Twitter issues fact check of Trump tweets for first time

Twitter issued a fact check of some of Donald Trump’s tweets on Tuesday, marking the first time the U.S. president’s favoured social media platform has pushed back against him spreading falsehoods.

The move, which almost immediately heightened tensions between Trump and the social media giant, came in the form of a label under two of the president’s tweets, which claimed that mail-in voter ballots are subject to extreme fraud.

The label says “Get the facts about mail-in ballots,” and then redirects users to news articles and a bulleted list refuting Trump’s claims.

Shortly after Twitter issued the fact check, the president accused the company of “interfering” in the November presidential election and impinging on free speech.

“Twitter is completely stifling FREE SPEECH, and I, as President, will not allow it to happen!” he tweeted while doubling down on voter fraud claims.

It is unclear how Twitter will treat Trump’s future tweets that promote false information.

On Tuesday, Trump issued separate tweets promoting a baseless conspiracy theory about Joe Scarborough, a liberal television news host and former congressman, which were not fact-checked by Twitter.

Nick Pacilio, a Twitter spokesman, would not comment on whether the company will continue to fact-check Trump’s tweets, saying the label is used “based on what people tweet.”

Twitter has faced a growing backlash for giving the president a massive platform to spread false information.

Trump, who has more than 80 million Twitter followers, says his use of social media is essential to bypass what he sees as a biased media establishment.

“Partnering with biased fake news ‘fact checkers’ is a smoke screen to lend Twitter’s obvious political tactics false credibility,” Trump’s campaign manager Brad Parscale said in a statement responding to Twitter flagging the president’s tweets.

“There are many reasons we pulled all our advertising from Twitter months ago, and clear political bias is one of them,” Parscale added.

The president has increasingly claimed that mail-in ballots are subject to high rates of fraud at at time when some states are increasing access to postal voting to protect public health ahead of the November presidential elections.

Election law experts say there is little evidence of increased fraud in mail-in ballots, as general voter fraud remains extremely low.

Republicans have long pushed to tighten the process for voter registration as Democrats have sought to expand voter accessibility.

Some studies show increased voter turnout is a boon for Democratic candidates.

In June of last year, Twitter said that it would mark tweets deemed to be in the public interest that violate its policies on such things as abusive behaviour and public safety.

  • Lagos carries out Twitter survey to determine lockdown restoration

Lagos Government has conducted a survey on Twitter to determine if the lockdown would be restored in the state.

TheNewsGuru recalls that Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of the state had recently threatened to revert to full lockdown if there is no progress in adherence to the public health guidelines.

On Tuesday, the Lagos government took to its official Twitter handle to ask inhabitants of the state if they think another lockdown should be imposed based on the defiance of health measures.

“Considering the level of compliance with government’s directives on limiting the spread of Covid-19 in a Lagos State, should the State Government impose another lockdown or not?” it asked.

Tagging the governor and his deputy, the state’s ministry of health and commissioner for health, the survey included the options: ‘Lockdown’, ‘Don’t Lockdown’, and ‘Neutral’.

The survey, which is expected to end on Friday, sees 49 percent of Lagosians requesting for ‘Lockdown’ while 39 percent would go for the ‘Dont Lockdown’, as of the time this report was filed.

With Lagos being the epicentre of the COVID-19 outbreak in Nigeria, the country has so far reported 4,961 confirmed cases of the disease alongside 164 deaths and 1,070 recoveries.

“Despite massive advocacy, it is disappointing to see the crowd at banks & markets across the state flouting the guidelines,” Sanwo-Olu had said in a tweet.

“We will be forced to take the painful decision of bringing the state under lockdown if it remains clear that Lagosians are determined to flout the rules.

“We will not hesitate to review the terms of easing the lockdown if we do not see an improvement in the adherence to our public health guidelines over the next couple of days.”

  • Twitter expresses readiness to allow employees work from home ‘forever’

Twitter announced on Tuesday that it could allow employees to continue to work from home indefinitely even after the end of the coronavirus crisis.

Jennifer Christie, Twitter’s head of human resources, said if employees were in a position to work from home and they wanted to continue to do so “forever”, Twitter would “make it possible”.

Christie’s post said Twitter was one of the first companies to implement the stay-at-home model in early March.

According to media reports, several other tech companies, such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, did the same.

The company said offices would remain closed until at least September, “with very few exceptions”.

“Opening offices will be our decision,” a company spokesperson told NBC News.

“When and if our employees come back, will be theirs,” the spokesman added.

  • El-Rufai’s son dragged on Twitter for criticising Trump, threatening to ‘gang-rape’ critic

Bello, son of Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai on Sunday landed in Twitter trouble over his response to Nigerian social media users who criticized his comment on United States President Donald Trump.

Bello in a tweet inferred that the President of the United States, Donald Trump is an “incompetent leader”. The governor’s son further said that this term was applicable to the leaders of “a few states in Nigeria” too.

“There is nothing as radioactive as an incompetent leader during a time of crisis. The United States of America is a case in point. A few states in Nigeria too.”

The subliminal jab at Trump did not go well with a number of social media users who reacted by bringing to bare comparisons between the administration of Donald Trump and Nigeria’s President Buhari as well as Bello’s father, Nasir El-Rufai.

However, in his comeback response to the criticisms, Bello resorted to insults and threats including calling.

When advised to retract this DM, he stated expressly that he will stand by his words:

Bello’s mother, Hadiza Isma El-Rufai in response to those tagging her to call her son to order stated that she saw no wrong in his actions as he merely dished out was served to him.

  • Trending: Twitter users kick, over Pastor Adeboye’s advice

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, on Wednesday advised couples to be faithful with their partners.

Adebayo made this statement via his twitter handle @ PastorEAAdeboye, where he shared some of his thoughts.

He said couples should try not to place anything before their families, making their families second.

“One of my sons once told me that he was always excited to resume in his office every Monday because he would get to see his secretary again.

“I told him to fire her immediately. Nothing and no one is worth your marriage.

    CRUSH THAT CRUSH !!!

“What is a married woman doing on the phone with another man for countless minutes? Why will a married man be spending so much time with another man’s wife?

“Why would you prefer to discuss intimate issues with your “friend” of the opposite sex instead of your God-given spouse?

“You may say “I am not doing anything with the fellow; we are just friends.” That is exactly where it starts from. The devil knows you are a Christian and would not fall for someone just like that.

However, some users kicked against the advise, saying it was extreme, while some others supported him.

Kelechi +_@igwilo responded saying; “Pastor adeboye; I heard what you said and I know what you meant. Yet! Sacking that lady from her position doesn’t stop him from going after her if he wants something more from her”.

@tweeetbro said “I don’t know why you guys are finding faults with Pastor Adeboye’s tweet. My Bible said, if your prick will lead you to sin, cut if off ???

“No one should be closer to you or know more about you than your spouse.

“If thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.”

“Pastor Adeboye, an innocent woman (who might have people depending on her) lost her job, at your command, because your son couldn’t control himself & you are proud to tell us? Why? ??

@Adunni_Achebe, Did u just say that u told ur son to fire an innocent lady for no fault of hers, but simply out of fear that Adeboye jnr won’t be able to control his penis?

Not transfer her to another department but to fire her???

U can’t see anything wrong with this?…hian, man of god?
