World’s richest man Elon Musk set to acquire Twitter

World’s richest man Elon Musk has tabled a bid to acquire social app Twitter.

Presently about 217 millon active users are on the App and it offers a platform where celebrities, politicians, technicians connect and air their views.

The bid came just weeks after Mr. Musk became the company’s largest shareholder (though his holdings appear to have been eclipsed since then by the investment management giant Vanguard). He offered $54.20 a share, valuing the company at roughly $43 billion.

Mr. Musk, a Twitter power user with nearly 82 million followers, has long argued for the need for unfettered public speech. He has repeatedly criticized Twitter for moderating its platform too restrictively, and he previously floated the notion of radically shifting the power in social networking to users and away from behemoth companies

“I invested in Twitter as I believe in its potential to be the platform for free speech around the globe,” Mr. Musk said in a letter sent to Bret Taylor, the chair of Twitter’s board, on Wednesday. “I believe free speech is a societal imperative for a functioning democracy.”

“Having a public platform that is maximally trusted and broadly inclusive is extremely important to the future of civilization,” he said Thursday. “I don’t care about the economics at all.”

Born in Pretoria, on June 28, 1971, the son of an engineer father and a Canadian-born model mother, Musk left South Africa in his late teens to attend Queen’s University in Ontario.

He transferred to the University of Pennsylvania after two years and earned bachelor’s degrees in physics and business

UKRAINE INVASION: Facebook, Twitter, others blocked in Russia

Multiple RFE/RL websites, Russian sites of the BBC and Deutsche Welle, alongside Facebook, Twitter, Apple and Google’s app stores have been blocked in Russia to prevent Russian-speakers from getting access to outside information amid the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

According to web monitor group GlobalCheck and other indicators, the websites were blocked overnight on March 3-4.

It was unclear why the social media sites and app stores were targeted, although Moscow has had long-running disputes with many tech providers and platforms over disclosure and user-data issues.

The blocks began overnight on March 3-4 and follow a week of threats to RFE/RL and other media and forced closures amid ongoing coverage since President Vladimir Putin ordered Russia’s full-scale invasion of its post-Soviet neighbor.

Some of the sites sites were still available to Rostelecom subscribers, GlobalCheck said.

The blocks are preventing Russian access to the Russian Service of RFE/RL.

Journalists at the Latvian-based Russian- and English-language news outlet Meduza also said “everything looks like Meduza’s site is blocked in Russia,” adding, “These times will pass. We continue our work.”

The editorial offices of RFE/RL’s Russian Service received six notifications from Roskomnadzor late on March 2 in which the Russian media-monitoring agency threatened to block the service’s website amid ongoing coverage of the conflict in Ukraine.

The service reported that Roskomnadzor said it would use its powers to block news on Svoboda.org about the shelling of Kharkiv, in Ukraine, as well as the hacking of some Russian websites by cyberactors sympathetic to Ukraine and material about social media reactions to the hostilities.

The media regulator said the materials “delivered deliberately false socially significant information about Russia’s alleged attack on the territory of Ukraine” in ways that could “create panic among people.”

The U.S. State Department this week accused Moscow of mounting “a full assault on media freedom and the truth” as officials there seek to “mislead and suppress” information about the war.

  • John Terry criticised for hailing Abramovich on Twitter

John Terry criticised for hailing Abramovich on Twitter

Labour MP, Chris Bryant, has urged former Chelsea captain, John Terry to immediately delete his post on Twitter about Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich.

Bryant branded Terry’s message to Abramovich as ‘appalling’, insisting that the former England international was celebrating the Russian billionaire while Ukraine is being bombed.

He said this after Terry paid tribute to Abramovich on Twitter on Thursday.

Abramovich had confirmed on Wednesday that he is selling Chelsea, claiming that the decision ‘is in the best interest of the club.’

Terry was Chelsea’s captain for the majority of Abramovich’s time at Stamford Bridge and following the 55-year-old’s announcement, the former defender posted a photo of them together with the Premier League trophy along with the caption: ‘The best.’

In response to Terry’s message, Bryant urged the former footballer to delete the post ‘ASAP’.

    Bryant tweeted: “This is appalling.

“I think @JohnTerry26 you should take this down ASAP. The people of Ukraine are being bombed, shelled and murdered while you celebrate Abramovich.”

  • What we agreed with Twitter to operate in Nigeria – FG

What we agreed with Twitter to operate in Nigeria – FG

The Federal Government says the agreements it reached with Twitter to resume operations in the country were not meant to censor the microblogging site and other social media platforms in general.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who stated this on Saturday, added that the agreement, to be extended to other social media platforms operating in the country, would ensure that only wholesome content were published by the platforms.

The Minister was speaking on “Radio Link’’, a phone-in programme of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria.

He reiterated the resolve of the government to regulate the social media in a manner that would not stifle the freedom of speech and expression, as well as strangulate the media.

“We are going to regulate the social media not because we want to stifle the media or we want to violate the right of expression.

“We want to ensure that only wholesome contents were available on the social media.

“Recently we were all shocked when an 18-year old boy, accused of killing his 21-year old girlfriend for money rituals, confessed that he leant the diabolical act on social media.

“The teenager, in collaboration with his friends, cut off the head of the victim and were burning it in a pot when they were apprehended.

“The government has the responsibility to ensure that social media platforms were responsible and the contents they displayed were not harmful to young people, as well as the unity of the country,’’ he said.

On the other agreements reached with Twitter, which the minister said would be applicable to other online platforms, the micro blogging site had agreed to open its Nigeria office within the first quarter of the 2022.

He said Twitter agreed to appoint a designated country representative within one month of lifting its suspension, while its global policy team will also be available to engage directly with the government

The minister said Twitter agreed to meet all regulatory demands, including the Companies and Allied Matters Act, Nigeria Communication Commission laws and rules and the National Broadcasting Commission Code.

“Twitter also agreed to comply with all payable taxes, as they were operating under Nigerian laws and this they agreed to do within one week of restoring their operations.

“Twitter agreed to immediately work with the federal government in the area of code of conduct, that were in line with global best practices

Twitter agreed to immediately enrol Nigerians in its Law Enforcement portals and Partners Support Portal”.

“The law enforcement portal will provide dedicated channels for the Nigerian law enforcement agencies to escalate reports on contents that violate the code of conduct or national laws.

“Similarly, the partner support portal provides a direct channel for government to engage Twitter staff to manage prohibited contents,” he said.

He reiterated that relevant laws and the broadcasting code would be amended to ensure that the agreement reached with Twitter would be applicable to other social media platforms.
