Bishop Kukah reveals real problem of Nigeria as Sultan sets agenda for Tinubu

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammed Sa’ad Abubakar III, has urged the incoming administration of Sen. Bola Tinubu to ensure good governance and developmental politics.

Abubakar gave the task on Saturday in Abuja at the 2023 Presidential Inauguration Lecture.

The lecture, titled “Deepening Democracy for Development and Integration”, was delivered by the former President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta.

According to the Sultan, Kenyatta’s words in calling for unity and inclusiveness in governance in Nigeria were those of a very patriotic Nigerian.

“The democracy we are supposed to practice is the type that allows for the development, peace and stability of our people.

“Without development, without stability, there is no democracy. You do not have democracy when you do not have good leaders to practice that democracy.

“Leadership is of utmost importance if we want to practice democracy and move the country forward,” he said.

The Sultan said that it was a worthy achievement that Nigeria was celebrating its seventh consecutive democratic transition.

He described the milestone as a significant achievement for both the winners and those who did not win in the election, adding that they both share in the credit.

“We are here to see how we can enrich the conversation and advise the incoming administration on ways to improve on governance and development in an atmosphere of peace and security,” he said.

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, said that religion, just like any other form of identity like ethnicity and gender, was not a problem in Nigeria.

According to Kukah, the real problem is when these categories are left unattended.

“It is then that they provoke problems. I do not like to talk about religion because I do not believe that we have a religion problem,” he said.

He called on African leaders to wake up to the threat of “illiberal democracy”.

“There is a resurgence of democracy that looks like democracy but does not work like democracy,” he said.

He called on the incoming administration to take advantage of Kenyatta’s lecture as a basis to build a good society.

Mr Akinwumi Adesina, the President of African Development Bank, said the election of a new president always elicited hope.

Adesina said that Nigerians would be looking to the incoming government with the hope that it will assure security, peace and stability.

“Hope that you will heal and unite the fractured nations; hope that you will rise above patronage and forge a compelling force to move the nation forward with inclusiveness, fairness and equity.

“Also, hope that you will dramatically improve the economy,” he said.

He said the starting point in fixing the economy must be micro economy and fiscal stability.

“Unless the micro economy is revived the fiscal challenges addressed boldly, resources for development will not be there,” he said.

On his part, Mr Dayo Israel urged the incoming government to encourage greater youth participation in governance.

Israel also commended President Muhammadu Buhari for enabling the “Not too young to run” Bill that became a law.

  • President Buhari’s speech at 3rd Ministerial Performance Review Retreat

President Buhari’s speech at 3rd Ministerial Performance Review Retreat

    PROTOCOL:

It gives me great pleasure to welcome everyone to the 3rd Year and my last Ministerial Performance Review Retreat organised to evaluate the level of progress made in the implementation of the Nine Priority Agenda of this Administration.

    2. I am particularly delighted to welcome His Excellency, Uhuru Kenyatta, the immediate past President of the Republic of Kenya and members of his delegation, and specially thank him for honouring our invitation to be the Keynote Speaker at this Retreat. We look forward to hearing about your experience especially around the last months prior to the handover to your successor.

    3. This Retreat is organised at a time when we have commenced political activities and campaigns for the forthcoming general elections in the 1st Quarter of 2023. It therefore, provides an opportunity for us as a Government to reflect on the progress made so far, review the status of implementation of the Policies, Programmes and Projects of Government in line with the collective aspirations of our people as well as identify areas that need urgent intervention.

    4. An exercise like this, will ensure that we maintain the right trajectory before the end of May, 2023, in order to achieve the promises we made to the Nigerian people, at the inception of this Administration.

    5. I am glad to note that, over the past three years, Ministries have continued to navigate the challenging times to ensure the implementation of Policies, Programmes and Projects in the Ministerial Mandates signed by Ministers and Permanent Secretaries in 2019.

    6. *The implementation of the laudable policy thrust of this Administration is periodically tracked, reviewed and analysed by the Central Delivery Coordination Unit through quarterly performance reports of the 29 Ministries including the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

    7. Through the innovative delivery initiative put in place by this Government in 2019, I have continued to receive weekly updates from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, prepared by CDCU on the implementation of the Ministerial Mandates. So far, the reports show that we are making remarkable progress and on track to reach most of the deliverables in the Ministerial Mandates against the benchmarked targets for 2023.

    8. The objective is to ensure that we complete and deliver on our flagship projects and programmes, promote sustainable economic growth and development, as well as improve the living standard of our people.

    9. In recognition of the importance of critical infrastructure in economic development and the quest of this Administration to leave a lasting legacy, we have implemented high-impact projects across the length and breadth of the Country that meet the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians.

    10. *Some of the notable achievements include the completion of 326km Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri rail line and railway ancillary facilities; the completion of over 156.5km Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge railway modernization project with extension to Lagos Port, Apapa.

    11. On road projects, this Administration has constructed 408Km of roads; 2,499Km of SUKUK roads and maintenance of 15,961Km of roads across the Country. Key among these projects are the construction of 1.9km 2nd Niger Bridge linking Anambra and Delta States with 10.30km approach road; rehabilitation, construction & expansion of Lagos-Shagamu-Ibadan dual carriageway; the ongoing rehabilitation of Abuja-Kaduna – Zaria – Kano Road, among others.

    12. We have sustained our commitment to infrastructural development for the past 7 years. This is evident in the handing over of 941km of completed SUKUK road projects nationwide.

    13. Furthermore, the Federal Government has embarked on the reconstruction of 21 selected Federal Roads totaling 1,804.6km, under the Road Infrastructure Development & Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit Policy. The roads which are funded by the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited are in addition to similar existing collaboration with Messrs. Dangote Industries Limited and other corporate organisations to improve the stock of our road infrastructure.

    14. On another front, the establishment of a National Carrier for Nigeria is at 91% completion, expected to commence flight operations before the end of this year. This is being boosted with the certification of two of our International Airports (Lagos & Abuja) by International Civil Aviation Organization, while Kano and Port Harcourt Airports are undergoing similar certification process.

    15. On the economy, we have witnessed seven consecutive quarters of growth, after negative growth rates recorded in the 2nd and 3rd Quarters of 2020. The GDP grew by 3.54% (year-on-year) in real terms in the 2nd Quarter of 2022. This growth rate represents a sustained positive economic performance, especially for the Non-Oil GDP which fell by 4.77% in Q2 2022 against Oil GDP that grew by -11.77%.

    16. Most Sectors of the economy recorded positive growth which reflects the effective implementation of the economic sustainability measures introduced by this Administration.

    17. As part of our continued drive to promote the Communications & Digital Economy Sector, giant strides have been made through our broadband coverage which currently stands at 44.32%. This is being reinforced by 77.52% 4G coverage with the establishment of 36,751 4G base stations nationwide.

    18. The Power Sector has remained a critical priority for the Administration. The implementation of a ‘Willing Buyer-Willing Seller’ Policy introduced by this Administration has opened up opportunities for increased delivery of electricity to underserved homes and industries.

    19. We are also executing a number of critical projects through the Transmission Rehabilitation and Expansion Programme, which will result in achieving the national goal of improved power supply by 2025.

    20. It is important to state that the partnership between the Federal Government of Nigeria and German Siemens AG through the Presidential Power Initiative to increase electricity generation to 25,000 Megawatts (MW) in six years is on course, as the first batch of the transformers has arrived Nigeria already.

    21. Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, you will recall that I signed the much-awaited Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) into law on 16th August 2021. The Act provides a legal, governance, regulatory and fiscal framework for the Nigerian Petroleum Industry, as well as the development of host communities and related matters.

    22. To achieve the objectives of the PIA, we have unbundled the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation and have established the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission and the Nigerian Midstream & Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority.

    23. As part of efforts toward strengthening our national security, we have substantially invested in arms, weapons and other critical military hardware as well as continuous training for our Armed Forces.

    24. The Nigerian Air Force has acquired 38 brand-new aircraft and is expecting another batch of 36 new ones, while the Nigerian Navy has been equipped with new platforms, sophisticated riverine, Rigid-Hull Inflatable, Seaward Defence, Whaler & Fast Attack Boats as well as Helicopters and Capital Ships.

    25. To boost the number of our Police personnel, 20,000 policemen have been recruited, trained, fully integrated and deployed in 2020 and 2021. This exercise has strengthened our community policing strategy which is enshrined in the Police Act, 2020.

    26. As an Administration, we are unwavering in our fight against corruption. We will continue to review and prosecute high-profile corruption cases and ensure speedy completion. Accordingly, we have established platforms to promote collaboration among anti-corruption and prosecuting Agencies of Government. This is to ensure Government at all levels is effective, efficient, accountable and transparent.

    27. The implementation of our Social Investment Programmes and other socio-economic programmes and policies, demonstrates our Administration’s continued commitment to enhancing the welfare of the average Nigerian. As of June 2022, we had enrolled 75% of the 1 million beneficiaries of Batch C under the N-POWER Programme. Additionally, 9,990,862 pupils are being fed through the School Feeding Programme, which employs 128,531 cooks in local communities.

    28. Following the passage of the National Health Act in 2014, this Administration began the inclusion of the 1% minimum portion of the Consolidated Revenue Fund to cater for the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF).

    29. Consequently, 988,652 poor and indigent Nigerians have been enrolled in the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF).

    30. We should also note that a total of 7,373 primary health facilities have been accredited and capitated under the National Health Insurance Scheme pathway, while 7,242 Primary Health Care facilities are receiving Decentralized Facility Financing under the National Primary Health Care Development Agency – Basic Health Care Provision Fund gateway.

    31. On the issue of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Nigeria has done extremely well in its response to the Pandemic, having been commended by the World Health Organisation.

    32. As at end of September this year, 51,713,575 eligible people had received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, representing 46.3% of the eligible population. Out of this number, 38,765,510 people have been fully vaccinated, and this represents 34.7% of the eligible population that is fully vaccinated.

    33. I, therefore, encourage all eligible Nigerians to ensure that they are fully vaccinated as Nigeria’s vaccine stock balance stands at about 27 million doses.

    34. As a direct result of our investment, the Agricultural Sector has experienced significant growth. The shortfall in food production and food importation bills have both been reduced significantly. Along with the production of other staple crops, we have reached our goal of self-sufficiency in rice production. We are exerting a lot of effort to solve the problem of the rising cost of food that is related to inflation, being a global crisis.

    35. Our efforts in building the capacity of our youth are yielding results. Only recently, Nigeria finished 7th on the Medals Table out of 72 Nations and Territories that participated in the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, United Kingdom, winning 12 Gold, 9 Silver and 14 Bronze.
    36. Indeed, the Nation is proud of the exploits of Tobi Amusan for winning the 2022 World Athletics Championships 100-metre hurdles gold medal in Eugene, Oregon, thereby setting a new world record at the World Athletics Championships.
    37. Distinguished Guests and Participants, to consolidate our achievements over the last three years, this Retreat has been designed to:
    a. Review the performance of Ministries in delivering the Ministerial Mandates signed in 2019;
    b. Identify and propose solutions towards resolving key impediments to implementation; and
    c. Re-strategize on how to accelerate the delivery of results along the Nine Priority Areas of our Administration, especially as the Administration is winding down.

    38. Ladies and Gentlemen, at this critical point in the life of our Administration, it is imperative for Ministers, Permanent Secretaries and all Heads of Agencies to reinvigorate their efforts in ramping-up delivery of flagship programmes and projects contained in their Ministerial Mandates.

    39. Let me now acknowledge the efforts of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and his able team in sustaining the Annual Performance Review Retreats, which has enabled us to maintain focus on our Agenda and more importantly, provided solid evidence that supports our achievements.

    40. I am also proud to see that our Administration is staying true to our commitment to the Open Government Partnership initiative which I signed up in 2017. In this regard, the Presidential Delivery Tracker was launched on 30th August 2022, which is a clear testament to this Administration’s commitment to participatory governance.

    41. As part of efforts to strengthen performance management culture, the Central Delivery Coordination Unit is being institutionalised. As an initiative of this Administration, I am delighted to bequeath this legacy to my successor as part of the mechanisms that will assist the next Administration in delivering on its promises to the Nigerian people.

    42. Finally, I wish to encourage all participants to engage optimally throughout this Retreat.

    43. I look forward to a very fruitful session and stimulating exchange of views.

    44. It is my pleasure now to formally declare this Retreat open.

    45. Thank you and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

BREAKING: William Ruto wins Kenyan presidential election

Kenya’s Deputy President, William Ruto has defeated opposition leader, Raila Odinga backed by Uhuru Kenyatta in the Kenyan presidential election.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Ruto led a tight presidential race against Odinga, official results reported by Kenyan media showed on Monday.

Ruto was declared the winner of the presidential election by the Kenyan Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), chaired by Wafula Chebukati.

He won the election, polling 50.49 per cent of the total votes cast and was declared president-elect by Chebukati. Odinga came second with 48.85 per cent of the votes.

TNG reports the announcement of the results of the Kenyan presidential election is coming six days after Kenyans went to the polls.

The credibility of the election results has been called to question. Four IEBC Commissioners led by Vice Chair of the Commission, Juliana Cherera have disowned the results, saying tallying was opaque.

  • Don’t rig the elections: An open letter to Uhuru Kenyatta from Nigeria – By Eferovo Igho

Don’t rig the elections: An open letter to Uhuru Kenyatta from Nigeria – By Eferovo Igho

    Dear Mr Kenyatta,

Please don’t rig the elections. Let Kenyans vote for the leader(s) of their choice.

You don’t say ‘I will not hand over to so and so’, which you have said repeatedly and over time. That is a statement of chaos of unimaginable distractious consequence. The only way to achieve that is by rigging. And it is very disastrious.  Kenya is a democracy. Let the people give the mandate, and you handover. Even sane emperors know they don’t own a Nation.

You were given the Presidency by the people and not by the highly esteemed Kibaki, who you apparently have learnt nothing from because of a dead political father whose instructions you are carrying out in the present Presidential race just to settle with his ‘political enemy’ all to safeguard his family which he feared may be dealt with for obvious reasons. It was a deal secondarily to avoid another Kalengin family competing with the Moi family.

Didn’t my heart and spirit here in Nigeria go with you in all those meetings the said ‘political enemy’, the now dead man’s son, the now dead man (who incidentally is far the worst leader Kenya ever had and second worst in the Continent after Idi Amin Dada Oumee) and you were having before his demise? Didn’t we see from here why and how your Deputy was prevented by the man’s son from seeing the man at that time?

Do the dead mandate? Let the living do. You have chosen a course that ordinarily you wouldn’t have taken before the so-called Handsake which came on the heels of those aforesaid meetings with the then old man. What may have been transferred in that Handshake may be as horrible as your actions since then. And it gives life to the many readings of some spiritual covenants made from Kisumu to Ramogi Hills, with Mama and baby present.

Since then you helplessly care no more for your own thus playing perfectly the Biblical Ostrich, which please see: Job 39:13-18 (ESV):

“The wings of the ostrich wave proudly, but are they the pinions and plumage of love? For she leaves her eggs to the earth and lets them be warmed on the ground, forgetting that a foot may crush them and that the wild beast may trample them. She deals cruelly with her young, as if they were not hers; though her labor be in vain, yet she has no fear, because God has made her forget wisdom and given her no share in understanding. When she rouses herself to flee, she laughs at the horse and his rider.”

You’ve been acting proudly probably because of your family background forgetting that whatever it (that background) is, is by the courtesy of Kenyans, and whatever you are today is by same. You don’t own Kenya because you are President. Kibaki never own it. Kenya own the Presidents. So, never wave your wings so proudly like the Ostrich. Don’t delude Kenyans to think you love them. Your ‘pinions and plumage’ are not of love, but just like the Ostrich you are killing your ‘loved ones’ bringing many feet to crush and trample on them. That is what the evil handshake has done.

You tried in a way I’m yet to understand to mutilate your Country’s Constitution spending to Everest the people’s money until a very dangerous ‘reggae’ was stopped. Your own Party, a National Party is not even today now sure of winning Kiambu County. You used your own hands to tear it apart and we watched from here dazed with our hands akimbo. Then your government came crashing down. Haba!  Did the evil powers you once castigated came on your unguarded hour? With bouyant economy handed over by Mai Kibaki setting the stage to becoming a ‘tiger’ nation, today the Kenyan nation is wallowing and suffocating under in debts.

And then too, you attempted with no mean strange strength to cause total confusion in the Mt, among your own people. Rather than having that negative success, it is they who apparently knew you were confused and therefore stayed intact. They overcame the Ostrich spirit. Talk of how you are out to destroy your own: The list runs ad infinitum.

Have you forgotten wisdom? Have you no more share of understanding? Of the Ostrich spirit I again allude to. Now is it the Country itself by acts of rigging you want to set on fire? Please don’t.

For, we fear your alleged night meetings that are going on, you spiritedly denying opponents rally venues, fake opinion polls sponsored to shout out voodoo figures etc, and your repeated undemocratic audacity not to handover to a certain person are all harbingers of your plan: Rigging. What a bad way to set the stage for crises.

Don’t you love Kenya your country. It is your own. Do you prefer one dead man who died in good oldage to lives of millions of Kenyans most of whom are in their tender age? And now to think of actualising any rigging plot will be the climax of playing the Biblical Ostrich. Please don’t. It does not augur with nations that do that.

May I say parenthetically that the other day you were in Tanzania praising Magufuli to high heavens and said specifically too that he has taught Africa to govern without borrowing from foreign countries, even though you have carelessly borrowed from those places unceasingly, AND WORSE STILL, KEPT BORROWING AFTER THAT MAGUFULI PRAISES, AND STILL BORROWING.

Visiting Kenya frequently in the years of Kibaki and seeing live what Kenya is in your days and worse still what has become of Kenya after that sorry Handshake, I am too saddened. Too bad. The only thing that is in tact now may well be your family. Your hands have destroyed what is yours. And today, Kenya is already bleeding.

Don’t get it to bleed further. Let the people pick their leader by ballot – that is free, fare and transparent, which is why Chebukati is there. It is not your station. Please! Don’t allow the spirit of that old man control you from the grave. He is dead. Enough of this Kid-Presidency controlled by a ‘triumvirate’ of dead Moi, the Bondo man and Mama.

DON’T RIG THE ELECTIONS IF YOU LOVE KENYA.  Please, please and please.

    God bless Kenya.

Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta quits social media, gives reasons

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday suspended his social media accounts citing infiltration by unauthorised individuals.

Kenyatta has been active on social media platforms, Twitter and Facebook, where he has millions of followers, earning the tag ‘digital president’.

“On the account of unauthorised access to official social media handles of the President of the Republic of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, all official social media handles of the president have been suspended.

“Although remedial measures were being taken to restore them,’’ Nzioka Waita, State House Chief of Staff, said in a statement posted on social media.

Kenyatta, before the suspension, had posted on Twitter and Facebook his resolve to fight corrupt officials noting he will not spare even his friends, a message that generated heated reactions.

The Kenyan leader has pledged to reinvigorate the war against graft during his second and final term in office.

Just in: Jubilation in Kenya as Supreme court annuls Uhuru Kenyatta election victory

Kenya’s supreme court has nullified Uhuru Kenyatta’s win in the presidential election last month and ordered a new vote within 60 days.

The six-judge bench ruled 4-2 in favour of a petition filed by the opposition candidate Raila Odinga, who claimed that the electronic voting results were hacked into and manipulated in favour of the incumbent. Kenyatta had won a second term with 54% of the vote.

“The declaration [of Kenyatta’s win] is invalid, null and void,” said the judge David Maranga, announcing the verdict. The court did not place any blame on Kenyatta or his party.

Odinga said: “It’s a very historic day for the people of Kenya and by extension the people of Africa. For the first time in the history of African democratisation, a ruling has been made by a court nullifying [the] irregular election of a president. This is a precedent-setting ruling.”

Lawyers for Kenyatta described the nullification as a “very political decision” but said they would live with the consequences.

Odinga’s lawyer had asked the court to invalidate Kenyatta’s win, saying scrutiny of the forms used to tally the votes found anomalies that affected nearly 5 million votes.

Kenya’s electoral commission has said there was a hacking attempt but that it failed. International election observers have said they saw no interference with the vote.

Odinga, a longtime opposition candidate and the son of Kenya’s first vice-president, unsuccessfully challenged the results of the 2013 vote. His supporters at first said they would not go to court again this time but filed a petition two weeks ago.

Human rights groups have said police killed at least 24 people in unrest that followed the vote on 8 August.

Kenya was braced for further protests on Friday and police were deployed to sensitive areas of the capital, Nairobi. Security was tight around the courthouse as the judges prepared to rule on the challenge.

“This day is the D-day. We are going to know who is the president and we are very confident that the supreme court is going to give us our president,” said one Nairobi resident, Felix Achieng, before the ruling.

Local newspapers declared Friday a “date with destiny.” Many shops in the capital remained closed.

  • Kenyan doctors strike: Military medics deployed

Kenyan doctors strike: Military medics deployed

The Kenyan government on Friday deployed the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) doctors to attend to emergency cases at the country’s largest referral hospital in Nairobi amid crisis in the health sector due to an ongoing strike.

KDF spokesman Lt. Col. Paul Njuguna said the military doctors will offer services at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) after 290 specialists joined the ongoing medics’ strike which entered its fifth day.

He said the deployment of doctors is part of KDF duties of alleviating sufferings, adding that the military has already sent enough personnel at KNH. Njuguna said the doctors would remain at the hospital until the strike is over.

“Our doctors have gone to KNH to assist the patients suffering from the strike by doctors. They will remain until the ongoing strike is over. That is part of our mandate and we have stepped in to help the needy cases there. We have specialists to attend to them,” Njuguna said.

The deployment came hours after President Uhuru Kenyatta urged doctors to return to work and not to make innocent patients suffer.

Kenyatta said the government was keen on ensuring that issues that staged the strike are resolved and a permanent solution found.

The deployment of doctors was prompted by the move by 200 consultants attached to the largest referral hospital joined their striking colleagues to push for the implementation of the 2013 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that awarded them a 300 percent pay increment and agreed to employ more doctors and nurses to reduce their workload and doctor to patient ratio from the current 1:16,000.

The strike by the health workers has dealt a major blow to thousands of patients since the country’s largest population depends on public health facilities.

Gory pictures of agony, misery and pain are all written on the faces of the patients who are in most cases turned away or left unattended.

Meanwhile, the health ministry said the government has offered to increase pay perk for striking doctors of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union effective January 1, 2017.

However, the proposal which was fronted by the National and County governments on Wednesday after extensive meetings has been rejected by the doctors.

The two arms of the government have also committed not to victimizing or taking disciplinary action against members of the union for participating in the ongoing industrial action.

The ministry said efforts to permanently, amicably and sustainably resolve the underlying issues are ongoing.
