Why our official Twitter account was suspended – NCC

The Twitter account of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), @NgComCommission has been restored.

This followed a temporary suspension by Twitter, a decision taken to ensure the safety of the account owner, NCC and its thousands of followers.

Twitter’s security features had interpreted the multiple Online staff Internet Protocol (IP) logins as a suspected attempt to hack the Commission’s Twitter account, hence the decision to immediately suspend the account to protect the account and its followers from any security breaches or compromises.

However, in a swift response the Commission filed an appeal with Twitter Support, explaining the circumstance and requesting it to lift the suspension on the account.

Twitter, in its response to the appeal to un-suspend the account, clearly stated that “If we suspect an account has been hacked or compromised, we may suspend it until it can be secured and restored to the account owner in order to reduce potentially malicious activities caused by the compromise.”

Although Twitter can suspend accounts on two grounds: to maintain a safe environment for users on Twitter or its account violates Twitter Rules. In the NCC’ case, the suspension was based on the former ground, essentially to ensure the safety and protection of the Commission’s account.

To this end, the Commission wishes to clarify that the temporary suspension of its Twitter account was NEVER as a result of any violation of Twitter Rules but rather, as part of standard safety measures by Twitter management to safeguard its users’ accounts, as may be interpreted by embedded security features of the microblogging site.

As a foremost telecoms regulatory agency that ensures compliance with rules and also enforces rules in the sector it regulates, the NCC complies with extant rules of engagements, backed with high level of integrity and ethical practice, which have been nationally acknowledged.

The Commission, therefore, thanks its followers, telecoms consumers and other industry stakeholders for their understanding and concerns during the hiatus created by the suspension and assures them that Twitter’s action was essentially to protect the NCC and its online followers.

The Commission has taken steps to ensure that necessary streamlining required is implemented to keep the account live and accessible to all its stakeholders at all times.

NCC’s Twitter account currently has over 124, 000 followers and the Commission essentially uses the account to, among others, provide and disseminate up-to-date corporate communication and information on its regulatory activities to its various stakeholders, inform and educate consumers on their rights and privileges, as well as to receive and resolve consumers complaints in real-time.

Twitter has suspended the account of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on the microblogging platform.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports @NgComCommission is the official Twitter account of the independent national regulatory authority for the telecommunications industry in Nigeria.

The Commission is responsible for creating an enabling environment for competition among operators in the industry as well as ensuring the provision of qualitative and efficient telecommunications services throughout the country.

As Nigeria’s regulator for the telecommunications industry, the NCC oversees the activities of all of the nation’s service providers including providers of Internet services, and technology regulations.

Though no reason has been given yet for the suspension of the official Twitter account of the commission, a quick check confirmed the suspension.

The NCC is yet to release an official statement to address the development.

Twitter accounts of founders of BioNTech vaccine coy fake

Twitter accounts purported to be those of Ugur Sahin and Ozlem Tureci, the founders of the German firm BioNTech, which raised hopes of a vaccine for the novel coronavirus last week are fake, BioNTech said on Monday.

It made the announcement through its own Twitter account.

The company said it had asked Twitter to delete all personal accounts linked to Sahin and Tureci, the married couple who are both on the executive board of the company.

BioNTech made global headlines with the announcement a week ago that together with its partner, U.S. giant Pfizer, it became the first pharmaceutical to develop a vaccine that was 90 per cent effective against the coronavirus.

The companies are reported to be ready to apply to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration this month for emergency approval for their vaccine.

U.S. ELECTIONS: Twitter labels 300,000 misleading tweets

Social media giant, Twitter, says it labelled approximately 300,000 tweets for disputed and “potentially misleading” contents about the U.S. elections over the last two weeks.

Twitter’s Head of Legal, Policy and Trust, Vijaya Gadde, and its Head of Product, Kayvon Beykpour, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday evening.

According to Gadde and Beykpour, the affected tweets represent 0.2 per cent of no fewer than 150 million U.S. election-related messages sent on the platform during the two-week period.

“More than a year ago, the public told us they wanted Twitter to offer context on misleading information.

“This is the exact approach we’ve implemented on Tweets about COVID-19, synthetic and manipulated media, and the 2020 U.S. election that could contribute to offline harm.

“We continue to apply labels to add context and limit the risk of harmful election misinformation spreading without important context,” they said.

The officials said 456 of the affected tweets received warning messages and had their engagement features limited during the period between Oct. 27 and Nov. 11.

They said the enforcement actions were part of ongoing efforts to limit the spread of misleading information about election processes around the world on Twitter.

U.S. President Donald Trump is one of those affected by the company’s enforcement actions.

Trump’s tweets on unsubstantiated claims about voter fraud in the election have been repeatedly labelled or covered by the company.

“We remain vigilant and will continue working to protect the integrity of the election conversation on Twitter.

“As we’ve done for many elections around the world, we will produce a longer-form retrospective of all of our work around the 2020 U.S. Election in early 2021.

“We will continue to research, question, and change features that may encourage behaviours on Twitter that negatively affect the health of the public conversation,” Gadde and Beykpour added.

Turkey fines Facebook, Twitter, TikTok for defying social media law

Turkey has imposed hefty fines on Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and other platforms, for violating a new law that exerts greater control over social media.

The announcement was made, ironically on Twitter, by Deputy Transport and Infrastructure Minister Omer Sayan on Wednesday.

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Periscope, YouTube and TikTok, were each fined 10 million lira (1.17 million dollars), Sayan said.

They were penalised for failing to appoint a representative based in Turkey, within the legally mandated deadline.

The law, described as “draconian’’ by rights groups and free speech campaigners, was passed by parliament in July and went into effect in October.

It states that foreign social media platforms accessed by more than 1 million daily users in Turkey would have to appoint legal representatives based in Turkey.

Failure to do so would result in heavy fines, advertising bans and gradually having the platform’s bandwidth slashed, rendering it unusable.

They will also have to store users’ data in Turkey, making it easier for the authorities to access.

Turkish authorities often target social media users over content deemed illegal.

In July, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for greater control over social media which he described as a “source of lies.’’

Erdogan’s anger came after his grandson’s birth announcement prompted attacks on Twitter.

Sayan, however, said he had confidence that the social media networks would comply and appoint representatives.

“Our intent is not to be in conflict with these providers, which serve billions of people around the world,’’ he tweeted.

Twitter flags Trump for misinformation over electoral fraud allegation

Micro-blogging site, Twitter, has flagged US President Donald Trump’s claim of electoral fraud in the ongoing American presidential election.

Votes are still being counted across the country but President Trump took to Twitter to claim “they are trying to STEAL the Election.”

The first version of his tweet was taken down because he misspelled polls as “poles.”

It’s uncertain what exactly set off this tweet in particular but it came amid outrage from the President’s camp (and the state’s Republican governors) about Fox News calling Arizona for Joe Biden.

The President also claimed a “big WIN!” and teased comments he will be making soon.

It took very little time before the President’s first tweet was flagged by Twitter for spreading election misinformation.

“Some or all of the content shared in this Tweet is disputed and might be misleading about an election or other civic process,” a message on the tweet reads.

The President was immediately called out for his claim, including by one Republican congressman.

Adam Kinzinger tweeted @RepKinzinger “Stop. Full stop. The votes will be counted and you will either win or lose. And America will accept that. Patience is a virtue.”

U.S. election: Twitter, Facebook outline action to take if candidate declares premature victory

Social media companies Twitter Inc and Facebook Inc on Monday outlined plans for placing warning labels on posts from U.S. election candidates and campaigns that claim victory in advance of official results.

The moves come as social network platforms brace for what has been an unusual election cycle due to a high number of mail-in ballots that may cause a delay in final results.

Beginning on election night through the inauguration, Twitter said it would place warning labels such as “official sources called this election differently”, or “official sources may not have called the race when this was tweeted”.

Facebook will add specific information in news feed notifications in its apps and in the labels on posts if a candidate or a party declares premature victory, and will continue to show latest results in its Voting Information Centre, it said in a separate statement.

Facebook said it will also monitor a range of issues in real time on Election Day, including reports of voter suppression content, and will remove any attempts to suppress participation or intimidate voters.

U.S.-based accounts with over 100,000 followers and a significant engagement will also be considered for labeling, Twitter said.

Social media companies are under pressure to combat election-related misinformation and prepare for the possibility of violence or poll place intimidation around the November vote.

In an updated blog, Twitter said it would consider state election officials and national news outlets such as ABC News, Associated Press, CNN and Fox News that have independent election decision desks as official sources for results.

Their official Twitter accounts will be exempted from labeling, the company said.
