot – Hudson-Odoi

Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi says his relationship with manager Thomas Tuchel is now rock solid.

Within two months of the German’s arrival, their relationship was in the spotlight when Tuchel brought him on at Southampton at half-time before hauling him off 31 minutes later.

“That situation was very strange to me,” says Hudson-Odoi. “I’ve never been in a situation like that, so when it happened in my head I was just like, there was no need for me to sulk or go into a strop or give attitude because that’s not the person I am. Everything was be calm, be happy, be relaxed.”

It is an open secret that Tuchel wants more from Hudson-Odoi. You only have to watch his histrionics from the bench to know that. It is also increasingly apparent that Tuchel is slowly being won round by the 21-year-old.

“The manager is a very good guy, tactically he’s amazing,” said Hudson-Odoi to the Daily Mail. “He knows how to get the best out of each player, sometimes it might be in a way that you don’t want to hear it or he might be shouting in a way that you think: ‘Why are you shouting so much on the touchline?’

“Sometimes it’s hard to understand and you think to yourself: ‘Can you calm down a little bit and stop shouting as much?!’

“But he’s trying to get a message across and make it clear to you that: ‘Listen, I want this from you because I want to win the game. I’m not just going to shout at you, I’ll shout at everybody to make sure we get the best out of everybody. And we win the game. Or get the 100 per cent out of everybody’.

Hudson-Odoi admitted the German manager knows how to get the best out of each player

“It’s definitely a different sort of manager compared to the others ones I’ve been under. He’s always on his toes, always up and ready to make a gesture or talk. Just very vocal.

“It’s good on the pitch but sometimes it’s like: ‘Can you quieten down a little bit, not shout as much?’ But it’s OK.”

It’s not the time to laugh at him – Tuchel defends Lukaku

Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel has jumped to the defence of Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku who touched the ball just seven times against Crystal Palace, insisting “it’s not the time to laugh about him”.

Lukaku was handed his 12th Premier League start of the season at Selhurst Park on Saturday, but failed to make an impact as the Blues laboured to an unconvincing 1-0 victory.

The Belgium international, who returned to Stamford Bridge from Inter in a £98 million ($133m) deal last summer, was unable to muster a single shot at goal and only had seven touches – fewer than any other player to see 90 minutes of action this season.

Chelsea are now looking ahead to the first leg of their round of 16 Champions League tie against Lille, and Lukaku is in contention to lead the line once again.

Tuchel jumped to the forward’s defence at his pre-match press conference, telling reporters: “It’s not the time to laugh about him, he is our player and we will protect him.”

The Blues head coach is aware of the damning statistics Lukaku posted against Palace, but has played down their significance and written his performance off as a bad day at the office.

“What can I do? I don’t know. Well, we have to deal with it,” Tuchel added. “The data is out there and speaks the language that he wasn’t in our game.

“With strikers, it can be like this when they lack confidence or depending on the game.”

Tuchel places Real Madrid defender top of Chelsea shopping list

Premier League side Chelsea are interested in Real Madrid defender Eder Militao.

AS says Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel wants to see the Brazil international signed this summer.

Tuchel needs to reinforce his defensive options this year with Andreas Christensen, Cesar Azpilicueta and Toni Rudiger all off contract in June.

And it’s suggested Militao is now top of his summer shopping list.

The stopper has a deal at Real Madrid to 2025.

Chelsea attacking players upset with treatment by Tuchel

Claims have emerged of Chelsea’s attacking players being upset with the management of Thomas Tuchel st Stamford Bridge

The Athletic reports Romelu Lukaku is far from the only forward who is unhappy with life under the current head coach.

It is claimed that Tuchel’s attitude towards his forwards, including constant berating on the touchline and harsh words for mistakes, has made for a low mood.

An inability to hide his frustrations has been picked up on by many of them, and has upset some to the extent that they are considering seeking an exit from Chelsea in the near future.

A source says it has had a detrimental impact on confidence, with players less likely to take on risky opportunities or use their instincts for fear of Tuchel lashing out at them.

The report also points to the constant chopping and changing in selection up front as a reason for the disillusionment among forwards, with the feeling being that a lack of a consistent frontline is making it difficult for them to build any form of connection and chemistry on the pitch.

I’m in contact with Dembele – Chelsea boss, Tuchel

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel admits he’s been in contact with Barcelona attacker Ousmane Dembele amid his contract blow-up.

Tuchel revealed when he exchanged text messages with Dembele and admits he is a very good player. Off contract in June, the attacker is being linked with Chelsea, Manchester United and Newcastle.

Tuchel and Dembele worked together for one year at Borussia Dortmund and the 24-year-old has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, but Tuchel would not be drawn on this ahead of side’s Premier League match against Tottenham on Sunday.

But he did say: “He is a very good player and he’s in his top level. I’m very fortunate to have trained him in my time at Dortmund. It was only one year, it should have been longer, but I needed to leave and he decided to leave.

“From there, we are not in the closest contact. We met here and there because of his duties for the French national team and, of course, I was in Paris so this was when they were preparing for national duties.

“It’s very close to Paris so this is where we met and exchanged some messages. But he is in a situation. I have absolutely no idea why he is in that situation and I have no idea what the situation and detail is. I know how I feel about it when it is about my players so it’s better not to talk.”

  • EPL: We need attitude change for Tottenham – Tuchel

EPL: We need attitude change for Tottenham – Tuchel

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel admits he and his players must adopt a “different attitude and mindset” after falling 12 points behind leaders Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

The Blues followed defeat by City with a frustrating 1-1 draw at Brighton on Tuesday night.

Tuchel gave his players time off this week before facing Tottenham on Sunday.

“We decided we would give the players two days off after Brighton to de-connect a little bit,” Tuchel said.

“But the two days alone doesn’t solve everything. It was good to have, and after this Tottenham game we will have another chance to give the majority of the players another two days off, because we simply need it.

“But for this Sunday, two days alone are not the solution. We have to make sure we are in a different attitude and a different mindset, and in top shape, because we have a big match.”

Chelsea have fallen off the blistering pace set by City, with the Blues having drawn five games and lost twice since the start of the December.

Romelu Lukaku and Hakim Ziyech were spotted having a lengthy animated conversation during the draw at Brighton, but Tuchel believes his players will be refreshed in time for their London derby with Spurs.

“I could see, I could feel from myself and from the team, that some emotions took over, maybe frustration, maybe disappointment,” admitted the German, reflecting on his side’s draw with the Seagulls.

“It was hard for us on this particular day to reach our top level as a team, whatever top level means on this particular day.

“We did not expect in general that we would play an overwhelming, exciting match, because there’s a very strong opponent who has a certain style of play that makes you underperform sometimes.

“But that was the very first time, so when it happens for the first time we should not make a bigger deal of it than it is.

“We’ve had our two days off now and two days to prepare to be ready for Sunday.”

  • Mount gave me his ‘burning eyes’ after Man City axe

Mount gave me his ‘burning eyes’ after Man City axe

Thomas Tuchel has revealed Mason Mount was unhappy about being dropped for Saturday’s clash with Manchester City.

Mount was introduced from the substitutes bench with 10 minutes remaining as Chelsea went down 1-0 at the Etihad.

Former Blues boss Frank Lampard previously acknowledged Mount’s ‘burning eyes’ when he wasn’t selected, and Tuchel has now been on the receiving end.

“Yeah, I get them and this is absolutely normal,” Tuchel told his pre-match press conference before Tuesday’s meeting with Brighton.

“But it’s still within Mason’s character of kindness and being polite and being respectful, so there is no harm in this.

“I get the eyes, I get the look. I know the look, of course. He is here to play these kinds of matches, but we were simply opting for runners. We thought we could break the line more often with Hakim (Ziyech) as a left foot on the left side and going for Christian (Pulisic) as a right side because of the arrival of Christian in the box.

“Normally, he is a bit more offensive, a bit more of a runner than Mason and we expected the spaces more behind the last line and not in front of the back four from City. So that was the decision.

“I felt Mason not in the 100% zone where he is like untouchable, which he normally almost is. So we took that decision and it can happen from time to time. He’s not happy about it, but it will not last long because everyone loves Mason – me included.”

Tuchel also noted that the absence of Reece James, who is currently injured, has impacted Mount’s efficiency.

“Reece, N’Golo and him were so strong together,” Tuchel added. “This is what we’ve been talking about [relationships on the pitch]: when you turn, you know without even looking he will come now or I will go and get the pass and he will come in, so I will be here.

“We are missing this. And I think, without asking him now, Mason is missing this. He has this genuine understanding with Reece and with Chilly (Ben Chilwell) on the other side.”

  • Chelsea coach Tuchel blasts Lukaku after City defeat

Chelsea coach Tuchel blasts Lukaku after City defeat

Thomas Tuchel has lashed out at Romelu Lukaku’s performance for Chelsea against Manchester City in Saturday’s Premier League defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

Kevin De Bruyne’s second-half strike was enough to seal a 1-0 victory for Pep Guardiola’s hosts, who finished the match with a 13-point lead over the Blues – their nearest rivals – at the summit.

Unlike his countryman, Lukaku was frequently unable to effect as much control in a frequently muted showing from the visitors – and speaking after the final whistle, Tuchel acknowledged that he had been left unhappy with his efforts.

“We had eight or nine offensive transitions, but had zero touches in the box,” the German stated in his post-match comments. “That was a big problem today, the performance of our front players. A lack of position, timing and composure. We lost too many balls too easily.

“Romelu Lukaku sometimes needs to [deliver] the service. He is included in this, he had many ball losses in very promising circumstances. He had a huge chance.

“Of course we want to serve him, but he is part of the team, and the performance up front, we can do much better.”
