My father lost contracts due to my twerking video- UNN medical student

A student in the Department of Medical Laboratory Science at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Mirabel Obi, has claimed that her father lost contracts due to her twerking video that went viral five days ago.

Obi also alleged that she has been receiving hate speeches and outrage from her family over the incident.

TheNewsGuru recalls that on Saturday a video went viral involving Obi who twerked half-clad in front of Akpabio Hostel in a bid to win N30,000 in a competition, causing a stir on social media.

She said, “Everyday, I just keep wondering if I committed one big crime that would warrant these hate speeches from a lot of people. Like how did my life get here?

“So had it been it was a sex tape, people would expect me to kill myself? A dance that I felt was very harmless. Is it worth it?

  • UNN sets record of electricity generation with organic waste

The University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) on Tuesday set the record of electricity generation by using organic waste to install 100KVA Refuse Drived Fuel (RDF) gasification plant for its Nsukka Campus.

Prof Benjamin Ozumba, UNN Vice-Chancellor, who expressed happiness over the project during its inauguration, said the university would no longer be a customer to Enugu Electricity Distribution Company
    (EEDC).

He said the project was first of its kind in Nigeria and described it as another feather added to the cap of the institution.

“I am happy that the university under my watch has witnessed innovations and transformation, as today another feather has been added to the cap of my administration.

“This is the first of its kind in the country, using of waste to generate electricity.

“By the time more of the plants are produced that will cover every part of the university, millions of naira will be saved every month, as UNN will longer pay monthly electricity bill to EEDC,” he said.

The VC also commended Prof Emenike Ejiogu-led research team that produced the RDF gas plant.

In his remark, Ejiogu from the Department of Electrical Engineering applauded Ozumba on his belief of making record-breaking innovations to transform UNN.

“The 100 KVA RDF project is designed and fabricated by laboratory of industrial power devices and energy system under special grant by Ozumba.

“The aim is to enable UNN to generate its own electricity with organic waste that will serve as fuel,” he said.

The Japan-trained engineer said his research team was set to produce 250KVA plants, which will supply the energy
need of the entire university and its environ.

“UNN power demand now is 3mgwats, so with twelve 250KVA of RDF plants, we will meet electricity supply need of
    the university,” he said.

He said on request, his research team was ready to install the RDF plants to any individual, company or office who needed it.

“It is cheaper and can carry more loads than solar energy installation.

“With RDF plant in your house or office, it will carry your air-condition, deep freezers, pressing iron and other things in your house, office or company,” he said.

Ejiogu listed some of the organic waste that could be used as waste materials to power the plant to include: agricultural byproducts such as corn husks, wood chips among others.

He said the plant would create employment for many people through supplying of waste to UNN or other people who would be using the plant,” he said.

Some UNN staff in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria described the innovation as one of the greatest legacies of Ozumba.

  • UNN emerges best in 2018 statistics competition

The University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), has emerged best out of 20 tertiary institutions that participated in the Nigeria Statistical Association (NSA) Competition, organised for undergraduates of statistics.

Mr Emmanuel Ugwu, came overall best out of 60 final year students of statistics, who participated in the competition held at National Mathematical Centre on Friday in Sheda, FCT, Abuja.

The competition started on May 14 and ended May 18. Also 20 participants won different categories of medals; three gold, seven silver and 10 bronze medals.

In his address, the NSA president, Prof. Sidney Onyeagu, said that the competition which was centred on probability distribution was aimed at rekindling the interest of students in statistics.

Onyeagu observed that the competition would further build the students’ interest in statistics, as a career prospect as well as improve on their communication and knowledge in certain difficult areas of statistics.

Earlier in his remark, Prof. Stephen Onah, Director/Chief Executive, National Mathematical Centre (NMC), said that the programme was aimed at stimulating interest of undergraduates in statistics.

Onah noted that the exercise would equally prepare students of statistics to better understand the difficult areas as well as improve their knowledge and confidence in the subject for any global competition.

“In pursuing its mandate, NMC has been organising similar competitions for students of mathematics from Nigerian Universities.

“Also the centre is trying to reactivate competition in computer science, which has been put off due to lack of facilities at the centre,” he said.

He, therefore, assured the medallists that the centre would find ways to assist them to access sponsorship for higher studies in statistics and related disciplines.

The winner of the competition, Ugwu attributed his success to determination, hard work and concentration on the subject area.

  • Nigerian drone start-up gets first venture funding at UNN

The drone company, Arone, says it has gotten the first venture funding of a start-up at the new business incubator, Roar Nigeria at the University of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka.

Mr Chinwe Okolo, Site Incubator Manager in a statement in Abuja on Friday said the funding was a milestone achievement for the incubator showing it had become a start-up hot spot in Southeast Nigeria.

‘’We got an investment of N2 million – about 5,556 dollars from two investors, Chibuzo Ujam and Echkwudi Daniel, for equity in Arone’s parent company, Magic Mirror to build our prototype drone.

“We are on schedule to complete our prototype by the end of March,’’ Arone founder, Mr Emmanuel Ezenwere was quoted as saying.

Ezenwere said the funding was also a milestone for the company, which was now ready to start hardware investments and major prototyping of its business idea.

He said Arone had an idea to create a network of charging stations for drones in Nigeria in order to facilitate and increase the speed of deliveries in Nigeria.

“An example is the ability of medicine or blood being able to be sent very quickly to patients in rural areas or making fast deliveries of groceries in cities with traffic problems.

“Arone has world class technical ideas and knowledge and the drone idea is one of those golden nuggets you seldom see,’’ he said.

Ezenwere said the incubator Roar Nigeria started in 2016 and now has 12 start-ups in areas ranging from eHealth to mobile services and hardware solutions.

According to him, one of the many achievements of the Vice Chancellor of UNN, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba in collaboration with Benefiting Our Communities (BOC) innovations, a private sector organisation led by Charles Emembolu.

The incubator is run in close relationship with Ideon Science Park of Sweden.

“So smart, still relatively simple to understand and with a huge need in the market. I have no doubt that these guys will create groundbreaking things,’’ the External Incubator Manager Jonas Michanek was quoted as saying.

Michanek is a Swedish entrepreneur from Ideon Science Park in Sweden, helping to set up the incubator, Roar Nigeria at UNN, Nsukka.
