  • Twitter Dashboard for businesses to shut down February 3

ImageFile: Twitter Dashboard for businesses to shut down February 3Twitter is shutting down its Dashboard feature that offers businesses a set of tools to track tweets, access analytics and more.

Launched in June 2016, Dashboard will be completely shut down on February 3, 2017. However, Twitter has no transition plan for how businesses will access similar features going forward.

“Twitter Dashboard will be closing down on February 3rd. In the future, we hope to bring the best features from Dashboard to the broader Twitter community,” Twitter Dashboard wrote in a series of tweets on Wednesday.

According to a report in TechCrunch, the product may not have had a large install base, though, which is why it was marked for shutdown.

“Twitter Dashboard was ranked a lowly number 432 in the ‘Business’ apps category on iTunes. The Sensor Tower says the app was downloaded around 40,000 times worldwide since its launch, and about 3,000 times in the past month,” the report noted.

Twitter closed down Vine in October 2016 and said it would only maintain a simple camera app in its place.

  • Facebook acknowledges, fixes apps battery draining issue

ImageFile: Facebook acknowledges, fixes apps battery draining issueFacebook has acknowledged that it’s main and messenger apps drain battery unusually on both iOS and Android devices, and had said the issue has been fixed.

David Marcus, Head of Messenger at Facebook, replying to a Twitter user’s query claimed that the “issue was isolated and fixed server side,” adding that users experiencing battery drain issue can restart the respective apps and the issue is solved.

“If you restart Messenger the problem should be gone now,” Marcus said with a tweet.

Some of the users of the Facebook and Facebook Messenger apps on Twitter claimed that the Facebook app consumed over 1 percent battery every minute when it was in use. Users also lodged complaints that the Facebook Messenger app consumes battery juice abnormally.

One user, whose tweet is captured below, particularly tweeted @davidmarcus lodging his own complaint.

While it is not clear whether the issue has been fixed or not but some Twitter users complaining about the battery drain issue did confirm that the restart fixed the issue.

One of the users shared screenshot from battery setting showing that Facebook and Messenger apps were not draining the smartphone battery.

If you are experiencing battery drain then you can restart the Messenger or Facebook apps to see if the issue has been fixed.

Facebook last month revamped its Messenger app’s design with more camera-focused and new features like 3D masks and text-based artwork suggestions. The company later also added the group video calls feature to the Messenger app.

  • Vine to transform into Vine Camera App

Twitter announced in October that it would be shutting down its Vine app for good. Soon after, reports of a sale also started to fly around. However, Twitter later clarified the situation and announced that it will convert the Vine app into a pared-down camera app, called Vine Camera. Now, the company has confirmed, that the Vine app will shut down on January 17, transforming itself into Vine Camera.

On the specified date, the Vine app will transform itself into Vine Camera. The Vine Camera will make 6.5 second looping videos and post them to Twitter, or save them to your camera roll. Apart from that, you will not be able to do anything else. You won’t be able to download Vines, nor will you be able to share it to Vine Community. The community, Vine confirms, will be shuttered down.

On its FAQ page, it explains that all the old Vines will be archived for leisure scrolling. “In January, we will transition the website to an archive of Vines that were created through the Vine app, so you can continue to browse Vines,” the company notes.

If you are a regular Vine user and want to download your Vines before it disappears from the app, its best you download them before January 17. Folks at Vine have been kind enough to explain the process on the FAQ page, and you can refer to it if the need be.

Just as a small tribute to Vine creators, the company has announced that once the app shuts down, all videos shared on Twitter that are less than 6.5 seconds will loop automatically.

    Donald Trump, US President-elect.

US President-elect Donald Trump believes the only way to guarantee that a message is safe from prying eyes in the computer age is to write on paper and deliver by courier, stressing that no computer is safe.

“It’s very important. If you have something really important, write it out and have it delivered by courier, the old-fashioned way. Because I’ll tell you what, no computer is safe. I don’t care what they say – no computer is safe,” the Twitter-loving president-elect told reporters over the holiday weekend.

The comments came after the president-elect whose inauguration is later this month was asked about charges by President Barrack Obama administration and the US intelligence community that Russia was behind the cyberattacks on the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

Trump dismissed the notion that the Kremlin meddled in the presidential election to help him win.

Trump also touted the computer skills of his son Barron.

“I have a boy who’s 10 years old. He can do anything with a computer,” Trump said, accentuating that “You want something to really go without detection, write it out and have it sent by courier”.

Meanwhile, incoming White House spokesman, Sean Spicer, has said Trump will continue to tweet directly to the public as president, bypassing much of the media.

“I think it freaks the mainstream media out that he has this following of over 45-plus million people that follow him on social media, that he can have a direct conversation. He doesn’t have to have it funnelled through the media,” Spicer said.

“Business as usual is over, as I’ve said before. There’s a new sheriff in town, and he’s going to do things first and foremost for the American people,” he added.

But he also promised that the media would have access to President Trump.

“Absolutely, we understand the importance” of press briefings, he said, adding that “We’ll use every tool possible. And absolutely, we’ll sit down and make sure that on a daily basis the press is informed”.

Spicer also said the Obama administration may have gone too far in sanctions on Russia.

“One of the questions that we have is why the magnitude of this? I mean, you look at 35 people being expelled, two sites being closed down, the question is: Is that response in proportion to the actions taken? Maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t, but you have to think about that,” Spicer said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week”.

  • Twitter launches ‘Live Video’ with Periscope integration in-app

Twitter has launched the ability to create live videos via its Android and iOS apps with the help of Periscope. Just like Facebook, Twitter will also allow users to live stream video through the platform via a single tweet.

The latest updates of Android and iOS bring this feature to Twitter, and it is already accessible in some countries.

For this to work, the user must have Periscope installed on their smartphone. By clicking on the Tweet button, the user will now see three new options for adding media content via the camera. By pressing the Camera button, you now get the option to add photo, video, and start a live video.

At this point, if you haven’t downloaded Periscope, Twitter will prompt you to do so. After signing up on Periscope, head back to Twitter to use the ‘Live Video’ feature.

Once you click on Live Video, you are directed to Periscope to start the live video, but it is also live streamed simultaneously on Twitter as well. The tweet reads by default ‘live on #Periscope’, and all the users on your timeline can watch it.

You can stop the broadcast and even save the video on to your phone if you prefer.

“We started Periscope because we wanted to give people the superpower to share live video with an audience. Bringing this capability directly into the Twitter app is an important step because it brings that superpower to the hundreds of millions of people who use Twitter. “Twitter, already the place where people go to see what’s happening, with this update, anyone can now broadcast what’s happening live,” said Kayvon Beykpour, CEO of Periscope in a statement.

Facebook was the first social giant to introduce the live video feature on its app, and Twitter has followed suit. It remains to be seen whether users will adopt this feature as wholeheartedly as they did on Facebook.
