Unijos denies owing cleaners 9 months salaries

The Management of the University of Jos has denied speculations that it’s owing cleaners nine of months salary arrears.

Mr Abdullahi Abdullahi, the Senior Deputy Registrar, Information and Publications of the university rebutted the allegation in a statement on Saturday in Jos.

Students of the institution recently staged a two-day peaceful protest over the poor sanitary condition of their hostels.

The students, who shut down academic activities within the university permanent site and main campus, alleged non payment of the salaries of cleaners in the institution.

However, Abdullahi said that the university management had been working to address the issue of delayed cleaning services, which according to him,  had caused great discomfort in the living conditions of the students.

He maintained that the protest by students was due to inaccurate information regarding the university’s efforts to address the situation.

“Following the protest, the university management immediately convened a meeting with the students and they were presented with comprehensive details of the issues in contention.

“This is done in order to dispel prior misconceptions and contrary to information in some quarters, no cleaning contractor was being owed nine months of unpaid claims.

“Rather, in spite of the limited resources, the university has cumulatively successfully cleared about five months of outstanding payments.

“However, the delay in crediting some of the cleaning contractors resulted from some procedural aspects inherent in financial transactions of this nature.

“It is not due to a neglect of obligations by the university management,”he said.

Abdullahi, however, explained that contractual payments were usually processed only after the completion of the agreed work and not before.

According to him, such move aligns with the standard operational protocols.

“Therefore, contractors who had undertaken not to work within the period under review should not expect payment,”he added.

Abdullahi further said that the management had approved the renovation of some dilapidated hostels and regular evacuation of waste to improve the sanitary condition within the hostels.

He also commended the students for conducting themselves peacefully during the protest and for their willingness to resort to dialogue.

UniJos sets agenda for new ASUU president

The University of Jos Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has advised Prof. Christopher Piwuna, the newly elected President of the union to vigorously pursue its agenda.

Prof. Jurbe Molwus, Chairperson of ASUU in UniJos, gave the advice when he formally presented the new president to members of his chapter.

Molwus, who presented Piwuna to the congress on Thursday in Jos, urged him not to deviate from the core struggle of the union.

He said that apart from members’ welfare, the new president must pursue issues around quality of university education, standard of living of Nigerians, dwindling economy, among others.

“Our expectation is that he will continue to exemplify the characters for which he is known for; he is a very honest and truthful person.

“He’ is also a very fearless, courageous and very emotionally intelligent person; we expect nothing but good result from this combination of character in one person.

“He must consolidate and pursue the existing agenda of the union, and this is why among all our demands, none is bigger than the other.

“Our desire for the revitalisation of the university is also as important as our welfare issues.

“ASUU went on strike in 2022 over some demands, those issues have not been resolved, and so we urge the new president to pursue those demands vigorously,” Molwus urged.

The Chairperon, however, advised the new president to consolidate on the gains and progress made by his predecessors.

Also speaking, Prof Tanko Ishaya, the Vice Chancellor (V-C) of the university, thanked ASUU for considering one of his staff to be its leader.

Tanko also urged Piwuna to pursue an agenda that would stabilise university education in the country.

“The new president has a very huge task because our university system needs a lot of work.

“We need a lot of intervention from government; a lot of issues that need to be addressed in order to make our universities optimally functional,” the V-C said.

Piwuna, a Professor and Consultant Psychiatrist, was elected the 14th national president of ASUU.

Piwuna, the immediate past Vice President of ASUU, was elected president at the 23rd National Delegates’ Conference of the union, held at the University of Benin, Edo State.

Unijos monthly electricity bill hits N80m

The electricity bill for the University of Jos has risen from between N20 and N30 million to N80 million, following the recent hike in electricity tariff, particularly for consumers on Band A.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, disclosed this on Tuesday, when members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the institution, led a peaceful protest to his office.

Ishaya, who described the monthly allocation for the university as grossly inadequate, said that the management of the Jos Electricity Distribution (JED), Plc had threatened to disconnect the university from power source.

”We budgeted between N20 to N30 million monthly for electricity bill, but with the new tariff, JED gave us a bill of N80 million for the month of April.

”Unfortunately, our monthly overhead is just N14 million and we recently increased students charges to cover these essential services.

”But we can’t cope with this development and JEDC is already threatening to disconnect the university from power source,”he said.

ASUU members in the university had organised the peaceful protest over the non-implementation of agreements reached with the Federal Government over the years.

Prof. Jurbe Molwus, Chairperson of ASUU in the university, represented by his vice, Prof. Kiri Jaryum, presented the union’s charter of demands to the vice chancellor.

Molwus said that the protest was in line with the directive of its National Executive Council (NEC).

  • Minority languages may go extinct soon – Unijos VC raises alarm

Minority languages may go extinct soon – Unijos VC raises alarm

The Vice Chancellor, University of Jos, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, has said that most minority languages in Nigeria may soon go into extinction due to the lack of autography.

Ishaya said this in an interview with newsmen on the sideline of an international conference on Language and Literature, organised by the Department of English at the university on Monday.

The vice chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Rahila Gowon, also said that “this is the reason behind the non-implementation of the National Language Policy (NLP) of the Federal Government.

“I remember when I was an undergraduate, we were taught to write lesson notes in our languages and use it to teach Biology and other subjects.

”Yes, for the minority languages, they’re likely to go extinct but not for the majority languages.

“Already, the major languages have autography and they are being enforced in the school system as major subjects.

”The major languages may not go extinct but minor languages are likely to. It is left for parents to teach their children at home because they are the first teachers,” he said.

Ishaya advocated the implementation of the NLP, saying the policy would naturally address the threat.

He, therefore, called on Nigerians to adhere to lay down procedures towards reversing the trend.

”The NLP stipulates that the medium of instruction in the junior primary school is the mother tongue or language of immediate community.

”However, we find out that there are so many languages that are in use, but people prefer to go straight to English, because they do not want to or don’t know which one they should take as their language of instruction.

“Of course, there are some major tribes like Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Efik and maybe Tiv, which use the mother tongue but in Plateau, for instance, it’s been very difficult.

”Also, implementation of the policy has been very difficult because many languages do not have autography, but these are being developed and they are being encouraged,” he said.

The Head of Deparyment, Prof. Jeff Doki, said that the conference was important, adding that language and communication could be used to end conflicts in our society.

He said the international conference, which was the first of its kind in the university, brought together at least 300 scholars from different disciplines, to chart a new future for the study of English, Literature and Communication Studies in society.

The Chairman, Local Organizing Committee of the conference, Prof. Jerome Dooga, presented a paper on “Navigating the communication minefield in a turbulent and uncertain world”.

According to Dooga, language had never been neutral.

“The task of making sense of the increasingly complex communication minefield requires an amalgam of interdisciplinary perspectives and approaches.

”Language has never been neutral, but in today’s world, linguistic communication has become especially contentious as humans promote novel and sometimes strange ideologies.

”Our world is a linguistic and communication minefield, and peaceful human co-existence has become increasingly challenging by the day,” he said.

The theme of the conference is ”Language Communication and Literature in an uncertain and turbulent world”.
