EPL: VAR to still be in use as 19 clubs vote in support

At least 19 Premier League teams on Thursday, voted in favour of continuing with the Video Assistant Referee, VAR, next season.

19 English Premier League clubsides out of 20 that will feature in next season’s EPL have voted that Video Assistamt Referee VAR should still be in use.

It means that only one club voted against it.

Recall that the vote was held after Wolves raised a proposal to stop using the technology citing its numerous disadvantages.

Any change would have required 14 votes in favour from the 20 clubs.

However, during a meeting on Thursday, the 20 clubs in the top flight, agreed to focus on six key areas to improve its implementation.

These include raising the bar required for technology to intervene and reducing delays in the game.

A Premier League statement read in part: “Premier League clubs today voted in favour of continuing to operate VAR in the Premier League.

“While VAR produces more accurate decision-making, it was agreed that improvements should be made for the benefit of the game and supporters.”

EPL: VAR to witness two changes ahead of next season

Video Assistants Referee, (VAR) could witness two changes as Premier League clubs are set to vote in that regard.

At the moment it’s looking like only Wolves are in support for the total scrapping of VAR.

However, the pressure could be used to oversee changes in its operation.

Firstly, in-stadium communication of VAR decisions will be introduced.

Secondly, a number of clubs believe the choices of referees could be broadened to allow Europe’s elite officials to referee matches.

June 6 has been picked as the date that Clubs will vote on the future of VAR at the Premier League’s AGM  in Harrogate.

14 out 20 clubsides are expected to be in support of a particular decision before it can be passed.

If any decision is reached then it’s expected to take immediate effect from next season.

EPL: Pochettino slams VAR after Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa

Mauricio Pochettino the Chelsea manager  has slammed Video Assistant Referee shortly after Chelsea drew 2-2 with Aston Villa on Saturday night.

The Blues conceded two goals in the first half but came back fighting hard to restore parity in the second half of the encounter.

Chelsea defender, Alex Disasi thought he had headed in the winner, but VAR intervened and the goal was ruled out.

The result leaves Chelsea in 9th place with 48 points.

Speaking after the game, Pochettino said: “Two different things: the referee said it was a foul and disallowed the goal and then went to the VAR to confirm.

“The referee is unbelievable and it’s ridiculous. It is difficult to accept these types of things; in the semi-final [FA Cup against Man City] two weeks ago it was handball and it was no penalty; the referee, he didn’t check it.

“It is painful as it has damaged English football and I think Villa players and their fans didn’t understand why the goal was disallowed.

“They said it was foul and if you see the challenge, what happens if we go into every single challenge like this, it is going to be a foul and we wouldn’t finish the game with 11 [players].

“We can talk about the performance or the decision – it is damaging the game.”

  • League match to be replayed in full after VAR error

League match to be replayed in full after VAR error

A match in the top tier of Belgian football between Anderlecht and Genk will be replayed in full after a VAR error led to a misapplication of the laws of the game.

This follows a ruling of a football disciplinary body.

The incident happened in the 23rd minute of the match when Genk forward Yira Sor scored from the rebound of Bryan Heynan’s missed penalty.

Replays have now shown that Sor was inside the area as Heynan took the spot-kick.

This led to VAR recommending to referee Nathan Verboomen that the goal should be cancelled.

However, the replay also showed that two Anderlecht players had also encroached into the penalty area.

According to the laws of the game, this should have resulted in Genk’s penalty being retaken.

Anderlecht went on to win the match 2-1 thanks to a 91st-minute winner from Anders Dreyer on December 23, 2023.

EPL: Why VAR didn’t cancel West Ham’s controversial goal against Arsenal – Mark Clattenberg,

Reasons have been provided why West Ham’s first goal against Arsenal at the Emirate was not chalked off after it was checked by Video Assistant Referee (VAR)

VAR gave  Tomas Soucek’s goal for West Ham against Arsenal on Thursday night despite the ball appearing to go out of play in the build-up.

Soucek scored a tap in inside 13 minute of the encounter after receiving a pass from Jarrod Bowen

However, the goal was shrouded in controversy, as it was awarded following a long VAR check.

VAR checked two angles before deciding that the goal should stand.

Ex-Premier League referee, Mark Clattenberg, speaking on Amazon Prime, said: “The on-field decision is a goal, so they have to find conclusive evidence that the ball has gone out of play.

“From the angles I have seen, the ball looks to be slightly in play.

“There’s no other decision the match officials can give. The assistant referee, who is on the goal line, cannot see clearly if the ball has gone out of play.

“The on-field decision is a goal. When you look at all the evidence, we cannot be 100 per cent certain that the ball has gone out.”

Isco complains about VAR after Real Madrid draw

Real Betis midfielder Isco says VAR is hurting football after their 1-1 draw with Real Madrid.

The game was marred by several VAR interventions.

Isco later said: “There’s too much talk about referees. We all complain a lot. I don’t like the dynamic football is taking, with programmes dedicated to talking about referees.

“Football is very beautiful and we cannot waste time speaking about if the referee whistles right, or wrong.

“Now with cameras and VAR, they portray the referees more. We have to dedicate ourselves to playing football.

EPL: Mikel Arteta makes U-turn, says VAR made right decision

Few days after lambasting Video Assistant Referee following a controversial goal awarded to Arsenal’s opponent Newcastle United, Mikel Arteta has now praised VAR, saying it made the right decision by sending Fabio Vieira off against Burnley in a Premier League clash on Saturday.

Arsenal went joint top of the Premier League table following a 3-1 win over the Clarets on Saturday.

Leandro Trossard, William Saliba, and Oleksandr Zinchenko had all scored for the hosts before Vieira was dismissed for a high tackle.

After the game at the Emirates, Arteta said: “With the red card, yes, thank you for asking me; VAR was right. The referee was right; really good decision. Really positive from Mikel to speak about that. Good decision.”

Recall that Premier League Discipline panel said center referee Stuart made the right decision by allowing Gordon’s goal against Arsenal last week Saturday at St James’ Park.

EPL: Arsenal manager, Arteta furiously slams VAR over controversial loss to Newcastle

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has lambasted VAR officials following their controversial 1-0 defeat to Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday.

Arsenal’s unbeaten run ended on Saturday at St James’ park after Anthony Gordon scored a controversial winner in the second half of the thrilling encounter.

The goal was subjected to a four-minute VAR check, in which the officials deemed the ball had not crossed the line, Joelinton didn’t foul Gabriel Magalhaes and Gordon wasn’t offside.

Arteta was left fuming at the decision after the game.

“I have praised my players for the way they played and competed in this stadium against this team. The result should not be what it is; there are many reasons for that. If there was a team looking to win the game today, it was Arsenal.

“Embarrassing what happened—how this goal stands in the Premier League—this league we say is the best in the world. I’ve been 20 years in this country and now I feel ashamed. It’s a disgrace and there’s too much at stake here.

“The outcome is nowhere near the level this league needs to have and the way this league is getting competed in. It’s not good enough. I feel embarrassed to be part of this,” Arteta told BBC MOTD.

  • EPL: PGMOL introduces new VAR guidelines following Tottenham, Liverpool match controversies

EPL: PGMOL introduces new VAR guidelines following Tottenham, Liverpool match controversies

Following the controversies surrounding the game between Tottenham and Liverpool at the Tottenham Stadium last week Saturday in which a good goal scored by Liverpool’s Luiz Daiz was incorrectly ruled out for offside, the Premier League has introduced new video assistant referee (VAR) guidelines.

The guidelines have been introduced immediately following Luis Diaz’s disallowed goal as Liverpool lost 2-1 at Tottenham.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) later admitted that a “significant human error” had taken place.

Darren England, who was on VAR duties for the game, mistakenly thought that the goal had been awarded by the on-field team so quickly said “check complete” to confirm that Diaz was onside.

But the on-field team took that to mean that their original call of offside had been correct and play restarted, prompting a massive furore afterwards.

Now, according to the new rules, PGMOL has now noted that the fresh guidance will “enhance the clarity of communication between the referee and the VAR team in relation to on-field decisions”.

VARs will now confirm the outcome of the checking process with the assistant VAR before confirming the final decision to the on-field officials, to prevent a repeat of what happened with Diaz.
