More trouble for El-Rufai as protesters storm Kaduna govt House, demand his arrest

A group under the auspices of Kaduna Citizens Watch for Good Governance (KCWGG), on Thursday, stormed Government House, Kaduna, to demand the arrest of immediate past governor of kaduna state, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.

They asked Governor Uba Sani to invite officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other relevant agencies to arrest and prosecute El-Rufai over his administration’s indictment to the tune of N423 billion.

The protesters sang solidarity songs just as they displayed placards with different inscriptions.

Some of the inscriptions read, ‘We will occupy all MDAs to chase out all indicted persons in the report’. ‘Stop servicing all loans that did not follow due process before they were obtained’.

On March 30th, 2024, Governor Uba Sani revealed during a town hall meeting that the state faced a substantial debt burden of $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual liabilities inherited from the previous administration.

This, he said, led to over 70% of the state’s allocation being used to service the inherited debt.

The committee, led by Barrister Henry Danjuma Magaji, submitted its findings on June 5th, 2024, revealing significant unaccounted funds and irregularities in financial transactions.

The report highlighted mismanagement of funds, diversion of loans, overpayment of contractors, and lack of transparency in the usage of state funds.

While addressing journalists shortly after arriving at Kaduna government house, Chairman of the protesting group, Comrade Victor Duniya said, “We, the Kaduna Citizens Watch for Good Governance appreciate your presence as we express our grievances today. Our state has endured financial mismanagement, abuse of power, and a growing debt burden for the past eight years.

“The most troubling finding was the diversion of 10.5 billion naira meant for pastoral nomadism and the construction of the Milk Industry at Damau, Kubau LGA, for the construction of Galaxy Mall, Kaduna. Additionally, the report uncovered overpayments to contractors, payments to unregistered companies, and funds disbursed for work not completed, amounting to over 36.3 billion.

“The report also revealed large sums of money withdrawn from the state treasury without proper documentation of its usage. Furthermore, an expenditure of over 11 billion on a non-existent MRT transportation scheme was documented with no evidence to support it.”

He then called on Governor Sani to implement relevant sections of the report that fall under his purview and officially forward the findings of the committee report to relevant anti-corruption agencies to enable them to swing into action and recover the state’s resources at their disposal.

2027: You’ll be voted out with Tinubu – Lukman criticizes Uba Sani for probing El-Rufai

Former North West National Vice President of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Salihu Lukman, has slammed Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, saying his days in office will soon be numbered as he would be ousted along with President Bola Tinubu. in 2027.

Lukman blamed Governor Sani for waging a war against his predecessor, Nasir El-Rufai, adding that he was waging a proxy war for the presidency.

He warned the governor that the campaign to defeat the APC and President Tinubu has just begun and will take root in Kaduna State.

In a letter titled “Policy and Governance Issues in Kaduna: The Truth”, dated June 13, 2024 and copied to Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, Ramalan Yero, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Mal. Bachelor of Laws, Hon. Garba Datti, Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, Alh. Yusuf Mairago, Alh. Lawal Samaila Yakawad, Alh. Bashir Abubakar Alhaji and Mal. Mohammed Sani Dattijo, Lukman, said Governor Uba Sani was setting a precedent that would eventually harm him.

He said; “Honestly, I’m worried about you. You are setting a precedent that will hurt you. All I can say is be careful. Maximum, in the next 7 years you will be out. You must admit that without Mallam, it would have been almost impossible for you to get to where you are today.

”’The privilege of being Governor has an expiration date. In your case, if you’re lucky, another seven years. But the way things are developing, I think the default expiration date for his term is another three years. Both you and President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu have sent worrying signals that you are anything but democrats.

“Unfortunately, both President Asiwaju Tinubu and you have distanced yourself and are behaving like autocrats and if left unchecked, whatever has been achieved under this democracy in the last 25 years will be destroyed. When he invited a few of us to a meeting about two months ago, he hoped he had created the identifier to help correct that. Unfortunately, he was reduced to a photo opportunity and the next thing I heard was that there were people among the group members who were threatened by the presence of some people and had exploited their closeness to you to demobilize the group.

“Consequently, from a situation in which the group had to meet again after two weeks, no meeting has been contemplated for more than months. This is consistent with APC tradition. APC is practically the only political party in the world that exists without holding meetings and the leaders are comfortable with that. This is certainly not the democracy we fight for. Although he claimed to be among those who fought for democracy, I am not sure from the way he is handling things that he can justify his contributions to the fight for democracy in Nigeria.

“Mallam Uba, like I said, I speak to you like an elder brother. The way I have been treated over the last year has pushed me to review whether I want to continue living with the frustration of watching our hard-earned work go down the drain. I lived my entire life campaigning for a better society. I am determined that our current reality does not project the type of society we want.

“Therefore, I have decided to return to the trenches and resume mobilization for change. Unless APC and you, our leaders, accept change and return to some level of sanity, this will require us to mobilize and remove you from power in 2027 at all levels.

“I wish I could do without you. But since politics is ultimately local, even if you agree to reforms but President Asiwaju Tinubu did not accept them, you will suffer collateral damage. Believe me, the campaign to defeat the APC and President Asiwaju Tinubu is just beginning and will take root in Kaduna State!

Democracy Day: Uba Sani frees 110 Kaduna inmates

“This is more worrisome to me considering the capacity of our custodial centres in Kaduna State. The initial capacity was 500 but upgraded now to 1,100. The custodial centers have been over-stretched. We now have a total number of 3,000 inmates.

“I came to this Custodial Center today with mixed feelings. We are celebrating our Democracy Day; a day set aside to pay tribute to those who made sacrifices so that we can live in freedom. I am also here to see our brothers and sisters who found themselves on the wrong side of the law,”

“Our administration is anchored on Justice and Fairness. We are committed to bringing succour to the poor, vulnerable and underserved in Kaduna State. We have zero tolerance for discrimination.

“We strongly believe that there is inherent goodness in every person. We believe that everybody deserves a second chance. Persons in custodial centers can turn a new leaf and contribute to the growth and development of our state.”

He said Correctional Service has been removed from the exclusive list to concurrent list andvurged Governors to invest in the upgrade of facilities in the correctional centres in Nigeria.

The Senior Advocate commended Governor Uba Sani for his gesture by granting pardon to 22 convicted inmates and securing release of 88 awaiting trial inmates, he further advised the released inmates to stay away from crimes capable of bringing them back to the prison.

The Controller of Correctional Service in Kaduna, Isah Mohammed Nuru said the Custodial Centre in Kaduna and its environ are facing challenges ranging from high number of Awaiting Trial Inmates, Operational Vehicles to convey inmates to courts, as those in use are inadequate.

“We also have the need for 18-seater bus which can be used in carrying special class of inmates to Courts. Sir, there are also some basic needs that will help in smooth running of the Centre such as: Solar light which will assists in lighting the Centre in the night when light goes off. We also need Solar Bore Hole to assist in Shortage of water in the Centre.”

How Uba Sani won at Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Friday affirmed the election of Gov. Uba Sani of Kaduna State.

Delivering judgement, Justice Tijjani Abubakar, dismissed the appeal against the governor by the PDP and it’s candidate, Ashiru Isa.

The court of appeal in Abuja had on Nov.  24 last year in a unanimous judgement affirmed the election of Uba Sani as Kaduna state governor.

The PDP and Ashiru had challenged the outcome of the governorship election held in the state on March 18.

They alleged that Uba was not duly elected by a majority of valid votes cast in the election, adding that the election was invalid by reason of corrupt practices and non-compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.

They further alleged that some polling unit results were wrongfully cancelled, insisting that there were inconsistencies in accreditation records from INEC.

However, in a judgement delivered on September 28, two of the three judges on the Tribunal dismissed the petition on technical grounds.

Victor Oviawie, who led the panel said that the petition was deemed abandoned because PDP and its candidate did not file their pre-hearing application within the time prescribed by law.
