Davido disburses N250m to 292 orphanages

Nigeria’s music superstar, David Adeleke, a.k.a Davido, has fulfilled his promise by disbursing N250 million gift money to selected orphanages across the country.

The singer stated this in a statement released through his official Twitter account on Tuesday night

Davido gave the update and names of the orphanages that benefitted from his gesture.

“I am pleased to announce that the disbursement is complete and so far, total of N250,000,000 has been disbursed to 292 orphanages.

“In the spirit of transparency I thought it wise to give to you my loyal supporters, fans friends and family an update in this regard,” he tweeted.

Davido thanked the committee he set up to actualize the project for a job well done, saying it is a “committee of high calibre and principled people” who dedicated their time to ensure the job was done.

Commending his fans, family and friends, Davido said we rise by lifting others.

Recall that in November 2021, the singer asked his friends to gift him N1 million each ahead of his birthday.

He was gifted N200 million in less than 48 hours and Davido in turn decided to donate the money to orphanages across the country.

Davido added N50 million from his personal purse to make it N250 million.

  • Canada protest: FG accuses Twitter of double standards

Canada protest: FG accuses Twitter of double standards

The Federal Government has accused the Canadian government and Twitter of double standards in the way they classify violent protesters in Nigeria and in Western clime.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed made the accusation at a media briefing on Sunday in his hometown, Oro, in Kwara state.

The minister was reacting to the unfolding events in Canada, where truckers were protesting over COVID-19 vaccine mandates and other COVID-19 restrictions.

Mohammed said Canada and Twitter which had called the hoodlums who destroyed public and private property in Nigeria during the EndSARS as “peaceful protesters” turned around to tag similar protesters in their own countries as insurrectionists and terrorists.
“The Canadian protesters, who have blockaded roads and resorted to inconveniencing others, have been branded as terrorists or insurrectionists and subjected to a number of clampdown by government and private organisations.
“The crowdfunding company GoFundMe has shut down the campaign to raise funds for the truckers, after they raised more than 10 million U.S. dollars.

“Twitter has suspended the truckers account while the Ontario government has frozen access to millions of dollars donated through online fundraising platform GiveSendGo to the protesters.

“”Jim Watson, the Mayor of Ottawa, Canada’s capital city, has also declared a state of emergency in the city in response, saying the protests posed a threat to residents’ safety.

Recall, gentlemen, that during the EndSars protest, which culminated in the blockade of public roads and massive destruction of government and private property, Canada was one of the countries that spoke out in support of the protesters.

“Recall also that Twitter actively supported the EndSars protesters and even helped them to raise fund while GoFundMe was used to raise funds for the protests.

“These are the same entities that are now rushing to distance themselves from the protesters in Canada and even denying them the use of their platforms,” he said.

The minister recalled that similar scenario
played out during the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection at the U. S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. where those involved were either still being investigated or had been charged to court.

Mohammed, therefore, called on Nigerians to be circumspect of the glaring double standard and should be ready at all time to protect their country from destruction.

He said Nigerians must put their country first at all times and should not allow anyone to destroy their country under the guise of protest or unbridled freedoms.
“This realisation explains why every country goes the extra mile to protect and preserve itself.
“We have always said that you must have a country before you can even enjoy the freedoms guaranteed by your country’s constitution.

“If there is no Nigeria, no one will be talking of freedom of expression or freedom of association and the likes,” he said.
The minister noted that the Federal Government’s position should not be misunderstood to be gloating over the unfortunate development in Canada
He said they were only calling attention to the double standard involved in the way protesters deemed to be violent were being perceived in Nigeria and in the West.

The minister reiterated the position that the government never regretted the action it took against Twitter and the outcome of the subsequent negotiation with the micro blogging site.
“In this area, I can confidently say we are far ahead of most countries in the world, who have now realised that social media must be regulated in the interest of their own people”.

Mohammed said the successful negotiation with Twitter on measures to ensure a responsible use of the platform had placed Nigeria as a global trail blazer in efforts to prevent harmful content from social media platforms.
He reassured that the conditions and measures agreed upon for lifting the ban on Twitter would also be applied to other social media platforms operating in the country.

  • 19-year-old demands N20 million from Elon Musk to delete Twitter account

19-year-old demands N20 million from Elon Musk to delete Twitter account

A 19-year-old has demanded the sum of $50,000, about 20 million in Naira, from the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tesla Motors, Elon Musk, for him to delete a Twitter account that monitors the billionaire’s private jet.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Elon Musk had offered to pay the 19-year-old the sum of $5,000, about 2 million in Naira, for him to delete the account, as per report by Protocol.

However, 19-year-old Jack Sweeney offered the counter amount of $50,000 in back and forth conversation they had, a proposition the billionaire was yet to respond to.

According to the report, 19-year-old Jack Sweeney owns the Twitter account, Elon Musk’s Jet, and uses it to show real-time movements of Musk’s private jet, using bots that monitor publicly available air-traffic data.

    Read their conversation below:

Elon Musk: “Can you take this down? It is a security risk.”

Jack Sweeney: “Yes I can but it’ll cost you a Model 3 only joking unless?”

Elon Musk: “I don’t love the idea of being shot by a nutcase. $5,000 to delete the account.

Jack Sweeney: “I’ve put a lot of work into it, and $5k is just really not enough. Any chance to up that to $50k? It would be great support in college and would possibly allow me to get a car maybe even a Model 3.”

After Jack Sweeney upped the ante, Elon Musk was yet to reach back to him, and as per the report, the billionaire was yet to pay the 19-year-old any dime, and the account, @ElonJet is still running.

TNG reports the conversation happened in 2021, and Elon Musk tweeted earlier this month that social-media accounts tracking his movements are “becoming a security issue”.

However, the Twitter account has not led to any dangerous incident so far, at least according to Jack Sweeney’s knowledge and information available online.

  • FG moves to apply twitter operational conditions to other platforms

FG moves to apply twitter operational conditions to other platforms

The Federal Government says it is set to amend its relevant statutes and code to enforce the operational conditions of Twitter in Nigeria on other social media platforms.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed disclosed this in Cairo at a meeting with his counterpart, Egypt Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Dr Amir Talaat.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was on the sidelines of a bilateral discussion with Africa Export Import Bank (Afreximbank) on how Nigeria can access funding to support its growing creative industry.

NAN reports that Mohammed had led some private sector stakeholders involved in Digital Switch Over (DSO), to Afreximbank to assist them on how they can source fund to complete the wholly private sector financially driven project.

In his interaction with Talaat, the minister disclosed that Nigeria was amending its National Broadcasting Act and Broadcasting Code to ensure that all online platforms operating in the country must comply with stipulated conditions.

Mohammed said the decision was borne out of the recent development on suspension of Twitter operations in the country and the agreement reached before the suspension was lifted.

“The beauty of the engagement with Twitter is immense.

“Whatever applies to twitter will apply to all other social media platforms, be it WhatsApp, Facebook or any other.

“That is why we will be having a retreat to amend the NBC Act and the NBC Code to incorporate these new gains we made with the engagement with twitter,’’ he said.

On the agreement reached with twitter which the minister said would be applicable to other online platforms, he said the micro blogging site had agreed to open the Nigerian office within the first quarter of 2022.

He said twitter agreed to appoint a designated country representative within one month of lifting its suspension while its global policy team would also be available to engage directly with the government

The minister said twitter agreed to meet all regulatory demands, including Companies and Allied Matters Act, Nigeria Communication Commission laws and rules and National Broadcasting Commission Code.

“Twitter has agreed to comply to all payable taxes as they are operating under the Nigerian laws and this they agreed to do within one week of restoring their operations.

“Twitter agreed to immediately work with the Federal Government in the area of code of conduct which is in line with global best practices

“Twitter agreed to immediately enroll Nigerians in its Law Enforcement portals and Partners Support Portal.

“The law enforcement portal will provide dedicated channels for the Nigerian laws enforcement agencies to escalate reports on contents that violate the code of conduct or the national laws.

“Similarly, the partner support portal provides a direct channel for government to engage twitter staff to manage prohibited contents,’’ he said.

The minister explained to his counterpart that twitter operation was not suspended in Nigerian because they wrote something about president as being carried about in certain quarters.

He said the operation was suspended because twitter had become the platform of choice for those who wanted to destabilise Nigeria and create disunity and heat up the polity.

“We met with a barrage of knocks, we were accused of running authoritarian government, trying to infringe on freedom of press, violating the constitution but we were sure in our mind of what we were doing.

“We were glad that after seven months of serious engagement with twitter, we can say that what we achieved is what the suspension of the operations of twitter was all about,” he said.

Also speaking, the Egyptian minister said his country had similar challenges in the area of dissemination of policies and programmes of government.

He said he was a recent victim of fake news report which was very devastating to him.

To combat the menace, he said a department was established in the office of the Prime Minister where they monitor on hourly basis what kind of fake news was being cooked up.

He said government would immediately react to such news by giving the truthful perspective to the issue.

Twitter suspends over 450k accounts for child sexual exploitation

Microblogging social media platform, Twitter has said it suspended over 450,000 accounts for violating it’s child sexual exploitation rules.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Twitter as saying it also suspended a total number of 44,974 accounts for promoting terrorism on the platform.

The microblogging platform revealed this on Tuesday in a report, which also revealed that in the six month period covered by the report, the microblogging platform received 43,387 legal demands to remove content.

Twitter stated that the demands to remove content specified 196,878 accounts and that account holders were asked to remove 4.7 million Tweets that violated the Twitter Rules.

The report reads in part: “In terms of legal demands from governments, in the six month period covered in this report, Twitter received 43,387 legal demands to remove content, specifying 196,878 accounts.

“This is the largest number of accounts ever subject to removal requests in a reporting period since releasing our first transparency report in 2012.

“Of the total global volume of legal demands, 95% originated from only five countries (in decreasing order): Japan, Russia, Turkey, India, and South Korea.

“We withheld or required account holders to remove some or all of the reported content in response to 54% of these global legal demands.

“Twitter required account holders to remove 4.7M Tweets that violated the Twitter Rules. Of the Tweets removed, 68% received fewer than 100 impressions prior to removal, with an additional 24% receiving between 100 and 1,000 impressions.

“In total, impressions on these violative Tweets accounted for less than 0.1% of all impressions for all Tweets during that time period.

“In these six months, Twitter permanently suspended 453,754 unique accounts for violations of our child sexual exploitation (CSE) policy — 89% of those accounts were proactively identified and removed by deploying a range of internal tools and/or by utilizing the industry hash sharing (e.g., PhotoDNA) prior to any reports filed via the designated CSE reporting channel.

“In Q1 2021, Twitter suspended 44,974 unique accounts for promotion of terrorism and violent organizations — 93% of those accounts were proactively identified and removed”.

Meanwhile, Twitter stated in the report that there was an overall downward trend in the number of violating accounts, which it said is likely due to changing behaviors of these actors coupled with continued improvements of its defenses.
