BREAKING: Trump tested for Coronavirus, says no results yet

President Trump said Saturday that he has taken the test to determine whether he contracted the new strain of the coronavirus and was awaiting the results.

He made the announcement at a White House news conference as his administration announced it was expanding European travel restrictions to the United Kingdom and Ireland. The ban is scheduled to go into effect on Monday at midnight, although U.S. citizens will be allowed to return to the country. Britain had been exempted from a previously announced travel ban.

Trump also said he was considering whether to implement limitations on domestic travel, “specifically from certain areas,” although he did not name any.

“If you don’t have to travel, I wouldn’t do it,” he said. “We want this thing to end. We don’t want a lot of people getting infected.”

The president’s decision to get tested came after a back-and-forth over whether he should take such a step. Last weekend, Trump came into contact with two Brazilian officials at his Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago, who later reportedly tested positive for the virus.

On Friday afternoon, Trump said he would “most likely” get tested. But hours later the White House released a letter from his physician saying it was not necessary because Trump is “low risk.”

The president said Saturday at a news conference with top administration officials that he decided to move forward anyway.

“I also took the test last night,” Trump said. “I decided I should based on the press conference last night.”

Although the results were not yet available, Trump said he had his temperature checked shortly before stepping in front of the podium and it was “totally normal.”

The issue has become increasingly controversial as Trump has tried to downplay the threat of the virus even as many people around him have reported exposure. Any doubt about a president’s health can rattle the public and the financial markets, which are already badly shaken by the pandemic.

Sean P. Conley, a Navy commander and osteopathic doctor assigned to the president, wrote in his letter that Trump, while dining with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro at Mar-a-Lago last weekend “briefly came into contact with an individual who 3 days later began showing symptoms and was subsequently confirmed to have COVID-19.” The letter says Trump shook hands and took a picture with the person, separately reported as Brazilian press secretary Fabio Wajngarten.

The letter says that on Friday evening the administration learned of a second dinner guest who shared a table with Trump, “who was symptom-free until this morning,” and has now tested positive. The Brazilian Embassy reported that the person is Nestor Forster, Brazil’s acting ambassador to the United States.

Trump has sent mixed messages about the new virus, alternately telling people to remain calm, that the country soon would be free of the threat, and then on Friday declaring a national state of emergency. During a news conference announcing the declaration, he shook hands with several of the officials who shared the platform with him, despite official guidance to avoid such germ-spreading behavior.

Several Republican members of Congress as well as Trump’s incoming chief of staff, Mark Meadows, decided to self-quarantine after attending the Conservative Political Action Conference, where they interacted with a person known to be infected. Trump also spoke at the conference, held two weeks ago.

Trump was asked about his own exposure to the virus during the news conference Friday. At first, he dismissed the risk.

“I take pictures and it lasts for, literally, seconds,” he said. “I don’t know the gentleman that we’re talking about” who tested positive.

“I think they have to listen to their doctors, and I think they shouldn’t be jumping to get the test unless it’s necessary,” he said.

Later, when asked if he was “being selfish by not getting tested and potentially exposing” others, Trump shifted course, saying he would “most likely” get tested “fairly soon.”

  • 60-year-old Nigerian serial rapist pastor jailed 34 years in UK

60-year-old Nigerian serial rapist pastor jailed 34 years in UK

A Nigerian pastor, Michael Oluronbi, has been jailed for 34 years in the United Kingdom for defiling children and sexual assault.

A Birmingham Crown Court handed down the sentence after he was found guilty of the offence.

Oluronbi, 60 was convicted of raping some children for a period of 20 years. He was said to have committed the act during religious bathing rituals he claimed would wash their sins away and cleanse them from evil spirits.

His wife Juliana Oluronbi, who arranged abortions after four girls became pregnant, was jailed for 11 years.

Both were found guilty by jurors at Birmingham Crown Court after a trial in January, BBC reports.

The trial heard Oluronbi had victims stand naked in a bowl of water to undergo what he called “spiritual bathing”.

He claimed it would cleanse their souls and protect them from the devil.

But Philip Bradley QC, prosecuting, told the trial Oluronbi’s true purpose “was to serve his sexual gratification”.

In some cases, he added, the offending “progressed to repeated rapes, on many occasions leading to unwanted pregnancies and terminations”.

Oluronbi was arrested at Birmingham Airport last May, while trying to leave the country for Nigeria.

The defendant, of Orchard Drive, Longbridge, told police “the devil made me do it” after his arrest.

Judge Sarah Buckingham, sentencing, said Oluronbi’s crimes “must be one of the worst cases of sexual abuse of multiple children to come before the courts”.

“You did this because you are an arrogant, selfish and vain man,” she said.

In statements read to the court one of the victims, now in her thirties, said Oluronbi had “taken my innocence, my youth and my purity as a child”.

Another said: “I used to eat soap until I was physically sick so I could get rid of this man’s mark on me inside and out”.

A third woman said she no longer attended church.

“I don’t think I can ever place my faith in religion again. I trusted him”, she said, “because he was like God on earth.”

Nigerian email fraud syndicate jailed in UK [Full Identities Attached]

Some Nigerians, part of a criminal gang, have been convicted and jailed for a combined total of 18 years and 2 months after gaining access to as many as 2,000 BT customers’ accounts in an elaborate phone and email divert scam.

The convicts who were busted after a complex investigation which spanned more than two years, were arraigned in court by Hampshire Constabulary’s Economic Crime Unit for the crime which was committed between May 2014 and July 2016.

The Economic Crime Unit uncovered £358,345 in losses, but the full extent of the fraud is expected to be much higher. Portsmouth Crown Court heard the gang spent the money on Rolex watches, high-value jewellery, TVs and designer clothes.

PSI Stephen Murden, from the Economic Crime Unit said: “With the assistance of data from PayPal our investigation was able to link fraudulent orders and deliveries to some of the defendants’ addresses.

“We obtained evidence from BT customers, retailers and from phones and computers seized during the initial investigation. Analysis of the devices seized together with the other evidence obtained enabled us to bring the case to court.

“We determined that PayPal saw a loss of £205,000, and customers and merchants lost £87,000. However, we believe the true extent of the fraud was not restricted to PayPal or the addresses identified and the overall gain to some of the defendants was likely to be much higher than the amounts identified.

“The information we gathered proved that there was sufficient evidence to bring all eight defendants to court for charges of conspiracy in relation to this sophisticated scam. I am pleased that the hard work that went into this lengthy, complex investigation resulted in all eight individuals pleading guilty.”

Upon being arrested during a raid, the gang’s leader 36-year-old Festus Emosivwe chewed a USB data stick, making it impossible to recover any data.

Judge Timothy Mousley QC who presided over the case said; “The impact on your victims cannot be underestimated. Many had seriously heightened levels of anxiety, stress and fear after finding out their accounts had been hacked.

“Some expressed horror and fury at being scammed by you.

“Many were retired people who feared they’d be unable to get by financially. Each of you is responsible for inflicting that misery upon them.”

    The gang members who pleaded guilty to all the charges, were sentenced as follows;

*Festus Emosivwe, 36, of Newcome Road, Portsmouth, was jailed for 44 months for conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation.

*Chloe Maylott, 27, of Purbrook Way, Havant, was jailed for 16 months for conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation.

*Charles Onwu, 31, of Wells Close, Portsmouth, was jailed for 43 months for conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation

*Victor Ngo, 30, of Lowestoft Road, Portsmouth, was jailed for 43 months for conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation and conspiracy to convert criminal property.

*Pinelopi Chatzikonstantinou, 30, formerly of Highlands Road, Southsea, was fined £1,000 and a £100 victim surcharge for conspiracy to convert criminal property.
Adel Qadir, 35, of Woofferton Road, Portsmouth, was jailed for 29 months for conspiracy to commit

    *fraud by false representation.

*Molade Fasuyi, 37, of Methuen Road, Southsea, was jailed for two years for committing fraud by false representation.

*Olukayode Adepoju, 40, of London Road, Portsmouth, was jailed for 19 months for conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation.

  • Presidency clears air on Buhari’s alleged 20-day trip to UK

The presidency has issued a red alert about purveyors of fake and concocted news who it said are on overdrive, spreading all manners of fake news about President Buhari and his family.

Presidential adviser, Femi Adesina urged Nigerians to be careful about what they consume as news, and also share with others, particularly from the social media.

One of the news stories making the rounds, he said was Buhari’s planned 20-day visit to the UK.

“An unfounded information has been making the rounds that President Muhammadu Buhari is billed to travel to the United Kingdom for 20 days, and from there proceed to Saudi Arabia, and then Austria. Fake. It is nothing but falsehood from mischievous minds.

“Members of the First Family, Ministers, top government officials, the military, and other key institutions, are equally objects of this orchestrated falsehood, coming from enemies of national cohesion.

“We urge Nigerians to be discriminatory about what they accept as credible information, and restrain themselves from sharing what they have not authenticated as genuine. That is how we can all collectively beat the malevolent minds at their pernicious games”.

  • Reluctant divorcee, UK, claims to be happy – Owei Lakemfa

    By Owei Lakemfa.

Old United Kingdom (UK) tonight, walks through the gates of divorce 47 years after saying ‘I do’ to the European Union (EU). Feigning happiness that it is once again single and eligible, and in fact, looking for multi partners, the UK Plans a clock count down to the 23 GMT divorce hour which will be projected on to No. 10 Downing Street while subdued revelers are hosting a celebration in Parliament Square where flagpoles will fly the union jack. Also, a commemorative Brexit 50p coin with the words: “peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations” is expected to be released.

These however will be a far cry from the huge celebrations including candle light processions that marked the marriage when the country signed the dotted lines in Brussels vowing to hold and cherish the EU until death do them part. At that January 1, 1973 union, the UK had a huge bridal train including representatives of its political spectrum led by then Prime Minister Edward Heath supported by his predecessors Harold Macmillan and Alec Douglas-Home.

This time, the UK is a less confident, divided and broken country with an uncertain future. Even after serving its divorce papers in 2016,triggering it off on March 29, 2017 and deciding to leave inexactly two years later, the now less elegant UK, showed a lot of reluctance to leave the matrimonial home for the ‘free market’ where it hopes to show case its natural and acquired assets. Even before today, UK had made flirtatious moves to the United States, its former colonies in Africa, and let it be known to its old lover, the EU that it still wants to maintain a warm filial relationship.

There were no pre-nuptial agreements so despite today’s official divorce, the UK and EU still have a transition period of eleven months to work out the divorce details. These will be on trade and non-trade issues like education, data, security, intelligence, aviation, culture, research and fisheries.

In the post-divorce negotiations, the UK would hope for free-tariff and quota-free links and the upholding of no checking of goods understanding with Ireland. With the divorce, the UK’s 73 Members of the European Parliament will be sent home if they have not voluntarily returned, and it will during the transition period continue to obey all EU rules without having any say in making those rules.

However, the post-divorce negotiations will not witness the drama of parliamentary debates and votes that attended Brexit because the parliament’s involvement in approving the negotiations has been removed; its scrutiny is now reduced to ministerial briefs. There is the possibility of the negotiations dragging beyond this year which will require UK asking for an extension. However, Boris Johnson has ruled this out. This gives room for a possible no deal scenario.

There had been two catastrophic European wars styled as ‘The First World War’ which ran from 1914 to 1918 and ‘The Second World War” from 1940 to 1945 in which Europe and its allies destroyed not just most of itself, but also parts of the world. The idea arose that if Europe were to form a union, the likelihood of a Third World War, would be highly reduced.

UK war-time Prime Minister Winston Churchill in a September 19, 1946 speech at the University of Zurich, Switzerland told Europe: “We must build a kind of United States of Europe. In this way only will hundreds of millions of toilers be able to regain the simple joys and hopes which make life worth living.”

To achieve peace, by 1950, the European Coal and Steel Community began a form of European Union. When after years of negotiations, the Treaty Of Rome to unite Europe was signed in 1957, UK opted out arguing that it would affect its relations with its Commonwealth countries and that in any case, it desired: ‘one-world economic system’ with the pound as a central currency. So, six countries, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg were left to sign what became the European Economic Community, later renamed the European Union.

Within four years, the UK changed its mind and decided to join the EU marriage, but was rejected. It was again rejected in 1967 principally by French President Charles de Gaulle who vetoed it. He argued the UK was not a good and fit person for the marriage and that it will not be faithful as it was in a romantic relationship with the United States which was allegedly using the UK as a Trojan Horse to penetrate the EU. However, when Georges Pompidou succeeded de Gaulle, France withdrew is objections and the UK-EU marriage was consummated.

The UK proved to be an unreliable, if not unfaithful partner. Within two years it was already contemplating a divorce; it put this to a 1975 referendum, but 67.2 percent said it should remain in the marriage.

When on January 1, 1999 the EU adopted a single currency and exactly three years later, floated the Euro, the UK refused to be part of it. It decided to maintain its currency backed by its reserves. So it secured an opt-out.

Also, when the EU signed the Schengen Agreement on June 14, 1985 which abolished border controls between member states and introduced a single visa policy, the Schengen, effective March 26, 1995, the UK opted out.

Even with the arrangements it had accepted such as free movement or migration of EU citizens, it began leaning towards discriminating against those from Eastern Europe.

While the EU tried to tolerate the UK and make the marriage work even if it meant bending over backwards to accommodate it, the latter remained dissatisfied, even complaining about its financial contributions to the marriage.

Grumbling UK went for a second referendum in 2016 whether to remain or seek a divorce. This time, 51.9 percent voted for a divorce. Then, uncertainty and self-doubt set in. The divorce, called Brexit which had consumed two Prime Ministers, David Cameron and Theresa May, also threatened to consume their successor, Boris Johnson. But the UK decided to take the leap of fate with or without a negotiated exit.

So when tomorrow comes, the single parent UK will be facing a new future; one it did not really plan for but would have to live with. For the EU, I am sure it has gotten tired of the divorce proceedings and its aftermath; the earlier it sorts out the details and moves on, the better. As for us Africans, I think we should be smart enough to know that in the wake of its divorce, and search for new markets, new partners and places to exploit as it did in pre-colonial times, the UK has our continent fully in its sight.

  • Imo Verdict: PDP petitions US, UK, EU

Following a protest led by its chairman, Uche Secondus to the US embassy and the UK high commission in Abuja, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has written a petition to the United Kingdom, United States and the European Union over Emeka Ihedioha’s loss at the Supreme Court to Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress.

The protest which took place on Friday had in attendance the Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe; former President of the Senate, Adolphus Wabara; former Imo State governor, Chief Achike Udenwa, as well as members of the National Working Committee (NWC) calling on the apex court its judgemt which sacked Emeka Ihedioha as governor of Imo State.

In its petition titled ‘Perversion of Justice: Deliberate Efforts At Truncating Democracy in Nigeria,’ the PDP alleged that Nigeria’s democracy is in danger as the judiciary has been compromised by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to pervert justice in its favour.

The PDP who called for a review of the court judgement, accused the Supreme Court of declaring additional votes (beyond the official number of accredited voters) from 388 polling units which was not certified by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The petition reads in part; “You may recall that our party, the PDP, the leading opposition party in Nigeria, has been raising issues regarding the continuous interference and arm-twisting of the judiciary by the executive arm and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to influence the outcome of election petitions in various courts, annul elections won by our party and transfer victory to the APC.

“Your Excellency, it may have come to your notice that there have been serious protests in various states of our nation threatening the stability of our nation over a recent judgment of the Supreme Court.

“It is instructive to inform you that this perversion of justice has already sparked off protests in various parts of our country and has become a clear threat to peace, unity and stability of our nation and the survival of our democracy.

“We rejected the judgment with clear call for a judicial review and ultimate reversal of the judgment by the Supreme Court.

“Nigerians had been at a shock over the voiding of the lawful election of Ihedioha, who scored 276,404 votes and awarding fictitious votes to declare Hope Uzodimma of the APC, who scored 96, 458 votes as governor of Imo State that the Supreme Court voided.

“The Supreme Court declared additional votes (beyond the official number of accredited voters) from 388 polling units, not certified by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and donated same to the APC and its candidate to declare them winners. It added that the action of the Justice Tanko-led Supreme Court raises very serious issues about miscarriage of justice against the party and democratic order.

“The same Supreme Court in the most celebrated case of Atiku V Buhari & Ors, decided that for a petitioner to succeed in an allegation of infraction of any provision of the Electoral Act especially one complaining about malpractice, such as wrongful exclusion of votes, the petitioner must call witnesses polling unit by polling unit.

“However in this case, the same Supreme Court was not presented any witness from Uzodinma/APC from the fictitious 388 polling units from where the court allocated votes to him. Does the Supreme Court have powers to formulate and allocate votes as election results?

“The so-called results from the 388 polling units were rightfully rejected, in line with several decisions of the Supreme Court, by the tribunal and Court of Appeal as it was merely dumped on the tribunal in a bag, by a policeman who had no mandate of the police to testify at the tribunal.

“The tribunal did not even open the bag as there was no basis to do so. It is one of the great wonders of the world how the Supreme Court opened the bag, counted the results and added them to only the APC candidate.

“What is more perplexing is the fact that INEC produced a schedule of reasons why results were not produced from the 388 units.

“Indeed, election did not even take place in most of the units for one reason or another, like violence among others and so no result could possibly be obtained from those units. The results were not merely rejected or cancelled by INEC.

“Moreover, your Excellency, nobody is aware of the number of votes scored by each party from the said 388 polling units. The tribunal or Court of Appeal did not mention or ascribe any figure from the units to any party in their decisions.

“In fact, during the cross examination of the APC candidate, Senator Hope Uzodinma, he could not read any figure from the said results. He said that the figures were not clear. lt therefore beats the imagination where the Supreme Court conjured and manufactured the figures it used in declaring Uzodinma/ APC as duly elected?” the party stated.

“It drew the countries attention to the Supreme Court decision in Buhari v. INEC (2008); which says that “weight can hardly be attached to a document tendered in evidence by a witness who cannot or is not in a position to answer questions on the document. “One of such persons the law identifies is the one who did not make the document. Such a person is adjudged in the eyes of the law as ignorant of the content of the document.

“The question is; can the Supreme Court sit in Abuja on January 14, 2020, to increase the total number of accredited votes in election held in Imo State on March 9, 2019? “Is there any law, which permits the Supreme Court or anyone else for that matter, to unilaterally increase the total accredited votes by any margin after the accreditation and or the election?

“Where did the Supreme Court get the numbers to declare Uzodinma/APC from a paltry 96,456 votes over Ihedioha/ PDP votes of 276,404?

“Even if all the excess accredited votes of 127,209 manufactured by the Supreme Court were added to Uzodinma/APC it will be 223, 657 votes, still less than Ihedioha’s votes of 276,494 by 42,747 votes,” the party said.

According to the PDP, the Supreme Court, as presently constituted under Justice Mohammed Tanko, has lost its credibility and no longer commands the respect and confidence of Nigerians, adding that if the people no longer repose confidence in the Supreme Court, the nation’s democracy, national cohesion and stability were at great risk. It called on the United States of America and the international community to take more than a passing glance to this issue in order to avoid an imminent breakdown of law and order.

“Our demand is that Justice Tanko Mohammed immediately steps down as CJN and chairman of the National Judicial Council as Nigerians have lost confidence in him and a Supreme Court under his leadership.

“Anything short than this is a direct invitation to anarchy chaos and a huge threat to our democracy and the corporate existence of our nation.”

PDP’s national chairman, Uche secondus also called for the resignation of President Buhari, while being led into the US embassy by PDP foreign liaison officer.

He stated that President Muhammadu Buhari has lost control of security situation in the country.

He said; “Our nation is in danger. We are in pain and we are in trouble. We back our minority leader asking and demanding that Buhari should resign because he has lost control absolutely.

“It is not time for propaganda and it is not time for the Presidency to respond to issues that are very sensitive and germane for the foundation of our country.

“When we speak, you see one of them responding but they have left the main issue. The issue is that our people are dying and are in hunger. You cannot travel from Abuja to Kaduna, you cannot go to Minna. You cannot go on road. All over the country, insecurity and killings are too much and overwhelming.

“We believe that the president has lost control. The international community should come quickly to the aid of Nigeria. We have the highest IDP in Africa today, and yet we are not at war. That is the mission why we are here.”

  • Brexit: UK finally leaves the European Union

Brexit: UK finally leaves the European Union

Prime Minister Boris Johnson hailed an “astonishing moment” as Britain formally left the European Union (EU) after 47 years on Friday, saying his government had “obeyed the people” who voted for Brexit in a 2016 referendum.

“For many people this is an astonishing moment of hope, a moment they thought would never come,” Johnson said in a recorded speech.

The speech was broadcast via his Facebook account one hour before Brexit became official at 11 pm (2300 GMT), or midnight in Brussels.

“And there are many of course who feel a sense of anxiety and loss,” Johnson added.

“And then of course there is a third group – perhaps the biggest – who had started to worry that the whole political wrangle would never come to an end.

“We have obeyed the people [who voted for Brexit in a 2016 referendum,” he said, adding: “We have taken back the tools of self-government.”

Johnson and the European Union’s top officials earlier pointed to new opportunities ahead after Brexit.

Thousands of eurosceptics gathered to celebrate Brexit Day in London and other cities, rivalled by smaller groups of pro-EU activists in some areas, but most British people were not expected to mark the date.

A light show and other events organized by Johnson’s Conservative government at Downing Street was outshone by a nearby “Brexit Celebration: Countdown to freedom” event fronted by veteran eurosceptic and Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage in London’s Parliament Square.

In Brussels earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Charles Michel and European Parliament President David Sassoli said Saturday would mark a “new dawn for Europe.

The bloc’s remaining 27 member sates will “continue to join forces and build a common future,” they wrote in an op-ed for several European newspapers.

Leaders across Europe expressed similar sentiments.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Brexit was a “deep cut for us all” but underlined that the remaining EU members would continue to do everything necessary to move forward.

Brexit is “a historic alarm signal that must sound in all our countries, that must be heard by all of Europe and make us reflect,” French President Emmanuel Macron said.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar expressed his thanks for the “enormous solidarity from our European partners.” His country, which shares a land border with Britain in Northern Ireland, is the EU state likely to be most affected by Brexit.

“Today is a very sad day. People in the north did not consent to Brexit,” Mary Lou McDonald, leader of Irish republican party Sinn Fein, said as she joined a border protest.

“This is not something that people on the island of Ireland want, bar a small minority,” McDonald said.

After Brexit, little will change in practice during an 11-month transitional phase, as the two sides seek to negotiate a future relationship spanning trade, security and political cooperation.

Officials in Brussels warn that the timeline is extremely ambitious, but Johnson has ruled out an extension.

Fifty-two per cent of voters across the United Kingdom chose Brexit in 2016, but there were majorities for remaining in the EU in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon, who leads the devolved regional government, insisted on Friday that Scotland is being withdrawn from the EU against its will. She demanded a referendum on independence.

Opinion polls suggest that 53 per cent of people across the United Kingdom now support the country remaining in the EU, said John Curtice, a political scientist at the University of Strathclyde.

Johnson’s predecessor, Theresa May, was among the many Conservatives who welcomed Brexit Day.

“After more than three years, we can finally say that we have delivered on the result of the 2016 referendum and have kept faith with the British people,” tweeted May, who resigned after lawmakers had rejected her Brexit deal three times.

Opposition Labour lawmaker David Lammy said Brexit was a “national tragedy.”

“I oppose it today for the same reasons I have always opposed it,” Lammy wrote. “Brexit is a con. A trick. A swindle. A fraud.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived in London, the United Kingdom, ahead of the inaugural UK-Africa Investment Summit holding on Monday, January 20th, 2020.

The President’s Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, revealed that Buhari arrived in the United Kingdom at about 1: 00 am on Saturday.

The UK-Africa Investment Summit would be hosted by the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson.

According to the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the organizers said the event is expected to bring together African leaders, international business chief executives and heads of international organizations “to create new partnerships that will deliver more investments and jobs” to the benefit of people and businesses in African countries and the United Kingdom.

“Apart from highlighting new perspectives on UK-Africa Partnership for Prosperity, issues of Sustainable Finance and Infrastructure; Trade and Investment; Future African Growth Sectors and Clean Energy and Climate, are expected to dominate presentations and discussions during the Summit.

“With the expected take-off of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in mid-2020, the London investment summit will provide Nigeria with the opportunity to project itself as a leading investment destination for new industries.

“In addition, the summit will deepen Nigeria-United Kingdom investment ties post-Brexit given that Africa currently represents just two percent of British trade activity, with Nigeria accounting for only 10 percent of that total.”

While in the United Kingdom, the presidential aide also said, Buhari will meet with the Head of the Commonwealth, Prince Charles in Glasgow, Scotland.

  • UK makes new move to frustrate return of Ibori’s loot to Nigeria

A Fresh legal attempt has been launched on Thursday by British prosecutors to confiscate tens of millions of pounds stolen from Delta State by the then state governor, James Ibori.

Ibori who was governor from 1999 to 2007 had pleaded guilty to 10-count charges of laundering of state funds in Britain and had received a 13-year jail sentence of which he served in pre- and post-trial detention.

Although he was released from jail in December 2016 and is now back in Nigeria, it seems he might lose everything to the United Kingdom and the Nigerian government.

According to Jonathan Kinnear, prosecution counsel at Southwark Crown Court who had listed assets that Britain seeks to confiscate from Ibori and return to Nigerian public funds, “only a portion of the 117 million pounds ($153 million) proceeds from his crime is likely to be recoverable.”

Earlier in 2013, a first attempt was made in Britain to confiscate his assets, however, it was aborted weeks later due to unresolved legal disputes.

As a governor in the oil-rich state, Ibori, 57 amassed a portfolio of luxury properties in Nigeria, London, Washington, Houston, and Johannesburg and traveled all over the world, staying in the most expensive hotels and spending lavishly in luxury stores.

Reuters also reported that Ibori had been previously convicted of theft after he was caught trying to steal from chain Wickes in London as a shop assistant during his younger years.

The new case is expected to last about four weeks.
