Former US president’s wife, Michelle Obama loses mum

The mother of Former United States first lady, Michelle Obama’s Mother, Marian Robinson has kicked the bucket according to report from her family.

Robinson moved into the White House with the first family, helping care for her young granddaughters and providing a stabilizing presence in one of the world’s most stressful residences when the Obamas were running the affairs in the US.

“We needed her. The girls needed her. And she ended up being our rock through it all,” her family said in a statement. Robinson was 86.

Late Robinson hugged headlines as she was present present for some of the Obama family’s most visible moments, often appearing at holiday celebrations or other events alongside the first couple and their two daughters, Sasha and Malia.

It would be recalled that on election night in 2008, she was famously photographed holding her son-in-law Barack Obama’s hand while the two sat on a couch as results poured in, sweeping him into office as the nation’s first Black president.

“At every step, as our families went down paths none of us could have predicted, she remained our refuge from the storm, keeping our feet on solid ground,” the statement read.

She was born in 1937 and grew up on the South Side of Chicago, one of seven children, before studying to become a teacher and working as a secretary.

She married her husband, Fraser Robinson, in 1960, and the couple had two children, Michelle Obama and her brother Craig Robinson, both of whom were also raised on the South Side.

Fraser Robinson died in 1991 after a long battle with multiple sclerosis.

Easter Sunday: US president, Biden declares March 31st Transgender Day

Joe Biden the United States President  has declared today Easter Sunday “Transgender Day of Visibility.”

Recall that the International Transgender Day of Visibility was created on March 31, 2009, and has continued to be celebrated every March 31.

It was a  day  created to honour transgender people and raise awareness of the discrimination they continue to face.

However, it has been revealed that Biden’s declaration was backed by the US Constitution.

According to Biden: “Now, therefore, I, Joseph R. Biden Jr., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim March 31, 2024, as Transgender Day of Visibility.

“I call upon all Americans to join us in lifting up the lives and voices of transgender people throughout our nation and to work towards eliminating violence and discrimination based on gender identity.”

Since its inception, the Biden administration has made LGBT activism a cornerstone of its policy priorities. He boasted in his statement that he appointed transgender leaders to his administration and ended the ban on transgender Americans serving openly in the military.

In the past, some of Biden’s transgender inclusivity events at the White House have backfired.

Just In: Octogenarian Biden announces re-election bid

US President Joe Biden has officially announced his bid for re-election in 2024 in the form of a three-minute video.

In a video released early Tuesday, Biden, 80, framed next year’s contest as a fight against Republican extremism, implicitly arguing he needed more time to fully realize his vow to restore the nation’s character.

“When I ran for president four years ago, I said we are in a battle for the soul of America. And we still are, the question we are facing is whether in the years ahead we have more freedom or less freedom. More rights or fewer. I know what I want the answer to be and I think you do too. This is not a time to be complacent. That’s why I’m running for reelection,” he said in the video.

The announcement sets a battle to convince the country his record merits another four years in the White House and that his age won’t impede his ability to govern.

The 46th US president argued that abortion rights, the defence of democracy, voting rights and the social safety net will be among the most important issues on the ballot in 2024.

He stated that voters will be faced with the choice of leaving the next generation with “more freedom or less” and “more rights or fewer”.

“Every generation of Americans has faced a moment when they’ve had to defend democracy, stand up for our personal freedoms, and stand up for our right to vote and our civil rights. This is ours.”

The Biden campaign will also ride on promoting the achievements made during the first two years of his presidency, stating that he needs to “finish the job. I know we can,” he said.

Biden’s official declaration ends any lingering doubts about his intentions and begins a contest that could evolve into a rematch with his 2020 rival, former President Donald Trump.

He enters the race with a significant legislative record but low approval ratings, an issue his advisers have so far been unable to solve.

Already the oldest president in history, he also confronts persistent questions about his age.

US president Biden signs same-sex marriage bill into law

President Joe Biden signed into law Tuesday landmark new federal protections for same-sex and interracial couples, capping both a personal and national evolution on an issue that’s enjoyed growing acceptance over the past decade.

According to CNN, Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act before thousands of invited guests on the South Lawn at an event the White House said reflected the importance of the moment.

“Marriage is a simple proposition. Who do you love? And will you be loyal to that person you love?” the president asked from the South Lawn. “It’s not more complicated than that.”

Biden said the law he was about to sign recognizes that “everyone should have the right to answer those questions for themselves without the government interference,” and secures the federal “protections that come with marriage.”

“For most of our nation’s history, we denied interracial couples and same sex couples from these protections,” Biden said. “It failed to treat them with equal dignity and respect. And now, this law requires an interracial marriage and same-sex marriage must be recognized as legal in every state in the nation.”

The new law officially voids the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as between a man and a woman. It mandates that states honor the validity of out-of-state marriage licenses, including same-sex and interracial unions.

Former US president, Donald Trump declares to run in 2024

The immediate past  US President, Donald Trump, has announced his decision to contest the 2024 presidency under the aegis of the Republican party.

Trump is planning to stage a return to the white House after losing his re-election bid to present president Joe Biden in 2020.

Trump made this known during a speech at his Mar-a -Lago home in Florida.

According to him, he wants to make America great and glorious again if given the mandate.

“In order to make America great and glorious again. I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,” Trump said.

Recall that Trump won the US presidency for the first time in 2016 when he contested against Hillary Clinton.

The former president’s stint at the White House – between 2017 and 2021 – was one of the most tumultuous in modern US history. He was impeached twice, and his harsh rhetoric, which critics say often veered into explicit bigotry, deeply polarised the country.

Trump has already secured some endorsements for the 2024 race, including from senior House Republican Elise Stefanik.

Trump would become the second President to retake the White House if he succeeds in 2024, thereby making him the 45th and the 47th president, respectively.

Asked if he’s got plans to fortify Ukraine’s weaponry and Army in the ongoing War, Biden replied that he doesn’t have plans to supply Ukraine long range rockets capable of reaching Russia.

“I won’t send anything that can fire into Russia,” Biden said.

Recall that the Biden administration is preparing to step up the kind of weaponry it is offering Ukraine by sending advanced, long-range rocket systems that are now the top request from Ukrainian officials.

The administration is leaning toward sending the systems as part of a larger package of military and security assistance to Ukraine, which could be announced as soon as next week.

It has wavered on whether to send the systems amid concerns raised within the National Security Council that Ukraine could use the new weapons to carry out offensive attacks inside Russia, according to officials.

On Friday, Russia warned that the United States would “cross a red line” if it supplies the systems to Ukraine.
