We’re disappointed, sad – Inter’s coach reacts after losing UCL final to PSG

Ligue 1 side, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), defeated Italian Serie A side, Inter Milan, on Saturday to win the 2024-2025 UEFA Champions League (UCL).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports PSG beat Inter Milan 5-0 in what is a record in the Champions League final to be crowned kings of European football in Munich.

It would be the first time PSG has ever won the Champions League and the largest-ever goal margin in a Champions League final.

Achraf Hakimi opened the scoring, Desire Doue scored twice, and both Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Senny Mayulu also scored to hand PSG the 2024-2025 UCL trophy

Speaking after the final, Inter’s coach, Simone Inzaghi, congratulated PSG, expressed sadness and disappointment, but said he is, nevertheless, proud of his players.

“Paris deserved to win this game and the trophy. We’re disappointed, but the path to this point was great. As coach, I am proud of my players. The game, of course, wasn’t good enough on our part.

“I thanked my players for what they did this season. We didn’t win a trophy, but I am proud to be their coach. We need to learn from defeats and come out stronger.

“This hurts like the Istanbul final [in 2023]. It was a different game, of course. Paris were constantly first on the ball. We needed to do much better.

“We gave everything we had to get to this point, playing 58 games this season. We’re disappointed, sad. The players gave their all,” Inzaghi said.

PSG’s coach, Luis Enrique, who won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2015, has become only the seventh coach to win the competition with two different teams.

Other coaches who have won the UCL with two different teams are Ernst Happel, Ottmar Hitzfeld, Jupp Heynckes, Carlo Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola.

Enrique also won the treble this season for the second time – with PSG’s Champions League being added to Ligue 1 and the French Cup – after he achieved the same feat with Barcelona 10 years ago.

“Inter are a great side, but we were fantastic in our pressing. Every player improved this season, and so did the team.

“We prepared very well for this game to be at that level. The team was excellent; we pressed with high intensity.

“Since day one, I said I wanted to win important trophies and Paris had never won the Champions League. We did it for the first time. It’s a great feeling to make many people happy,” Enrique said.

TNG reports PSG will now play Europa League champions, Tottenham Hotspur, in the European Super Cup final on August 13 in Udine, Italy.

  • UCL: What Arteta, Arsenal learned from loss to PSG

UCL: What Arteta, Arsenal learned from loss to PSG

Arsenal were beaten 1-0 by Paris St-Germain in the Champions League semi-final first leg at Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta’s side had good chances through Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard but could not find a goal to level the match.

Here, we look at what was learned from the match.

    Arsenal miss Partey

The biggest challenge for Arteta coming into this match was how he was going to set up in the absence of suspended midfielder Thomas Partey.

The 31-year-old is a key part of the Gunners midfield and picked up a cheap yellow card in the final few minutes of the match with Real Madrid in the quarter-final which meant he missed this game.

With the injuries Arsenal have and with Mikel Merino playing as a central striker in recent weeks, Partey’s absence caused Arteta to shuffle his team around.

Merino dropped into his natural midfield position, Declan Rice moved deeper to a number six role and away from the number eight role in which he produced two player-of-the-match performances against Real Madrid. Trossard came in as striker.

PSG were dominant from the start of the match and had 75% possession in the opening 15 minutes, taking the lead in the fourth minute with an Ousmane Dembele strike.

Dembele so often drifted into the space between Arsenal’s backline and their midfield, and PSG scored the opening goal when he made that movement.

The question Arteta will be asking is – if Partey had been in the team, would he have been able to stop Dembele receiving the ball before giving PSG the lead?

Partey has been in excellent form in recent weeks and will be crucial to the Gunners next week if they are to overturn the defeat and progress to the final.

Kvaratskhelia and Timber – a key battle

Paris St-Germain’s quality would not have come as a surprise to Arsenal or Arteta.

The French side have knocked out two Premier League sides in Aston Villa and Liverpool to reach this point and beat Manchester City in the league phase of the competition.

However, when Arsenal played and beat PSG in the group stage in October they did not have Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who signed for the club in January for a reported 70m euros (£59m) plus add-ons.

Jurrien Timber has arguably been Arsenal’s player of the season because of his consistency, quality going forward and his ability to play anywhere across the backline.

But the Netherlands international had a tricky first half up against the PSG left winger.

Kvaratskhelia got the assist for the goal, driving into the box and pulling the ball back for Dembele to guide into the net from the edge of the box.

The Georgian was direct every time he recieved the ball and Bukayo Saka came back to help Timber defend as Arsenal looked to double up on him.

Timber looked more comfortable in the second half when Arsenal were able to have more possession and he was able to get forward more himself.

But, it is the first time in a long time that an attacker has caused the Arsenal defender such problems.

‘If we don’t have the ball, we die’ – Rice

Those were the words of midfielder Rice in the Arsenal pre-match huddle that were picked up by the TV cameras.

The fear that Arsenal would not have the ball played out as the hosts failed to get control in the match, with the away side dominating the ball for large parts of the first half.

Arsenal did get a foothold in the game in the second period and PSG, despite their fast start, finished the match on 52% possession.

Mikel Arteta said that it is “impossible” to control PSG for 95 minutes and that it was the “small margins” in the game that did not allow his team to pick up a positive result.

“I mean, this is one of the best, beating all the English teams, the best teams in this country,” Arteta said.

“So, you cannot dominate this team in 95 minutes. Impossible. Forget about it.

“And you have to understand what it means dominating them and in which area of the pitch.”

    ‘The margins were small’

It’s only half-time in the tie and Arteta says his side will approach the second leg the same way they did when going to Madrid with a 3-0 lead in the last round.

“We have to go to Paris and win the game,” he added. “We are more than capable of doing it.

“I saw two very good teams, but the margins are so small. They had efficiency in front of the goal. The keeper as well made a difference to see the result that we’ve seen tonight.

“I don’t know the percentage, but we have a lot of chances to be in that final. You have to do something special in the competition to have the right to be in the final. And the time to do it is going to be in Paris.”

Luis Enrique expects PSG to ‘suffer’

Donnarumma may have made two smart saves to keep Arsenal out but PSG also had chances to put the tie beyond the Gunners.

First Bradley Barcola pulled an effort wide and then Goncalo Ramos hit the crossbar late on.

And PSG boss Luis Enrique expects his side to “suffer” in Paris without that cushion.

“I think emotions are at that level in those kind of matches so it’s difficult to analyse,” he said. “Great atmosphere but we showed the kind of team we are.

“We tried to play our way and scored the goal early playing the way we play. We suffered sometimes but could have scored the second goal. The second match is going to be very tough.

“We need to prepare for the second match, it’s going to be difficult. The result means a little advantage for us. We are going to suffer, we know that. I think we can go to the final but there is still one match.”

UCL: Real Madrid beat Atletico on penalties to reach last eight

Title holders Real Madrid survived a missed penalty from Vinicius Junior in regulation when they beat crosstown rivals Atletico Madrid 4-2 on penalties for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Antonio Rüdiger sealed the last 16 victory as goalkeeper Jan Oblak got his hands on the ball but couldn’t stop it from crossing the line.

Oblak had saved from Lucas Vazquez in the shoot-out but Atletico’s Julian Alvarez had his successful kick disallowed upon review because he touched the ball with both feet, and Marcos Llorente hit the crossbar with his attempt.

Record winners Real had won the first leg 2-1 at home but Conor Gallagher levelled it up for Atletico in the opening minute at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Vinicius Junior had the big chance to restore Real’s aggregate advantage but fired the penalty high over the crossbar in the 70th minute after Clement Lenglet had brought down Kylian Mbappe.

Real maintained their perfect record against Atletico in knock-out ties and finals in the event, and now meet Arsenal, who completed an emphatic 9-3 aggregate victory against PSV Eindhoven with a 2-2 home draw.

Last season’s runners-up Borussia Dortmund won 2-1 at French side Lille to advance 3-2 for a date with Barcelona.

Marco Asensio’s brace helped Aston Villa beat 10-man Club Brugge 3-0 on the night and 6-1 overall and into a quarter-final meeting with his parent club and Liverpool conquerors Paris Saint-Germain.

The other quarter-final tie is Bayern Munich v Inter Milan, with the matches set to be played April 8/9 and April 15/16.

Real Madrid edge past rivals Atletico in UCL

Brahim Diaz scored a brilliant winner to give Real Madrid a slender advantage over city rivals Atletico after the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Rodrygo put the hosts ahead inside four minutes in the Bernabeu when he sprinted past Javi Galan and chopped inside the box before bending a wonderful hit past Jan Oblak.

Atletico, though, quickly settled into the game and levelled in the 32nd minute with another wonderful goal.

The in-form Julian Alvarez picked up the ball on the left side of the box, wrongfooted Eduardo Camavinga and whipped a spectacular curling strike around Thibaut Courtois and in off the post.

It was the Argentine striker’s seventh goal in nine appearances in the competition this season.

But it was Diaz, another former Manchester City player, who claimed the decisive goal in an electric Madrid derby.

The Spaniard sent Atletico defender Jose Gimenez to the floor as he skilfully waltzed into the box before driving a low shot into the far corner in the 55th minute.

The 25-year-old midfielder had stepped up in Jude Bellingham’s absence, with the England international serving a one-game suspension after picking up his his third yellow card in the competition against Manchester City earlier this month.

Bellingham will be available for the defending European champions when they make the short trip to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano for the return on Wednesday, 12 March (20:00 GMT), with the winners likely to face Arsenal in the last eight after their 7-1 first-leg thrashing of PSV in Eindhoven.

Atletico midfielder Conor Gallagher told TNT Sports: “Real Madrid are a top team and I think we competed well. I think it was a decent performance.

“We would’ve liked to get a better result but it’s all to play for in the next leg. We feel we can beat any team and with our fans behind us, it helps, and we’ll be looking forward to it.”

UCL: Arsenal hit seven to thrash PSV

Arsenal demolished PSV Eindhoven 7-1 in the Netherlands to take a commanding lead into the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

The Gunners scored three goals in the first half and four goals in the second to all but confirm their place in the quarter-finals of the competition, with a trip to Madrid on the horizon.

Ismael Saibari hit the crossbar early on for the home side but Arsenal took control after Jurrien Timber scored Arsenal’s opener in the 18th minute.

Ethan Nwaneri doubled Arsenal’s lead just three minutes later when Myles Lewis-Skelly cleverly cut the ball back for the 17-year-old to powerfully score past Walter Benitez.

Lewis-Skelly, who had already been booked, was fortunate to stay on the pitch shortly after when he fouled Ledezma, and Mikel Arteta replaced him with Riccardo Calafiori with 10 minutes of the first half left.

Mikel Merino added a third following a defensive mix-up before Noa Lang pulled one back from the penalty spot for PSV after Thomas Partey fouled Luuk De Jong.

Arsenal continued to attack with ease as soon as the second half started and Martin Odegaard made sure there was not going to be a PSV comeback when he scored from close range after Benitez pushed a cross out into the area.

Substitute Calafiori then combined well with Leandro Trossard who chipped the ball over Benitez from close range to score Arsenal’s fifth just one minute later.

Odegaard scored his second with an excellent individual effort before Calafiori grabbed a goal late on as Arsenal registered their record away win in the Champions League.

In the new format, Arsenal can plot their route through the competition, and despite having next week’s second leg to come, they look set to take on either 15-time champions Real Madrid, or their city rivals Atletico.

Real won the first leg of their last-16 tie 2-1 on Tuesday with the second leg to follow at Atletico.

UCL: Real Madrid beat Man City by two late goals

Manchester City are fighting for Champions League survival and a place in the last 16 after Jude Bellingham’s injury-time winner settled a tense play-off first leg in Real Madrid’s favour.

Pep Guardiola’s side rediscovered more of their true form early on at Etihad Stadium as Jack Grealish and Josko Gvardiol combined to set up Erling Haaland for a confident finish after 19 minutes.

Grealish, who had made a fine start, then went off injured and after Haaland hit the bar shortly after the break, Real took control.

Real let City off the hook by failing to take their chances until Kylian Mbappe scrambled home a close-range finish on the hour.

They continued to squander opportunities, including two for Bellingham, and were punished when Haaland put City back in front from the spot after 80 minutes following Dani Ceballos’ foul on Phil Foden.

Real, however, hit back with four minutes left, former City man Brahim Diaz equalisingbefore Bellingham finally hit the target, sliding in from close range to leave the holders as firm favourites to reach the knockout stage in next week’s second leg at The Bernabeu.

UCL: Girona gave us the challenge we wanted – Arteta

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was pleased with the team’s comeback win against Girona in the Champions League.

Jorginho and Ethan Nwaneri scored to secure a fourth consecutive victory and a third-place finish.

Arteta was delighted with the squad rotation and the overall performance against tough opponents.

“That was exactly what we wanted, to finish winning and with a good taste,” he said.

“We talked about consistency and earning the right to win football matches, and I think today we deserved to win the game again. But it shows you how difficult it is to win in the Champions League. We knew coming here we were going to have to suffer at times, and we’ve done it. I think attacking we produced a lot today and I’m very happy overall.

“We managed to give games to players that deserve it, for example Neto, and we have been able to give some minutes to certain players that really needed it, and rest some others. There’s no injuries and a good result, so very positive all round.”

  • UCL: Why we must win against Arsenal – Girona coach

UCL: Why we must win against Arsenal – Girona coach

Girona coach Michel says they’re determined to sign off from the Champions League in the right way.

Girona host Arsenal in their final group game tomorrow night, with the Catalans already eliminated from the competition.

Michel insists it is crucual they offer the right “image” as they end a first ever Champions League campaign.

    The match:

“There are many objectives to achieve tomorrow. The main one is that it is a Champions League match in front of our fans and we want to win after three consecutive defeats. The image is important and we want to maintain our prestige. We deserve to be in this competition because of our great last year and we must not forget that. In addition, a fifth place for a Spanish team in the tournament is still alive and we must fight for it. We have to win for the competition and our fans.”

    Looking back:

“I have enjoyed this competition and as a club we must be able, perhaps not to return to the Champions League, but to repeat in Europe. It has come early for us, we accelerated a lot last year but the growth is there and the line is good.”

    Setting the game:

“There are things at stake, but we must not motivate the players. We are competing against a big team and you cannot let any opportunity pass you by. Winning in the Champions League gives you prestige and there is always something to fight for.”

    Change something?

“If I could do it… I remember that at the beginning of the season we were not in a position to face three competitions due to many circumstances. It was not possible to train with the whole squad at the beginning of the season and then without time it was difficult for us to have available players and do quality training sessions.”

    Learning:

“In top competition you have to train the small details, in the Champions League and in the league. I have to teach the player that one metre is key to attacking and defending. And top rivals that metre… kill you. And it happens to us in both competitions.”

    Goalkeeping:

“Pau López will play. After what happened at the beginning of January, he has trained well. I am calm about him, I hope Gazzaniga is not out for too many days and we have signed Vladyslav Krapyvtsov.”

    The bad run:

“You learn a lot from defeats, but you don’t like them. We did a lot of things wrong and we can improve our game. We haven’t been able to impose our style in some games, but Arsenal always imposes it.”

    Mercado:

“I am not into that. If someone comes, it has to be to grow the club and not because of losing three games. I have already said that the squad has a good level and I have to get more out of it. Something will be done if it has to improve the future and the growth of the club.”

    Girona against the best:

“It can give us confidence, the fact of being able to compete against the big teams, but we have to refine those details to be closer to victory.”

    You haven’t enjoyed it?

“From the inside, we have enjoyed the experience and we have always competed at 100%. The players have too. The fans have experienced situations that have not been the best, but I have already said that it has come too soon as a club. We are growing but we don’t have a stadium for everyone to be in, hopefully that will change soon, but I have images from Milan or Paris where people were enjoying themselves.”

  • UCL: Almighty! Real Madrid win 15th title, beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at Wembley

UCL: Almighty! Real Madrid win 15th title, beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at Wembley

Real Madrid again showed its dominance in football by winning the 15th UEFA Champions League trophy after defeating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 on Saturday at Wembley stadium.

Both teams finished first half goalless with Dortmund asking all the questions.

All effort by the German side to score proved abortive as Real Madrid’s defense and Belgian Goalie, Thibaut Curtois ensured the Spanish side didn’t concede.

Upon resumption of second half, Real Madrid became very  ruthless.

Dani Carvajal headed home Los Blancos first of the night in the 75th minute.

Mistake at the back from Dortmund in the 78th saw Jude Bellingham play the ball out left to Vinicius Junior and he slightly hits the ball into the floor but he won’t care as the Los Blancos scored the second of the night.

The result meant that the Spanish champions have won the UEFA Champions League for the 15th time having last month been crowned LaLiga champions for a 33rd time.

They have also won the UCL title the last 9 times they featured at the final.

Dortmund, who beat Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) home and away in the semifinal, have only lifted the trophy once, in 1997, and finished fifth in the German Bundesliga in the just concluded season 2023/24.
