    Christian Atsu to be buried in Ghana

    The remains of former Chelsea and Newcastle winger Christian Atsu, has been flown home to Ghana for funeral rites.

    Atsu’s body was found under the rubble days after the devastating Turkey-Syria earthquake happened.

    The Ghanaian forward was caught up in a 7.8-magnitude quake that rocked Syria and Turkey on February 6, killing over 44,000 people in both countries.

    The country’s foreign ministry on Sunday said that his remains will be accompanied by his family and Ghana’s ambassador to Turkey on a Turkish airlines flight and will arrive in Accra, Ghana’s capital, on Sunday at 7:40 pm.

    The ministry, on Saturday, said that Atsu’s twin sister and older brother were present when his body was recovered at the site.

    ”His widow Marie-Claire Rupio and their three children were in the stands at St James’ Park on Saturday to join in a tribute to the player before Newcastle’s Premier League match against Liverpool.

    Hours before the quake struck, Atsu, on February 5, scored the last of his 33 career goals for Hatayspor in Turkey’s Super Lig.

    His Turkish top-flight club, in homage to him on Twitter, said: “There are no words to describe our sadness.

    “We will not forget you, Atsu. Peace be upon you, beautiful person.”

    He previously played for his national team, the Black Stars.

    Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo said: “Football has lost one of its finest ambassadors, one who will be difficult to replace.”

    Turkey Earthquake: Turkish goalkeeper, Eyup Turkaslan dies

    The goalkeeper of Turkey,  Ahmet Eyup Turkaslan has died following Monday’s earthquake in his home country, his club Yeni Malatyaspor has confirmed.

    Turkaslan was the victim of one of many collapsed buildings in Turkey, the team said.

    “Our goalkeeper, Ahmet Eyup Turkaslan, lost his life after being under the collapse of the earthquake. Rest in peace,” the club said on Twitter.

    “We will not forget you, beautiful person,” it added.

    Turkaslan, 28, played six times for Turkish second division club Yeni Malatyaspor after joining in 2021.

    Former Crystal Palace and Everton winger Yannick Bolasie, who currently plays for Turkish second tier side Caykur Rizespor, said on Twitter: “RIP brother Eyup Ahmet Turkaslan. One moment you can see someone in the dugout, the next moment they’re gone.”

    Bolasie added: “My condolences to all his family and team-mates at Yeni Malatyaspor. Devastating to hear and wish we can all continue to help everyone in need.”

    The death toll from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that affected Turkey and Syria has surpassed 5,000 as of Tuesday afternoon and is expected to rise as more bodies are located.

    All professional football matches in Turkey have been postponed indefinitely amid the humanitarian crisis.

    Turkey Earthquake: Death toll rises to over 5, 000 with many persons still trapped

    Following the devastating natural disaster that engulfed the European country of Turkey,  the death toll in the Syrian-Turkish border region has risen to over 5, 000.

    Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay, announced during a press conference on Tuesday that Monday’s massive earthquakes and powerful aftershocks had killed at least 3,419 people and injured another 20,534 in southeastern part of the country.

    Additionally, at least 1,603 were killed and 3,649 injured in both government- and rebel-controlled areas of northwestern Syria, according to combined figures from the Syrian Ministry of Health and the Syrian civil defense and medical group that operates in opposition-held areas, known as the White Helmets.

    According to the Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority, AFAD,  more than 20,000 people were injured while many others were still trapped in the rubbles. The authority added that over 5,700 buildings were reported to have collapsed.

    Weather conditions were also very bad in the region, said Orhan Tatar, head of the earthquake and risk reduction department.

    He noted that the bad weather included heavy snowfall, downpours and strong winds in the affected regions. Temperatures are around freezing point in some places.

    The first earthquake measured at a magnitude of 7.8, struck southeast Turkey in the border region with Syria early on Monday morning and was followed at about noon by another quake with a magnitude of 7.5 with more than 285 aftershocks.
