Why I dropped out of UNILAG after only two weeks – BBNaija star, Angel

Big Brother Nigeria (BBNaija) star, Angel Smith, popularly known only as Angel has opened up on why she dropped out of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) after only two weeks.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Angel made this known, saying she left UNILAG after a brief stint because she was sexually assaulted by a man she can’t really remember anymore.

Baring her heart in a recent podcast with media personality, Taymesan, the BBNaija star said the incident messed with her psyche so much that she couldn’t focus on school work.

“I was in UNILAG for only two weeks. I struggled so much for those two weeks because when I got into UNILAG was my first sxxual assault experience.

“After that experience happened, I can remember just moving through it and pretending like it never happened.

“It affected my school life so much. I always blamed it on not knowing what to do in UNILAG when actually, I’ve always been fully aware of what I wanted to do,” she said.

Angel revealed nobody knew that she had dropped out of school until much later, and that when she told her mum about it, she didn’t disclose the true reason why she left school.

The BBNaija star and writer, who disclosed that she had wanted to be a gynecologist, said she had to give up the dream and began developing her English speaking and writing skills.

“I knew what I wanted to do but I didn’t just do that because I had experienced something so traumatic and I didn’t speak to anybody about it, especially not my granny because I had so much shame.

“Nobody knew I was out of school until my mum had asked and I was like, ‘let me finally be out with it’.

“When I told her that and she asked me why, I obviously did not tell her what happened. I just told her I didn’t think I was doing the right course.

“Then she enrolled me in a foundational programme in the UK, which I dropped out from too,” Angel said.

She explained that she couldn’t stay in school because at that point, she didn’t know what she wanted to do with her life but going for BBNaija gave her a lot of clarity.

“I regret going for Big Brother” – Angel

Meanwhile, in the same chat with Taymesan on his Tea with Tay Podcast, the 22-year-old reality TV star also disclosed that she regretted going for the BBNaija reality TV show.

Taymesan had asked if she regretted going on the reality show, and she said yes.

Angel, who claims to be the most misunderstood ex-BBN housemate, said she sometimes wishes she could go back to her old life.

She recalled instances when she tweeted at random and people misunderstood her post for a dig at her colleagues.

“Yes I regretted it…It’s like who sent you message, I know I was not in the best place, but I was doing perfectly okay for my age.

“There are days you’re grateful and days when you’re just angry…There are days the trolling get too much…” she said in part.

ASUU reacts to Federal Government’s payment of salary arrears

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has reacted after the Federal Government’s payment of minimum wage arrears.

ASUU insists that the Strike will still continue pending when the Federal Government will engage them in a meaningful meeting.

ASUU made this revelation via a circular released by the University of Lagos branch of the union titled, ‘Payment of minimum wage arrears’.

The union also accused the government of displaying an indifferent attitude toward its demands and agitations for a better university environment.

Osodeke, in a statement to announce the extension of the rollover strike, noted that the national executive council of the union “was disappointed that Government did not treat the matters involved with utmost urgency that they deserved during the four-week period as expected of a reasonable, responsive, and well-meaning administration”.

He said the NEC concluded that the government had failed to satisfactorily address all the issues raised in the 2020 Memorandum of Action within the four-week roll-over strike period and resolved that the strike be rolled over for another eight weeks.

He added that the strike continues over the government’s failure to “satisfactorily” implement the Memorandum of Action it signed with the Union in December 2020 on funding for revitalization of public universities (both Federal and States), renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU Agreement and the deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution.

Other demands of the union as listed by ASUU include Earned Academic Allowances, State Universities, promotion arrears, withheld salaries, and non-remittance of third-party deductions.

Prof. Ashiru the UNILAG ASUU chairman described the arrears payment as “long-overdue”, saying that the core demands of ASUU have not been met.

The circular read, “The leadership of our Branch has been inundated with calls concerning the recent payment of the long-overdue arrears of the consequential adjustment of the minimum wage.

“Our members are reminded that this is not one of the core demands upon which the ongoing strike action is premised.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the demands of our Union are the conclusion of the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, abrogation of the fraudulent and corrupt IPPIS scheme and the deployment of UTAS, payment of promotion arrears, the proliferation of State Universities and governance issues amongst others.

“While our Union welcomes this unsolicited payment, our members should please conserve the funds and spend wisely so as to energize our struggle until all our demands are satisfactorily met
Our Union commends the resolve and sacrifice of our members in enthroning a University system that is globally competitive.

“United we bargain! Divided we beg! A people united can never be defeated. Solidarity forever”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that ASUU declared a 1 -month warning strike on February 14th, 2022 and extended it by 12 weeks after the expiration of its warning strike.

Recall that their polytechnic counterpart known as ASUP have also embarked on a two-week warning strike with a threat it could extend it by the first week in June if the Federal Government fails to meet its demands.

Man gets life in prison for raping, robbing student at UNILAG

An Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on Tuesday sentenced a man, Collins Okechukwu, to life imprisonment for raping and robbing a 25-year-old student (name withheld) at the University of Lagos.

Delivering judgement, Justice Abiola Soladoye, who described Okechukwu as a “pathological liar,” held that prosecution proved the charges of rape and robbery against Okechukwu beyond reasonable doubt.

The judge sentenced Okechukwu to life imprisonment for rape, and 21 years’ imprisonment for robbery.

The judge, however, ordered that the two sentences should run concurrently.

She said, “The testimony of the defendant portrayed him as a pathological liar in the sense that he claimed that University of Lagos Guest House was fully booked and the survivor was sex starved, which made them have sex on bare floor.

    “This is unbelievable and watery.

“The defendant lured the survivor into the Admin Block, brought out a pistol, raped her and robbed her of her valuables thereafter.

“The claim of the defendant to have met the survivor at the guest house and she agreed to have sex with him was consistently laced with irregularities and found unreliable.

“The defendant is found guilty as charged, of the two offences, and thereby sentenced to life imprisonment in respect to rape and 21 years’ jail term for robbery.

    “The sentences shall run concurrently.

“He should have his name entered in the Sex Offenders Register of the Lagos State Government.”

Sholadoye also cautioned female students in tertiary institutions against giving out their telephone numbers to strangers.

“What manner of a woman is the victim herself? She should desist from giving out her numbers for unnecessary frolicking,” the judge said.

Four witnesses testified at the trial and three exhibits tendered.

According to prosecution counsel, Mr Peter Owolabani, the convict committed the crimes on Dec. 17 , 2017, at 9.00 p.m. behind the Faculty of Arts Building, UNILAG.

He said that the convict also robbed the survivor of her phones, money and a gold chain.

He also submitted that the survivor met the convict one year after the incident, invited him to her supposed birthday party and got him arrested.

2022: Yemi Osinbajo receives NUGA Torch of Unity

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has received the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) Torch of Unity.

The torch was presented to the vice president by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Toyin Ogundipe, Board Members of NUGA Games alongside the Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare, on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The 2022 NUGA games, which will be hosted by Unilag, comes up from March 16 to March 26.

Osinbajo, who described sports as a unifier, said he was truly honoured to receive the Torch of Unity and thanked Ogundipe and his team for the gesture.

“As a proud alumnus of UNILAG, it is heartwarming to see us hosting NUGA again, 24 years after a highly successful and colourful outing in 1998.

“And I am more than certain that you will bring the capacity for delivering excellence, which Unilag is known for, to bear on the games again this year.

“Sport has always been a great unifier; it offers us an opportunity to step outside our sometimes contentious divisions to embrace one another in support of our teams or in healthy competition and camaraderie.

“The virtues of discipline, dedication, and teamwork, which are indispensable to success in every sporting endeavour, remind us of what it takes to inspire the best in each other and to accomplish great things when we set our minds to the task.’

“As our young men and women from universities across Nigeria gather in Lagos in March to compete in a range of sporting events, we will once again get a chance to see the abundance of talent that makes Nigeria such a special country indeed.’’

He said that for years, NUGA had not only provided a platform that showed the value that every part of the country had to offer, it had also provided a platform for the discovery and honing of individual sporting talent.

Osinbajo said that many of such talents had gone on to represent Nigeria successfully on the world stage.

The vice president listed some Nigerian sportsmen and women who were products of the NUGA games.

He named former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Vincent Enyema, sprinter, Olusoji Fasoba, Olabisi Afolabi, Chika Chukwumerije, Super Falcon’s ex goalkeeper, Precious Dede, Edith Agoye, Seyi Olonfijana, Mutiu Adepoju, among others.

He said that the socio-economic value of the NUGA games was not lost.

Osinbajo urged the athletes who would be competing in the 2022 games and representing their respective universities to do so proudly and in true sportsmanship.

“This is only a prelude to bigger achievements and greater laurels for yourselves and for Nigeria.

“As an administration we are committed to ensuring that you receive all the support you need at every stage of your exceedingly promising careers.

“We commend the administration of UNILAG led by its able vice chancellor for all the work you have done to facilitate a successful tournament.

“We trust Lagos to give us a show like no other. We are after all, Eko for Show!’’ he said.

Earlier in his remarks, Ogundipe said that no fewer than 10,000 students were expected to participate in the games.

He said that the games would be made better than the previous ones as it would a city competition; city sports.

“What do we mean by that? We don’t want to localise everything to Akoka; we are going to make use of the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

“We are going to make use of Rowe Park; we want to be such that the people that are coming from outside Lagos will feel the Lagos atmosphere.

“We are going to bring culture into it; we are going to bring so many other things into it; moving it outside Akoka means we intend to be involved in the commercial activities.

“When you have a competition in Teslim Balogun Stadium, definitely, there are some commercial activities that will go on around that place and that will make them to feel the impulse of the competition,’’ he said.

On his part, Dare said that 76 universities had signed on to the forthcoming NUGA and expressed optimism that over 100 universities would sign on before the games would start in March.

“The greatest community where you can find talents; that can produce talents for our national teams will come from such games as the NUGA games.

“So, we see here a great potential; and that’s why as a ministry, and as a government, we lash on to bringing back the spirit of NUGA,’’ he said.

COVID-19: UNILAG approves reopening of hostels for second semester exams

Authorities of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka have approved the reopening of hostels to students ahead of the second semester examinations.

This was contained in a notice to the students entitled, “Schedule of Accommodation of Bonafide Students with Allocated Bed Spaces in the Hostels for 2nd Semester 2019-2020 In-Person Examinations.”

A copy of the notice on Wednesday revealed that the hostels would be opened to qualified students from Thursday next week.

The admittance of students into the hostels, however, comes with a series of conditions as authorities move to curb the spread of COVID-19 which is in its third wave in Nigeria.

“On the authority of Senate, the University presents this schedule to accommodate legal occupants in the hostels for the in-person 2nd semester 2019-2020 examinations,” said the notice signed by the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Ademola Adeleke.

“Eligible students are expected to abide strictly by the schedule and guidelines for admittance into the Halls of Residence.”

As part of the conditions, the students must be registered for the current semester and present a coloured docket for the examinations.

They were also required to present a bottle of hand sanitiser, at least 10 face masks – which they will wear into and out of the hostels – and use the bed spaces allocated to them.

According to the accommodation schedule for the examinations, 100 and 200 level students with allocated bed spaces are to move into the hostels from August 26 and depart on or before September 11, while 500 level Faculty of Law students will move in on August 28 and leave on September 5, 2021.

Similarly, 300 level students with allocated bed space are expected should move into their hostels on September 11 and depart on September 18, while the 400 and 500 level students will enter the hostels on September 18 and move out on September 26.

“Regulations with associated penalties for hostel residency are still applicable and must be obeyed by all students,” the notice added.

COVID-19: UNILAG extends deadline for vacation of halls of residence

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has extended the deadline issued to students to vacate halls of residence to prevent COVID-19 spread.

The institution made the disclosure in a statement issued on Thursday by its Principal Assistant Registrar, Mrs Nonye Oguama.

Oguama said that the deadline had been extended from noon of Thursday to noon of Friday.

She said that the extension was to ease the burden of transportation on the students.

She added that the university had dissociated itself from a report asking the students to return to campus on Monday.

“This is fake news and did not originate from the university,” Oguama said.

She described the report as malicious and misleading, saying that the lives of the students were of paramount concern to the university.

She urged the students and the general public to disregard the information, saying that lectures for the remaining part of the semester would be delivered virtually with effect from July 26.

The Senate of the university had, after an emergency meeting on Wednesday, directed all students to vacate their halls of residence with immediate effect.

The aim is to further check the spread of COVID-19 on campus.

The senate also directed that the halls of residence would be locked indefinitely, and advised students to move all their personal effects at once.

It said that lectures for the remaining part of the semester would be delivered virtually.

UNILAG shuts hostels after students test positive for COVID-19, resumes virtual learning

The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has ordered students to vacate hostels on campus over fears of COVID-19.

There were fears in the university community on Tuesday after a number of students contracted the disease. The development led the school management to convey an emergency Senate meeting on Wednesday.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the Senate said the students who tested positive for the disease, are being treated, and contact tracing already in place.

“The situation is, indeed, worrisome especially noting the reluctance of the
majority of students to comply with the COV1D-19 prevention protocols,” the statement read.

“To avoid the escalation of cases on campus, the University Senate at an
emergency meeting held on Wednesday, 14th of July 2021 approved that all
students vacate the halls of residence by 12.00 pm on Thursday indefinitely.
Lectures for the rest of the semester will continue to be delivered virtually
with effect from 26th July 2021.”

Sources within the school equally confirmed receiving a Whatsapp broadcast message from the Dean of Students Affairs (DSA) informing them to leave the school’s hostels.

“Lectures for the rest of the semester will be delivered virtually with effect from 26th July 2021,” the message added.

Before now, UNILAG’s management had raised the alarm over “flu-like symptoms which are similar to COVID-19.

“The Medical Centre hereby assures all members of the university community, that all necessary actions in line with the federal and Lagos State Government guidelines have been taken regarding this potential threat in our community.”

Panic in UNILAG as Medical Centre records increase in symptoms similar to COVID-19 from patients

The University of Lagos yesterday announced that the institution is currently handling what appears to be the third wave of COVID-19 as there has been an increase in the number of patients presented to the university’s Medical Centre with flu-like symptoms which are similar to COVID-19.

The university therefore disclosed that all necessary actions in line with the Federal and Lagos State Government guidelines have been taken regarding this potential threat in the university’s community.

According to a statement posted on the website of the university, it became imperative to inform members of the institution due to the increase in the cases recorded at the medical centre.

According to the statement: “The University of Lagos Medical Centre wishes to inform all members of the University of Lagos Community about what appears to be the start of a potential third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Lagos State.

“The Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-olu, in his press statement issued on July 11, 2021, stated that since the beginning of July, there has been a steep increase in the number of daily confirmed cases, with the test positivity rate going from 1.1% at the end of June 2021, to its current rate of 6.6% as at the 8th of July 2021. This is with a concurrent increase in the occupancy rate at Lagos State isolation centres.

“The University of Lagos community has also been affected by this potential third wave, with an increase in the number of patients presented to the University of Lagos Medical Centre with flu-like symptoms which are similar to COVID-19.

“The Medical Centre hereby assures all members of the university community that all necessary actions in line with the Federal and Lagos State Government guidelines have been taken regarding this potential threat in our community.

“Despite this threat to the return of normalcy, pursuit of education and daily livelihood, it has become imperative once more to judiciously adhere to the COVID-19 guidelines and protocols in order to curb the spread of this disease.
