UCL: Arsenal maul RC Lens 6-0, United draw Galatasaray 3-3 on matchday 5

Arsenal have booked a place in this season’s round of 16 after annihilating RC Lens of France 6-0 at the Emirate stadium on Wednesday night.

The Gunners only needed one point to be certain of reaching the knockout stages, but they didn’t settle for that target as they demolished their overmatched French opponents on a freezing night at the Emirates Stadium.

Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli scored for the Gunners before the half hour mark.

Martin Odegaard added the fifth just before the interval and Jorginho bagged his first goal for Arsenal with a late penalty to cap their biggest win this season.

With one game to spare, the Gunners are guaranteed to finish in first place as they sit four points clear of PSV Eindhoven.

PSV clinched the second qualification place from the group thanks to Lens’ loss and their win at Sevilla earlier on Wednesday.

Securing pole position in the group means Arsenal will have the advantage of a home tie in the last 16 second leg.

Lens had inflicted Arsenal’s only group stage defeat in October, but the Gunners made amends with a total demolition.

Manchester United blew a two-goal lead as their hopes of reaching the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League suffered a major blow following a pulsating 3-3 draw in hostile conditions away to Galatasaray.
The Red Devils led 2-0 and 3-1 in Istanbul but once again failed to protect significant advantages in Europe this season to leave their hopes of progressing from Group A hanging by a thread.
Erik ten Hag’s men got off to the perfect start on a rain-swept pitch thanks to a thunderous opener from Alejandro Garnacho, who followed up his wonder-strike at Everton with an excellent finish on 11 minutes.

Manchester City head coach,  Pep Guardiola has emphasized the importance of his team locking down top spot in their Champions League group.

The holders will lug it out with  RB Leipzig at Etihad Stadium today  in their fifth Group G game, having won four out of four so far.

They and Leipzig have already clinched spots in the knockout stage, but first place in the pool remains up for grabs.

“We have to win or draw,” said Guardiola. “The first step is done for both sides so congratulations to RB Leipzig to qualify for the next round in February.

“It is important to finish first. We believe that when we play the last 16, [having] the second leg at home is not decisive but an advantage and we have to take it.”

City has every reason to be optimistic. Leipzig are fifth in the German Bundesliga, 11 points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen, while City have not lost at home since November 2022.

Guardiola delivered a pessimistic message about a number of fitness issues affecting his squad.

Meanwhile, AC Milan manager,  Stefano Pioli is expecting big things from Samuel Chukwueze in Today’s  UEFA Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund.

Chukwueze impressed in Milan’s 1-0 home win against Fiorentina last Saturday.

The Nigeria international started the game and was in action for 90 minutes.

Pioli was happy with the Nigeria international’s performance against Fiorentina.

“I was happy with his (Chukwueze) performance on Saturday,” the Italian told a press conference on Monday.

“He worked a lot for the team; he found himself in the right positions. He also had a difficult start due to an injury. Now, in my opinion, he’s fine.

UCL: Maguire, Onana inspire United to record first win this season

After losing its first two matches and rooted to the bottom of the  group Manchester United recorded its first win of the UEFA Champions League with a 1-0 win over Dannish side FC Copenhagen.

On an evening where tributes were paid to the late, great Sir Bobby Charlton, the Reds huffed and puffed for large spells, while the visitors regularly threatened.

United improved in the second half of the encounment to produce the much meeded goal that served to be the decider.

Harry Maguire’s header in the 72nd minute  proved to be crucial, as Manchester United saw off FC Copenhagen 1-0 to record its first three points of this season UCL.

The Red Devils had Andre Onana to thank, as the Cameroon goalkeeper saved a last-minute penalty to ensure United won their first game of this season.

  • Napoli claim 1-0 win at strugglers Union Berlin with Raspadori goal

Napoli claim 1-0 win at strugglers Union Berlin with Raspadori goal

Napoli’s Giacomo Raspadori scored a second half goal to secure a 1-0 victory at Union Berlin in their Champions League Group C match on Tuesday.

The result meant Napoli stretched their opponents’ losing run to nine straight games in all competitions.

In a match that had few highlights, the Germans enjoyed the better chances in the first half.

But it was a run by Napoli’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia down the left that decided the game as he set up Raspadori to fire home the winner in the 65th minute.

The result kept Napoli in second place on six points, three behind Real Madrid who won 2-1 at Sporting Braga.

Braga are on three while struggling Union are still without a point in their first season in the competition.

“It wasn’t our best game technically, but winning this kind of game is important,” scorer Raspadori said.

“They were well organised and had prepared for the match very well.

“We knew it would be difficult and we saw it on the pitch. I believe we could have done better.

“But an away win like this in the Champions League is always good. Playing in the Champions League and scoring is fantastic,” he said.

Napoli initially had most possession but Union, desperate to end their losing streak, tried to hit the Italians on the break in the first half through Brenden Aaronson and David Fofana.

The latter, who had an effort saved, also put the ball in the net in the 24th but was ruled offside.

The visitors, without injured striker Victor Osimhen, struggled to break through a solid backline until the Germans repeatedly failed to clear the ball in the 65th.

Kvaratskhelia got possession, turned on the turbo to charge into the box from the left and cut the ball back for Raspadori, who had no trouble beating goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow.

Union, who have now lost their last six league and three Champions League matches on the trot, had no comeback in them despite coming close with a Robin Knoche header in the 81st.

“The first half was courageous and very good from us,” said Union captain Christopher Trimmel.

“It was a good step in the right direction. Yes we lost but overall delivered a good game.”

The frustration of a third straight loss in the competition was evident, however, when Fofana was substituted but refused to shake the hand of coach Urs Fischer, who is under mounting pressure.

UCL: Ancelotti labels Osimhen very dangerous ahead Napoli clash

Carlo Ancelotti, the manager of Spanish side, Real Madrid has labelled Victor Osimhen as a “very dangerous attacker”.

Real Madrid will slug it out with Napoli on Matchday 2 in the UEFA Champions League taking place at Estadio Diego Armando Maradona on Tuesday night.

Osimhen netted five times for Napoli in the UCL in last season’s campaign.

The Nigeria international also registered 26 goals in 32 league appearances to emerge top scorer in Serie A last season.

The 24-year-old has also been in good form for Napoli this term.

The striker has five goals in seven league outings.

“They are very good forwards who have really broken out in the last year, they have demonstrated their quality and shown they are top-level players,” Ancelotti told Real Madrid’s official website.

“They have amazing talent with different characteristics. Kvaratskhelia is very strong one-on-one and Osimhen is very dangerous.”
