U.K, America warn of elevated terrorists attacks in Abuja

The United Kingdom and United States of America embassies in Nigeria yesterday cautioned that terrorists have perfected plans to cause havoc in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria.

On a message released on Sunday night, the US warned that the unnamed terror group might be targeting government buildings, schools, markets and other public places.

“There is an elevated risk of terror attacks in Nigeria, specifically in Abuja. Targets may include, but are not limited to, government buildings, places of worship, schools, markets, shopping malls, hotels, bars, restaurants, athletic gatherings, transport terminals, law enforcement facilities, and international organizations. The U.S. Embassy will offer reduced services until further notice,” the statement read.

The statement also advised US citizens living in Nigeria to avoid all non-essential travel or movement, stay alert, carry proper identification, avoid crowds, review personal security plans and keep their cell phones charged in case of emergency.

On its part, in a statement by Gill Atkinson, the United Kingdom embassy in Abuja alerted:

“I NOTICE ISSUED AT 15:48 on SUNDAY 23 OCTOBER

US teacher nabbed for having ‘kill list’ of students, teachers she works with

A 25-year-old elementary school teacher Angelica Carrasquillo-Torres, has been arrested by police officers in East Chicago, Indiana, USA for allegedly telling a student she had a ‘kill list’ that involved at least one student, herself and colleagues.

The police said they responded to a report of a threat at St. Stanislaus School, located at 4930 Indianapolis Boulevard in East Chicago, around 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

ABC News reports that when police arrived they spoke with the school’s principal and assistant principal.

They said a fifth grader reportedly told their counsellor that Carrasquillo-Torres of Griffith, Indiana made comments to them about killing herself, students and staff.

Carrasquillo-Torres also allegedly told the student that she had a list, with that student at the bottom of the list.

Police said Carrasquillo-Torres was immediately escorted to the principal’s office to discuss the incident, where the teacher allegedly told the principal she said those things and had what she called a “kill list.”

The principal then told Carrasquillo-Torres to leave and not return to the school.

Police said they were not made aware of the situation until four hours after Carrasquillo-Torres was allowed to leave the school.

According to the report, the following day, the Criminal Investigations Division was able to get an emergency detention order for the fifth-grade teacher from the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office.

Detectives took Carrasquillo-Torres into custody without further incident on Thursday around 11:15 a.m. at her home in Griffith, Indiana.

Carrasquillo-Torres has been charged with intimidation in a threat to commit a forcible felony

  • Singer, Ed Sheeran ordered to stand trial in US over claims he copied Marvin Gaye’s hit Let’s Get it On

Singer, Ed Sheeran ordered to stand trial in US over claims he copied Marvin Gaye’s hit Let’s Get it On

British singer and songwriter, Ed Sheeran will face trial in the US over claims he copied his 2014 hit ‘Thinking Out Loud’ from Marvin Gaye’s 1973 classic ‘Let’s Get It On’.

U.S. District Judge Louis Stanton in Manhattan denied Sheeran’s bid to dismiss the copyright infringement suit, saying a jury should decide on whether the two songs are substantially similar.

The move comes after Sheeran, 31, and his co-songwriters were awarded more than £900,000 in legal costs in June after winning their UK High Court copyright trial over the hit Shape of Year in March.

After that ruling six months ago, Sheeran lashed out at the ‘baseless claims’ being brought against singer-songwriters.

On Thursday, Judge Stanton said that Sheeran must now face trial in the US amid claims Thinking Out Loud is copied from Gaye’s Let’s Get It On.

The copyright infringement suit was originally lodged in 2018 – not by Gaye’s family, but by Structured Asset Sales LLC, which owns a portion of ‘Let’s Get It On’ co-writer Ed Townsend’s estate.

Structured Asset Sales (SAS) is seeking $100million in damages while alleging Sheeran and his co-writer Amy Wadge ‘copied and exploited, without authorization or credit’ the Gaye song, ‘including but not limited to the melody, rhythms, harmonies, drums, bass line, backing chorus, tempo, syncopation and looping’.

Gaye co-wrote Let’s Get It On with Edward Townsend, an American singer and songwriter who died in 2003.

They released the song in June 1973 and it hit No.1 in September that year. More than 10 years later, Gaye was shot and killed by his father, Marvin Gay Senior – whose surname is spelt differently – at their house in Hancock Park, Los Angeles, after an argument on 1 April, 1984, on the eve of his 45th birthday.

On Thursday September 29, Judge Stanton said a jury must decide whether the two songs are substantially similar because music experts on both sides of the dispute disagree whether Sheeran’s song mimics ‘Let’s Get It On.’

‘Although the two musical compositions are not identical, a jury could find that the overlap between the songs’ combination of chord progression and harmonic rhythm is very close,’ Stanton said.

An attorney for Structured Asset Sales, Hillel Parness, told Reuters the company is ‘pleased’ with the ruling.

Cuba to present resolution to lift U.S. trade embargo

Cuba will again submit a resolution against the U.S. trade embargo at this year’s United Nations General Assembly in November, Foreign Affairs Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla said.

The minister said that this would be the 30th time to present the resolution after more than 60 years of siege.

He said the resolution calling for an end to the embargo had consistently won the overwhelming support of UN members.

However, the United States “persists in ignoring the demands of the international community and has intensified the blockade to unprecedented levels,’’ Rodriguez said.

The minister said it failed to subvert the constitutional order in Cuba, but caused unjustifiable shortages, pain and suffering for Cuban families by limiting basic necessities.

Official data show in the first 14 months of U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration alone, the embargo has caused Cuba economic losses of about 6.3 billion U.S. dollars.

First imposed in 1962, the embargo was tightened by Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump, who imposed more than 240 sanctions against the island.

In 2021, a total of 184 countries voted in favour of the resolution for the 29th year in a row, with only the U.S. and Israel voting against.

2023: Nigerians in US to engage presidential candidates Nov. 26

The Nigerians in the U.S. intend to hold a debate for all the presidential candidates that are contesting the February 25, 2023 presidential election.

The presidential debate, tagged “The Diaspora Listens”, is scheduled to hold on November 26, 2022 virtually, according to a statement signed by Mr Olayinka DanSalami, on behalf of the organising committee.

The debate is being organised by the ‘Organisation for the Advancement of Nigerians (OAN, Inc.)’, in collaboration with 15 other Nigerian partner organisations in the United States.

The statement was made available to newsmen in New York on Sunday.

DanSalami said that letters of invitations had been sent to the presidential candidates.

“The United States hosts one of the largest numbers of Nigerian citizens and associations worldwide.

”They are critical to the political and socio-economic development of our dear country, in spite of the differences in , cultures and languages.

“We are also continuing to fly the Nigerian flag high as we excelled in our various endeavors.

”Thus, we believe that to actualise the Nigeria of our dream, everyone must contribute his or her own quota.

“We believe that the 2023 presidential election is a critical and consequential election that has generated so much enthusiasm, interest, and support among the Nigerian compatriots in the diaspora,’’ he stated.

DanSalami said that the election had brought about ”a patriotic clamour by Nigerians in the diaspora to have the presidential candidates talk to us.”

He added that the debate would also give the opportunity to put forward questions, suggestions and support to the candidates.

“Therefore, it has become pertinent to keep the Nigerians in the diaspora abreast of the candidates manifestos and what would be the policy thrusts of their administrations.

“Also, to keep them abreast of how their government would maximise the various opportunities that abound in Nigeria.

”And the key role that Nigerians in the diaspora would have to play towards national development in these administrations.

“The debate will provide the candidates with the opportunity to share their ideas in a moderated Question and Answer format,’’ DanSalami said.

He further stated that the event would enable Nigerians in the diaspora to have an opportunity to hear first-hand from the presidential candidates, their intentions and aspirations through an equal opportunity platform.

The ‘Diaspora Listens’ event would also provide candidates the opportunity to hear directly from the diaspora constituents about their concerns, priorities, and what they would like from the president, when elected in 2023.

“The organisers encourage all our Nigerians in the diaspora to ‘save the date’ for this crucial and important event.

“We would apprise you of the format of the debates as we confirm participation from the presidential candidates,’’ he stated.

Abacha loot: Another $23 million on the way to Nigeria from US

The Federal Government has signed an agreement with the United States of America for the repatriation of more assets stolen by the former leaders, including Late General Sani Abacha, worth $23 million.

The agreement was signed on Tuesday.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), signed the agreement on behalf of the Federal Government, while the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard, signed for the government of the United States.

The AGF, in his speech shortly before signing the agreement, said the recovered assets, which were made possible with the cooperation of the governments of United States and United Kingdom would be used in the infrastructural development of the country.

According to him, efforts were being intensified for the recovery and repatriation of more of the looted assets.

Malami noted that the fund when returned will be invested in three ongoing projects by the Federal Government, including the ongoing Abuja-Kaduna road and the 2nd Niger Bridge.

In 2006, about $723 million in Abacha loot was returned to Nigeria from Switzerland.

In 2020 equally, the US and Jersey also agreed to return over $308 million in confiscated funds to Nigeria.

Nigeria has in the past recovered several other tranches of the Abacha loot, which are proceeds believed to have been diverted from public coffers by the military administration of General Sani Abacha in the 1990s.

  • How Ghana surrendered its independence to the US – By Owei Lakemfa

How Ghana surrendered its independence to the US – By Owei Lakemfa

GHANA, the shining Black Star which in 1957 lit the way to independence for all of Africa, is today, a slave colony of the United States, US. The declaration 65 years ago by its leader, Kwame Nkrumah that: “The independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of Africa”, gave momentum to the independence movements across the continent.

Ghana followed up its declaration by providing offices and bases for liberation movements in the continent.

For this reason and the moves by Nkrumah to unite the continent into a single United States of Africa, his stiff opposition to Apartheid, transforming Ghana into the universal headquarters of the Pan Africanist movement and seeking to make Africa independent of external powers, his administration was overthrown.

The coup that toppled the Nkrumah administration was planned by the American Central Intelligence Agency, CIA, whose Deputy Director, Ray Cline, co-ordinated it from Washington, while its station chief in Ghana, Howard Bane, saw to its execution. Over 1,600 Ghanaians were killed in the coup with many injured.

The primary tasks of the coup plotters were to reverse all the gains made by the Nkrumah leadership, expel all liberation fighters given refuge and hand over the country to external forces.

One of the major beneficiaries of the 1966 coup was Edward Akufo-Addo who was named the Chief Justice. Four years into the coup, he was named the President of Ghana.

Today, 50 years after he left office, his son, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as President of Ghana, is continuing the demolition work by surrendering the independence of Ghana to the same American establishment that executed the criminal February 24, 1966 coup.

The current President Akufo-Addo had in April 2018 sworn that Ghana has “not offered a military base, and will not offer a military base to the United States of America”. But it is a matter of nomenclature as the military base was baptised as West Africa Logistics Network,WALN. Under it, America is given the right to run Ghana as a colony although the latter still maintains the privilege of marking March 6 as ‘Independence Day’.

As part of the Agreement, Ghana, through an American contractor, McDan, has handed over Terminal 1 of the Kotoka International Airport in Accra to the Americans free of charge!

The ‘Agreement’ itself is worse than the humiliating Japanese piece of surrender to the US after defeat in the Second World War. It grants American soldiers and civilian contractors the privileges, exemptions and immunity equivalent to diplomatic missions under the Vienna Convention. American soldiers can wear their uniforms and carry arms in Ghana as if they are in the US and can enter and exit Ghana without passports just with their identity cards! That is a right even Ghanaians don’t have!

Agreed facilities and areas provided by Ghana, like the runway, can be of exclusive use by American forces who are also authorised to exercise all rights and authorities for the use, operation, defence, or control of such places, including using force.

Also, the Americans can undertake construction activities on, and make alterations and improvements to agreed facilities and areas like the airport and seaport and are authorised to control entry to such places.

The agreement also provides that Ghana furnishes, without rental, all agreed facilities and areas while the Americans are afforded priority in access to and use of facilities that have been provided for joint use. Buildings constructed by US forces shall become the property of Ghana, provided that it “shall be used by United States forces until no longer needed by United States forces”.

The Americans are also empowered to retain title to all equipment, material, supplies, relocatable structures and other moveable property.

Under the Agreement, US forces are authorised to preposition and store defence equipment, supplies and materials – which does not exclude chemical and biological weapons and laboratories. They also have the right to remove such items from the territory of Ghana.

Ghana is obliged to ensure the protection, safety and security of American forces, contractors, property and official information. In other words, Ghanaian officials and citizens can be hunted like Julian Assange for alleged leakage of US information.

The agreement says if the Americans are not physically present at their facilities and areas, such places “shall remain locked and secure, and security for such facilities and areas shall be provided by Ghana”.

The Americans have the powers to conclude contracts for the acquisition of goods and services, including construction, in Ghana in accordance with United States laws and regulations.

Ghana agreed that the acquisition of goods and services in the country by or on behalf of American forces shall not be subject to any taxes, customs duties or similar charges.

Also, the Americans are not liable to pay any tax(including VAT) and are empowered to “import into, and export out of, and use in Ghana any personal property, equipment, supplies, material, technology, training or services in connection with this Agreement”.

Such importation or exportation are exempted from any inspection, licence, other restrictions, customs duties, taxes or any other charges assessed within Ghana. In other words, any American soldier can smuggle anything in and out of Ghana.

The agreement also provides that aircraft, vehicles and vessels operated by US forces may enter, exit and move freely within the territory and territorial waters of Ghana. So, America can wage war on Ghanaian territory. Also, such aircraft, vehicles and vessels are not subject to the payment of landing, parking or port fees, compulsory pilotage, navigation or over flight charges; or tolls or other use charges, including lighter age and harbour dues levied by Ghana.

Ghana also agreed to accept American driving licences and the Americans are empowered to operate telecommunication systems, and the right to use all necessary radio spectrum free of cost.

Other than contractual claims, no claims for damage, loss or destruction of property, or death or injury to any military personnel and civilian employees shall be entertained. So, American forces can damage property or kill Ghanaians without being charged. Any third party claims, say by a Ghanaian citizen, will be handled by the American Government in accordance with US laws and regulations.

The agreement can only be terminated by one year’s written notice to the other party through diplomatic channels. There is of course no reciprocal agreement giving Ghana any right or privilege in the US; it is purely an ‘Agreement’ between a slave and slave master.

The Supreme Court of Ghana had on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 ruled as unmeritorious, a suit against this slavish agreement brought by the Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser of the opposition NDC, Brogya Genfi. This was how Ghana surrendered its independence to the US.

Just In: China severs ties with US over Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan

China has announced cutting of ties with the United States to protest recent visit of the Speaker of United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.

The recent visit of Pelosi, though among America’s President Joe Biden was said to be against had drew the ire of China which saw it as an affront on her sovereignty and meddlesomeness from a top foreign government official.

As a response to the visit, China severing relations with America with her Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday announcing countermeasures.

A statement by the Ministry said the country was incest that despite China’s strong protestation against the visit Pelosi still went ahead.

The statement read: “In disregard of China’s strong opposition and serious representations, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited China’s Taiwan region. On 5 August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the following countermeasures in response:

“Canceling China-U.S. Theater Commanders Talk; Canceling China-U.S. Defense Policy Coordination Talks (DPCT); Canceling China-U.S. Military Maritime Consultative Agreement (MMCA) meetings.

“Suspending China-U.S. cooperation on the repatriation of illegal immigrants; Suspending China-U.S. cooperation on legal assistance in criminal matters; Suspending China-U.S. cooperation against transnational crimes; Suspending China-U.S. counternarcotics cooperation; Suspending China-U.S. talks on climate change.”

  • After Ukraine, US fishes for new war in Taiwanese waters – By Owei Lakemfa

    By Owei Lakemfa

IN Nigeria, there are people who traditionally rejoice at the prospect of war. They are uncomfortable when there are no wars or new territories to conquer, plunder or destabilise. The United States establishment has this same psychological make-up. It appears allergic to peace, and as one conflict drags to a bloody close, it is instigating a new one.

The US, since its painful birth by its surrogate British mother which it turned round to fight, has been perpetually at war. In fact, since its 1777 independence, it has been at war for 90 per cent of the time. If it is not carrying out genocide against the indigenous Indian population, then it would be at war with its Mexican neighbours, European cousins such as the Spanish, its Latin American ‘backyard’ countries or further afield with countries like Libya, Somalia, Egypt, Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan, France, Old Yugoslavia.

Although with no boots on the ground, it is actively involved in the on-going wars in Yemen, Syria and Ukraine. No war is too small for it as the US, like an elephant taking on an ant, has militarily fallen on fingerlings like Grenada and Panama.

The American psychology for conflict can be gleaned from its defence budget increases, from $714 billion in 2020, $768 the following year to its projected growth to $900 billion in 2030. Its Cow Boy gun culture has resulted in 393 million guns in private homes. Its war industry is also booming with the Lockheed Martin Corporation alone grossing $58.2 billion in 2020. The US between February and July, 2022 supplied $6.1 billion military aid to Ukraine in its war with Russia.

Seventeen days after the last US soldier left Afghanistan, President Joe Biden on September 15, 2021 announced a new trilateral military alliance of Australia, UK and US with the acronym, AUKUS. It was in preparation for a possible conflict with China. Now, as the Russo-Ukrainian War is beginning to lose steam with Ukraine left high and dry, the US is fishing for a new war in the waters of Taiwan. This Tuesday, August 2, 2022 the fishing game began with an official visit to Taiwan by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

This is curious because the US knows that Taiwan is not a separate state, does not recognise it as a country nor has it diplomatic relations with it having cut such ties since January 1, 1979. In fact, the world, under the United Nations, UN Resolution 2758 of October 25, 1971 delisted Taiwan as a separate country. In that resolution, the UN declared the Peoples Republic of China as “the only legitimate representative of China to the United Nations”.

Since Taiwan until then had sat in the world body as an independent country, the UN, which refused to name Taiwan by name so it does not give it any recognition, resolved to “expel forthwith the representatives of Chiang Kai-Shek (the regime occupying Taiwan) from the place which they unlawfully occupy in the United Nations and all the organisations related to it”.

The Biden administration was quick to distance itself from the Speaker’s visit with the President saying the visit is “not a good idea”. But I do not think Pelosi, who President Donald Trump valued no more than a foot-mat, would have been allowed to engage in such a high profile and potentially risky foreign relations gambit without official state backing. The constitutional duties of the American House which are to make laws and scrutinise the work of government does not include the conduct of foreign relations. Since Pelosi is no tourist looking for exotic beaches to visit, her presence in the Chinese territory is politically motivated; it might be to deliberately heighten tension between Beijing and Washington using Taiwan as a pawn.

China reacted angrily to Pelosi’s visit, but which serious country will not react to the violation of its territory? Would the US not shoot down any foreign aircraft that flies to the island group of Hawai without permission? Will the United Kingdom not react in a similar manner if Pelosi were to fly to Northern Ireland without official permission? Indeed when in 1995, the self-styled President of Taiwan, Lee Teng-hui, made a stopover in Hawaii en route to Latin America, the US denied him a visa and Teng-hui did not even disembark his aircraft.

Pelosi writing in The Washington Post of August 2, 2022 said her visit is in line with the American-Taiwanese shared interests and values of “…self-determination and self-government, democracy and freedom, human dignity and human rights”. When these Pelosi claims are subjected to the reality of the American domination, repression and suppression of the Puerto Rican peoples, they are exposed as hypocritical.

First, how do you talk about self-determination by a territory, such as Taiwan that is part of a country unless there are negotiations or constitutional provisions? Secondly, it is important to understand that until 1949, Taiwan was ruled from mainland China by the grand-parents of the same people who run Taiwan today. There was a civil war in China in which government forces were defeated, and the remnants fled the mainland to occupy Taiwan. So the peoples of China and Taiwan, are the same. In contrast, the people of Puerto Rico and America are not the same people, have no similar cultures, history or language as the former speak Spanish and the latter, English. While Americans are free to vote in the presidential elections, Puerto Ricans are denied the vote.

Puerto Rico was never part of the US. It was a colony of Spain and when America won the 1894 Spanish-American War, it replaced Spain as the colonial master and until today, has refused to grant that country of 3,285,874 peoples, independence. The US rejected the 1914 the Puerto Rican House of Delegates’ vote for independence and jailed Puerto Ricans who agitated for independence.

The most famous Puerto Rican jailed in the US for demanding independence is Oscar López Rivera who was set free in May, 2017 after spending 38 years in jail! Also, the US has for three decades now, rejected the United Nations Decolonisation Committee’s recognition of Puerto Rico’s right to self-determination and independence.

It is hypocritical for Pelosi and her handlers to fly all the way to China to say it is defending Taiwan’s right to self-determination while at home, the US denies the peoples of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands and the US Virgin Islands even the basic right to vote. President Tsai Ing-wen vowed before Pelosi that Taiwan “… will do whatever it takes to strengthen its self-defence capabilities”. She will find out like Ukraine, that the US would not risk a single American soul to defend Taiwan.
