Donald Trump Jr testifies in $250million New York civil fraud trial

Donald Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. testified on Wednesday that he had nothing to do with preparing financial documents at the family real-estate company as he took the stand at the $250million New York civil fraud trial.

According to the lawsuit, Don Jr. and Eric were involved with drawing up fraudulent financial statements, allegations which they both deny.

The lawsuit states that Don Jr. was the person who certified the financial statements after his father became President in 2017, at which point he and Eric took over the running of the Trump Organization.

‘I should have worn makeup!’ the 45-year-old joked as photographers took pictures of him while he sat at the bench with his lawyers.

Prosecutor Colleen Faherty then asked if Don Jr. knew about GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), and about his time at Wharton Business School.

Don Jr. said that ‘I understand what it (GAAP) stands for’ and that he studied it for ‘accounting 101, back in the late 90s’.

Asked if he knew anything else about GAAP, Don Jr. said: ‘That’s what I have CPAs (Certified Public Accountants) for.

‘I know nothing about GAAP and I’ll leave it to my accountants. That’s why I leave it to my accountants.

‘I relied on professionals and CPAs we pay millions of dollars (to). I rely on their opinions to make that assessment.

Don Jr. talked the court through how he joined his father’s company shortly after the 9/11 attacks.

Donald Trump did not show up in court on Wednesday, but took aim at Judge Arthur Engoron in a post online which read: ‘Leave my children alone, Engoron. You are a disgrace to the legal profession!’

US suspends $200m assistance to Niger Republic over coup

Following the July, 26, coup d’état that occurred in Niger when the country’s presidential guard detained President Mohamed Bazoum, the United States has suspended nearly $200 million assistance to the government of Niger Republic.

Recall that Presidential Guard commander General Abdourahamane Tchiani proclaimed himself the leader of a new military junta, shortly after confirming the coup a success.

On August 5, 2023, the U.S. temporarily paused certain foreign assistance programs to the government of Niger.

The move came as the Economic Community of West African States, a regional bloc representing 15 countries, was weighing possible military intervention to return Bazoum’s government to power.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Spokesperson U.S. Department of State, Matthew Miller, said the suspension was in line with section 7008 of the Department of State’s annual appropriations act.

“The United States has concluded that a military coup d’etat has taken place in Niger. Pursuant to section 7008 of the Department of State’s annual appropriations act, the United States is suspending most U.S. assistance to the government of Niger.

“On August 5, the United States temporarily paused certain foreign assistance programmes to the government of Niger, totalling nearly $200 million. That assistance is now also suspended pursuant to section 7008 of the Department of State’s annual appropriations act.”

The U.S. also noted the Millennium Challenge Corporation’s suspension of all assistance to Niger, including all preparatory work on its $302 million Niger Regional Transportation Compact and all new activity on its 2018 Compact.

Miller however assured that the people of Niger would continue to benefit from its life-saving humanitarian assistance.

He stated “We underscore that we will maintain our life-saving humanitarian, food, and health assistance to benefit the people of Niger. The United States also intends to continue to work with regional governments, including in Niger, to advance shared interests in West Africa.

“We stand with the Nigerien people in their aspirations for democracy, prosperity, and stability. Since the coup, we have supported the Economic Community of West African States’ efforts to work with Niger to achieve a return to democratic rule.”

The country added “Any resumption of U.S. assistance will require action by the National Council for Safeguarding the Homeland to usher in democratic governance in a quick and credible timeframe.

“The United States reiterates its call for the release of Mohamed Bazoum, his family, and all those detained.”

Kenya: Ruto woos US tech companies despite boosting business Taxes

Kenya’s president is wooing American tech companies, promising a business-friendly environment, even though he has raised taxes on businesses at home.

President William Ruto made the appeal in an address to leading U.S. technology companies and investors on Friday in San Francisco, highlighting investment opportunities in his country and lauding his government’s “strategic priorities.”

But critics say that his government’s newly imposed and also several proposed taxes will increase the cost of doing business in Kenya, including in the tech sector.

His administration in its first budget this year doubled the digital service tax to 3%, targeting foreign tech giants that use the internet to market and sell products.

The government had projected it would rake in billions in the local currency, the Kenyan shilling, from the doubled digital services tax, but critics warned it would discourage tech investors.

Ruto insisted his country was positioning itself as “Africa’s business process outsourcing and creative economy hub,” citing internet penetration and a growing workforce.

Kenya has in the past been accused of not tightening labor laws to prevent the exploitation of employees by tech companies such as Meta who were sued by former employees over poor working conditions and accused of paying low wages to content moderators.

  • 2 Nigerian men extradited to US to face sexual extortion charges after death of Michigan teen

2 Nigerian men extradited to US to face sexual extortion charges after death of Michigan teen

Two Nigerian men were extradited to the U.S. Sunday after they were indicted for allegedly sexually extorting teenage boys and young men across the United States and Nigeria.

U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Mark Totten and Acting Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the FBI in Michigan Devin Kowalski provided an update on the international “sextortion” ring involving 17-year-old Jordan DeMay from Marquette, Michigan and defendants from Nigeria.

Samuel Ogoshi, 22, and Samson Ogoshi, 20, of Lagos, Nigeria, were extradited to the United States from Nigeria to face prosecution after being indicted in May 2023, for sexually extorting numerous young men and teenage boys in the Western District of Michigan and across the United States.

Samuel Ogoshi was also charged with causing the death of 17-year-old Jordan DeMay of Marquette, Michigan, who was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in March 2022.

Nigerian authorities arrested the two men in Nigeria in January 2023, at the request of the United States. Nigerian prosecutors managed the extradition proceedings, on behalf of the United States.

“Sextortion is a horrible crime,” said Totten. “To those who commit these crimes: we will pursue you around the world. And to those who are victims: please know we stand ready to help you.”

Totten continued, “I am extremely pleased with how swiftly extradition efforts moved forward and am grateful to the FBI and our Nigerian law enforcement partners for their unyielding work to secure justice in this international sexual exploitation investigation.”

According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, it’s anticipated that the extradited defendants’ initial appearance will take place Monday afternoon at the federal courthouse in Grand Rapids at a time to be determined by the court.

The two men were charged in a four-count indictment that included charges of conspiracy to sexually exploit minors, conspiracy to distribute child pornography, and conspiracy to commit stalking through the internet for engaging in the sextortion scheme.

The grand jury alleges that the defendants bought hacked social media accounts and used the accounts to pose as young women to lure teenage and young adult males into sexual chats.

One of the accounts used was an Instagram account bearing the username “dani.robertts,” which communicated with Jordan DeMay shortly before his death.

After initiating chat conversations with the victims, the defendants simultaneously used Google and other online applications to research information about the victims, including where the victims lived, where they went to school or worked, and who their family and friends were.

The grand jury alleges the defendants then solicited their victims to produce and send sexually explicit images of themselves. Once the defendants received sexually explicit images, they created collages that included the sexually explicit image alongside other images of the victims from social media, including images of the victims’ school, family and friends.

The defendants then threatened to disclose the collages to others including the family, friends and classmates of their victims via social media unless the victims paid money. The grand jury alleges the defendants engaged in this extortion and attempted extortion of more than 100 people.

The extradition of the third defendant, Ezekial Ejehem Robert, is still pending.

The charges in an indictment are merely accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
