Griezmann questions France tactics after Ukraine draw

Antoine Griezmann has questioned France’s tactics after Les Bleus were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Ukraine in 2022 World Cup qualifying on Wednesday.

France head coach Didier Deschamps opted for a 4-4-2 shape rather than his usual 4-2-3-1 formation, and France struggled to adjust to the change.

Griezmann opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a curled effort but France were unable to find a killer second goal. Les Bleus were punished in the second half, as Presnel Kimpembe’s own goal gave Ukraine a point in both teams’ qualifying opener.

Speaking to TF1, Griezmann said: “We needed maybe more offensive players who are able to go one-v-one on the sidelines. We will learn to play in a system like that and try to start winning again. We wanted to win but we didn’t play a great game. We’re going to look at it all and try to improve.”

Deschamps said: “We should have secured the win in the first half, we had the opportunities. It was more difficult in the second half.

“The goal that we conceded was avoidable, we pushed to the end. We are obviously disappointed, it would have been ideal to win.

“The result proves that Ukraine is a good team. We lacked energy in the second half. We can do better. It is not necessarily a match where we were going to create a lot of chances. We needed more precision and movement.”

President, Chief of Staff test positive for COVID

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on social media on Monday he has tested positive for COVID-19.

Through his posts on Facebook and Twitter, Zelenksy said that “There are no lucky people for whom COVID-19 does not pose a threat. Despite all the quarantine measures, I received a positive test.”

The Ukrainian President added that he is feeling “good” and taking vitamin supplements, while he will be working from home, in self-isolation.

“I will overcome COVID-19 as most people do. It’s gonna be fine!” Zelensky’s post reads.

Shortly after his announcement, his chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, announced that he had contracted the virus as well.

Nations League: Ukraine stun Spain in noisy stadium

Ukraine pulled off a shock 1-0 win at home to Spain in the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday at a raucous Olympic Stadium in Kyiv as fans savoured a first ever victory over the 2010 World Cup winners

Viktor Tsygankov scored the only goal of the game as Ukraine defeated Spain in their Nations League match in Kyiv.

Andriy Shevchenko’s side took the lead against the run of play in the 76th minute when Tsygankov took David de Gea by surprise, by firing home from outside the area, after latching on to an outstanding reverse pass from Andriy Yarmolenko.

The goal was wildly celebrated by the whole Ukraine team and some 21,000 fans spaced out across the stadium, with the hosts taking advantage of UEFA regulations allowing 30 per cent capacity at certain matches in an easing of coronavirus restrictions.

Ukraine had lost their last three outings, including a 4-0 reverse to Spain last month and a 7-1 thrashing at the hands of France in a friendly last week, after losing six players due to COVID-19 positives.

Military plane carrying air force cadets crashes, killing 22

A military transport plane, carrying air force cadets, crashed and burst into flames near a highway in north-eastern Ukraine on Friday evening, killing at least 22 people on board, officials said.

The Antonov An-26 aircraft crashed while trying to land during a training exercise, the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Ruslan Khomchak, said in a statement.

Khomchak added that at least two more people were critically injured.

A video posted by Deputy Interior Minister, Anton Gerashchenko, on Facebook showed the plane in flames lying near a road and smoke billowing upwards in the night sky.

Pictures taken later showed rescue workers inspecting the wreckage near the town of Chuhuiv.

An investigation has started on what caused the crash.

One pilot reported failure in the left engine of the twin-engine plane, said Oleksiy Kucher, the governor of the Kharkiv region, according to Interfax Ukraine.

Kucher added that this would not have been a critical situation for an experienced pilot.

Citing preliminary information, Kucher said that some of the people on board managed to jump out of the plane when it was at low altitude.

An eyewitness cited by the Ukraine 24 news channel also said people had jumped out.

The crash happened around two kilometres (1.2 miles) from a military airport, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine said in a statement.

It said 27 people had been on board the plane, revising that figure from an earlier estimate of 28.

The cadets were from the Kharkiv University of Air Force, which is run by the Defence Ministry.

“A state commission is being created to identify all the circumstances and causes of this disaster.

Search and rescue work continues on the spot,’’ President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s office said.

Zelenskiy will travel to the area on Saturday.

  • Ukrainian doctors fly to Italy to help combat coronavirus

Ukrainian doctors fly to Italy to help combat coronavirus

Ukraine, which expects a sharp rise of coronavirus cases in the coming weeks, sent doctors to disease-hit Italy on Saturday to assist their Italian colleagues and to gain field experience.

A team of 20 doctors, including surgeons, neurosurgeons, anaesthesiologists and nurses, will be deployed to the region of Marche in central Italy for two weeks, Italian ambassador to Ukraine, Davide La Cecilia, told Reuters.

“The National Health Service in our country is very stressed.

“So, we badly need medical personnel and are very happy that Ukraine is sending this humanitarian aid,’’ said La Cecilia at Kiev’s airport, before the medical mission’s departure.

Ukrainian Interior Minister, Arsen Avakov, who accompanied the ambassador, said Kiev would send more medical aid and disinfectant to Italy in the coming days.

“It is an honour for us to help Italy during such tough times.

“We know that many Ukrainians live and work in Italy.

“By helping Italy, we are helping our citizens,’’ said Avakov.

Ukraine’s Health Ministry has reported 1,096 cases, including 28 deaths since March 3, when the first case was recorded.

But as thousands of Ukrainians have recently returned home from abroad, the ministry expects a much bigger outbreak ahead.

The daily tally of new cases increased to 154 on Saturday from 138 on Friday, up from 62 last Monday.

The head of the Ukrainian medical mission, neurosurgeon Andriy Miroshnichenko, said that all the team members volunteered to work in Italy.

“After they come back home, they will be able to treat patients and work, having practical experience and knowledge about the disease,’’ said Miroshnichenko.

Asked whether the Ukrainian doctors were not afraid to catch the virus themselves, Glib Bidyukov, a nurse said it was “a consciously made choice’’.

“When you choose healthcare, you understand that you put yourself in some danger.

“Each of us made a choice a long time ago,’’ Bidyukov said. (

Iran admits to shooting down Ukrainian plane

Iran on Saturday said it unintentionally shot down the Ukrainian airliner that crashed this week killing 176 people, calling it an “unforgivable mistake”.

The Ukraine International Airlines plane came down on Wednesday shortly after Iran launched missiles at bases hosting American forces in Iraq in response to the killing of Qasem Soleimani, one of Iran’s top generals, in a US drone strike.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran deeply regrets this disastrous mistake,” Iranian President Hassan Rouhani tweeted.

“Armed Forces’ internal investigation has concluded that regrettably missiles fired due to human error caused the horrific crash of the Ukrainian plane & death of 176 innocent people,” he added.

“Investigations continue to identify & prosecute this great tragedy & unforgivable mistake.”

  • Debutant Ayodele-Aribo dazzles as Ukraine force Super Eagles to 2-2 draw

Debutant Ayodele-Aribo dazzles as Ukraine force Super Eagles to 2-2 draw

A relatively-newbreed Super Eagles team came close to bringing down Ukraine’s “Blue and Yellow’’ in Dnipro on Tuesday before suffering loss of concentration for a 2-2 draw.

At the Dnipro Arena in the central Ukrainian city, the hosts were almost being disgraced by their guests, before two goals in 45 seconds with 15 minutes left saved the day.

Debutant Joseph Ayodele-Aribo put the seal on a frenetic beginning at the 31,000-capacity venue when he cleverly utilised a cross by Alex Iwobi.

That was after great work by Samuel Kalu had left the Ukrainian defence in tatters.

The goal made the Glasgow Rangers FC player became the 60th player to score right on international debut for Nigeria.

Two minutes later, Samuel Chukwueze drove into the home team’s vital area but saw his shot saved by goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

In the 12th minute, goalkeeper Francis Uzoho read the Ukrainian foremen well enough to intercept what would have been a dangerous situation.

Halfway into the half, Nigeria should have made it two as Iwobi’s chip found Ayodele-Aribo.

The Scottish Premier League forward connected with a diving header that took all of Lunin’s awareness to push over the bar.

From the corner kick, Osimhen headed powerfully towards goal but Lunin again thwarted.

Eleven minutes later, the Eagles were two goals up, as Osimhen lashed into the far corner from the penalty kick spot after Kalu was upended in the box.

In the 42nd minute, Uzoho made a terrific double save from Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Three minutes later, Iwobi could not really find Osimhen to make it three as Nigeria swept forward once more.

Three minutes into the second half, Iwobi wasted a glorious chance as he dragged his shot too wide of Lunin’s post when clear on goal.

Four minutes later, Nigeria should have been given a second penalty kick as Kalu was hacked in the box.

Semi Ajayi made a decisive touch to deny Victor Kovalenko and Roman Yaremchuk in the 57th minute.

This was just after Chukwueze sold his pass too long to Osimhen who lurked in the other end’s vital area.

Two minutes later, a brilliant solo run by Chukwueze ended with him once more placing the ball too wide of goal, with Lunin flat-footed.

Andriy Yarmolenko, Yaremchuk, Zinchenko, Viktor Tsygankov and Mykola Matvyenko all made efforts to break down the Nigerian defence with no luck.

Just after the hour, Uzoho showed why he should have been the one in goal for Nigeria at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt last July.

He e punched away a free-kick from about 20 yards that was all too similar to the one Riyad Mahrez utilised to score for Algeria in the AFCON semi-finals.

However, the home team got lucky in the 78th minute, as the dangerous Zinchenko got behind the defence and shot past Uzoho.

Right from the kick-off after the goal, loss of concentration handed the advantage to the home team, and Yaremchuk got the ball past Uzoho.

Yaremchuk however appeared to have scored with the hand and the effort should have been ruled off.

On the dot of 90 minutes, Uzoho punched away another fierce 20-yard free-kick.

Shevchenko to ring changes in Ukraine team against Super Eagles

Ukraine head coach Andriy Shevchenko has stated that he will make changes in his starting line-up from the set that defeated Lithuania 3-0 for the international friendly encounter against the Super Eagles.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Tuesday’s encounter at the Dnipro Arena would be the first meeting between both countries at the senior level.

Shevchenko’s side defeated Lithuania 3-0 in their European Championship qualifier in Vilnius on Saturday.

“We will look at the reaction of the players.

“Still, the coverage was completely different. We will analyze how the muscles of the players react,” Shevchenko stated in an interview published on the official website of Ukraine Football Federation (UFF).

“After our training in Dnipro, we will decide on the players that will take to the field.

“I have the opportunity to give playing time to those players that did not play against Lithuania. I think you’ll see more of these names in the lineup.

Meanwhile, the Ukraine national team will have an open training session this Monday which will be open to media and fans.

He added that Spain–based defender Chidozie Awaziem arrived the team’s hotel ahead of defenders Olaoluwa Aina and Oluwasemilogo Ajayi.

The federation spokesman said Kelechi Iheanacho was being expected at just after noon.

“The training session will hold at FC Dnipro’s training ground at Dnipropetrovsk, within the Pridniprovsk housing estate,” he said.

Tuesday’s clash will hold at the 31,000-capacity Dnipro Arena, home ground of top club FC Dnipro, and will kick off at 9.30 p.m. Ukraine time (7.30 p. m. Nigeria time).

NAN reports that it is the first assemblage of the three-times African champions since finishing third at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt in July.

The game also serves as part of the Super Eagles’ preparations for November’s 2021 AFCON qualifying duels with the Squirrels of Benin Republic and the Crocodiles of Lesotho.

  • Onyekuru withdraws from Super Eagles friendly with Ukraine

Super Eagles winger, Henry Onyekuru has confirmed he won’t be available for Nigeria’s high profile friendly against Ukraine next week, AOIFootball.com reports.

The Monaco winger, who confirmed the news of his unavailability to AOIFootball.com, stated that he was yet to get a resident card and would find it difficult to return to France should he fly to honour the game in Kyiv next week.

“It is true that I won’t be available for the match against Ukraine next week due to resident permit.

“I only arrived here less than a month and I’m yet to get my resident card, so if I leave now I won’t be able to return and will then have to apply for another visa to fly back to France,” Onyekuru explained.

The winger’s case could, however, be likened to what transpired between former Arsenal midfielder Kelechi Nwakali who flew into Nigeria for the U-23 qualifiers against Libya in March but had to stay back for months due to resident permit to Portugal, a situation that cost him his season with FC Porto.

In his absence, Eagles gaffer Gernot Rohr has already called up Belgian based Dennis Emmanuel Bonaventure to replace the Monaco winger.
