Zuckerberg ‘mocks’ Twitter in leaked internal Facebook meetings

Founder Mark Zuckerberg in leaked internal meetings of Facebook laughed over the investment status of Twitter, stressing that the microblogging platform can’t put in investment as does his social media platform.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Zuckerberg was addressing the issue of potential breakup of Facebook in one of the meetings when he said Facebook’s investment on safety is bigger than the whole revenue of Twitter, and then laughed.

Parts of the leaked internal meetings read: “Well, I think you want to separate out a couple of things. I’m certainly more worried that someone is going to try to break up our company.

“Now, there’s a separate question about, at the end of the day, there is the rule of law — which, for all of the concern about the direction the country is going in, as someone running a company that operates in a lot of different countries, I have to say one of the things that I love and appreciate about our country the most is that we have a really solid rule of law, which is very different from a lot of other places around the world.

“So there might be a political movement where people are angry at the tech companies or are worried about concentration or worried about different issues and worried that they’re not being handled well.

“That doesn’t mean that, even if there’s anger and that you have someone like Elizabeth Warren who thinks that the right answer is to break up the companies … I mean, if she gets elected president, then I would bet that we will have a legal challenge, and I would bet that we will win the legal challenge.

“And does that still suck for us? Yeah. I mean, I don’t want to have a major lawsuit against our own government. I mean, that’s not the position that you want to be in when you’re, you know, I mean … it’s like, we care about our country and want to work with our government and do good things. But look, at the end of the day, if someone’s going to try to threaten something that existential, you go to the mat and you fight.

“And I just think the case is not particularly strong on this … It’s just that breaking up these companies, whether it’s Facebook or Google or Amazon, is not actually going to solve the issues. And, you know, it doesn’t make election interference less likely. It makes it more likely because now the companies can’t coordinate and work together.

“It doesn’t make any of the hate speech or issues like that less likely. It makes it more likely because now … all the processes that we’re putting in place and investing in, now we’re more fragmented.

“It’s why Twitter can’t do as good of a job as we can. I mean, they face, qualitatively, the same types of issues. But they can’t put in the investment. Our investment on safety is bigger than the whole revenue of their company. [laughter] And yeah, we’re operating on a bigger scale, but it’s not like they face qualitatively different questions. They have all the same types of issues that we do.

“So yes, I think that the direction of the discussion is concerning. I at least believe, I think, there are real issues. I don’t think that the antitrust remedies are going to solve them. But I understand that if we don’t help address those issues and help put in place a regulatory framework where people feel like there’s real accountability, and the government can govern our sector, then yeah, people are just going to keep on getting angrier and angrier.

“And they’re going to demand more extreme measures, and, eventually, people just say, “Screw it, take a hammer to the whole thing.” And that’s when the rule of law comes in, and I’m very grateful that we have it”.

  • EU urges Facebook, Google, Twitter to fight disinformation as European elections approach

As the electoral campaigns ahead of the crucial European Parliamentary elections will start in March, the EU need to see more progress on the commitments made by Facebook, Google and Twitter to fight disinformation, it said.

The online platforms, signatories of EU’s Code of Practice against disinformation, failed to provide enough details showing that new policies and tools are being deployed timely and with sufficient resources inside the Union, read the statement.

To defend the integrity of the European Parliament elections in May, the pan-Europe body demands these three online platforms to report monthly on their actions.

But the latest submitted reports “provide too little information on the actual results of the measures already taken,” said the statement.

“We urge Facebook, Google and Twitter to do more across all Member States to help ensure the integrity of the European Parliament elections in May 2019.

“We also encourage platforms to strengthen their cooperation with fact-checkers and academic researchers to detect disinformation campaigns and make fact-checked content more visible and widespread,” said the statement.

The monitoring of the Code of Practice is part of the Action Plan against disinformation that the EU adopted in December 2018 to build up capabilities and strengthen cooperation between member states.

And also the code was part of plan against EU institutions to proactively address the threats posed by disinformation.

The European Parliament elections are expected to be held between May 23 and May 26, 2019.

Amid growing populism inside Europe, the elections are expected to change the EU’s political dynamics.

  • Twitter launches political ad tracking tools in Europe ahead of key EU polls

Twitter on Tuesday rolled out tools in Europe which would make it easier for voters to identify political campaign ads tied to crucial European Parliament elections in May amidst fears of Russian disinformation campaigns and threats of regulatory action.

Social networks such as Twitter and Facebook have come under pressure to do more to combat fake news and the spread
    of extremism and propaganda online.

The EU is concerned about Russia’s role. Russia has repeatedly denied any such actions.

Twitter said its political campaigning ads policy, introduced during the U.S. midterm elections, will also be launched
in India and Australia, both of which are also heading to the polls.

In essence it means that anyone can view ads put on Twitter endorsing a party or a candidate on its Ads Transparency
Centre, with details on billing information, ad spending and demographic targeting data.

The ads will be available indefinitely.

A visual label and disclaimer information on promoted content will allow users to identify political campaign ads and
    who paid for them.

“Our political campaigning ads policy is being expanded to cover #EUElections2019, providing the general public
with an additional layer of insight into, who is running a political campaign ad on Twitter,” the company said in a blog post.

It said candidates or organisations will have to go through a certification process with proof of identity before they can
run political campaigning ads on its site.

This policy will kick off on March 11.

  • Russia wants Facebook, Twitter to localize users database

Roskomnadzor, the Russian telecom watchdog, has said it will punish Facebook and Twitter if they decline to move the database of Russian users to Russia.

Roskomnadzor head, Alexander Zharov was quoted to have said this on Tuesday.

“The companies will either have to localize the databases within a certain period of time, which I suppose will be about nine months, or they will be punished,” Zharov said.

He expects Twitter and Facebook representatives to meet with Roskomnadzor officials in Moscow by the end of February to discuss the issue.

Russian legislation requires Internet service providers to store and process personal data of Russians on the territory of Russia.

Roskomnadzor has the right to impose fines on or even block Internet companies for their violations.

In December, it fined Google around $7,625 for failing to remove search links to banned information.

Last year, Roskomnadzor attempted to block instant messaging app Telegram in Russia due to its refusal to provide user data, but failed for technical reasons.

  • Twitter new web interface rolls out to users globally

Twitter is rolling out its new web interface to users globally, including several key features, like a newly designed emoji button.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) observed the most important changes are tiny shortcuts the micro-blogging platform made to enable tweeting easier.

“Some of you got an opt-in to try it now. Check out the emoji button, quick keyboard shortcuts, upgraded trends, advanced search, and more. Let us know your thoughts,” Twitter tweeted of the new web interface.

A large, dedicated button in the tweet box makes it easier to add an emoji, an updated trending section appears on the right-hand side of the page, and little aesthetic updates make it easier to see who’s involved in a conversation.

The changes, alongside the way Twitter’s desktop version has condensed from three columns into two, should make it easier to both read and send tweets.

“Tried it yesterday – definitely an improvement,” a Twitter user said of the new web interface.

However, some users have expressed disappointment the update did not come with the much-awaited edit button.

Twitter chief executive officer (CEO), Jack Dorsey had said the micro-blogging platform was considering an option for users to be able to edit tweets.

On why the micro-blogging site lacks the feature, Dorsey said the platform was built on the SMS format of text messaging

“Maybe we introduce a 5-30 seconds delay in the sending of tweet and within that window, you can edit because the issue with going longer than that is it takes that real-time nature of the conversational flow out of it.

“Once you send a text, you can’t take it back. When you send a tweet, it goes to the world instantaneously. You can’t take it back,” Dorsey said.

“When are you planning to have an edit button @jack for the posts? You know people make mistakes sometimes when they tweet,” a user queried.

However, Twitter did not immediately reply the query.

  • Twitter records better-than-expected revenue despite drop in users

Twitter records better-than-expected revenue despite drop in users

Twitter recorded a better-than-expected increase in revenue, according to fourth-quarter report released on Thursday, despite drop in monthly active users in the same period.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Twitter attributed the drop in monthly active users, in part, to its campaign of deleting millions of abusive accounts.

Twitter’s overall revenue rose to $909 million in the quarter, and total advertising revenue rose 23 percent to $791 million.

The micro-blogging firm said more than half of total advertising revenue came from video ads placed by corporate clients.

Revenue from data licensing and other non-advertising businesses rose 35 percent from a year earlier to $117 million, the firm reported.

The number of average daily active users exposed to Twitter ads, a new figure disclosed by the company, rose to 126 million in the fourth quarter from 115 million a year ago and 124 million in the previous quarter.

Monthly active users totaled 321 million. That was in line with analysts’ forecasts, but down from 330 million a year earlier and 326 million in the third quarter.

Twitter said that after the current quarter it would stop disclosing monthly active users, a statistic that has become standard among internet companies over the last decade.

For the current quarter, Twitter said it expected total revenue to be between $715 million and $775 million. Analysts are expecting about $765 million, on average.

Twitter said it expects operating expenses to rise about 20 percent year-on-year in 2019 due to efforts to improve its service, above analysts’ average estimate of 12 percent.

It expects capital expenditures to be between $550 million and $600 million, well above analysts’ average estimate of $415 million for 2019.
