  • UEFA Ban: Guardiola speaks on quitting Man City

    Pep Guardiola insisted on Wednesday that he will stay with Manchester City, dismissing rumours he will hit the exit door following the club’s two-year ban from European competitions by UEFA.

    Guardiola vowed that the “truth will prevail” at the end.

    “If they don’t sack me I will stay here 100 percent more than ever. First because I want to stay. It’s something special, more than the contract I have,” Guardiola told Sky Sports after Wednesday’s 2-0 win against West Ham at the Etihad Stadium.

    “I said before, I say now, I want to stay and help the club and maintain this level as long as possible.

    “When I said I love this club I like to be here, why should I leave? No matter what happens I will be here next season.”

    City were banned from the Champions League and Europa League for the next two seasons and fined 30 million euros (£24.9 million) on Friday after UEFA found them guilty of committing “serious breaches” of financial regulations.

    The Premier League champions overstated sponsorship revenue in accounts submitted between 2012 and 2016, according to European football’s governing body.

    The severe punishment will cost City an estimated £170 million in lost Champions League revenue and the club reacted furiously, immediately vowing to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

    Amid speculation that Guardiola could quit if they lose the appeal, the City manager used his first public comments since news of the suspension broke to make it clear he will not desert the club whatever happens in court.

    That was the best possible news for City fans, who will hope Guardiola’s faith in what he has been told by his bosses proves wise.

    Guardiola said City’s Abu Dhabi-based owners told him the ban was unfair and he supports their decision to appeal.

    “It’s not finished. The club believes it’s unfair so we are going to appeal. When someone believes they are right they have to fight,” he said.

    “We are going to fight like we have fought every single game. We are optimistic that at the end the truth will prevail and next season we will be in the Champions League.

    “All we can do on the pitch is what we have done the last four years and focus on that until the end of the season.

    “I trust 100 percent completely my club what they have done. They explained to me the reasons why.”

    After scoring City’s second goal against West Ham to cap a man of the match display, Kevin De Bruyne insisted his team-mates will stay focused despite speculation that some of them will ask to leave if the ban is not lifted.

    “Obviously we were on holiday when the statement happened and I think we came back and we played football and the situation is what it is,” De Bruyne said.

    “We trained like normal and in the end nothing really changes for us – we just play the games that we have. Even today we gave a good performance and we still have a lot to play for.

    “I think the team gave their statement, so I don’t know as players what else we can do.

    “We can just play football and in the end the situation will show what it can show.”

  • Guardiola to remain at Man City despite UEFA ban

    Pep Guardiola has told friends he intends to stay at Manchester City despite the club’s two-year ban from the Champions League.

    Unless City overturn the ban imposed by Uefa on Friday, they will not compete in European football until 2022 after this season.

    Guardiola’s contract is due to expire in 2021.

    He is expected to speak about the subject for the first time on Wednesday.

    His contract does have a break clause at the end of this season and it was anticipated he would activate it should City fail to win their appeal which they will be submitting to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in the next few days.

    However, it is understood the 49-year-old has said he will not be doing that and remains committed to the club.

    Guardiola is likely to discuss the issue after Wednesday’s rearranged Premier League game against West Ham.

    In a bizarre situation, neither side has played since the initial game was postponed due to bad weather on 9 February.

    As both clubs held pre-match news conferences two days before the game was supposed to be played, they have been told by the Premier League there is no contractual requirement to hold another and it is understood neither side will do so.

    Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he feels for Pep Guardiola and the Manchester City players after the club’s suspension from Europe.

    Uefa have banned City from European competition for two years for “serious” financial fair-play breaches.

    City plan to appeal against the ban and have 10 days to take the issue to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

    “It was a shock when I heard it. In this moment I imagine it’s very hard for them,” the German said.

    “I have no idea how these things work – what I can say is Manchester City under Pep Guardiola play sensational football. I’ve always admired what they do.

    “To be honest I feel for Pep and the players because, wow, they did, for sure, nothing wrong. They just played football and sensational football.

    “Pep helped the league to improve football.”

  • Man City respond to UEFA ban

    Manchester City said they would appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after being hit with a two-season ban from European competition on Friday.

    UEFA, European football’s governing body, imposed the punishment on the English giants for breaches of their financial fair play rules.

    Manchester City said in a statement they were “disappointed but not surprised” by the outcome of a “prejudicial process” and would now seek an “impartial judgment” by commencing CAS proceedings at “the earliest opportunity”.
