Desperate attempts to pitch me against ex-Govs Ibori, Uduaghan will fail – Gov Okowa

Delta State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa on Friday said he would not be distracted by attempts by some of his party men to pitch him against his predecessors.

He spoke in Asaba while receiving defectors from the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC).

He said attempts by some persons in the state to put him on a collision course with past leaders of the state would not work.

He remarked that PDP as a political party believes that power belongs to God and that the people reserved the right to make their choices.

“We are a party that believes that power belongs to God and that’s why we are rejoicing.

“We also believe that power belongs to the people and that the people reserve the right to make their choice.

“Some time ago, I said that power belongs to God and that only God will determine who will succeed me. I wonder why some people are angry about that statement because truly, only God knows who will take over from me.

“We are one family in the PDP and those who don’t have our character are angry because we always say the truth and they are trying all means to scatter our PDP family, but they will always fail because we have bonded very well together as a party.

Together as a family, we can continue to make things happen; together as a family we change things in our family by working hard for everyone.

“We will not work to put money in one person’s pocket, because a day will come when I will expose those of them that are angry with us,’’ the governor said.

According to him, “you voted for me to do what is right for the interest of the people and not to put money in somebody’s pocket; that’s not what you voted me for.”

Okowa added that PDP had worked very well in the state, “beginning from Chief James Ibori’s tenure to Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan and myself; we have worked very well and we are still working.

“If anyone says he is not seeing what we are doing, it’s either that they are blind or they don’t live in Asaba.

“Their attempt to pitch me against my predecessors will not work because I am not quarrelling with them. My predecessors laid the foundation for what we are doing in the state and I am building on the foundations they have laid.

“I am building on the foundation that I met. Some people are angry and want to cause quarrel between me and my predecessors but they have failed because no stranger will deceive us in this state.’’

He commended the people for their support over the years, adding that the coming of the defectors from APC would further strengthen the PDP in the state.

“I congratulate all of you returning home today; by the grace of God, the people will be happy with us by the time we will be handing over in 2023,” he stated.

Chairman of PDP in the State, Kingsley Esiso, described APC as a failed party.

“Under their leadership of this nation, bandits have taken over, prices of food have skyrocketed, farmers can’t go to farm and children can’t go to school because of insecurity.

“They are dreaming and can’t see Delta. They can plan, they can gather, but they will scatter because God is with us.

“The party under my leadership will not tolerate any irritants. We will chase them till they meet their end politically.

“As a party, we take decisions in the best interest of the party and I want to reiterate that Senator Peter Nwaoboshi stands suspended and he must decide where he belongs; he has one month to do so or we will be forced to do the needful,” Esiso stated

NDDC board: Akpabio meets ex-governor Uduaghan in Delta [Photos]

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswil Akpabio, held a meeting with the immediate past governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan in his residence in Warri, Delta State on Friday.

The meeting TheNewsGuru.com, TNG gathered is part of ongoing consultations with stakeholders of the Niger Delta region to ensure peace in the oil-rich region, in respect of the agitations for the swift inauguration of the NDDC board.

The minister visited in the company of the sole administrator of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr. Akwa Effiong.

A Facebook post at about 8:58 pm on Friday by the former governor said issues bordering on fostering peace in the region was the focus of the meeting.

“I had the pleasure to receive my brother, former Governor of Akwa-Ibom State and Minister of Niger Delta Affairs -Sen. Godswill Akpabio, at my country home in Warri earlier today.

“We discussed sundry issues bordering on how to foster the enduring peace and ways to chart new developmental frontiers in our dear Niger Delta region,” the post stated.

President of the Itsekiri National Youth Council, Weyinmi Agbateyiniro and youth leaders were present at the meeting.

Akpabio, on Thursday, landed at the Osubi Airstrip, then boarded a speed boat in the company of Delta’s deputy governor, Kingsley Otuaro, to Oporoza, the country home of ex-militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo (alias Tompolo), in Warri Southwest.

The meeting was held to persuade aggrieved people of the region, especially Tompolo, against following through with the threats to disrupts activities across the Niger Delta, by the end of a seven-day ultimatum which will expire midnight Saturday.

According to reports, stakeholders had remained adamant during the meeting that the seven-day ultimatum stands.

But Senator Akpabio told newsmen shortly after the meeting that he “will fast track the process” of inaugurating the board as soon as he returns to his office in Abuja.

Deputy Governor Otuaro said the minister will be working closely with a selected team to ensure that the process commences and is settled immediately.

#TNGPIBConfab: Uduaghan, Osunbor, Darah back governors on demand for 10% derivation fund for host communities

Former Governors of Delta and Edo States, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan and Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor have backed calls by the South South Governors for an upward review of the provision of 2.5 percent as Host Community Trust Fund in the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) to 10 percent in the best interest of oil communities and the nation.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Uduaghan and Osunbor made the call on Wednesday at the ongoing #TNGPIBConfab.

Uduaghan who is chairman of the ongoing #TNGPIBCOnfab while giving his opening address said: “It is not just about the percentages given to the states, it is about the percentage that gets to the communities themselves, that is why we suggested trust fund, that s the formula we proposed. I want to emphasise the 10% derivations for host communities, 2.5% is too small.

The future of Nigeria is gas, there is so much gas but all the issues surrounding gas should be dealt with by the PIB, especially as regards gas flaring. These challenge is cost by costing challenges; how do we get the best of gas utilisation, we must allow exploration of gas directly; the gas plant in Ogidigben that President Goodluck Jonathan pushed in his last stay in office has today been abandoned, others can be established across the Niger Delta region.

As leaders of the Niger Delta region we must get involved and encourage our lawmakers to pass the PIB bill, if it is done it will do more than economical good, it will also reduce crime in Nigeria as so many youths will be empowered.”

In his own contribution, Prof. Osunbor said: “It gives me much pleasure to speak at this online National Colloquium on the very important subject of the Petroleum Industry Bill 2020. As the title rightly indicates, there is a pervasive air of cautious optimism that at long last, we are close to the end of a long and tortuous journey spanning about 20 years in efforts to have the Bill passed into law by the National Assembly. This optimism is due, no doubt, to the enthusiasm being demonstrated and assurances given by the President of the Senate Dr. Ahmad Lawan and Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila as well as the generality of members of the National Assembly. The title of this colloquium suggests with confidence that “finally” we are “getting it right and breaking the 20-year hiatus” in the sense that we are about to break the jinx. This may well be so. Nevertheless, it is appropriate to be mindful that some imperfections remain in the Bill which need to be smoothened and overcome as the Bill makes its progress through the National Assembly, particularly at the public hearings when all stakeholders, indeed, every Nigerian, will have a chance to contribute towards the eventual passage of a Petroleum Industry Act that will meet the test of time. I am grateful to the organisers of this programme for availing me of this opportunity to contribute my views on this historic piece of legislation of immense national importance. Much more, I commend them for organising this Colloquium as a contribution towards a deeper understanding and passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB)”.

In his own contribution, Prof. G.G. Darah, Professor of Literature in English at Delta State University (DELSU) and the Delta State chairman of an Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), said the oil producing states will not shift stand on the 10% Host Community Trust Fund in the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB).

TNGPIBConfab: Gas is the future of Nigeria – Uduaghan

Chairman ongoing #TNGPIBConfab Former Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan on Wednesday urged the Nigerian government to take gas seriously, stressing that there is so much gas in the nation that can provoke an economic turnaround if well addressed in the in the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB).

However, Uduaghan admitted there are challenges and issues surrounding which are hindering the gas gathering process.

He also advocated for 10% as host community fund as against the 2.5 per cent stipulated in the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB).

“It is not just about the percentages given to the states, it is about the percentage that gets to the communities themselves, that is why we suggested trust fund, that s the formula we proposed. I want to emphasise the 10% derivations for host communities, 2.5% is too small.

These challenge is cost by costing challenges; how do we get the best of gas utilisation, we must allow exploration of gas directly;the gas plant in Ogidigben, Delta State that President Goodluck Jonathan pushed in his last stay in office has today been abandoned, others can be established across the Niger/Delta. As leaders of the N/Delta region we must get involved and encourage our lawmakers to pass the PIB bill, if it is done it will do more than economical good, it will also reduce crime in Nigeria as so many youhs will be empowered.

Also, speaking at the summit, former NDDC MD, Ibim Semenitari who also supported the call for 10% derivation funds for host communities, however, tasked TheNewsGuru to simplify the PIB bill for easy understanding amongst all stakeholder public.

She said: “We need to provide easy ways to breakdown the PIB for easy understanding, can we now have a PIB for idiots from a medium like TheNewsGuru as a media outfit advancing for the betterment of the Niger/Delta region and Nigeria at large.”

  • Wike, Ex-gov Uduaghan, Judges visit Okowa, pay tributes to late father

Wike, Ex-gov Uduaghan, Judges visit Okowa, pay tributes to late father

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers on Monday, described the late Pa Arthur Okowa, father of Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta, as a man of great substance who left a marvelous legacy.

Wike stated this when he led a delegation from Rivers on a condolence visit to Gov. Okowa at the Government House, Asaba.

He said that he was in Delta to commiserate with the Okowa family, the government and people of Delta on the loss of the patriarch of the Okowa family and the late Majority Leader of the Delta State House of Assembly, Mr Tim Owhefere.

He stated that Gov. Okowa remained a great friend and colleague he had utmost respect for and, as such, must identify with him on the loss of his dear father.

“On behalf of the government and people of Rivers State, we are here to condole with you on the death of your father and the Majority Leader of the Delta State House of Assembly.

“When I heard of the tragic incidents of the loss of your father and the Majority Leader, I was shocked.

“It’s most unfortunate; even if your father lived to a good old age, nobody would want to lose his father because as a father, the kind of advice and the things he will tell you, nobody will say it to you.
“And, as it is today you have lost that kind of fatherly advice you normally get from your late father. I know how painful it is and whatever affects you affects Delta State and also affects Rivers State.

“God gives and God takes; it doesn’t matter how we feel about it.

“It has happened but one thing you must know is that wherever your father is he must be very happy about the legacies he has left behind.

“We have come here to comfort you and tell you that we are with you in prayers throughout these trying times,’’Wike said.

Also, the immediate past state governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan and his wife, Roli, also visited Gov. Okowa in Asaba
Uduaghan said that Pa Okowa had been a father to him and many people for many years and told the Okowas to see the death of their father as one tough time that must pass by.

“I am here first as Uduaghan family and as the immediate past Governor, to pay our condolence on the death of Pa Okowa.

“Pa Okowa was not just a father of PDP, but was first a father of GDM for those of us who know his history far back.

“He had been our father for quite some time; age wise, we wouldn’t say he didn’t live long enough.

“He lived for 88 years and that’s quite remarkable in these times where you talk to someone last week and this week he’s gone.

“No matter how old he was, his death is still painful and we cannot question God because God cannot keep him forever with us,” he said.

Others who paid condolence visit included the Service Commanders of Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy and Nigeria Air force from their formations in Warri.

They were led by Air Commodore Augustine Vunombagai, Commander 371 Nigerian Air Force Detachment, Warri; Commodore Semiu Adepegba, NNS DELTA and Col. Sani Ahmed, Commander, Sector One, Operation Delta Safe.

Vunombagai, who spoke on behalf of the commanders, said they were in Asaba to condole with the governor and his family on the death of Pa Okowa.

The Chief Judge of the state, Justice Marshall Umukoro, also led a delegation of judges in the state to condole with the governor and his family.

Responding, Gov. Okowa thanked Wike and all the visitors for their concern, saying that his family was encouraged by the visit of several friends and well wishers, including the Rivers governor, adding that his late father was a father to many.

“I must thank you for this visit because you are my first colleague to come. I do not take this visit for granted because I know our relationship is beyond that of governors.

“My father lived a glorious life and we thank God for calling him at this time.

“He was actually a very active man in his teaching days. He was quite a disciplinarian and that helped to shape some of us in the course of our life.

“He was full of life, but in a few days he was just gone. We give God the glory for his life having lived the number of years that he has lived.

“Obviously, we will miss him a lot; no matter how tough you are, the memory sometimes will just flash and it’s truly very painful.

“But with people like you and many others who have been coming,

I believe that we are beginning to have the courage to pass through the difficult times.

“As for the Majority Leader, his death is very painful.

“Before he was moved to the intensive care unit, he asked me to pray for him and I did pray for him.

“He was full of life and quite a very dependable person. We give God praise and we thank Him for everything that has happened,” Okowa said.

The Deputy Governor, Mr Kingsley Otuaro, and Sen. James Manager were among top government functionaries on hand to receive the visitors.

  • Contract list indicting Ibori, Kalu, Uduaghan, others not compiled by Akpabio – NDDC

Contract list indicting Ibori, Kalu, Uduaghan, others not compiled by Akpabio – NDDC

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) on Tuesday said the controversial list of former governors and lawmakers submitted by the Minister of Niger Delta Senator Godswill Akpabio to the House of Representatives last week as beneficiaries of the commission’s contract largess was not compiled by the minister but a past management of the commission.

The commission however enjoined those whose names appeared on the list before the House not to panic because it had found that their some people used their names to get the jobs.

Prominent among those whose names are in the list compiled in 2018 are former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia), James Ibori (Delta}, Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta) and Senator Peter Nwaoboshi. But they have all denied ever enjoying such favours from the commission.

The NDDC which in a statement on Tuesday, said the 2018 list was part of the avalanche of documents submitted to its forensic auditors, added that there were other sets of lists of emergency project contracts awarded in 2017 and 2019 not submitted to the National Assembly.

It explained that the 2018 list was released to the House to expose committee chairmen in the National Assembly who used fronts to collect contracts from the commission, some of which were never executed.

“The IMC of the commission stands by the list, which came from files already in the possession of the forensic auditors. It is not an Akpabio list but the NDDC’s list. The list is part of the volume of 8,000 documents already handed over to the forensic auditors,” the NDDC said in the statement by its Director, Corporate Affairs, Charles Odili.

Odili added that the list did not include a case of 250 contracts, which were signed for and collected in one day by one person for members of the National Assembly.

According to him, the ongoing forensic audit would unearth persons behind the contracts.

He said that the commission had positioned 185 media support specialists to identify the site of every project captured in its books for verification by the forensic auditors.

Odili advised members of the public to discountenance the “avalanche of falsehood being orchestrated by mischief makers,” regretting that “more insinuations and accusations may be thrown into the public space by those opposed to the IMC.”

  • Akpabio’s NDDC contract allegation against me ridiculous, false – Uduaghan

Akpabio’s NDDC contract allegation against me ridiculous, false – Uduaghan

Former Governor of Delta State, Emmanuel Uduaghan on Monday reacted to a report published in the media, in which he was listed among those awarded various contracts by the Niger Delta Development Commission.

In his reaction, Uduaghan through his Media Assistant, Monoyo Edon, said it was ridiculous that the said contract supposedly awarded to him is a road inside Port Harcourt town.

He described the report as false while hoping the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio makes a corrective statement on the report which has since been widely circulated in the media space.

The statement reads: The attention of His Excellency, former Gov of Delta State Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, has been drawn to a publication by The Punch Newspapers of Monday 3rd August 2020, which stated that the “Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has linked two former governors of Delta State, Messrs James Ibori and Emmanuel Uduaghan, to the various contracts awarded by the Niger Delta Development Commission”

In the said publication, it was stated that “Uduaghan was linked to the emergency repairs of Close B, Alhaji Estate & Environs, Rumuodomaya, Port Harcourt at a cost of N429m.”

We want to state very clearly that the said accusation is FALSE. Dr. Uduaghan has never approached the NDDC for any contract whatsoever. It is even more ridiculous that the said contract is a road inside Port Harcourt town.

Dr. Uduaghan has drawn the attention of the Hon. Minister of the Niger Delta, Sen Godswill Akpabio to the publication and hopes he makes a correction.

Members of the public are advised to disregard the mischevious publication.
