UNIMAID: ASUU threatens legal action over the renaming of varsity after Buhari

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Maiduguri chapter, has threatened to take legal actions against the Federal Government’s decision to rename the institution after the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) reports that  the union, under the leadership of Chairperson, Abubakar Mshelia and Assistant Secretary, Peter declared the move by the President Bola Tinubu-led administration as “vehemently rejected and strongly condemned.”

According to the statement, the congress, which included ASUU members, representatives of the Student Union Government, and other key stakeholders, reached a unanimous decision calling for an “immediate and unconditional reversal” of the name change.

“Following extensive discussions, the congress unanimously resolved to vehemently reject and strongly condemn the decision to rename the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri,” the statement read.

The union described the decision as a “flagrant disregard for university autonomy, a disruption of cherished academic traditions, and a direct affront to the collective heritage and identity” of the university community.

ASUU-UNIMAID faulted the federal government for failing to consult widely before announcing the renaming of the university, which has existed for over 50 years.

The union labelled the renaming as “ill-conceived, arbitrary, and devoid of meaningful consultation” with the university community, alumni, stakeholders, and the general public.

“This decision represents a troubling disregard for due process and stakeholder engagement in governance,” the union stated.

ASUU-UNIMAID also disclosed that its executive committee has been mandated to pursue legal options in order to reverse the renaming decision.

It said it would explore all available legal avenues to protect the institution’s original identity and uphold the autonomy of Nigerian public universities.

The statement further urged other ASUU branches, zonal bodies, and the national leadership to resist any attempt by the National Assembly to formalise the name change through legislation.

Reaffirming its stance, the union emphasised that public universities must remain insulated from political influence and cautioned against any future attempts to rename institutions without broad-based consultation.

“The union demands that the autonomy and integrity of public universities must be upheld without political interference,” it added.

  • BREAKING: Tinubu renames UniMaid after Buhari

BREAKING: Tinubu renames UniMaid after Buhari

President Bola Tinubu has renamed the University of Maiduguri (UniMaid) after the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports President Tinubu announced the renaming of UniMaid after Buhari at a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held in honour of the former president in Abuja on Thursday.

The university located in Borno State, hitherto known and called University of Maiduguri or UniMaid, will now be known as Muhammadu Buhari University (MBU), Maiduguri.

Speaking during the special expanded FEC session, Tinubu praised Buhari’s legacy of discipline, patriotism, and moral uprightness, calling his life one of quiet courage and unwavering service to Nigeria.

“Today, we gather under a heavy shadow, drawn from the silence that surrounds a departed leader and the immense weight of a ‎life whose absence will be felt for generations.

“We meet to honour a man whose presence once commanded this very room, whose voice once summoned the best in us, and whose ‎convictions never bowed, even to the strongest winds of public opinion,” the president said.

Tinubu described Buhari as a “patriot, soldier, and elder statesman” who dedicated his life to national unity and progress.

“President Buhari’s life was one of austere honour. He stood, ‎always, ramrod straight; unmoved by the temptation of power, ‎unseduced by applause and unafraid of the loneliness that often visits those who do what is right, rather than what is popular.”

‎”His was a quiet courage, a righteousness that never announced itself. His patriotism was lived more in action than in words. His life traced the arc of Nigeria’s journey,” he said.

‎Tinubu reflected on Buhari’s military years, describing him as a gallant soldier who helped preserve Nigeria’s unity during critical times.

He commended Buhari’s democratic legacy, noting how he placed trust in the people and led with restraint and integrity.

“When he was sworn in as our party’s first elected President, he led with restraint, governed with dignity, and bore the burdens of leadership without complaint.

The president said that those who knew him most intimately understood that the authority of that exalted office never changed him.

According to Tinubu, in the face of pressure, he remained calm; in the face of crisis, he remained resolute and in the face of triumph, he remained modest.

He urged Nigerians to uphold Buhari’s values: humility in power, discipline in service and compassion in governance.

Tinubu thanked the Inter-Ministerial Committee, led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume, and Gov Dikko Radda, for organising a befitting State Funeral within 48 hours.

Meanwhile, ‎Senate President Godswill Akpabio at the special FEC meeting hailed Buhari as a principled leader who governed with honour and simplicity.

“As a minister in his cabinet, appointed by him, I saw President Buhari unplugged. He was not flamboyant, far from it. His voice was measured. His steps, deliberate.

“His public demeanor, austere. But beneath that calm exterior beat the heart of a patriot—unyielding, unbending, and utterly uninterested in personal comfort when duty called,” he said.

‎Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass, described Buhari as a mentor, a moral compass, and a steady guide to the nation’s leaders.

‎In his response, Yusuf Buhari, son of the late President, thanked Tinubu and Nigerians for the support and a dignified burial for his father.

‎He expressed gratitude for the national solidarity and urged continued prayers for his father’s eternal rest.

The session also had tributes from selected ministers who praised Buhari’s impact, character, and enduring leadership legacy.

  • Find our son’s killers, murdered UNIMAID student tells FG

Family of Mr. Dalep Dachiya, a 200 Level student of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), who was killed by members of the Boko Haram, has urged the Federal Government to fish out killers of their son.

The head of the family, Da David Dachiya, made the call at a news conference in Jos yesterday.

Such a move, according to him, will bring succour to the bereaved family and others involved.

Dalep, a native of Jing in Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau State, was abducted on January 9, by insurgents on his way to Maiduguri to resume school.

On Tuesday, the insurgents released a video showing where Dalep was gruesomely murdered by the sect.

But at the press conference, David, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), called on government and security agents to intensify efforts in ending insurgency and other security challenges currently bedevilling the country.

He said: “As a family, we just want to thank God for everything; we believe that what happened; happened for good.

“But we want to strongly call on the government to fish out the killers of our son. He was just an innocent boy who was killed for no reason.

“We equally urge the government to intensify efforts in fighting insurgency and all forms of insecurity in the country.”

Also, the National President of Mupun Cultural Development Association (MUCDA), Chief Pedro Dafur, said the association was saddened by Dalep’s mindless killing by some blood thirsty individuals.

Dafur called on government to ensure the safety of Plateau State citizens residing in Maiduguri and other parts of Borno State.

He added: “From the utterances of the boy who killed our son in the video released, it is obvious that Plateau State citizens residing in north-eastern part of the country are not safe.

“So, we want to call on government to work assiduously to ensure the safety of our citizens in that area.

“We still have a lot of our people in Maiduguri, a lot of our children are schooling there. So, government must act fast to address the issue.”

Senate directs UNIMAID to suspend fee hike for students

…mandates Committee to carry out investigation

The Senate has directed the management of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) to stay action on the recent increment of tuition fees for students attending the institution.

The upper chamber on Tuesday also mandated its Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFUND to investigate the matter in a bid to finding lasting solution to the issue.

The Senate’s decision to wade into the hike in fee by the institution was reached following a motion considered during plenary.

Sponsor of the motion, Senator Abubakar Kyari (APC, Borno North) bemoaned the recent decision by the UNIMAID management to increase the registration and other fees of the school from N25,000 to N129,000, an increase of over 400 percent.

“Half of the men in North-East Nigeria have received no education at all, and this figure rises to over sixty-one percent for women. It is imperative that schools in the North-East should remain of strategic national interest with overwhelming National Security importance,” Kyari said.

He said education remains a repellent and potent tool to defeat Boko Haram and also revamp the North East from under development and poverty.

According to the lawmaker, sixty-two percent of Nigerian children who are not in school live in Northern Nigeria.

Senator Kyari added, “Borno State has the highest number of people that don’t have access to education due to the Boko Haram crisis in particular.”

The lawmaker, therefore, called on all stakeholders to rise to the occasion to ensure that the fee increment is reversed due to the greater need to propagate empowerment through education at tertiary levels.

Accordingly, the upper chamber, in its resolutions, mandated its Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFUND, to also engage the Ministry of Education and stakeholders such as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), with a view to reaching consensus on a harmonised fee for all universities across the country.

“In as much as we believe in the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, NANS is on this sad note, calling on Federal
Government to make students happy by meeting the demands of the striking ASUU and Colleges of Education lecturers without
    further delay,” he stated.
