UTME: We arrested 100 examination cheats nationwide, shut down two CBT centres – JAMB

No fewer than 100 examination cheats have so far been arrested by security operatives across the country during the just concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said.

In its Weekly Bulletin released in Abuja on Monday by its spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, JAMB said the fraudsters were engaged in multiple registrations to facilitate impersonation during the examination.

The board noted that the act was inflating annual registration of the UTME exercise by up to 30 per cent.

JAMB also said that data available to it showed that the unwholesome practice was prevalent in virtually all the states of the federation, including Abuja.

Among the persons arrested was a notorious cheat who had registered about 64 times in a bid to “ghost-write” for 64 candidates.

The examination body said the arrest of the culprits was made possible by the comprehensive and mandatory identity checks conducted on those taking the examination with a view to fishing out professional ghostwriters before the release of the results.

JAMB also said that it had cancelled the results of two Computer Based (CBT) centres in Abia over what it described as “widespread irregularities” during the UTME.

The board gave the names of the CBT centres as Heritage and Infinity CBT centre and Okwyzil Computer Institute Comprehensive School Ugwunabo, Aba, Abia.

It said the drastic action was necessitated by the visual evidence obtained from a careful review of the CCTV recordings by a panel of experts engaged by the board.

“However, in order not to unduly punish honest and hardworking candidates who found themselves attached to these two centres, the board magnanimously relocated all the candidates who had taken or were scheduled to take their examination in the two centres to other centres where they had subsequently taken their examinations,” it said.

JAMB, however, apologised to innocent candidates involved in the relocation for the inconveniences they may have suffered, reaffirming its commitment to providing equal opportunity to all candidates to articulate their hopes and aspirations.

The body said that all the results of the examination sessions conducted by the board in the two centres from April 11 to 18 were null and void. (NAN)

  • 23 inmates sit for 2019 UTME at Ikoyi Prisons

No fewer than 23 inmates of the Ikoyi Prisons School on Wednesday participated in the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who monitored the examination reports that the inmates showed enthusiasm on siting the examiners who had also turned up early enough to administer the examination for the candidates behind the bars.

The Principal of the facility’s school, ASP Ibikunle Idris, told NAN that a total of 25 of the inmates actually registered for the examination but that 23 sat for the examination.

According to him, out of the 25 that registered, nine of them were however discharged before the date for the examination.

Idris however stated that out of the nine that were discharged before the examination, seven of them came back to the facility to join others in taking the examination.

“Two of the nine that were discharged did not show up for the examination.

“But I must say the examination is a huge success. By our judgement, it was 100 per cent hitch free.

“The systems and the backups were all working at their best and on our part, we ensured the candidates were well relaxed while they wrote the examination.

“With the level of preparations we had for them prior to this examination, we will not expect anything short of 270 and above score.

“We would want to commend some NGOs such as the Good News Baptist Church and other volunteers who joined hands with us in preparing the inmates, including our own staff and inmates. It was a joint effort,” he said.

The Principal added that the Controller General of Prisons, Ja’afaru Ahmed, the former Controller of Prisons, Lagos Command, now Assistant Controller General of Prisons, Tunde Ladipo, had both showed great commitment in the overall welfare of the inmates.

“One of their cardinal focus has been to give support in the general welfare, empowerment and reformation of the inmates.

“The current Deputy Controller of the Ikoyi Prisons too, Tolu Ogunsakin on his own, has ensured that the inmates are given the best support in a bid to ensure that they carry on with their lives successfully whenever they regained freedom,” Idris told NAN

  • 2019 UTME: 390 visually impaired participate in 4 centres across Nigeria

No fewer than 390 visually impaired candidates are participating in the ongoing 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

The UTME for the visually impaired, which is taking place in four centres, started on Tuesday and will be concluded on Wednesday, April 17.

The Chairman, Equal Opportunity Group of JAMB, Prof. Peter Okebukola, made the disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday at one of the venues of the examination at the University of Lagos.

He told NAN that the candidates were sitting for the examination in Abuja, Enugu, Kano and Lagos centres.

NAN reports that the Equal Opportunity Group is made up of senior academics, including experts in special education and other relevant stakeholders.

Giving a breakdown of figures of the visually challenged candidates that were sitting for the examination in the four centres across the country, Okebukola said 57 wrote the examination at the Abuja centre.

He said that 59 others would write at Enugu, 135 at Kano and 139 others in Lagos.

He noted that the subjects the candidates were examined on during the two-day examination included Agricultural Education, Arabic, Biology, Chemistry, Christian Religious Knowledge, Civic Education and Commerce.

He said others include Economics, Geography, Government, Hausa, History, Igbo Language, Islamic Studies, Literature in English and Mathematics.

Okebukola added that Music, Physics, Use of English and Yoruba completed the number of subjects.

“The goal of the Prof. Is-shaq Oloyede-led JAMB is to ensure that no Nigerian who is eligible is prevented from taking the UTME regardless of any disability.

“The JAMB boss holds the firm view that we must have a level playing field for all candidates.

“As long as the candidate is intellectually capable and meets the minimum conditions for admission in the university of choice, he or she should have a good chance of placement into any university,” he told NAN.

The former National Universities Commission (NUC)’s Executive Secretary, added that this initiative by the board has been cited in the last two years in several countries as a good model for Africa.

“So far, a respectable number of blind candidates processed through the JAMB Equal Opportunity Group have secured admission into Federal, State and Private Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education,’’ he said.

He told NAN that the candidates were still taking the examination through the dictation mode because the board was preparing and getting them familiarised with the mode of administering lectures in tertiary institutions.

“We know where these persons are going to and so, we also want to assist them by ensuring that they get exposed to what awaits them ahead.

“That being said, we have also been working towards migrating to their own kind of Computer Based Test (CBT) in a year or two.

“We are currently test running the software on this platform but I can assure you that in another year or two, we will fully migrate,” Okebukola told NAN.

Mrs Chioma Ohakwe, Proprietress, Bethesda Home for the Blind, Mushin in Lagos, said that the home presented of 25 candidates for this year’s examination.

She said she was optimistic that her candidates would post impressive performance as the home had placed the candidates under intensive teaching, monitoring and supervision.

“Infact, we had to hire eight new experts to handle and prepare these candidates.

“We have been preparing them for this examination in the past one year.

“We hired six professional teachers to coach them for this examination, one for just braille and another for computer, bringing the total of the new teachers to eight.

“So, it is my expectation that they will post a better performance compared to their colleagues who sat for the examination in 2018,” Ohakwe told NAN.

She pleaded with the board to fast track efforts in putting in place the CBT mode for the candidates, adding that they had complained of their inability to understand and get the words dictated clearly.

Also, she said the candidates had lamented that it did not give them enough time to think before answering the questions.

NAN reports that the 390 blind candidates are among the over 1.8 million candidates taking this year’s UTME which commenced on Thursday, April 11.

  • JAMB confirms arrest of 50 professional examination writers for impersonation

JAMB confirms arrest of 50 professional examination writers for impersonation

Fifty professional examination writers who sit for candidates in the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have been arrested, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has revealed.

The board said the impostors were arrested nationwide following its intelligence gathering mechanism.

JAMB’s Spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in the agency’s weekly bulletin.

Benjamin identified some of the professional examination writers as Master’s degree holders, postgraduate and undergraduate students of various tertiary institutions in the country.

He said the professional writers connived with owners and operators of its Computer Based Test Centres (CBT) to carry out the crime by engaging in multiple registrations where the fingerprints of the main candidates are captured side by side with that of the impostors.

The board has uncovered a group of professional examination writers who take the exams for prospective candidates for a fee.

As a result of intelligence gathering, over 50 of such writers have been arrested across the country.

The modus operandi of these UTME syndicates was confirmed when one of the kingpins was apprehended recently,” the bulletin said.

He said the culprit confessed to have done multiple registrations of his biometric along with several other candidates with the intention of sitting for them and collecting huge sums of money from the candidates.

This Development is the fundamental reason for the decision of the board to revalidate all biometrics of candidates that have taken the board’s examination in recent times.

This timely action would enable the board to not only fish out and dismantle these registration cartels and racketeers but also bring them to book along with their collaborators,” the bulletin said.

Also, Fabian said 1, 236, 316 candidates out of the 1.8 million registered has so far taken the examination.

A total of 1,886,238 UTME candidates are expected to sit nationwide. And, 1,236,316 candidates have so far taken their examination,” it added.

  • 2019 UTME: JAMB to investigate inability of candidates to do biometric verification

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said it will investigate reported cases of inability of some candidates to do biometric verification as the 2019/20 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), commenced on Thursday.

The board’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dr Fabian Benjamin disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview on Friday in Abuja.

Benjamin also said that the release of the results would not be immediate as the board was taking time to process before releasing them in order to avoid multiple cancellations.

On the biometric verification, Benjamin said that the board was looking into all reported cases and would take a decision soon.

“We will look at the cases brought before us to know if they are actual challenges or part of malpractice.

“This is because we discovered that some candidates have done something they intend to take advantage of the biometric verification challenge as an excuse, so we need to be ascertain the genuiness of these cases.

” I assure you we are looking at it and would do something,”

NAN reports that the 2019/20 UTME which commenced on Thursday, April 11, nationwide was not totally hitchfree as some candidates complained of inability to be verified through the biometric process, either at the beginning or end of the exercise.

However, NAN also reports that some centres recorded a smooth conduct of the process as over 1.8 million candidates who registered for the exercise were expected to sit for the examination from April 11 to April 15 in the 698 Computer Based Test (CBT) centres across the country.

  • JAMB clears air on ‘clash’ between UTME, WAEC timetables

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says there is no clash between its timetable and that of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) as being widely speculated and criticised.

The JAMB Registrar, Is’haq Oloyede, said at an interactive session with Editors in Lagos on Tuesday, that there was no basis for such speculation because the organisation was holding annual meetings with the examination bodies to reconcile areas of interest.

“We meet annually with WAEC, NECO and others to reconcile because we have the same target of education development,’’ he said.

He said those attacking him and the system out of ignorance would not succeed in distracting him from pursuing the target of ensuring national development through sound education for Nigerians.

He explained that government slashed the registration fees for candidates from N5,000 based on advice from the Board, an action he said would encourage registration of more candidates for higher education and eventual national development.

Mr Oloyede enumerated various measures inimical to education development, including multiple registration, abuse of biometric system and other forms of corruption in the system.

The registrar said JAMB, under his leadership, was determined to clean the system with legitimate approach.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the results of its 2019 Mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted on April 1.

JAMB’s Head, Media and Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.

According to him, a total of 157,631 candidates sat for the examination in 698 centres across the country.

“We have just released the results of the mock examination taken on Mon., April 1, nationwide.

“Candidates should only use the outcome of the results to prepare harder for the main UTME, scheduled to commence on April 11.

“They should also note that the results are not for the purpose of admission or matriculation consideration.

“Candidates are now free to visit our website for their results, using their registration numbers,” Benjamin said.

According to him, the printing of candidates’ examination slips ahead of the main UTME, which was earlier scheduled for Tue., April 2, has now been moved to Thur., April 4.

  • Only 157,631 candidates indicated interest in mock UTME – JAMB

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board said candidates who are yet to receive notification for its mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination may not have indicated interest at the point of registration.

The Head, Media and Information of the board, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made the clarification in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Lagos.

NAN reports that, of about 1.9 million candidates who registered for the 2019 UTME, which is computer-based, a total of 157,631 indicated interest for the mock as of the close of UTME registration on February 21.

“We have concluded plans for the conduct of this Mock UTME scheduled to hold on April 1.

“Some candidates have been saying they are yet to receive and print their notification slips for this mock examination. I think that has nothing to do with the board because all those who indicated interest to participate have all been notified.

“Again, some of them might have registered late. However, the examination is optional, and I do not think there is any cause to worry,’’ he said.

NAN reports that printing of notification slip of the main UTME will begin on April 2, while the examination will start from April 11.

  • JAMB reopens registration portal, announces new date for conduct of 2019 UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has rescheduled the conduct of 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation examination (UTME) to 11th April.

The board also fixed 1st April for the conduct of its mock examination earlier scheduled for Saturday, 23rd March.

JAMB’s Head of Media, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, in Abuja.

The statement directed candidates to begin the printing of their UTME notification slips from 2nd April.

It stated that candidates can print the slips in any part of the country.

According to the statement, all candidates who registered for UTME are to ensure that they print their examination notification slips before the day of the examination, noting that no excuses would be entertained by the board.

The statement said: “The Board has scheduled to conduct the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation examination (UTME) from Thursday, 11th April, 2019.

‘’Candidates are to begin the printing of the 2019 UTME notification slips from Tuesday, 2nd April, 2019. Candidates can print their slips anywhere.

All candidates who registered for the 2019 UTME are to ensure that they print their examination notification slips before the day of the examination as no excuses would be entertained.

‘’The public should note that the Board would not reschedule examination for any candidate.”

The board, in the statement, explained the rescheduling of the mock examination to April was due to certain circumstances beyond its control.

It urged candidates who had indicated interest in taking part in the mock examination during registration and have printed their mock examination notification slips not to reprint another one.

All the details on the slips remain the same except the examination date which is now 1st April, 2019,” the statement said.

The board has also reopened its registration portal to 41,063 candidates who have created their profiles and procured either the UTME or DE ePINS till Friday 15th, March.

The statement added that the portal will be closed by 12midnight of same day.

Nigerians would recall that the Board had closed the sale of its Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and Direct Entry application document on Thursday, 21st February, 2019.

‘’At the close of the sale and subsequently close of registration portal, it was discovered that 41,063 candidates created profile and procured either UTME or DE ePINS but were unable to complete their registration formalities after initiating the process.

In view of this consideration the Board has opened the registration portal effective from Wednesday 13th March, 2019 for all candidates with either UTME or DE ePINS to complete their registration formalities.

The portal would be closed on Friday, 15th March, 2019 by 12midnight.

This opportunity is for only candidates who had created profile and procured UTME or DE ePINS before the close of registration portal as the sale of ePINS had since been closed.

Please endeavor to register before Friday midnight if you are holding any of the ePINS (UTME/DE),” the statement added.
