Grand Slam: Australia open set attendance record

A new grand slam record has been set at the just concluded Australia Open with more than 900,000 spectators visiting over three weeks, organizers said on Tuesday.

According to the organizer, the record was set in spite of the absence of some big-name players and the schedule disruptions due to rain.

A record 839,192 fans flocked to Melbourne Park from Jan. 16 to Sunday for the first tournament in two years free of COVID-19 restrictions, beating the previous mark of 812,174 set in January 2020.

The figures eclipse last year’s attendance numbers at other Grand Slam main draws —- 515,164 visited Wimbledon, 613,500 were at the French Open and 776,120 went to the U.S. Open.

Over 60,000 also watched the qualifying events in Melbourne, bringing the total up to 902,312.

The tournament, missing the retired Serena Williams, Roger Federer and last year’s homegrown champion Ash Barty, broke its single-day attendance mark with 94,854 fans visiting on Jan. 21.

The previous record was 93,709 set in 2020.

“It was reported that we didn’t have the greats any more, that it was going to be terrible. But people just want to be entertained,” Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley said.

“They want to have some fun, and tennis is a great option for them, and it’s become a summer thing to do for Melburnians and for Australians and also for our guests from around the world.”

Tiley has set his sights on breaching the one million mark next year.

“This year was the start of it,” Tiley said. “It’s going to be a three-week extravaganza.”

Novak Djokovic beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the men’s singles on Sunday to win his 10th Australian Open crown, drawing level with Rafa Nadal on 22 majors.

It helped him in reclaiming the world number one ranking.

IPOB declares total lockdown in all Southeast states on Tuesday

The Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB) has declared a sit-at-home in all Southeast states in the country next week Tuesday.

IPOB has noted that the Tuesday’s sit-at-home order is a  day of civil action across the Southeast.

The order is coming ahead of the Appeal court hearing of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu and the planned visit to Imo state by President Buhari.

According to the spokesman of IPOB, Emma Powerful the sit-at-home will be a complete lockdown of the Southeast.

IPOB explained that it was implementing the existing sit-at-home order regarding Kanu’s court appearance.

Powerful”s statement reads in part: “The global family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the command and leadership of our indefatigable liberator Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu Kanu, wish to announce to the general public, especially Biafrans that Tuesday 13th of September has been declared a day of civil action in the form of sit-at-home in Biafra Land.

“The Tuesday 13th September, 2022 civil action is very important for two reasons:

“First, our leader’s Appeal court hearing that was supposed to be on October 11th has been brought forward to 13th September, 2022. As usual we call on Biafrans and lovers of freedom to demonstrate our solidarity with our leader who has been bearing our yoke in detention for over a year now.

“There shall be a TOTAL LOCKDOWN of the whole of Biafraland on Tuesday the 13th of September 2022. The Imposter Buhari cannot be coming to Imo State while he continues to detain our leader Mazi Nnamdi in the DSS custody.”

The separatist group urged people of the Southeast to go about their Monday’s activities and prepare for Tuesday’s lockdown completely.”

The IPOB leader also reiterated its call for the unconditional release of its leader.

The Indigenous People of Biafra is a nationalist separatist group in Nigeria that aims to restore the Republic of Biafra, a country which seceded from Nigeria prior to the Nigerian Civil War and later rejoined Nigeria after its defeat by the Nigerian military.

  • Nigeria’s policies is to enhance performance of the oil and gas sector- President Buhari

Nigeria’s policies is to enhance performance of the oil and gas sector- President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, said Nigeria is embarking on different initiatives, projects, and policies to enhance the performance of the oil and gas sector.

Addressing the 6th Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) Summit in Doha, Qatar, President Buhari, asserted that enactment of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) was designed to enable Nigeria to derive more value from natural gas.

Buhari was represented by Chief Timipre Sylva, Minister of State, Petroleum Resources, according to a statement by Horatius Egua, Senior Adviser to the Minister on Media and Communications.

The President noted that the recent enactment of the PIA was an indication of the government’s commitment to derive more value from natural gas by providing the required governance, regulatory and fiscal framework to support the industry’s growth.

He described Nigeria as a gas province with some oil was committed to sustainable growth of natural gas exploitation and utilisation, both for domestic use and export via LNG and pipeline gas to sub-regional African countries.

According to him, some of the gas initiatives Nigeria is currently embarking upon include the National Gas Expansion Program (NGEP).

“NGEP is designed to provide framework and policy support to extend gas supply and utilization in power generation, gas-based industries, and in emerging niche gas sectors.

“Such is gas in transportation, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for cooking and remote virtual gas supply using trucks to convey LNG and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to industries,” he said.

The other initiatives according to the president are the Ajaokuta-Abuja-Kano gas pipeline to support five billion cubic feet per day of domestic gas utilization in the near term and five-Gigawatt power generation.

“The expanding of the current LNG production capacity to about 30 million tons per annum at Bonny with the ongoing N-LNG Train seven project and the declaration of 2021-2030 as the Decade of Gas towards a gas-powered economy.

“This would not only lower Nigeria’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions but also reduce the country’s import bills.”

The President noted that with natural gas projected to be the leading fossil fuel in the energy transition, the GECF, given its member countries’ vast experience, was well-positioned to provide a credible platform to promote natural gas as a sustainable fuel for an effective energy transition.

“We, therefore, need to continue to assess the gas and energy market dynamics both in the short, medium, and long-term time frame with the aim of taking market opportunities and collectively address the challenges,” he noted.

To achieve the set objectives, he stressed the need to work together as policymakers, investors, decision-makers, researchers, and technology developers to make modern energy sources such as natural gas available and affordable to all.

While restating Nigeria’s commitment to the Conference of Parties (COP26) Glasgow declaration towards zero carbon emissions, Buhari however underscored the importance of natural gas for an effective energy transition towards a low carbon future.

He equally emphasized the need for natural gas as a fuel for socio-economic development, taking into consideration its credentials such as abundant, flexible, cleanest fossil fuel, and its versatility.

The holiday would be in commemoration of the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him).

  • IPMAN threatens to shut down filling stations, cut fuel supply nationwide from Tuesday

IPMAN threatens to shut down filling stations, cut fuel supply nationwide from Tuesday

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has stated plans are underway by its members to shut down all filling stations across the country.

IPMAN warned it might also cut down supplies from Tuesday should the Federal Government and Inspector General of Police fail to address alleged illegalities perpetrated by the Police Force.

National Public Relation Officer, (PRO) of IPMAN, Yakubu Suleiman, said these on Sunday in a chat with reporters in Jos.

Some police officers last Friday were alleged to have invaded IPMAN National Secretariat for some unstated reasons.

Suleiman described the invasion as an illegal clampdown over alleged sponsorship by some impostors parading themselves as executives of IPMAN.

He said aggrieved members and officials at State, zonal and depot levels have met and resolved to shut down filling stations over the incident.

“Whereas there is subsisting Supreme Court judgement of December 2018, that have since disposed off a suit No. SC15/2015, and ordered that Mr Chinedu Okoronkwo, is our President and Alhaji Danladi Garba Pasali, as National secretary.

“The continued violation of this judgement, even by the police is causing more harm to the downstream sector of the petroleum industry, which if such is not halted will lead to impunity and anarchy,” he said.

He frowned at the police siege on their Secretariat, adding similar incident led to the closure of Suleja depot last week.

He claimed the Suleja incident would have truncated supplies to Abuja and Northern States if not for the National Secretariat intervention.

“It is true that members of IPMAN in many States across sections of Nigeria, have met and others are meeting and communicating to us that they will shut down, from Tuesday.

“The implications would be there will be a shortage or fuel scarcity in the country,” he said.

The IPMAN PRO called on the Chief Justice of the Federation, the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, NNPC, the National Assembly and Inspector General of Police to act in protection of laid down rules of law.

“We are calling on all arms of government including the security agencies to take the necessary action, towards halting impunity in the downstream sector of the petroleum industry,” he said.

  • Nigerian Army kicks off ‘Exercise Crocodile Smile’ nationwide Tuesday

Nigerian Army kicks off ‘Exercise Crocodile Smile’ nationwide Tuesday

As the campaign against police brutality in the forms of #EndSARS protests continue to spread across the country, the Nigerian Army on Saturday said it will begin its annual operation tagged ‘Exercise Crocodile Smile’ nationwide on Tuesday.

The sudden announcement by the Army of the exercise which usually involves large deployment of troops and weapons, will surely be interpreted as a move to use soldiers to stop the #EndSARS protests which is gaining support across many town and cities of the country.

But in an obvious anticipation of such insinuations, the Army, in a statement by its Acting Director of Public Relations, Sagir Musa, emphasized that Exercise CROCODILE SMILE is traditionally conducted in the last quarter of the year.

He added that this year’s Exercise is scheduled to commence from the 20th of October to the 31st of December 2020.

But the assertion in the statement that the 2020 Exercise is deliberately intended to be all encompassing to include cyber warfare exercises designed to identify, track and counter negative propaganda in the social media and across the cyberspace will also likely raise a red flag.

This is because #EndSARS protesters rely on the social media for coordination of their activities and spread of information to those who want to join the protests.

“This is the first ever Cyberwarfare exercise to be conducted in the history of the African Armed Forces.

“Accordingly, the exercise will also include positive identification component aimed at identifying Boko Haram terrorists fleeing from the North East and other parts of the country as a result of the ongoing operations in the various theatres of operations especially in the Northeast, North Central and North Western parts of Nigeria.

“The Nigerian Army, once again, reassures all well meaning Nigerians of its commitment to the sustenance of peace and security in Nigeria and urges members of the public for their support and understanding throughout the period of the exercise,” Musa said in the statement.

  • COVID-19: Lawmakers should undergo compulsory test before plenary resumes Tuesday

COVID-19: Lawmakers should undergo compulsory test before plenary resumes Tuesday

As the House of Representatives reconvene tomorrow, there’s a clarion call by some lawmakers that members should undergo a compulsory test to know their COVID-19 status.

The lawmakers who spoke under the condition of anonymity told TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) that it would be out of place to hold sessions when most lawmakers do not know their Covid-19 status.

Recall that the House of Representatives in a statement issued and signed by the Clerk, Patrick Giwa late Sunday night had asked members to resume tomorrow.

But some Lawmakers are not finding it funny as all the calls by Nigerians insisting that they should undergo a Covid-19 test was rebuffed.

One of the Reps who is from the South East geo-political zone of Nigeria simply told TNG that”I don’t want to be a dead hero I won’t near the National Assembly.

“What am I going there to discuss when the questions to be raised already have answers so you expect me to go and debate an already answered question, I won’t do that I will rather stay at home.

Another Rep from the South West geo-political zone said” I am not going until we undergo a compulsory test on Covid-19 and once the results are out I can now summon courage to appear in that chamber.

“If they announce now that we should come over to run tests I will be the first Lawmaker to show my face there.

“Instead of this Government looking seriously into the mysterious deaths in Kano and find a lasting solution to it they want us to meet.

“If I may ask, are we going to isolate Kano lawmakers at the emergency plenary or we will all be in the same chamber, forget it I won’t go.

In the statement issued by the Clerk of the House, members were advised to strictly adhere to the guidelines of NCDC such as social distancing and the wearing of face masks.
