  • Fellow Nigerians and governors they do not deserve – Owei Lakemfa

    By Owei Lakemfa

GOVERNOR David Nweze Umahi of Ebonyi State, 56, is a billionaire of 26 years standing. Therefore, when such a wealthy man who should be busy looking after his billions like a herdsman tenders to his cows, decides to make the big sacrifice of governing a people, he will not tolerate slackness or be bogged down by the niceties of law and order or fundamental human rights.

This is what the uninitiated like the human rights activists misconstrue as his dictatorial and anti-democratic tendencies. For instance, he ordered that all inhabitants of the state should wear face masks as a preventive measure against the spread of the COVID-19 virus. This is a simple instruction. But rather than obey, there were people asking whether his government has provided such masks for the people, or made them available, accessible and affordable.

An angry governor then called stakeholders to warn the people that they either wear face masks or be summarily caned in public. He directed Local Government chairmen and officials in the state to administer the cane. It must be quite annoying to Umahi that there are people challenging his cane directive. These hold that an accused is presumed innocent until found guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction. That every Nigerian has a right to legal defence and fair hearing. So, his directive is illegal and barbaric.

But Umahi is just being lenient; in another case, he ordered that people should be shot at sight. It happened this way. He had ordered that all the borders in the state be shut down to prevent the virus from spreading. However, 37 persons infiltrated from Enugu State and were arrested. He ordered them isolated for 14 days and directed the police and army to shoot any of them that attempts to escape from the quarantine.

However, that was not the first time Umahi was ordering the summary execution of people without trial. A few weeks before, his convoy was inadvertently held up on the Onicha Road by mourners. The next day, he ordered that henceforth, mourners who block roads should be summarily executed. He said he was giving the order to protect “the common man.” With such blanket order, soldiers and security men in the state have not just the licence to kill, but kill any number of persons once they are alleged to be mourners blocking a road. In this, the wise Umahi makes himself and the security men, the complainant, prosecutor, judge, appellate court and executioner. Umahi is the law, and his word is the law.

In another case, he seized and detained the Sun Newspaper reporter, Chijioke Agwu, for allegedly publishing on April 17, 2020, an inaccurate report on Lassa fever outbreak in the state. The journalist was to be prosecuted under the Ebonyi State Coronavirus and Other Dangerous (Infectious) law, but was “pardoned” by the magnanimous governor. Umahi also banned Agwu and Peter Okutu of Vanguard Newspapers for life from entering Government House or any government facility in the state.

Three days later, Okutu was arrested over a report he did on the alleged military invasion of Umuogodoakpu-Ngbo community of the state. On the arrest, the governor said: “Okutu is fond of degrading Ebonyi State, and I don’t know why my officials have allowed him to continue to do that because he is not from Ebonyi State. I want to ban him for life with Chijioke Agwu. I don’t want to see them anywhere in any government facility”

He made it clear he would not allow the journalists any legal trial hinting he would rather, employ mob justice: “If you think you have the pen, we have the ‘koboko’(cow hide whip). Let’s leave the court alone. Ebonyi people are very angry with the press and let me warn that I won’t be able to control them or know when they unleash mayhem on you if you continue to write to create panic in the state.”

Umahi, who has magnanimously lifted the ban, plays god in the state. That is why he follows no rules, has no need for the courts and would ban journalists ‘for life’ when he himself has a tenure in office. But he is highly spiritual hence his announcement that his successor will be picked by God.

Umahi’s counterpart in Kano State, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has similar proclivities. As COVID-19 ravaged the world and made landfall in Nigeria, the Ganduje government was in self-denial. When hundreds of persons began to die in the state, rather than carry out tests to ascertain cause of death, he ruled out COVID-19 saying this was based on ‘verbal autopsy.’ When the reality of the virus sweeping the state could no longer be denied, rather than take quick proactive measures like other states such as Lagos did, Ganduje was asking the Federal Government for a hefty N15 billion to fight the virus. When his request did not seem to be granted, he cried that the centre had abandoned the state.

Ganduje, an educated man also took disturbing steps. For instance, when a victim tests positive, the logical step is to isolate and treat. That is what Lagos State did, even to Europeans who are not Nigerian citizens. In the case of Ganduje, he ‘expelled’ a sufferer to his home state of Jigawa.

Ganduje has since moved to ‘expel’ hundreds of homeless children called Almajiri to their alleged states of origin. Some of these children expelled to a state like Kaduna tested positive. So Ganduje has simply helped to spread the virus across more areas.

Tragically, some state governors in the North have copied Ganduje’s bad example by expelling the Almajiris who are allegedly not from their states. Many of these children with nowhere to go, have appeared on the streets of Niger State and Abuja.

Unfortunately, Ganduje’s actions have stigmatised these children as carriers of the Coronavirus, and the possibility of their being attacked in various parts of the country is quite real. The stigmatization and expulsion of the Almajiris by Ganduje, and copycat governors, is inhuman and unconstitutional.

The least conscientious Nigerians, human, social and political right activists, professional associations and the trade unions should do, is to challenge these illegalities. Can we have lawyers willing to challenge these illegalities in court?

Even if the Umahis and Gandujes have immunity as governors, we can still challenge them so that after their tenure, we can call them to account for their gross human rights abuses, if not in Nigeria, then abroad. In conclusion, I believe governors are honourable people whose acts should be meaningful to the average citizen with common-sense, if they do not, then there is a yawning gap in governance which requires we replace either the governor, or the governed.

  • Umahi orders arrest of monarchs, threatens dethronement

The Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, on Sunday, ordered the arrest of the traditional rulers of Umuogodoakpu-Ngbo and Ohankwu communities in the Ohaukwu and Ikwo local government areas of the state.

The governor gave the order over the missing of a naval officer and the killing of a 70-year-old woman in both communities.

Umahi also ordered the arrest of the coordinators of the Ohaukwu West and Ikwo East development centres, Stephen Ogenyi and Mr Ekuma Emmanuel, respectively, both in Ohaukwu and Ikwo LGAs over the two incidents.

Umahi, who stated this during his Easter broadcast, equally suspended the technical assistants, senior technical assistants, executive assistants, laison officers, management committee members and other appointees from both communities.

The naval officer got missing at Eguorie village while a 70-year-old woman was also allegedly killed by Ohankwu people of the Ikwo LGA of the state.

According to Umahi, if by Tuesday the monarchs failed to provide information on the identities of perpetrators of the incidents that led to the missing of the naval officer and killing of the woman, they would be dethroned.

  • Umahi orders shoot on sight of absconders from Isolation Centres

Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi has ordered security operatives to shoot any returnee that tries to escape from the quarantine and isolation centres on sight, The Guardian gathered.

The state government had recently ordered immediate isolation of no fewer than 37 returnees that entered the state through the bush after the state government ordered the closure of its borders.

He noted that any of the returnees that try to escape from the quarantine centre where they would be subjected to medical tests daily for 14 days following Coronavirus pandemic should be shot on sight.

The state government had ordered that all the borders in the state be immediately shut down to prevent the Coronavirus from spreading to the state.

But no fewer than 30 persons were said to have entered the bush and crossed to a boundary town between Abakaliki and Enugu where vehicles were already on standby to carry them to their various destinations.

The 30 escapees and seven returnees were later taken to a quarantine centre at the Abakaliki Township Stadium where Umahi visited them at 9 pm and ordered that they are subjected to a daily medical examination for 14-days.

  • Umahi bans burials, weddings, other public gatherings in Ebonyi

Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi on Monday banned all forms of public gathering in the state for one month.

The Governor stated this at the town hall meeting which held at the International Conference Centre Abakaliki, the State Capital.

He listed such public gatherings to include burials, weddings, conferences, seminars and any other large gatherings.

Represented by his Deputy, Kelechi Igwe, the Governor said the ban is for a period of one month in the first instance.

He said the ban is part of measures to protect the people from contacting the deadly Coronavirus which has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation.

He said: “It is painful to take the decision but government had to reason that it is better to let the dead bury the dead for now. But if you feel that you cannot wait, then you can take the corpse and bury just you and your family without any ceremony and invitation to anybody.”

  • Bloody Ebonyi councillorship primaries: Umahi sacks two aides, orders their arrest

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi has sacked two of his aides allegedly involved in a murder during the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) councillorship primaries on Feb.21.

The governor also directed the police command in the state to arrest the two aides for possible prosecution.

The directive was contained in a statement signed and issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Dr Kenneth Ugbala, in Abakaliki on Sunday.

Ugbala said the affected aides were Uche Ibiam, the Coordinator of Ubeyi Development Centre of Afikpo North Local Government Area and Mr Ibiam Ogbonnaya, a Technical Assistant (TA) on security.

“The governor further directs security agencies to carry out investigations and prosecute all those found guilty in the crime in accordance with extant laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The governor assured Ebonyi people of their safety and his readiness to sustain the peace and tranquility reigning in the state,” he said.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Loveth Odah, who confirmed the incident, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the matter had been reported to the command.

She said that the command had already commenced investigation into the incident.

“We can confirm the death of Mr Enyinnaya Ibiam during the primaries at Afikpo North Local Government Area of the state and the recovery of a vehicle belonging to the coordinator of Ubeyi Development Centre, abandoned at the area.

“Information reaching us indicates that the coordinator allegedly hired and stormed the scene of the primaries with thugs who shot sporadically, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to several people.

“When the vehicle was searched, we recovered a bag containing a locally made pistol and six live ammunition,” she said.

She said that the coordinator had not been arrested and promised that the matter would be thoroughly investigated and the culprits brought to book.

  • South East region set to launch own security outfit soon – Umahi

A Regional security outfit has been formed to protect lives and properties in the Southeast, Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi said on Wednesday.

Umahi broke the news in his capacity as the Chairman of the Southeast Governors’ Forum (SGF).

The Forum said the need for total re-evaluation of the security architecture in the region informed the formation of the joint security to ensure adequate security.

Umahi spoke when he hosted the General Officer Commanding 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Lasisi Adegboye at the Government House, Abakaliki.

According to the governor, Southeast governors have written to the Federal Government on the joint security taskforce in the zone and that they are putting things together on the outfits launched to strengthen security in the region.

He called for synergy among the Southeast states to tackle security.

The governor said there is great synergy between the security agencies in Ebonyi State and the state security outfit – Neighbourhood Security Watch, a development he noted, has made Ebonyi one of the most secured states in the country.

Umahi said: “One of our major challenges here in Ebonyi state is our problem with Cross River people, but we bless God for the initiatives of the youths. The deputy governor and the speaker of the House of Assembly had to arrange a joint youth committee on Cross River and Ebonyi people to pay a courtesy visit to the GOC.

“Probably, who knows if you are the one that will make both states to sign a lasting agreement for a lasting peace? Here in Ebonyi, I thank the police, the army, the Department of State Services (DSS). It has been a union of brotherhood and working together with our Neighbourhood Watch.

“Every region has their own peculiarities and we have formed our own joint security taskforce and we have written to Federal Government and we are putting things together because we had a joint meeting with all the Service chiefs and the GOC.

“So, we discussed and agreed on what we need to do to continue to give safety to our people in Southeast.

“No one will say that he will not be part of the joint security because when people are kidnapped, for example, in Anambra State, they could be found in Ebonyi. So, we need that synergy to work together to give protection to everybody and here in Ebonyi, we are among the first in the federation to start our law on internal security and that is the Neighbouhood Watch and they have fantastically done very well.

“I am happy that the police, the army, the DSS are not ashamed to proclaim that our Neighbouhood Security Watch have done very well.

“And so, we can say we are the safest state in the country and there is no joke about that. So, it is important we reevaluate our security architecture and then, see how we can assure our people of their safety.

“These days, it is not very easy to travel from one state to the other. We have to evaluate all these things. But, in the Southeast, I can say that God has really defeated violence, armed robbery and kidnapping.”

The GOC assured the region of adequate security.

He said: “Your Excellency, it is our duty to continue doing what we are doing while you sleep with your two eyes closed. We are ready to work round the clock to ensure peace and security in the zone.”

  • Obaseki’s Endorsement: Edo PDP begs Secondus to call Umahi, Danjuma, others to order

Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called on the National Chairman of the party, Chief Uche Secondus, to call some top members of the party to order over their endorsement of the re-election bid of the State Governor, Godwin Obaseki.

Chairman of the party in the state, Chief Dan Orbih, made the call on Sunday, in a letter titled “Edo 2020 Election Under Threat. Saboteurs Within!”

His concern is apparently over the endorsement of the re-election of Governor Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress (APC), by a member of the BoT of the PDP, Senator Daisy Danjuma, in Lagos last week, and Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State.

He described their action as “open treachery, condemnable and smacks of indiscipline and ingratitude” and a threat to the party’s chance to recapture the state from crisis-ridden ruling APC, after almost 12 years in opposition.

“As you are aware, Edo State is holding its governorship election later in the year. Edo PDP has been in opposition in the state since 2008 and from the opinion polls we conducted, this year, 2020, represents our brightest chance of winning the state back.

“The party in government is engrossed in a fierce battle of supremacy between the governor, Governor Obaseki and his national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

“Their “fight” has seriously affected governance to the extent that even the state house of assembly only has 10 out of 24 members seating even though they won 24/24 seats in the last elections. Not fewer than 6 council chairmen have been sacked as well as at least 4 members of state executive council because of their “questionable loyalty”!

“They have polarized their party beyond recognition. There is a gale of suspension going on in their party as the National Chairman, State chairman and even the Governor, Deputy Governor and the Secretary to the State Government have all been suspended by the rival factions in their party. Their party is therefore now immersed in court cases across the federation.

“Your Excellency, this background was necessary so that you understand the pains we are going through in Edo when we hear leaders, members of the board of trustees and even some Governors’ uncharitable endorsement of APC’s embattled Governor Godwin Obaseki. The most recent of this is Governor David Umahi’s open endorsement of Godwin Obaseki for re-election.

“This practice, you will agree with us, is condemnable and smacks of indiscipline and ingratitude. It defeats the spirit of camaraderie that is supposed to exist within a political party. It is a morale-damper and it’s unacceptable.

“Your excellency, please use your office to call these leaders to order so that this open treachery doesn’t become a norm in our great party.”

  • Edo: Plots to unseat Obaseki will fail – Gov. Umahi

Ebonyi Governor, David Umahi on Friday assured Godwin Obaseki will be re-elected Governor of Edo state.

He said nothing will stop the Governor’s re-election because he has done well and deserves to continue in office.

Obaseki is a member of the All Progressive Congress(APC) while Umahi is a member of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Umahi was addressing Obaseki’s wife, Betsy and other Southern Governors’ Wife’s who were on a courtesy call to him in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State Capital.

The Governor’s Wives were in the state for the Southern Nigeria Governors’ Wifes’ Forum quarterly meeting.

Umahi said: “Power belongs to God and no matter what anybody will do it is God that has the final say and I can assure you Ma, you know as an apostle of the most high God I also prophesy . And because of the good work your husband is doing for the people of Edo State no man can unseat him.

“Power belongs to God and no matter what anybody will do, it is God that has the final say and I can assure you ma, you know as an apostle of the most high God I also prophesy. And because of the good work your husband is doing for the people of Edo state, no man can
    unset him.

“I made this statement so that the glory of God will become larger. It happened here in Ebonyi.

” I have a testimony of what God can do. Even in our NEC meeting, when Obaseki speaks, you see Economics.

“You see a man that came from private sector background. And so, we can’t wish that away. So, congratulations to you in advance and to all of us.

“You know the Governors; we have so many elections. First is the primary, second one is the poll, then the third one is the tribunal. Then another one is the appeal and then the election of the elections is the supreme court.

“So, it is not an easy thing and if the hand of God is not upon you, you can’t scale through all these hurdles. And so, it is God who has brought all of us to leadership and I say double congratulations to all of us”.

  • Ihedioha: Umahi leads PDP protest in Ebonyi, demands reversal of judgement in 24hrs

Ihedioha: Umahi leads PDP protest in Ebonyi, demands reversal of judgement in 24hrs

Ebonyi State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has given the Nigerian Supreme Court 24 hrs to reverse the judgement it delivered on the Imo State governorship election.

The party gave the ultimatum during the peaceful protest it staged in Abakaliki, the State Capital.

This is even as the party in the Southeast said the Supreme Court Judges who gave the verdict will not know peace unless they reverse the judgement.

The Court had last week sacked Governor Emeka Ihedioha of the PDP as Governor of Imo state.

The Court also declared Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressive Congress (APC) as the winner of the election.

The judgement has been trailed by controversy and protest across the country and Ebonyi on Monday joined in the protests.

Thousands of the party faithful in the state marched round the city to protest what they described as injustice and a rape on democracy in the country.

The protest, which commenced from the state party Secretariat, terminated at the Federal High Court where the Chairman of the Party, Onyekachi Nwebonyi and Southeast Zonal Vice Chairman, Austine Umahi addressed the party faithful.

They bore placards some of which reads: “NJC must act now”, Imo guber case: Supreme Court must revisit judgement, Ihedioha must return as Imo State governor, Save Democracy in Nigeria, Judiciary is now the lost hope of the common man”.

They protesters wore all black clothing to signify that they are in a state of grief over the judgement.

Speaking, Mr Umahi said the party is giving the Supreme Court and the National Judicial Council 24 hours to reverse the judgment that sacked Emeka Ihedioha as governor of Imo State.

“We are giving them 24hours to reverse the judgment. If they don’t reverse the judgment, then democracy has been murdered in Nigeria. If they don’t reverse the judgement, they will never have peace in their lives”,
    Mr Umahi said.
Mr Umahi described the judgement as unfortunate adding that the Judiciary has since lost the respect it used to command in the past from the masses.

He said: “It is very unfortunate that our democracy has been murdered. It is very unfortunate that under the watch of the judiciary our democracy is murdered. Our understanding is that judiciary is the last hope of the common man, but today it is the lost hope of the common man.

“For how long shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? And the Bible says God forbid. We want and we are saying it very categorical that the Judgment of the Supreme Court is a pervert judgement and must be reversed immediately, for the oneness of this nation and for the furtherance of democracy. They should reverse and reinstate the man that was elected by the Imolites and he is the RT. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha and not a man that was imported and through the back door imposed on the people of Imo State.

“He is an agenda and we understand the agenda that is in him and will resist him with all that we have. That judgement cannot stand. We are here as lovers of democracy.

“Judiciary, I want to pass an information to you, it could be one person today, tomorrow, it could be your turn. If you don’t resist this abnormality. If you don’t resist this abomination and If you don’t resist this imperfection, one day, it will be your turn.

“It is time to rise up and say what is wrong is wrong. We have risen as democrats to say that what is wrong is wrong. To say, that we shouldn’t allow our judiciary to die. Once judiciary is captured, we are finished in this country and from all indications, we can see that we have a compromised judiciary. We can see there is no independence again. There is no rule of law in this country.

“Where are we going as a country? This is worst than a banana republic. You are talking of awarding victory to someone that came fourth in an election? I don’t know where the Supreme Court got that political Mathmatics? From all calculations and from all permutations, it is wrong before God.

“We want to warn that we are not foolish. We understand what have been going on in this country. If not for the rules of law, will APC be in Government today? A Democrat handed over to them and they have decided to squeeze, undermine us and see that nothing good happens in this country.

“We want to say this. We are disillusioned and disenchanted. We are not happy. We have never seen a thing like this. And I know that the international community will be laughing at us..We have turning to a big for nothing country..it is a country that there is no hope for a common man. It has gotten to a level in this country where you can sit in your house and in the comfort of your home and write election results and the judiciary will approve it.

“That is not right. We must have to get it correct. We need to address it, because if we don’t get it right, there is no tommorow for Nigeria. Nigeria has no future if we don’t get right today. You may be saying, oh, it is PDP today. But it is not talking about APC or PDP. We are not talking about any political Party. We are talking about Nigeria and the democracy. A lot of persons have died for this democracy and some people want to now rubbish it. They will not succeed”,Umahi concluded.

  • APC speaks on probing PDP’s Umahi for claiming ‘100% membership’ of party

APC speaks on probing PDP’s Umahi for claiming ‘100% membership’ of party

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi said it viewed with great concern, the reported claim by Gov. Dave Umahi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that he also belonged to APC.

The governor was quoted to have told his audience at the Government House, Abakaliki, on Monday, January 6, that he was “100 per cent APC.” He had since denied the statement.

Addressing newsmen at the end of the APC state Executive Committee’s meeting on Friday in Abakiliki, the Chairman of the party, Chief Eze Nwachukwu, called on relevant authorities to investigate the claim.

He said that such an utterance by a top government office holder was capable of endangering the nation’s party democracy.

“The alleged bipartisan claim credited to our dear governor is capable of jeopardising the nation’s party democracy.

“There is no where it is provided in the Electoral Act for a person to belong to two political parties, especially one occupying an executive position.

“So, we view the comment with great concern because it is capable of truncating the country’s democracy,” Nwachukwu said.

He urged the general public to discountenance the governor’s claim.
