Federal Government warns citizens from travelling to Northern Cyprus

The Federal Government of Nigeria has warned its citizens to desist from traveling to Cyprus in search of greener pastures.

The FG gave the warnings through the Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa at the 48th session of the state House Ministerial Media Briefing organized by the presidential communication Team at the presidential Villa in Abuja, the country’s capital.

Dabiri-Erewa cited the frequent killing of Nigerians in Cyprus, particularly in the Northern region of the country, as reasons the nationals must avoid traveling to the country.

Many Nigerians are in Northern Cyprus mainly to pursue tertiary education most especially foreign University degrees.

Erewa noted that both countries do not enjoy diplomatic relations because Northern Cyprus was not recognized by the International Community as a country except by Turkey.

“Think twice before going to Northern Cyprus. We can’t do much for Nigerians there. Our students are being killed daily.” She said

The NiDCOM chairman also said that every Nigerian stranded in Ukraine at the start of the conflict returned home safely.

She, however, expressed sadness that some of them were still going back

Dabiri-Erewa then advised Nigerian citizens to always be good ambassadors of the country in a foreign land.

BREAKING: 2022/2023 UEFA Champions League group stage decided

FC Barcelona will face Bayern Munich and Inter Milan in the 2022/2023 UEFA Champions League group stage following the draw made on Thursday.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the 2022/2023 UEFA Champions League draw which was held in Istanbul, Turkey, looked to be the meanest of all, as holders Real Madrid will take on RB Leipzig, Shakhtar Donetsk and Celtic in a seemingly-easy group.

Real Madrid captured a record-extending 14th European crown when they beat Liverpool in last season’s final. On paper, Carlo Ancelotti’s side should have few problems in making the last 16 from Group F.

However, FC Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski will take on his former side in the group stage after the five-times champions were drawn with Bayern Munich in Group C. They have been drawn along with Inter Milan and Viktoria Plzen.

Manchester City forward Erling Haaland will also face his former employers as the English champions were drawn in Group G with Borussia Dortmund. Sevilla and FC Copenhagen completed the group.

Qatari-owned Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) begin their quest for a maiden trophy in Europe’s elite club competition in a tricky Group H with Juventus, Benfica and Maccabi Haifa. Last season’s runners-up Liverpool meet Ajax Amsterdam, Napoli and Rangers in Group A.

  • Man battling with blood cancer needs N65m for bone marrow transplant

Man battling with blood cancer needs N65m for bone marrow transplant

A middle-aged man, Idris Abiodun Bakare has come down with Chronic Myelocytic Leukemia ( CML) a disease that infects the blood and the bone marrow. Abiodun has been diagnosed with CML since 2019 and he’s been living with it since then.

However, the disease is now treatment-resistant and he’s mandated to undergo a bone marrow transplant at Hisar Intercontinental Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey latest by August ending to avoid exacerbating the disease.

Abiodun narrates his predicament in a video’

‘It started with regular feverish feelings and general weakness of my body system. Before this time, I have never been sick nor admitted to any hospital. When the symptoms started manifesting, I didn’t initially pay attention to them till I one day fell while ironing my clothes. Before then, I only took some time off from my small business to relax at home. However, after the fall incident, I decided to visit the hospital because I experienced it more than once and was also losing weight,” Bakare explained.

According to him and from documents carrying his details sighted by this medium, his medical journey started in 2019 from Ikorodu General Hospital to the Lagos State Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja and later on referred to Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), Ile Ife, Osun State.

“I ran a series of tests at Ikorodu General Hospital that could not pinpoint exactly what was wrong with me. So I was asked to go for more comprehensive tests at LASUTH. It was after one of the tests at LASUTH that the doctor assigned to me (Dr. Dosunmu) noticed from the results that my spleen was enlarged and called for another test. The clinical summary and diagnosis of the second test confirmed that I have Chronic Myelocytic Leukemia (CML). I was also Hepatitis B virus-positive,” Bakare said in a teary voice.

“The drugs are scarce and expensive. There is a particular one that some NGOs are helping people living with this disease around the world get at a subsidized rate. But even at that, it is very expensive. Glivec (multinational brand of ImatiniB-) sells for close to two million nairas per two to four weeks of treatment. And you can imagine how many I must have used for over two years now. Aside from Glivec, I also use ULGICID, Oxyurea, Augmentin, Allopurinol, Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate, and other drugs too numerous to mention. Apart from the drugs, I also need to do tests from time to time to monitor progress or detect danger. I just did a TKD mutation analysis on Friday, 15th July at the cost of N50,000:00.”

Abiodun is appealing to well-meaning Nigerians to help him get back to his feet by donating to his bank FCMB bank account.

He needs the sum of 65 million naira to have the transplant done  to avoid worsening his health conditions.

The 65 million naira is needed for the transplant, donor, post-surgery, and logistics expenses.

His account number is; Bakare Idris Abiodun, 0646851016, FCMB.

  • FACT CHECK: Claim Turkey delisted Nigeria from countries eligible for e-visa after Kuje jailbreak false

FACT CHECK: Claim Turkey delisted Nigeria from countries eligible for e-visa after Kuje jailbreak false

Reports emerged Thursday that Nigerian visa applicants to the Republic of Turkey have been barred from accessing the e-visa provision and have instead been advised to apply through any Turkish Consulate.

The reports attribute the ban to Tuesday’s Kuje jailbreak by members of the ISWAP terrorist group that freed 879 inmates.

“Just in case you are planning to Japa (travel abroad) just know that the Kuje prison break has made the chances for you getting visa slim. Nigerians are no longer allowed to get e-visa to Turkey,” a twitter post claimed.

Similar posts shared on facebook and Instagram attracted a lot of comments, with many saying that President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent trip to Istanbul had not helped to strengthen bilateral relations between both countries.

    HOW TRUE IS THIS CLAIM?

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) investigations show that in recent years, many governments have outsourced their visa processing to external partners.

This has helped them to manage the increasing demand for visas in the age of booming international travel.

As such, one of such partners in charge of processing Turkey visas is iVisa, an online application website that provides customers with a simple, fast, and reliable way to get travel documentation for their journey.

This newspaper can confirm that the company is currently unable to process visa applications from Nigeria and other African countries, including Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa and Ghana. However, these countries appear on the search list of nationalities.

Applicants from the above named countries receive the following feedback message: “Travel Document Required. Currently, we cannot help you process this travel document. You will need to contact the embassy nearest you to get more information.”

There has been no official announcement from Turkey on a revised e-visa requirement for Africans and applications through other visa processing partners do not face the same challenge.

    VERDICT

MISLEADING: The claim that Turkey has delisted Nigeria from countries eligible for e-visa following the Kuje jailbreak is therefore false and should be disregarded by the public.

  • Don’t go to Northern Cyprus – NiDCOM advises Nigerians

Don’t go to Northern Cyprus – NiDCOM advises Nigerians

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has advised Nigerians seeking greener pastures against travelling to Northern Cyprus.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Dr Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO, NiDCOM gave the advice in a statement released by Mr Gabriel Odu, Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit of NiDCOM.

The advice followed a visit by members of the Nigerian Diaspora Youth Ambassador, which raised an alarm over the plight of Nigerian students in Northern Cyprus.

They said that Nigerian youths are suffering from intense depression as a result of the inhuman treatment meted to them, giving rise to the high rate of suicide amongst them in Northern Cyprus.

President of the Association, Mr David Alozie, who led a four-man delegation to Dabiri-Erewa in Abuja, said the purpose of the visit to the Commission is to appeal for quick intervention on the plight of Nigerian students in Northern Cyprus.

He added that Nigerian students are being racially profiled and deported on arrival at the airport for establishing contact with any individual in Southern Cyprus.

Mr Alozie added that Nigerian students are forced to pay for tuition in Pounds whereas other foreign students pay in Turkish Lira (TL).

Mr. Alozie and his team expressed willingness to collaborate with NiDCOM and other relevant agencies to create more awareness on the challenges Nigerian youths are facing in Northern Cyprus.

In his words “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is not the best place to study, as the majority of the institutions there are not recognized by the European Union (EU) or any country in the world”.

In her reaction, Dabiri-Erewa advised that Northern Cyprus is becoming a dangerous transit route for migrants, stressing that the country is not recognized by any country in the world except Turkey.

She, therefore, stressed the need for further awareness to sensitize Nigerian youths who are leaving their country with the hope of better education.

The NIDCOM Boss commended the President and his entire team’s efforts so far but explicitly stated that “the team has a bigger job to do in creating awareness for youths in Nigeria as it is better to stay in your country alive than risk your life in going to a country where uncountable and unresolved cases of young Nigerians have been and are still being recorded”.

Dabiri-Erewa gave assurance that NiDCOM will continue to work with relevant agencies like the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the Parent Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the nagging issue of Northern Cyprus.

“It should be noted that Northern Cyprus is recognized only by the Republic of Turkey, and Nigeria and other countries do not have an Embassy there making it difficult to take Northern Cyprus up with the United Nations or European Union,” she noted.

  • Rivers governor Nyesom Wike jets out to Turkey on vacation

After going through a very exhausting political activities in the past few days, Rivers State Governor and former presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) Nyesom Wike has departed the shores of Nigeria to go on vacation in Turkey.

Wike left for Turkey in company of the Abia state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu and former commissioner for sports in Rivers state Boma Iyaye and Marcus Nlee.

The Rivers born politician took to his twitter handle to share lovely photos of the vacation in Instabul on Tuesday.

His tweet reads, “Finally in Turkey for a much needed vacation with my brother, Governor Okezie Ikpaezu”.

Recall that Wike has been involved in many closed door meetings with many politicians across political parties in the country.

  • UN now recognises the Republic of Turkey as “Turkiye” – Spokesperson

The United Nations has approved the change of name request from the Republic of Turkey which now wants to be known and addressed as “Türkiye”, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric has confirmed.

Dujarric said the country’s name change became effective from the moment the letter was received.

The government had been pushing for the country to be recognised as Turkiye (pronounced tur-key-ye) as it is spelt and pronounced in Turkish since December. It is the name the country called itself when it gained independence in 1923.

In a letter addressed to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, requesting the use of “Türkiye” instead of “Turkey” for all affairs which was received on Wednesday from the Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, the country said the new name better represents Turkish culture and values, allowing them to determine how the country is seen.

Turkish ministers started using it in official documents last year and “Made in Turkey” on exported products has also been ordered to change to “Made in Türkiye”.

RT World, a Turkish news channel, explained in an article earlier this year that googling “turkey” shows a “muddled set of images, articles and dictionary definitions” that confuses the country with the “bird native to North America”.

It added, the Cambridge dictionary defines Turkey as “something that fails badly” or “stupid or silly person”.

Earlier this year the Turkish government released a promotional video showing tourists from around the world saying “Hello Turkiye” at famous destinations.

The Turkish presidency’s directorate of communications said it launched the campaign “to promote more effectively the use of ‘Turkiye’ as the country’s national and international name on international platforms”.

WAR: Turkey set to host Russia, Ukraine peace talks

Russian and Ukrainian foreign ministers have arrived Turkey for the continuation of the peace talks between the two waring neighbours.

Officials from Kyiv and Moscow have held several rounds of discussions in Belarus, but the meeting in the southern city of Antalya represents the first time Russia has sent a minister for talks on the crisis.

The Ukrainaian foreign ministry spokeperson Oleg Nikolenko, made a tweet where he announced that the foreign minister of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba is already in Antalya for talks on Russia ending its war on Ukraine.

The Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has also landed in Turkey for same purpose

Dialogue between Kyiv and Moscow has so far yielded several local ceasefires and humanitarian corridors to evacuate residents, but Russia has been accused of breaching those agreements.

In a facebook post, Ukrainian foreign minister Kuleba, mentioned that he would be in Turkey for the negotiations but his expectations are very limited.

He said the success of the talks would depend on “what instructions and directives Lavrov is under” from the Kremlin.

“I am not pinning any great hopes on them, but we will try and get the most out of” the talks with effective preparation, he said.
Recall that The Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan has always solicited for Turkey to host the peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.
The Russian and Ukrainian ministers will be joined at Thursday’s meeting by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, with NATO member Turkey keen to maintain strong relations with both sides despite the conflict.
