    Unilorin unveils 48 new professors

    Management of University of Ilorin have announced the promotion of 48 of its academic staff members to the rank of professors.

    The bulletin issued on Monday by the university stated that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, disclosed this at a meeting he held with the new professors at the university.

    Egbewole said that 59 others were also elevated to the rank of associate professor in the latest promotion exercise carried out by the institution.

    The vice-chancellor, who is also the Secretary-General of Association of West African Universities (AWAU), said that the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, had approved the request of the university’s Appointments and Promotion Committee.

    This, he said, culminated in the promotion of the new professors from their previous positions of readers/associate professors.

    Egbewole further stated that the approval of the minister was necessitated by the absence of a properly-constituted Governing Council for the university, which ought to have discharged the responsibility.

    He congratulated the new professors for attaining the peak of their careers, even as he expressed confidence in their dignity and competence.

    The vice-chancellor, while stating that the promotions were meritorious and well-deserved, commended their dedication to the achievement of the institution’s corporate objectives through quality teaching, meaningful research and impactful community services.

    He encouraged the newly-promoted dons not to rest on their oars, but work harder on their responsibilities so as to justify the confidence reposed in them by the authorities of the university and the society at large.

    Speaking earlier, the Registrar, Mr Mansur Alfanla, congratulated the new professors on their promotion to the pinnacle of the teaching career.

    Responding on behalf of the newly-promoted professors, Prof. Jaiye Opadiji, of the Department of Computer Engineering, expressed profound gratitude to the vice-chancellor and the management for their consistent support which culminated in the attaining the peak of their career.

    Opadiji said that they were not unaware of the expectations from them, assuring the management of their continued dedication to the services of the institution and humanity.

    He also pledged their determination to intensify efforts toward advancing the university’s academic excellence and overall success.

    UNILORIN male staff now to enjoy paternity leave

    Mr Mansur Alfanla, the Registrar of University of Ilorin, UNILORIN on Monday announced that concerned male staff of the university are now to enjoy paternity leave.

    Alfanla who disclosed this in Ilorin while speaking with newsmen said this is contained in the newly-revised Conditions of Service for the university’s staff.

    He added that the introduction of paternity leave was one of the significant changes in the university’s conditions of service.

    The Registrar added that the inclusion of paternity leave aligns with contemporary workplace practices that acknowledge the importance of work-life balance.

    ”Paternity Leave is for serving male officers whose spouse delivers a baby. The period of the leave shall be 14 working days.

    “Where the family of a male officer adopts a child under four months old, the officer will similarly enjoy Paternity Leave for a period of 14 working days,” he said.

    Alfanla emphasised the need for the university’s members of staff to be conversant with and adhere strictly to the revised conditions.

    “They need to download and read the document from their email boxes to stay informed.”

    He reminded staff of the core values of the institution, which he identified as excellence, service to the community, probity, and respect.

    “They must continue to uphold these values in their day-to-day activities, especially as the university is committed to fostering a supportive and equitable work environment for all its employees,” the Registrar said.

    He went on to cite the legal basis for the revision.

    Alfanla stated that it was in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 5 of the University of Ilorin Act CAP U7, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2010.

    “By virtue of all other powers enabling it on that behalf, the Conditions of Service of Staff are issued by the Governing Council, after due consultation with Senate with effect from June 30, 2023.”

    He noted that this update marks a significant change from the previous Conditions of Service, which were last revised on Nov. 21, 2014.

    ”The university administration’s proactive approach to adapt to evolving needs and standards is expected to positively impact the overall well-being and satisfaction of its staff,” the Registrar assured.

    UNILORIN announces dates for its 2023/24 Post-UTME

    The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), says its registration for the 2023/24 Post-UTME Screening exercise which started on Nov. 23 will end on Dec. 3.

    Mr Mansur Alfanla, Registrar of the University, said in a press statement on Friday that the institution had invited all candidates, who had applied for admission into the University to the Post-UTME screening.

    He noted that applicants for the screening must have chosen the university as first choice, either at UTME or Direct Entry level.

    The Registrar called on prospective candidates to visit the university website at: www.unilorin.edu.ng for details of the procedure for the Post-UTME screening exercise.

    He said, to be eligible, UTME candidates must have scored at least 180 in the UTME examination conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

    Alfanla advised candidates to log on to the University website, www.unilorin.edu.ng; using https://portal.unilorin.edu.ng/ug/candidate/login or visit https://portal.unilorin.edu.ng and click on Post-UTME Registration.

    He warned candidates against using any other link, adding that enquires should be directed to  pre-admission@unilorin.edu.ng.

    Unilorin announces date to resume 2023/2024 session

    The new academic session of the University of Ilorin will begin on December 4 when the new and returning students are expected back on campus.

    The institution’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, while announcing this in a statement said this decision was taken by the University Senate at its 298th meeting on Tuesday.

    “Lectures will commence in earnest on December 18 after all registration formalities might have been completed,” he said.

    Akogun went on to disclose that the matriculation of the fresh students has been slated to hold on January 29 2024.

    The Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin (Unilorin), Prof. Wahab Egbewole, says the university has produced 36 patents geared towards impacting the society and developing the nation.

    The vice chancellor disclosed this on Saturday in Ilorin while speaking at a weeklong combined 37th and 38th (2021/2022) convocation ceremony of the institution.

    He said the patents were produced with the Federal Government through the national office of technology acquisition and promotion to boost research and innovation.

    Egbewole said the number of patents were produced in various disciplines, including Medicine, Agriculture, Engineering and Information Technology.

    According to him, Unilorin is committed to fostering a culture of excellence, critical thinking and lifelong learning.

    The vice chancellor explained that the graduates of the institution are trained with a strong foundation of making meaningful contribution to nation building.

    Egbewole noted that the remarkable milestones achieved by the university in terms of ranking was a testament to the hard work and dedication of staff and students.

    He advised the graduands to be of good behaviour and seek for knowledge at all times.

    A total of 10,757 graduands were awarded first Degrees, Diploma, Postgraduate Diplomas and PhDs at the ceremony.

    Unilorin reacts as student commits suicide

    The management of University of Ilorin on Wednesday condoled with the family of Miss Hameedat Sanni, the student who allegedly killed herself over financial transactions.

    A statement by the university’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, said the institution’s management viewed the incident with sadness.

    “It was the most horrible way to die, especially for a promising young lady who had every opportunity before her to make it big in life”.

    Akogun expressed the university management’s sympathy with the parents, siblings, friends and colleagues of the deceased and prayed that God gives them the fortitude to bear the loss.

    The management then counselled students of the university to be wary of the company they keep in order not to fall into the traps of scammers.

    “The University of Ilorin is reputed to be a bastion of moral and academic education.

    ” We are surprised that any of our students, upon all the moral and academic instructions inculcated in them, could have associated with such undesirable element of a supposed boy friend, and even went ahead to take the extreme step of taking her own life,” it lamented.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 20-year-old Sanni reportedly committed suicide after lending a boy she met on the social media platform, Snapchat, the sum of N500,000.

    According to managers of the private hostel she resided in before her demise, Sanni was undergoing her SIWES programme before the incident happened.

    The management asserted that the cause of her death was not unrelated to the pressure from the app agents, who were demanding fast repayment.

    The situation was further compounded by her brother’s inability to assist her financially, thereby leading to depression.

    Convocation: Unilorin graduates 450 students with 1st class

    Prof. Wahab Egbewole, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ilorin (Unilorin), says 450 students bagged first class out of  25,234 graduating in the combined 37th and 38th convocation ceremony of the institution.

    Egbewole disclosed this on Wednesday in Ilorin at news conference to mark the beginning of the 37th and 38th combined convocation ceremony of the university.

    He said that the institution would be convoking a total number of 25,234 students during the combined ceremony.

    “We have 14,477 students for the 37th convocation ceremony in the 2020/2021 Academic session that will be convoking.

    “On the other hand, we shall be graduating 10,757 students for the 38th convocation ceremony who are for the 2021/2022 Academic session,” he said.

    The vice-chancellor explained that there were 211 First Class and 4,143 Second Class Upper Division in the 37th convocation ceremony.

    He added that in the 38th convocation, 239 bagged First Class while 3,406 were with Second Class Upper Division.

    Similarly, Egbewole stated that President Bola Tinubu would inaugurate not less than 15 completed projects at the combined convocation ceremony.

    He listed the Faculty of Clinical Science building, Advancement Centre building, Department of Anatomy building and Extension of Students Affairs Office as some of the projects slated for inauguration.

    Others were the Department of Chemical Engineering building, Faculty of Engineering 400 square capacity studio and Asphalt laid on the existing road from the university gate to Senate building, among others.

    Egebwole said the institution was renowned for its reputation for academic prowess and its integrity remained intact.

    He said that the vision of the Unilorin was to be reckoned as a 21st century university and the best in Africa through well planned and coordinated strategies.

    “By this, the university will be the industry leader in Nigeria, the best or one of the topmost 10 in Africa and one of the best 500 in the world,” he stated.

    Egbewole pledged management resolve to continue to foster an atmosphere that nurtures creativity, critical thinking and a deep sense of social responsibility.

    The vice- chancellor assured that the large landmass of the institution would be utilised as the university is talking with the Oriental Energy Farms for a large commercial agriculture.

    He however noted the issue of land encroachment and assured that the university would commence perimeter fencing of the institution for security purposes.

    President Tinubu to commission projects at Unilorin

    The authorities of University of Ilorin, Unilorin say President Bola Tinubu, the institution’s Visitor, will on Oct. 23 commission some projects its administration recently completed.

    Mr Kunle Akogun, the university’s Director of Corporate Affairs, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, highlighting the institution’s combined 37th and 38th convocation ceremonies.

    “Both the graduates of the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 academic sessions will be receiving their First degrees, Postgraduate degrees and Diplomas.

    “The programme is full of ceremonies over three days, holding at the university’s Main Auditorium from Friday to Oct. 23,” he said.

    Akogun stated that the ceremonies begin on Friday with a Special Jumaat Service, followed by an Inter-denominational Church Service on Sunday.

    The Unilorin spokesperson explained that some of the highlights of the event include the presentation of a drama titled “Jeong Do-Jeon (The Clash of Power)”.

    ”It is a Korean drama written by Jung Hyun-min, and it will hold at the Performing Arts Theatre of the university.

    “A major highlight of the ceremonies is the Convocation Lecture to be delivered by Nigerian U.S.-based Professor of History, Tayo Falola, on Friday.

    “The distinguished Historian who lectures at the Department of History, University of Texas at Austin in the U.S. will be speaking on “Modernity, Modernisation and Values”.

    “This will be followed immediately by the graduation of the 2020/2021 final year students of four-year and five-year academic programmes at the same venue,” he said.

    Akogun stated further that Saturday would be the Convocation Day II for the conferment of degrees and honours on all the 2021/2022 final year students of four-year and five-year academic programmes.

    He added that Oct. 23 there will be the “grand finale” with the graduation of the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 six-year programmes as well as Postgraduate students.

    Akogun assured that the authorities of the University would leave no stone unturned to ensure the events went hitch free.

    Prof. Wahab Egbewole, the Vice-Chancellor of University of Ilorin, has assured parents and other stakeholders that all newly-admitted students would resume for their various academic programmes in October.

    Egbewole gave the assurance while speaking with newsmen on Monday in Ilorin.

    He however did not mention the specific number of candidates offered admission, and explained that the admission exercise has been practically concluded.

    The Vice-Chancellor said most of the successful candidates have been paying clearance fees to confirm the acceptance of their admission.

    “The exercise went well as the University of Ilorin remains the most sought-after university in Nigeria, considering the number of candidates who applied for admissions into the university,” he said.

    Egbewole congratulated all the successful candidates and charged them to always be of good conduct, obey the rules of the university and be good ambassadors of their respective homes and parents.

    The Vice-Chancellor, who is also the Secretary-General, Association of West African Universities (AWAU), also noted that all arrangements were being perfected to have hitch-free rain semester examinations.

    The university’s rain semester examinations began on Monday.

    The University of Ilorin (Unilorin) on Monday announced the post of Bursar of the institution which will become vacant effective from Nov.  1.

    The announcement was made in a statement issued in Ilorin by Mr Mansur Alfanla, the Registrar of the university.

    Alfanla said that the advertisement was in accordance with the provisions of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act No. 11 of 1993, as amended by Act No. 25 of 1996, and the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions (Amendment) Act 2012.

    Alfanla explained that the bursar being the Chief Financial Officer of the institution, would be responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for the day-to-day general administration and control of the financial affairs of the Unilorin.

    “He or she should provide the University Management with appropriate advice and support for all of the institution’s financial transactions, including investments,” he said.

    The registrar added that the applicant must possess a good honours degree from a recognised university in Accounting, Finance, Economics and/or related fields.

    “In addition, the applicant must be a member of a professional body, including Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), or England and Wales, or Scotland, or Ireland.

    “Others are Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN); Chartered Association of Certified Accountants (ACCA), and Institute of Certified Public Accountants (CPA); among others,” he said.

    Alfanla stated that the appointment was for a single term of five years, while salary and other conditions of service would be as approved for bursars of federal universities by the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Governing Council of Unilorin.
