Twitter begins operation to wipe out millions of “fake” followers

Twitter will on Thursday run a major operation to delete accounts of fake followers, its president in charge of trust and safety has announced.

Vijaya Gadde said in a statement that the clean-up will affect accounts that were frozen over the years for suspicious behavior.

“This week, we’ll be removing these locked accounts from follower counts across profiles globally. As a result, the number of followers displayed on many profiles may go down,” she wrote.

The New York Times newspaper said Twitter planned to begin deleting tens of millions of accounts starting Thursday, slashing the total followship by six per cent.

The measure is reportedly aimed at users who have inflated their followships by paying for automated accounts to fake social media influence.

  • Shocking! Nigerian ladies join #BigBreastTwitter trend

Nigerian ladies have joined the #BigBreastTwitter trend and it has sparked mixed reactions amongst Nigerians on Twitter.

While some young Nigerian men see it as an opportunity to ogle on the pictures, others simply condemned the trend as indecent and unnecessary.

Women are mostly bothered about the size of their boobs, whether it is big or small. Some have even taken steps to go for an implant because they are dissatisfied with the size.

  • Breaking: Cambridge Analytica shuts down operations

Breaking: Cambridge Analytica shuts down operations

SCL Elections and its offspring data analytics firm, Cambridge Analytic (CA), have filed applications to commence insolvency proceedings in the United Kingdom that will also affect operations of certain SCL affiliates.

TheNewsGuru reports the Company is immediately ceasing all operations and the boards have applied to appoint insolvency practitioners Crowe Clark Whitehill LLP to act as the independent administrator for Cambridge Analytica.

CA made this known in a statement, and also said parallel bankruptcy proceedings will soon be commenced on behalf of the firm and certain of the Company’s U.S. affiliates in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

Giving reasons for the shutting down of operations, the Company said it has lost customers and suppliers in the wake of numerous accusations levied against it.

“The siege of media coverage has driven away virtually all of the Company’s customers and suppliers. As a result, it has been determined that it is no longer viable to continue operating the business, which left Cambridge Analytica with no realistic alternative to placing the Company into administration,” the statement by CA read.

“While this decision was extremely painful for Cambridge Analytica’s leaders, they recognize that it is all the more difficult for the Company’s dedicated employees who learned today that they likely would be losing their jobs as a result of the damage caused to the business by the unfairly negative media coverage.

“Despite the Company’s precarious financial condition, Cambridge Analytica intends to fully meet its obligations to its employees, including with respect to notice periods, severance terms, and redundancy entitlements,” the statement further read.

Both SCL and CA have continued to deny the numerous accusations levied against them, stressing the suggestion that CA was somehow involved in any work done by AggregateIQ in the 2016 EU referendum is entirely false.

CA, however, confirmed in 2014 and 2015, it subcontracted some digital marketing and software development to AggregateIQ, and expressed pleasure The Guardian acknowledging AggregateIQ has never been a direct part of CA.

“And the Guardian also apologised on April 1st for incorrectly “suggest(ing) that AIQ secretly and unethically co-ordinated with Cambridge Analytica on the EU referendum.

“We are pleased that @guardian has finally acknowledged that AggregateIQ has never been a direct part of Cambridge Analytica nor been the Canadian branch of SCL,” CA tweeted.

TheNewsGuru reports Facebook had confirmed to parliament that CA spent no money on ads on their platform for the EU referendum.

CA also debunked it has never received Twitter data from GSR or Aleksandr Kogan, and has never done any work with GSR on Twitter data.

“GSR was only ever a contractor to Cambridge Analytica and we understand it did work for many other companies,” CA stated.

  • Cambridge Analytica: Twitter involvement comes to light

After the Facebook data scandal, it has now come to notice that Twitter had also sold data access to a Cambridge Analytica researcher who gathered the data of nearly 87 million Facebook users without their knowledge, The Sunday Telegraph reported.

According to the report, Twitter sold public data access in 2015 to Aleksandr Kogan, then a psychology researcher with University of Cambridge and his company Global Science Research (GSR).

The quiz app “This Is Your Digital Life” developed by Kogan and his firm, collected data from millions of Facebook users without their consent in 2014-2015.

“GSR paid for one day of access in 2015, Twitter said, and scooped up a ‘random sample’ of public tweets covering a period between December 2014 and April 2015. Twitter added that it ‘did not find any access’ to private information,” the report noted.

Kogan reportedly said the Twitter data had only been used to create “brand reports” and “survey extender tools” and that he had not violated Twitter’s policies.

Twitter, however, said it had banned GSR and Cambridge Analytica from buying data or running adverts on the website and that no private data had been accessed.

“Twitter has also made the policy decision to off-board advertising from all accounts owned and operated by Cambridge Analytica.

“This decision is based on our determination that Cambridge Analytica operates using a business model that inherently conflicts with acceptable Twitter Ads business practices,” The Telegraph reported, citing a Twitter spokesperson.

In a first interview after the Facebook data scandal broke out, Kogan told CBS News earlier this month that he was not sure whether he ever read Facebook’s developer policy.

“The idea that we stole the data, I think, is technically incorrect. I mean, they created these great tools for developers to collect the data.

“And they made it very easy. I mean, this was not a hack. This was, ‘Here’s the door. It’s open. We’re giving away the groceries. Please collect them’,” Kogan told the TV show host.

Kogan said he believes his assumptions were misguided and that what he did in 2014 “was not right and was not wise”.

  • JUST IN: APC announces new official Internet platforms

Following reports by TheNewsGuru of the All Progressives Congress (APC) rejigging its Internet platforms, the ruling party has announced the launch of a newly-designed website and other official social media handles.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi made this known on Sunday after the party recently acknowledged that it had no official Twitter handle and distanced itself from the @APCNigeria Twitter handle.

“The newly-designed website features a streamlined and uncluttered design, offering user-friendly functionality and rich content. This website as well as the official social media accounts offer quick and easy access to essential information and features to keep party members, the media and indeed the general public abreast of party activities, the APC-led federal government and APC-governed states.

“Visitors are encouraged to explore the new website and sign up for APC’s mailing list and newsletter to receive direct emails on the Contact Us page. Also follow the APC on the listed social media accounts,” the APC scribe stated.

The new APC website and social media accounts are: www.officialapcng.com; Twitter, https://twitter.com/OfficialAPCNg; Facebook, https://web.facebook.com/officialapcng/; Instagram; https://www.instagram.com/officialapcng/; and YouTube; Official APC Nigeria.

Findings by TheNewsGuru, amongst other information published here, reveals that the newly launched APC website is being managed by one Ololade Otayemi who operates Orbra I.T.C. located in Lokogoma, Abuja.

The APC said its new website will be regularly updated with news on party accomplishments and events.

  • APC Nigeria moving platforms

From all indications, Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), is rejigging its platforms on the Internet, ranging from its websites to its social media handles.

TheNewsGuru reports Twitter erupted in confusion on Saturday after Spokesman of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi disowned the party’s supposed official account, @APCNigeria.

This is following reports that the account was ‘sold’ as reported in some quarters in the media or hacked as TheNewsGuru.com verifiably reports.

Today, Personal Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on New Media, Bashir Ahmad further disowned the @APCNigeria Twitter handle and revealed the party “is now officially on Twitter”.

“Our great party, the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) is now officially on Twitter. Kindly follow @OfficialAPCNg. Also on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube,” he tweeted.

When TheNewsGuru assessed the various Internet platforms of the ruling party, findings reveal that the APC is actually moving platforms, which includes a new domain name registration that has one Ololade Otayemi as registrant.

TheNewsGuru findings reveal that Mr. Otayemi, who operates Orbra I.T.C. located in Lokogoma, Abuja registered the www.officialapcng.com domain name on Monday 9th April 2018.

The first tweet on the APC new official Twitter handle dated Tuesday 10 April 2018, and the first post on the party’s new official Facebook page dated Sunday 8 April 2018, confirm the new domain name registration, and efforts the party is putting in to rejig its Internet platforms.

The APC official website is being hosted on a German server by Softlayer Technologies Inc, and efforts to reach Olalade to confirm the findings repeatedly returned: “The MTN number you are trying to call is currently switched off; please try again later” as at the time of filing this report.

The party’s Instagram handle, created today, is presently having 29 followers; and while the new Twitter handle is having 22 followers, the new Facebook page is having 106 page likes.

In a phone conversation with TheNewsGuru.com, the manager of the APC former Twitter handle, Phillip Obin, confirmed the account was hacked and not sold.

“The account was hacked, but I am currently engaging Twitter to help restore it… we have gotten an assurance that the challenge will be sorted out soonest” he said.

According to a tweet from the hacker, the account was reportedly sold for ‘$2k’. The hacker also went ahead to post tweets relating to the sale and purchase of bitcoins.

A Twitter user who goes by the name Justin Sun on his Twitter handle is alleged to have claimed that someone he identified as “Nigerian president” sold the official @APCNigeria Twitter handle to him.

A rapidly circulating tweet with suspicious verified Twitter handle, “Justin Sun @APCNigeria,” shows one Mr. Justin Sun threatening to reveal all the correspondences between him and a supposed president of Nigeria if his demands were not met.

In the Tweet allegedly posted at 7.52pm on Saturday, April 14, 2018, Justin Sun, who resides in San Francisco, state of California, USA, asked to be paid $100,000 for him to shut up about how APC’s Twitter handle became his personal possession.

The trending tweet supposedly by Justin Sun reads: “If the president of Nigeria does not pay me $100K, I’ll post all the correspondence here, and the whole world will see it.”

According to information available on Mr Justin Sun’s verified Twitter handle, he is the founder of Tron Foundation and he is one of Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 entrepreneurs and the First Millennial Graduate of Hupan University Founded By Jack Ma of the Alibaba Group.

“Justin Sun graduated from Hupan University as the program’s first millennial graduate. Sun received his diploma from Principal Jack Ma and updated him on the latest developments at #TRON. Sun also expressed his gratitude towards Principal Jack Ma for his unwavering support. #TRX,” another information on Justin Sun’s Twitter handle read.

Suffice to say, a perusal of Mr. Justin Sun’s official Twitter handle showed that his last post was seven hours ago, and he seemed to be unaware of the controversies surrounding his Twitter handle.

Meanwhile, the @APCNigeria Twitter handle has undergone several metamorphic processes since it was taken over, whether hacked or sold.

  • ‘Nigeria’s ruling party, APC’s Twitter is either sold or hacked’

The internet was abuzz on Saturday over the news that The All Progressives Congress (APC) Twitter account, @apcnigeria has been taken over by hackers.

Recall that the ruling APC campaigned, won the 2015 presidential election and communicated with over 700,000 Nigerians via this same handle.

According to a tweet from the hacker, the account was reportedly sold for ‘$2k’.

The hacker also went ahead to post tweets relating to the sale and purchase of bitcoins.

The account shared tweets around 3 PM promising to give followers 1,000 Bitcoin and 5,000 Ethereum.

The Twitter handle, @APCNigeria which was however taken over today by an alleged hacker was immediately disowned by the party’s spokeman.

Reacting to the takeover, the party’s spokesman,Bolaji Abdullahi wrote on his official page, “For the upteenth time, IS NOT the official Twitter handle of the All Progressives Congress (APC). In several official statements, we have disclaimed that handle. We view this latest development as a case of criminal impersonation.”

Notwithstanding, in a phone conversation with TheNewsGuru.com, the manager of the APC twitter handle, Phillip Obin, confirmed the account was hacked and not sold.

“The account was hacked, but I am currently engaging Twitter to help restore it…we have gotten an assurance that the challenge will be sorted out soonest” Obin said.

Obin is an All Progressives Congress (APC) member, and the party’s chairmanship candidate, Biase LGA in Cross River state.

  • Twitter’s CEO battles President Trump over YouTube HQ shooting

Twitter’s CEO battles President Trump over YouTube HQ shooting

After shooting at YouTube headquarters left a man and two women injured with gunshot wounds, Twitter’s founder and chief executive officer Jack Dorsey has called out on President Donald Trump to other than praying, evolve policies to address incessant shootings in the United States.

Chaos erupted at the Google-owned video sharing platform offices in California on Tuesday when Nasim Aghdam, 39, opened fire on the unsuspecting victims, and killing herself in the process.

TheNewsGuru reports Police have since opened investigations into the motive behind the incident with several reports indicating Aghdam was angered her videos were not getting expected number of views due to YouTube’s filters.

After the White House confirmed monitoring the situation, President Trump took to his Twitter handle to express his “thoughts and prayers are with everybody involved”.

“Was just briefed on the shooting at YouTube’s HQ in San Bruno, California. Our thoughts and prayers are with everybody involved. Thank you to our phenomenal Law Enforcement Officers and First Responders that are currently on the scene,” he tweeted.

Not before long, Jack responded to the tweet, retweeting it and saying: “We can’t keep being reactive to this, thinking and praying it won’t happen again at our schools, jobs, or our community spots. It’s beyond time to evolve our policies. This is a simple and reasonable approach, and it won’t solve all, but it’s a good start:” while adding a url to March for Our Lives.

The Police in San Bruno, California, say there is no evidence yet that the attacker knew the victims, a 36-year-old man said to be in a critical condition, and two women aged 32 and 27.

    The suspect: Nasim Aghdam

Nasim Aghdam lived in San Diego in southern California.

Police have revealed few details about her but US media said she ran a number of channels and a website, posting videos on a variety of subjects including those highlighting animal cruelty. The channels have now been deleted.

Aghdam has been variously described as a vegan bodybuilder, artist and rapper.

In January 2017 she posted a video complaining that YouTube was filtering her content, leading to fewer views.

On her website she also ranted against YouTube, saying: “Videos of targeted users are filtered and merely relegated, so that people can hardly see their videos.”

She also quotes Adolf Hitler, saying: “Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it.”

She also wrote: “There is no equal growth opportunity on YouTube or any other video sharing site. Your channel will grow if they want [it] to!”

Aghdam’s father, Ismail, told local US media she was angry because YouTube had stopped paying her for videos.

Video posters can receive money from linked advertisements but the company can “de-monetise” channels for various reasons, taking adverts off. It is unclear if this happened with Aghdam’s material.

Her father said Aghdam had been reported missing on Monday after not answering calls for two days. Police later found her sleeping in her car in Mountain View, 25km (15 miles) south of the YouTube offices in San Bruno and reported this to her family, but they did not detain her.

Her father told police she might go to YouTube as she “hated the company”, local media said.

YouTube terminated her account following the shooting. Her Instagram and Facebook accounts have also been removed.

However, many Twitter users posted her Facebook video rant against YouTube:

    What happened in the attack

The suspect is reported to have approached an outdoor patio and dining area at the offices in San Bruno, near San Francisco, at about lunchtime on Tuesday and opened fire with a handgun.

San Bruno Police Chief Ed Barberini said officers arrived at the offices at 12:48 (19:48 GMT) local time to find a “chaotic scene”, with numerous people fleeing.

Images broadcast on local TV stations showed employees leaving with their hands raised. Other footage showed evacuees forming a queue before being individually frisked by police.

Police said officers had “encountered one victim with an apparent gunshot wound at the site and two additional gunshot victims that had fled to a neighbouring business”.

Inside the complex, officers then found a woman dead from a gunshot wound that was believed to be self-inflicted.

An employee at a nearby fast food restaurant told Fox station KTVU he had treated a young woman who suffered a bullet wound to the leg.

He said he had fashioned a makeshift tourniquet from a bungee cord as they waited for first responders.

Several YouTube employees tweeted about the attack as it was taking place.

Product manager Todd Sherman said people fled the building in panic as the shooting unfolded.

    https://twitter.com/tdd/status/981262640830754817

Another employee, Vadim Lavrusik, tweeted he was barricaded in a room with other staff. He later said he had been evacuated.

The three wounded were taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Officials said the 32-year-old woman’s condition was serious and the 27-year-old’s condition was fair.

A fourth person was also taken to hospital with an ankle injury sustained while trying to escape, Mr Barberini said.

Some 1,700 people work at the YouTube HQ. The company is owned by Google and is the area’s biggest employer.

There had been earlier media reports that the man shot was Aghdam’s boyfriend, but police later said; “At this time there is no evidence that the shooter knew the victims of this shooting or that individuals were specifically targeted.”

Such “active shooter” incidents are overwhelmingly carried out by men – an FBI report found that out of 160 incidents between 2000-2013, only six of the people who opened fire were women.
