Reps panel invites VC of Nnamdi Azikiwe University

The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has invited Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, the acting Vice Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Awka, Anambra over alleged poor projects execution.

Rep. Abubakar Fulata, the Chairman of the Committee made this known in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

The invitation followed the committee’s earlier visit to UNIZIK in Awka, adding that the invitation was not to a witch-hunt on the VC.

He said the committee would not fold their arms and allow certain things that would halt the expected progress in the nation’s universities persist.

The committee observed that the data presented in the documents submitted by the VC did not align with the reality on ground in terms of projects execution.

Fulata wondered how the management of the university would claim to have generated N1.5 billion in a preceding year but said it spent about N3 billion from the same internally generated revenue.

Fulata said spending money without appropriation by the parliament was a gross violation of the constitution.

He said that presentation of cooked figure undermines the integrity of the entire management team of the university.

The committee said the oversight visit became necessary due to the calls and concerns raised by many Nigerians that several MDAs would do better if legislators carry out their roles as expected.

The committee said there would be no justification to approve funds for any government organisation if what has been earlier approved was haphazardly utilized.

The committee said it observed several discrepancies and infractions in the documents presented, urging the VC to appear before them in the National Assembly with relevant documents for further legislative actions.

The committee noted that one of the areas of concern is 100 per cent payment for a project that was less than 40 per cent completion by the school management.

This according to the committee is against financial regulations.

Orgy Party: UNIZIK SUG, hotel manager deny involvements in viral X-rated video

The Nnamdi Azikwe University Akwa, ( UNIZIK)Students’ Union Government (SUG) has distanced the institution and its students from a sex party that was held in a hotel close to the campus over the weekend.

There is an online video presently circulating online with clips of male and female persons engaging in live sex at the poolside of a hotel and it was recorded by onlookers who cheered the participants.

The video sparked uproar on Monday when most commentators identified the participants to be students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, who stayed back in their hostels, despite the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Meanwhile, a social media user, @itz_daddyjoe, who leaked the video, also noted that the sex party was held on Saturday, September 3, at the Wintess Garden Hotel in Ifite Awka, Anambra State, which is one of the hotels located around UNIZIK main campus.

He further alleged that persons seen in the sex romps video, in the full glare of all who stood to watch, were students of UNIZIK.

”It is very unfortunate that the school environment which most of us graduated from is turning into something else. I bet that’s why I couldn’t live in Ifite Awka during my University days. A sex party at Wintess Garden Hotel Ifite Unizik is condemnable…,” he wrote.

However, the institution’s SUG president and its secretary Charles Ijeomah and JN Ogbonnaya has released a statement distancing the institution’s students from the act.

The statement reads in part: “This is to inform the public that students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University have nothing to do with the event that happened on 3rd September. It was not a students’ programme.

“The “Night Wear Party” which featured live porn of people engaging in sexual acts, is morally wrong and condemned by the Students Union Government Executives, is being organized around students’ residential area.

“In conclusion, “The Night Wear Party” is a personal business of some show promoters in Awka, and has nothing to do with the University or our students. We are known for moral decency, as we all study to be certified ‘in Character and Learning.’”

However, while the SUG confirmed that the said party was held at Wintess Garden Hotel, Ifite, on the said date, but dissociated her students from the porn video; the Management of the hotel,

General Manager of Wintess Garden Hotel & Suites Limited, where  the act was said to have taken place has also reacted

Obumneme Azoruwa denies that the activities took place at the hotel

, “Our attention has been drawn to the video clips that have gone viral.

“We hereby use this medium to inform the general public that such an immoral act never happens in our hotel. This is only a concocted story by mischief makers to bring our name to the mud.

“Our Hotel is one of the best hotels in Awka and duly registered with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and we cannot condescend to the level of promoting and condoning open sexual acts and the likes.

“We, therefore, urge the general public and our numerous customers to disregard such rumours because it never happened at Wintess Garden Hotel & Suites Limited.”

  • Meteorology station in UNIZIK not functioning, Miss Nigeria cries out

…Says ‘FG should compel children of public officials to study in Nigeria’

The 40th Miss Nigeria, Chioma Obiadi, has cried out over the poor funding of government owned schools in Nigeria with particular reference to the Nnamdi Azikwe University (UNIZIK) where she currently studies.

The beauty queen also advised the Federal Government to compel public office holders to ensure their children attend schools in Nigeria.

Ms. Obiadi told the newsmen in Lagos when she led the Miss Nigeria Organisation on a visit that such a policy would reduce the decadence in the nation’s educational sector.

She said that when children of public and political office holders attend schools in the country, they would be able to feed their parents back on whether such schools were experiencing deficit in teaching and learning infrastructure or adequately equipped with modern teaching aids.

The beauty queen advised that the federal government should formulate a policy that would ban government officials from sending their children abroad for study.

If this law is enacted, it will have a profound effect in terms of development in our educational sector.

Top government officials send their children abroad to get educated because those schools are well equipped and parade high standard of education.

If such Nigerians send their children abroad, then they will be less concerned about whatever is going on in the educational sector in the country since they are not directly affected.

However, if their children attend Nigerian schools, they will be concerned with the standard of education and make efforts to improve it,” she said.

The reigning queen said that she was concerned with the need to have improved teaching and learning infrastructure in schools across the country.

She said that the meteorological station of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra, where she is a student at present was suffering from deficit in infrastructure.

I am a 300-level student of the Department of Geography and Meteorology at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University and the meteorology station in my school is not functioning.

This is depriving us, the students, the opportunity to receive better knowledge of how meteorology can be deployed in interpreting and understanding weather conditions.

If a child of a minister or a highly laced government official were in the same department with me, probably, efforts will be made to ensure that this facility functions,” she said.

The beauty queen canvassed an improved quality of education for both the children of the rich and the poor because education is important in the development of any nation and its people.
