University of Ibadan students protest against fees hike

The Students’ Union of the University of Ibadan (UI) on Friday rejected the school fees increment approved by the governing council of the institution. To show their disapproval, the students staged an overnight protest from 10:20 pm to 2 a.m.

President of the Student Union Government (SUG), Bolaji Aweda; Vice-President, Bolutife Aboderin, and Secretary, Daniel Elemide in a statement, rejected the new fees.

“We reject the decision made by the council. We are embarking a boycott of classes until our demands are fulfilled. We demand a reversal of the increase. The students demand that the school fees portal should be shut down within 24 hours until our demands were met,” they said.

The union leaders urged students to make use of social media platfprms to mobilise others, using the hashtags #UIFEESMUSTFALL and #SAVEUITES, until their demands are met.

The governing council of the university on Thursday, approved the increment in school fees of students of the university from 100 to 400 level and also fixed deadline for payment.

In a statement signed by the Registrar and secretary to the council, G.O. Saliu and available to UCJUI, the decision was reached at the inaugural meeting of the council held earlier on Thursday and it considered the new levy as recommended by the Senate of the University.

Students who have not yet completed their registration, the council said,  were advised to do so on or before Sept. 4.

“Consequently, students who are yet to pay and complete their registration exercises are advised to do so, on or before Sept.  4, to enable departments download lists of registered students, in preparation for the First Semester Examination,” the release read in part.

Additionally, the council urged students to take advantage of financial aids such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and various scholarships offered by the University and other benefactors to assist indigent students.

The council also made it clear that there would be no extension of the registration deadline, as the portal will be closed after the specified date.

“Council equally directed that students be encouraged to take advantage of the students’ loan fund (NELFUND) and sundry scholarships instituted by the University and other weil-meaning philanthropists, to cater for indigent students.

“Above is for strict adherence as the portal will not be opened after the deadline,” the released further clarified.

Deadline for the payment of school fees was initially suspended, following the July protest.

  • SSANU, NASU strike plunges UI into darkness

SSANU, NASU strike plunges UI into darkness

The University of Ibadan (UI) has been plunged into total darkness following the non-teaching staff unions’ strike.

The strike was embarked upon on Monday by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) as directed by their national bodies.

Speaking with NAN on Tuesday on the effects of the strike, the Chairman, SSANU, UI, Mr Rasak Omisore, said the union was forced to down tools to press home their demands.

He said their agitations included unpaid four months’ salaries and funding of the universities, both at the federal and state levels.

Omisore added that there would be no meaningful development in Nigeria if the funding of education took the back seat.

“We are also talking about the constitution of governing councils for all the universities where their councils have been dissolved, as the importance of councils in universities cannot be underestimated.

“We are expecting the Federal Government to invite the national council of our union to address the issues of our demands,” Omisore said.

He said almost all the offices in the university were locked with members of staff in the administrative offices not on duty.

“Yes, you see students on campus, and they are receiving their lectures because ASUU is not on strike, but the works and maintenance department is a very vital part of the university as there has neither been light nor water due to the strike.

“Establishment offices are not working and Jaja is on skeletal duty,” the chairman said.

Meanwhile, the leadership of UI Students’ Union, led by its President, Tobiloba Samuel, says it has met with SSANU to plead for the restoration of power in the hostels.

Samuel, in an interview with NAN, called on the government to accede to the demands of the unions as students bear the brunt of the faceoff.

“We have to come to the understanding that every member of the university community is very important and if the teaching staff, the non-teaching staff, and the students are not at the optimum level, we cannot have the effective academic environment that we need.

“For the last 24 hours, students have been in great distress. We have not had light in 24 hours; meaning there is no water; amenities are not working, and some lecture halls are not open.

“We are calling on them to do the needful to ensure that peace returns to our various campuses and not just the University of Ibadan,” Samuel said.

He says the students stand in solidarity with the unions because the fight for a better education system is everybody’s business.

Some of the students told NAN that they were receiving lectures and writing tests with lecturers making use of alternative classes like the postgraduate classrooms.

However, the leadership and members of the unions enforced the strike at the UI maintenance department, the staff school, and the postgraduate school.

Also, some gates serving as shorter routes, especially for the hostels, were closed, thus making the students to travel longer distances.

The use of lecture halls, toilets, and other faculty facilities was also affected by the strike.

Students of University of Ibadan (UI), Oyo State, have emerged winner of the maiden hackathon organised by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).

The results of the hackathon were announced at the anniversary dinner and awards night of the NDPC in Abuja.

The hackathon, which took place on Friday, was part of the activities to mark the National Data Privacy Week celebrated between Jan. 28 and Feb. 4.

The hackathon is targeted at students with an aimed to finding indigenous solutions that can help in the implementation of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA).

It was signed on June 12, 2023, by President Bola Tinubu, and the act established the powers of the commission to ensuring compliance of organisations, protection of citizens’ data to avoid breaches, among other concerns.

The hackathon began on Jan. 8 with over 100 applications from tertiary institutions across the country.

Three teams emerged, including Nile University students, Team Cognito, University of Abuja students, Team Liitee and UI students, Team Privalon.

Each of the teams during the hackathon on Friday presented their pitches on how their solutions could address the need of NDPA implementation.

Team Privalon presented a solution `ChainVote’, which was meant to address the challenges of identity management and discrepancies in the voting system.

Team Privalon eventually won the hackathon with a prize award of N750,000, while Nile University students came second with N500,000 cash award and University of Abuja students emerged third with N250,000.

Mr Halleluyah Oludele, Team Lead for Privalon, said they were motivated on working on the solution and were delighted at winning.

Not undermining the efforts of other teams, Oludele commended the federal government initiative, noting that youths in the country are highly skilled and have the capacity to proffer ideas on national issues.

He said their solution could be applied in any sector which could help in decentralising data for easy service delivery.

The Nigeria Computer Society, ISACA Abuja Chapter and Innov8 Tech Hub Abuja collaborated with NDPC to host the hackathon.

The students were offered free membership into ISACA, Abuja chapter, where they would receive mentorship on how to develop further their ideas.

UI undergraduate student nabbed for allegedly raping a fresher

An undergraduate of the University of Ibadan name withheld has been nabbed  by the institution’s security personnel for reportedly raping a 100-level colleague within the campus.

The alleged rapist is a 200-level student of the Faculty of Law.

It was  gathered that the student had been reported to the authorities of the institution for committing the crime against the student who is said to be a fresher.

It was further learned that the lady had gone to a night class alongside some other girls in preparation for their examination.

The victim was said to have moved away from the lecture theatre where she was reading due to power failure to take a nap at the Students’ Union building where the suspect reportedly raped her.
While narrating her ordeal, the victim said she woke up at a touch and attempted to scream but the suspect held her neck down and rendered her voiceless.

She said that luck shone on her when a student walked in and the suspect fled.

The victim, however, sustained injuries on her neck, lips (due to a bite) and her private part.

In her reaction, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mrs Joke Akinpelu, confirmed the incident, saying that investigations had begun on the matter.

She stated that the act was reported to the Dean of Students Affairs, adding that he had since swung into action.

“The veracity of the allegation will be known upon completion of the investigation,” she added.

The management of the University of Ibadan (UI) has issued a stern warning to members of the public not to allow themselves to be swindled or scammed by some unknown criminals.

The University issued this warning on Thursday, August 17.

In a statement signed by Adejoke Akinpelu, Principal Assistant Registrar and Public Relations Officer, the institution said that no property has been put on sale.

She was very furious to know that some persons put some properties for sale online without the institution endorsing or knowing anything about it.

She added that the management of the university expressed dismay at an online sale advertisement announcing the sale of the property, assets, and land of the institution.

  • Arrest killers of Prof. Ajewole – ASUU to Tinubu, IGP

Arrest killers of Prof. Ajewole – ASUU to Tinubu, IGP

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan (UI) Chapter, has urged the Inspector General of Police, Alkali Baba, to assist the Oyo State Police Command with all logistics needed to unravel and arrest the killers of Prof. Opeyemi Ajewole.

This is contained in a release signed by the Chairman, UI Chapter of ASUU, Prof. Ayo Akinwole in Ibadan on Thursday.

Ajewole, until he was killed, was a lecturer in the Department of Social and Environmental Forestry Development

Ajewole was gruesomely gunned down by yet-to-be-identified assailants in the evening of Monday, 5 June 2023, in Ibadan.

The union has implored President Bola Tinubu to take passionate interest and ensure the security system unmasks the faces behind the murder of the professor.

“The heart of every ASUU-UI member is bleeding so profusely as if pierced by swords.

“Our bones shook so tremendously as if our marrows were naked in the tundra region.

“We condemn in totality the gruesome murder of our comrade, Prof. Opeyemi Ajewole and charge the security operatives to track down and apprehend the perpetrators of this dastardly act, with a view to unraveling the motive behind the incident, as well as bringing the perpetrators to book,” UI ASUU Chairman said.

According to Akinwole, the only tribute which the death of Ajewole deserves is that his killers are brought to justice and that Nigerians’ lives should matter to the Tinubu presidency

He noted that “Prof. Ajewole’s gruesome murder again reminded us of how valueless human lives had become in our clime“.

The ASUU chief maintained that “death lurks in all imaginable and unimaginable corners of this country and comes cheaply.

“The Nigerian populace is constantly assailed by terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, assassination, hunger, unemployment, and many more insidious exterminators of our individual and collective dreams.

“The situation of the Nigerian academics is even doubly precarious; they are prophets without any honour at home,“ he said.

Akinwole said that despite the immense contributions to national growth and development and recognition in the international circle, Nigerian academia is scorned and shabbily treated at home.

`It is, therefore, disheartening that academics who cultivate, preserve, and disseminate knowledge for the advancement and development of the society will become victims of societal malady to such an extent as to be targeted for elimination.

“The union wishes to use this teary occasion of Prof. Ajewole’s sudden death to call on the Nigerian state to resolutely tackle the problem of insecurity in the country, apprehend the killers of Prof. Ajewole and punish them most appropriately,“ the ASUU boss said.
