Shearer replies Tuchel: It was teams who voted against 5 subs

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has hit out at Premier League managers demanding a five substitution change.

Shearer has argued that more substitutions favours bigger clubs with more talented squads.

The Premier League’s all-time top scorer believes managers with better talent available in reserve have an advantage later on in games.

“This is what our country is, he knew that before coming in,” Shearer said, referring to Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel.

“The teams vote that in and they didn’t want that.

“I think it can be an unfair advantage for the [bigger] clubs.”

Tuchel criticises EPL fixtures after Villa win

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has called the Premier League schedule “not fair” and said his side “are struggling” after sustaining more injuries.

The Blues won 3-1 at Aston Villa on Sunday, with Romelu Lukaku scoring a goal and winning a penalty in his first match back after a Covid-19 absence.

Chelsea had a request to have their 0-0 draw versus Wolves on 19 December rejected by the Premier League.

“It’s like it is – but this cannot be the right way,” said Tuchel.

While 15 top-flight matches have been postponed so far in December, Chelsea were playing their eighth game in all competitions in the month and have Brighton to come at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Callum Hudson-Odoi and Lukaku have both missed games because of Covid-19, while forwards Kai Havertz and Timo Werner were still absent and defender Thiago Silva and midfielder N’Golo Kante picked up injuries in the win at Villa Park.

“It’s not fair,” added Tuchel. “We’ve all been in bed for 10 days and we play against teams who prepare with games postponed, and who prepare with one week for these matches.

“They make us play all the time, even if we have Covid. We have new injuries and it won’t stop. People at the green table, in offices, make these decisions.

“We are struggling, we’re pressing our players. I have maximum respect for what the players did. We do changes because of injuries. We don’t change for tactical reasons any more.”

“I’m very impressed with my players but super concerned,” added Tuchel. “Maybe we made a big mistake letting players play after corona and one or two training sessions.

“But obviously they [the Premier League] made us play and so we play.”

He reiterated his call for five substitutes to be allowed in the Premier League again to help deal with the pandemic, but he said there was “zero chance” of that happening.

“We are not protecting the players because we are the only league who doesn’t have five changes,” Tuchel said.

The rule has remained in the rest of Europe’s top leagues since it was introduced in summer 2020.

Kante convinced me he could be on the bench – Tuchel

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel says he’s managing N’Golo Kante through their Christmas schedule.

The Frenchman played a key role in the Carabao Cup victory against Brentford midweek.

“N’Golo convinced me that he could be on the bench [against Brentford] which was very nice from him but also from the whole squad, because everyone was pushing to be on the bench or to be involved in the squad,” explained Tuchel.

“Nobody gave me the feeling that they would like a pause from this challenging run of games and that is the character I like to see. N’Golo convinced me that he would prefer to be on the bench and to play some minutes rather than having a full rest.

“We decided to go with N’Golo’s wishes after discussing it with him but also from checking all his data from the last week and we had the green light to give him 20–25 minutes of action.

“I have praised him so many times and of course he makes a difference. There are simply no other words left to describe him. He is an outstanding talent who would help every single team in the world.”

Tuchel targets PSG defender as Rudiger closer to Chelsea exit

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is targeting PSG defender Presnel Kimpembe to replace contract rebel Antonio Rudiger.

Rudiger’s future has been the subject of speculation in recent months, with the German international’s contract at Chelsea set to expire at the end of the season.

Therefore, with Rudiger potentially leaving in a matter of months, Chelsea could be starting to plan ahead, and it seems that Tuchel is already targeting someone he is familiar with to add to his squad.

The 48-year-old coach is eyeing a reunion with Kimpembe, who he worked with at PSG, as reported by L’Equipe.

The pair spent two years together in France, winning Ligue 1 twice and making the Champions League final in 2020.

Willian names favourite Chelsea player under Tuchel

Former Chelsea winger, Willian, has named defender, Reece James, as his favourite Blues player under manager, Thomas Tuchel.

Willian, who currently plays for Corinthians, also tipped James for a bright future, adding that he likes the full-back.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, the former Arsenal star lauded Chelsea academy graduates Callum-Hudson Odoi and Mason Mount but picked out James as his favourite player.

When asked about the players currently at Chelsea he likes to watch, Willian said: “[Callum] Hudson-Odoi, Mason Mount, Reece James.”

When pressed to name a favourite, Willian replied: “Difficult. I think Reece James – I like him.

He added, “He’s a good player. I think he can be one of the best right-backs in the world in years.”

James has established himself as a key player in Tuchel’s squad this season.

Deployed mainly as a wing-back, the 22-year-old has scored an impressive four goals and registered five assists so far this season.

  • COVID-19: Tuchel blasts Premier League for putting Chelsea at ‘huge risk’ after goalless against Wolves

COVID-19: Tuchel blasts Premier League for putting Chelsea at ‘huge risk’ after goalless against Wolves

Thomas Tuchel has criticised the Premier League for putting his coronavirus-hit Chelsea side at “huge risk” by forcing them to play at Wolves on Sunday as leaders Manchester City put Newcastle to the sword.

Chelsea drew 0-0 at Molineux while City eased to a 4-0 away win before Tottenham held 10-man Liverpool to a 2-2 draw, denting the Reds’ title hopes.

But the action on the pitch was overshadowed by Britain’s worsening Covid-19 crisis, with just four games played in total out of 10 originally scheduled.

Premier League clubs will meet on Monday to discuss what action to take over the chaos, with growing questions over the integrity of the competition as the busy festive period looms.

The Athletic reported that clubs would discuss whether to postpone an entire round of fixtures on December 28, 29, and 30 in an attempt to ease the pressure.

Chelsea, who had their request for a postponement rejected, could only field 14 outfield players in their matchday squad on Sunday, with N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, and Trevoh Chalobah all featuring despite struggling for match fitness.

“We were put in a huge risk of health and safety to the players, not just because of Covid but also physically,” said an angry Tuchel, whose side mustered just one shot on target.

Tuchel, whose stuttering team are now six points behind leaders City, said he did not know what would happen with Chelsea’s fixtures against Brentford in the League Cup and Aston Villa in the coming week.

“I’ve got no idea what happens now,” he said. “We had an idea (on Saturday evening) what’s going to happen, but then that didn’t happen.”

  • How Tuchel has improved my game – Mason Mount

How Tuchel has improved my game – Mason Mount

Chelsea ace Mason Mount admits manager Thomas Tuchel has taken his game to a new level.

Mount admitted Tuchel has already had a big influence on his own playing style – both with and without the ball.

“He’s been massive for me, to come in halfway through a season and do what he did last year, to win the Champions League and develop us all as players and as a group, he’s been brilliant since the first day he’s come in,” said Mount.

“For me personally he’s helped me on and off the ball, he’s helped me with confidence.

“And the way I like to play is very similar to his way he sets up and how he wants us to play.

“So I’m loving it, I’m loving every moment and hopefully we can keep winning things.”

  • Jorginho has sacrificed himself for Chelsea – Tuchel

Jorginho has sacrificed himself for Chelsea – Tuchel

Manager Thomas Tuchel said Jorginho has “sacrificed himself” for Chelsea after the midfielder scored two penalties, including a dramatic stoppage-time winner, against Leeds United.

The Italy international’s second penalty after 94 minutes at Stamford Bridge ensured Tuchel’s side remain two points behind leaders Manchester City.

Jorginho played the entire match despite suffering with a back injury.

And Tuchel admitted he was aware the “moment would come when he suffers”.

The midfielder was named Uefa men’s Player of the Year following a 2020-21 season in which he won the European Championship with Italy and the Champions League with his club.

Jorginho’s 56-game 2020-21 campaign ended with Italy’s triumph over England on 11 July and he was back in action for Chelsea in the European Super Cup on 11 August.

The 29-year-old could end this calendar year having played 66 times in total, should he feature in Chelsea’s remaining five matches.

“Jorginho has sacrificed himself for many weeks actually,” said Tuchel. “He played Champions League with us, Euros with Italy, then all the World Cup qualifiers for Italy.

“There was not only physical effort for him, but also it has been mentally very, very demanding.”

The Chelsea boss added: “He had no pre-season then started the Super Cup game, so I knew we would arrive at a point in the season where he would feel his body and not be fully fit.

“But Jorginho is Jorginho and he is fully aware of the situation himself. He sacrifices himself and gives his very best every single day.

“It’s the perfect attitude and it’s a big reward for him today, because it’s not easy to score two penalties in one game.”

Teenage substitute Joe Gelhardt appeared to have earned a late point for Leeds following Jorginho’s first penalty, after Mason Mount had cancelled out Raphinha’s first-half spot-kick.

But Jorginho’s second goal keeps Chelsea, in third, in touch with champions City, who beat Wolves 1-0 earlier on Saturday, and second-placed Liverpool, who beat Aston Villa by the same scoreline.

  • Tuchel warned he isn’t beyond Chelsea sack

Tuchel warned he isn’t beyond Chelsea sack

Former England winger Trevor Sinclair believes Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel isn’t beyond the sack.

Chelsea are currently struggling to shake a current form slump.

“He does not get the best out of Lukaku right now, but in general he has organised the team Frank Lampard built. He has made them hard to beat and they have had a time where they have been incredible,” Sinclair told Talksport.

“But they are just people, there is always a little dip. He (Tuchel) wants to see improvement in the simple things and mentality of the players, and I’m sure they will get over it.

“Anyway, you know what Chelsea is like. Their football model is that if the coach does not succeed, kick him and start again.

“I think he will get a little more time, but if it continues to go hard in the Premier League, I think the questions will come and that it will not take long before Chelsea act.”

  • Thomas Tuchel blocks Ziyech, Werner move to Barca

Thomas Tuchel blocks Ziyech, Werner move to Barca

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is set to block Spanish giants Barcelona from signing attackers Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech in the January transfer window.

The two out of favour superstars are being linked with loan moves to the Catalan club, who are struggling financially.

Spanish reports had claimed that Barca will turn to Werner and Ziyech in the winter, as they are being priced out of a move for Manchester City’s Ferran Torres.

However, Sport suggests that Chelsea boss Tuchel was blocking any loan moves for Werner or Ziyech.

He wants to maintain a deep squad for the various competitions they are competing in for the rest of the season.
