Biden accuses Putin of aiming to destroy Ukraine’s identity

U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday accused President Vladimir Putin of Russia of trying to destroy Ukraine’s identity.

According to Biden, this is as witnessed by Russian bombardments of civilian targets such as schools, hospitals, daycare centres and museums.

“I believe what Putin is attempting to do is to eliminate the identity of Ukraine.

“He can’t occupy it, but he can try to destroy its identity,’’ Biden said in Tokyo.

Biden said that Putin must pay a dear price for his barbarism in Ukraine,’’ in order to deter others from taking similar action, in reference to military tensions around Taiwan.

He was speaking at a joint news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

  • Jokers in Power! – By Hope Eghagha

Jokers in Power! – By Hope Eghagha

The rulers of Nigeria are jokers. Not comedians. Comedians can and often do positive things. Jokers don’t; they can’t. Ali Baba, Gordons, I go dye, Basket Mouth and Okey Bakassi could make you laugh, shed tears, and forget your sorrows. Of course, you would feel good after the dose of comedy. Besides, an erstwhile comedian in Ukraine has taught the world how to govern, how to be tenacious, to be inspiring, both at peace time and when a country is at war. He has become a hero overnight. He will never be forgotten in the story of resistance. He did not flee the country to deliver speeches from exile. He stood like a soldier.

I am very sure that if Boko Haram miscreants were to attack Abuja, all the jokers masquerading as rulers would scamper out of Nigeria, away to Europe and America, perhaps disguised as persons of the opposite sex! Already, several of them cannot visit their hometowns and villages. The other day, those scoundrels attacked the home state of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and kidnapped a traditional ruler!

Abuja is a composition of jokers in the corridors of power. They may look serious. But they are indeed jokers. They are joking with the destiny and lives of millions of hapless citizens. I wonder if Aliko Dangote or Tony Elumelu or Femi Otedola would agree to hire those jokers as managers in their businesses! Certainly, a serious business concern like MTN will not hire these jokers to conduct business on their behalf. A joker is ‘someone who likes telling funny stories or doing stupid things to make people laugh’! How many of us watched the Frank Spencer serial? Frank was the joker in the comedy ‘Some Mothers Do have Them! Did I get the title right? Some countries do have them, can be used to develop a Sitcom of how Nigeria has wobbled in the last eight years! A joker could also refer to a ‘person who has done something that annoys you! As we all know, jokers are not to be taken seriously. Achebe refers to them as ‘efulefu!

Today I am going to play the joker by describing the jokes and jokers who bought Expression of Interest Forms in PDP and APC. The first joke was the cost of the form, fixed by a government that rode into power on the anti-corruption horseback! A whopping one hundred million naira! Someone did a quick math and concluded that the salary of the President for eight years will not sum up to one hundred million. We all thought it was a joke, we thought that only a few persons would cough out that amount of money to buy a worthless sheet of value, whose value was ascribed than earned. Alas, the joke was on us! A long queue soon grew from the ashes of greed and infantile optimism. Some who could not manage a Ministry opened loud mouths to proclaim aspiration to the Presidency. Labour and Productivity and Education ministers wanted to be President though under their watch all federal universities had been shut down for three months! In their wild thinking if a man as competent, sagacious, purpose-driven, healthy as the incumbent could ruin the country, who would doubt their own skills and energy since they did not spend weeks or months in London hospitals! So, our beloved President, Technical Conqueror of Boko Haram was their model.

Serving Ministers and a few legislators all filed out to ogle the national pie. Soon, it became clear that what the aspirants had fallen into was a bazaar to build a war chest for the forthcoming elections. The Executive branch of government attempted to scuttle the provision in the Electoral Act that could have made aspirants remain in office while jostling for power they know will not get to them! It failed. The greatest joker of them all was the CBN Governor! This man has been the only CBN governor to get a second term in the last thirty or so years. Not satisfied, while sitting atop the affairs of CBN he thought he could meddle into politics. Having exposed himself a card-carrying APC member he is the biggest joker of then all!

But the Joker was on them. After collecting osusu of one hundred million naira each, Baba Aso Rock told them to resign. See the rash of withdrawals! Including the controversial Attorney-General and Minister of Justice who had bought luxury cars for delegates and other political persons in his home state. He had set his eyes on Government House in Birnin Kebbi. Alas, he has had to shelve his dream.

While the APC hierarchy was dancing naked in the public square, PDP was swimming in a pool of self-delusion. It was announced that the man who flew PDP flag in 2015 had teleported to APC, and that Miyetti Allah had bought forms for him! He denied it. News came that he is still in PDP. Right now, Oga Joe escapes classification. PDP had preached zoning the Presidency to the south as a policy. Now, there is pussyfooting. The policy has somersaulted like a man struck with the notorious love juju ‘magun’ and opened the presidency for anybody! The price tag of Expression of Interest form was not as high as that of APC. You know, being outside government, they are not privy to the contents of the national honeypot. Yet, these are jokers? How did we land in this hot stew with fires as hot as hot can be?

How can anybody take these fellows, including their oga, seriously? The young people are watching askance at the men and women dancing in the public square. These are people who cannot manage a firm of three persons, now entrusted with the destiny of millions!

Sadly, these jokers are not making us laugh. They are making buckets of tears for millions of families. Let us tell them that the circus show should end. A new spirit should come down. To be sure, the jokers will not part with power without a fight. So, those who want the jokers out of power must rise to the occasion and use the ballot box to chase the baldheads of town!

U.S. government announces reopening of its embassy in Kiev

The U.S. government has reopened its embassy in Kiev, Ukraine, the State Department in Washington announced on Wednesday.

The embassy had closed its doors shortly before the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in late February

“As we take this momentous step, we have put forward additional measures to increase the safety of our colleagues who are returning to Kyiv and have enhanced our security measures and protocols,” a statement said, using an alternative spelling for the Ukrainian capital.

The war continued to cause death, destruction and displacement every day, the statement added, but stressed that the U.S remained “committed to confronting the challenges ahead.”

U.S. launches conflict monitor for Russian war on Ukraine

The U. S. has established a new conflict monitoring body which will be used to build legal cases against Russia for crimes committed during its war on Ukraine.

“The Conflict Observatory will ensure that crimes committed by Russia’s forces are documented and perpetrators are held accountable,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said as he announced the creation of the body.

He said the programme will capture, analyse, and make publicly available open-source information and evidence of atrocities, human rights abuses and harm to civilian infrastructure, including Ukraine’s cultural heritage.

“The reports will be posted on ConflictObservatory.org.”
The spokesperson said the observatory was a collaboration between scientists and the private sector.

He said goal is to contribute to eventual prosecutions in Ukraine’s domestic courts, courts in third-party countries, U.S. courts and other tribunals.
It will also provide information refuting Russian disinformation campaigns.

The program is a collaboration with geographic information systems company Esri, Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab, the Smithsonian Cultural Rescue Initiative and PlanetScape Ai, the State Department said, adding that future funding will come from the European Democratic Resilience Initiative.

UKRAINE WAR: India to reopen Embassy in Kyiv on May 17

The Indian government has said its Embassy in Ukraine would resume operation from Kyiv by May 17, 2022.

In a communique today, the foreign ministry said, “The Indian Embassy in Ukraine, which was temporarily operating out of Warsaw (Poland), Would be resuming its operation from Kyiv w.e.f 17 May 2022″.

The Indian embassy in Ukraine was shut after Russia invaded the former Soviet republic.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the embassy operations in the Ukraine Capital had shut down in early March after Russian shelling intensified days after the February 24 invasion.

On March 13, the embassy relocated to Warsaw after most Indian nationals were evacuated from Ukraine.

Several Western political leaders including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have recently visited Irpin and other residential areas around the Ukrainian capital, where Russian forces have been accused of killing hundreds of civilians.

Ukraine has said it will launch its first war crimes trial, bringing a 21-year-old Russian service member to the stand who allegedly shot down an unarmed 62-year-old civilian to stop him from serving as a witness to a carjacking.

WAR: UN reveals number of journalists killed in Ukraine

According to data made available by the United Nations Data department, nothing less than seven journalist covering the Russia-Ukraine war have been killed.

The UN also revealed that many are also being targeted and facing unprecedented danger while performing their duty since Russia launched its attack in February.

The report also showed that the last time such a number of journalists were killed was in 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea.

The alert from UN-appointed independent rights experts, including the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression, cited “numerous reports” that journalists have been “targeted”.

Reports had it that journalists have been tortured, kidnapped, attacked and killed, or refused safe passage from cities and regions under siege.

The rights experts, in a statement, stated that Russia’s war against Ukraine had been made easier by the “silencing of critical voices over a prolonged period of time’’.

They highlighted the blocking of social media platforms and news websites in Russia, and the disruption of foreign media services.

According to experts, Moscow’s “massive labelling” of independent media as “foreign agents” is a source of concern.

“We deplore the systematic crackdown on political opponents, independent journalists and the media, human rights activists, protesters and many others opposing the Russian government’s actions.

“All these measures amount to the creation of a state monopoly on information in blatant violation of Russia’s international obligations,” they stated.

The rights experts stressed that disinformation is also being spread about Ukraine in Russian State-owned media,

  • EU to suspend all duties on imports from Ukraine

EU to suspend all duties on imports from Ukraine

The European Commission has proposed suspending import duties on all Ukrainian exports to the European Union for one year.

The proposal, which the Commission termed “an unprecedented gesture of support for a country at war.’’

It would also see the suspension for one year of all EU anti-dumping and safeguard measures in place on Ukrainian steel exports.

It is designed to help boost Ukraine’s exports to the EU and help alleviate the difficult situation for Ukrainian producers and exporters in the face of Russia’s military invasion.

“The EU has never before delivered such trade liberalisation measures, which are unprecedented in their scale.

“Also granting Ukraine zero tariff, zero quota access to the EU market.’’

EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis said on Wednesday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke of “an important decision.’’

“Right now, this will allow us to maintain the economic activity in Ukraine, our national production as much as possible,’’ he added in a statement on Telegram.

The EU Parliament and the EU countries still have to approve the measure, and changes to the proposal were possible.

  • British defence minister backs Ukraine strikes on Russian sites

British defence minister backs Ukraine strikes on Russian sites

A British defence minister has backed Ukrainian strikes on military targets behind Russian lines, even if the weapons used had been supplied by Britain.

Armed Forces Minister James Heappey said on Tuesday that there was “every chance’’ that Moscow’s forces would be repelled with the support being supplied to Kiev by allies.

But he dismissed Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s claim that Western allies were pouring oil on the fire by providing Ukraine with firepower.

Heappey said of course Britain backed reported strikes on fuel depots in Russia.

He told Times Radio “it is completely legitimate for Ukraine to be targeting Russia’s depth in order to disrupt the logistics that if they weren’t disrupted will directly contribute to death and carnage on Ukrainian soil.’’

And the minister said it was not necessarily a problem if British-donated weapons were used to hit sites on Russian soil.

He said after accepting weapons being supplied by allies to Ukraine and they had the range to be used over borders.

“There are lots of countries around the world that operate kits that they have imported from other countries.

“When those bits of kit are used we tend not to blame the country that manufactured it, you blame the country that fired it,’’ he added.

The comments mark a further strengthening of Britain’s position, as allies shifted from caution against antagonising Russian President Vladimir Putin to supplying more and more lethal aid.

Lavrov had warned that the threat of nuclear conflict should not be underestimated.

He accused NATO forces of pouring oil on the fire by providing weapons, as he warned against provoking “World War III.’’

But Heappey told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that the chances of nuclear warfare were vanishingly small.

He told Lavrov to reflect on the reason there was a war in Ukraine was that Russia invaded, telling Sky News.

“All of this noise from Moscow about somehow their attack on Ukraine being a response to NATO aggression is just utter, utter nonsense.’’

Heappey had said there was every chance that the Ukrainians would see off the Russians in the invasion, arguing that Moscow’s victory in the east of Ukraine was not inevitable.

“We’ll see a conflict between two forces that are much more evenly balanced, where the Ukrainians have the advantage of defensive positions that have been dug in and prepared over the last eight years.

“And that’s going to make it an extraordinarily difficult nut for the Russians to crack.

“And with all the support that the Ukrainians are getting from around the world, there’s every chance the Ukrainians can see them off.’’

  • War: Russia warns U.S. against sending more arms to Ukraine

War: Russia warns U.S. against sending more arms to Ukraine

Russia on Monday warned U.S. against sending more arms to Ukraine.

The country’s ambassador to Washington warned that large Western deliveries of weapons were inflaming the conflict and would lead to more losses.

Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine has killed thousands of people, displaced millions more and raised fears of a wider confrontation between Russia and the U.S., by far the world’s two biggest nuclear powers.

The U.S. has ruled out sending its own or NATO forces to Ukraine but Washington and its European allies have supplied weapons to Kyiv such as drones, Howitzer heavy artillery, anti-aircraft Stinger and anti-tank Javelin missiles.

Anatoly Antonov, Russia’s ambassador to the U.S., said such arms deliveries were aimed at weakening Russia but that they were escalating the conflict in Ukraine, while undermining efforts to reach some sort of peace agreement.

“What the Americans are doing is pouring oil on the flames.”

“I see only an attempt to raise the stakes, to aggravate the situation, to see more losses,” Antonov told the Rossiya 24 TV channel.

Antonov, who has served as ambassador to Washington since 2017, said an official diplomatic note had been sent to Washington expressing Russia’s concerns, and that no reply had been given.

“We stressed the unacceptability of this situation when the United States of America poured weapons into Ukraine, and we demanded an end to this practice,” Antonov said.

The interview was replayed on Russian state television throughout Monday.

U.S. President, Joe Biden, pledged 800 million dollars in more weaponry for Ukraine on Thursday and said he would ask Congress for more money to help bolster support for the Ukrainian military.

President Vladimir Putin says the “special military operation” in Ukraine was necessary because the U.S. was using Ukraine to threaten Russia and Moscow, who had to defend the persecution of Russian-speaking people.

Putin said Ukraine and Russia were essentially one people, describing the war as an inevitable confrontation with the U.S., which he accused of threatening Russia by meddling in its backyard and enlarging the NATO military alliance.

Ukraine added that it was fighting an imperial-style land grab and that Putin’s claims of genocide were nonsense.

Zelenskiy has been pleading with U.S. and European leaders to supply Kyiv with heavier arms and equipment.

Putin warned in February that there would be no winners in a conflict between NATO and Russia, which had the world’s biggest arsenal of nuclear warheads.
