  • Auto dealers raise alarm over 70% drop in vehicle sales

The United Berger Auto Dealers Association has raised alarm over what it called a significant drop in the volume of vehicles from about 80 per cent to as low as 10 per cent.

The auto dealers also lamented that this has caused its sprawling parks to be congested with thousands of unsold vehicles.

The dealers who were seen last week idling away when TheNewsGuru.com team visited some of the sales points, also complained that imported vehicles in the Berger auto parks are yet to be sold, thereby making it difficult for newly imported ones to be accommodated.

Though the market has about 18 different parks, a visit by TheNewsGuru.com team to the park last week revealed that lack of parking space has caused some dealers to pay money for extra space to be reserved for them.

Some vehicles that could not find spaces in the various parks are also seen daily parked on the various roads adjoining the expansive automobile market located on the ever-busy Apapa Oshodi expressway in Lagos.

Confirming this to TheNewsGuru.com, President of the Association, Mr Metche Nnadiekwe said that dealers have been recording poor sales for a while. He noted that dealers of trucks and lorries are the most affected by the drop in sales.

TheNewsGuru.com confirmed that a combination of the bad roads leading to the market and high foreign exchange rate between the Naira and Dollar and Euro have made importation of used vehicles a herculean task.

“Even at that, those of us who can wade through it still travel to import, but the one we had have not been sold, so we have a problem of space’’, a top dealer told our correspondent last week.

When TheNewsGuru.com team approached some auto dealers at the market for their reaction, they blamed low cash flow and forex as the major cause of low sales in the market.

They made reference to the last Sallah celebration, saying that in previous years there would have been a high a lot of people would have thronged to the market to buy vehicles.

One of the dealers, who simply identified himself as Poto Odogwu, said that during previous Sallah celebrations, dealers used to record high sales especially in the sales of Toyota products, he lamented that 2017 was different.

He also complained of inadequate parking spaces for vehicles in the park.

“Before now, during Sallah Festival, we know the kind of sales we make. But now people go for cheaper cars because there is no money. One of the major challenges here has to do with parking space for cars; the whole place is filled-up. Since we were asked not to be parking cars directly under the bridge, one can hardly see where to park our car for sale. I have a car still in the warehouse; I don’t know where to park it, that has been my reasons not to bring it out”

“Vehicles are coming in here, that is why the spaces we have are very limited. The thing is very frustrating, if there is no place for you to display your vehicle, how will someone see it and buy”.

He maintained that even though the Naira has gained slightly against the Dollar, sales are still low.

“People might be thinking that now that Naira has appreciated, that it will bring a boom to the sales, but it is not like that. The people, who imported the vehicles when the Dollar was very high, still want to sell it at that rate of importation not minding that the rate of Dollar has dropped. So, when a buyer comes and you tell the price, they will start telling you that there is reduction in Dollar rate. That is the issue we are having here” he said

Also speaking, a truck dealer who simply gave his name as Mazi, said that auto dealers are suffering as some of them have not made any sales since the beginning of the year.

“Some of us are suffering here; we have not made any sales since this year. There is no money, Dollar is high. Some of us have been able to sell just one vehicle. There is no parking space especially for trucks because the old ones are not sold, so there is no space for the new ones to come in” he lamented.

However, as a temporal solution, the president of the association, Metche Nnadiekwe charged the dealers to consider the possibility of selling their vehicles in other parts of Lagos State. He said it is not compulsory that everybody must display their vehicles at Berger.

“It is not compulsory that everybody must sample (display) their vehicles at Berger. They can try other auto markets in other parts of Lagos state to sample their vehicles. Sales have drastically dropped here in Berger, people are really suffering. If I should rate the sales by percentage, I will say that it has dropped from 80% we used to have in the previous years to 10% this year”

“I will blame the FOREX for this, and secondly, the cash is not flowing the way it should. There is no money anywhere” he said.

  • FG to extend ban on vehicle through land borders by 90days

FG to extend ban on vehicle through land borders by 90days

Indications emerge that the Federal Government might be considering pleas by various interest groups for an extension in the implementation date of its ban on vehicle through land borders by a grace period of ninety days.

In response to a petition written by the National Council of Managing Director of Licensed Customs Agents, (NCMDLCA) asking the government to extend the period before implementing the policy, Mr. Ibrahim Abdul, an Assistant Director in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation said that the government was considering the extension.

The letter with reference number ECD/P/251/T/111/232 and dated 25th January, 2017, Abdul said the issue of extension has been forwarded to both the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Nigeria Customs Service.

The letter reads in part: “I am directed to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated 12th of January, 2017 in respect of the above subject and inform you that the issues raised therein have been forwarded to the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Nigeria Customs Service for consideration and necessary action”.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the National Council of Managing Director of Licensed Customs Agents, had written to the Presidency saying that the ban of vehicles through land borders was against international trade laws.

In a petition, the council said that the laws of the World Trade Organisation, WTO, stipulates that trade regulations and amendments with regards to restriction and reversal of Fiscal Policy on Trade, must be subject to process of consultation by trading public and transparency in the timing, so as to accommodate the challenges that maybe associated with the directive/regulation.

The convention according to the Council also stipulates that each contracting party shall provide opportunities and an appropriate time period to traders and other interested parties to comment on the proposed introduction or amendment of laws and regulations of general application related to the movement, release, and restriction of transit goods.

He also said that the restriction of vehicles through the land borders came at a very short notice, which contravenes the convention and global best practice on reasonable information across the international community, carrier, and shippers, traders etc., that are directly affected by the decision.

TheNewsGuru.com recalls that the Federal Government had through the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS on December 5, 2016 ordered the ban on importation of vehicles into the country through land borders.

The ban according to the government takes effect from January 1, 2017.

  • Nigeria’s economy won’t improve in 2017 – Peter Obi

    Nigeria’s economy won’t improve in 2017 – Peter Obi

The immediate past governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi has said the nation’s economy may not improve in 2017 because of the attitude of the incumbent administration to the crisis.

Obi disclosed this in an interview with CNBC Africa on Monday. He said Nigeria is like a faulty vehicle which does not necessarily needs another driver but a quick fixing of the engine to get it working again.

In his words: “For me, I don’t think the economy will be better in 2017 because I have not seen the attention that is required for the situation we find ourselves.

“Where we are now is like having a car with which has an engine knock, and we are still busy talking about changing the driver. There is no engine in place; even if you bring in the best driver in the world, he is not going to move the car.

“We need to talk about how do we fix the engine of this vehicle, and that engine is the economy. Until we fix it, then we can talk about the driver, whether there is a good driver or bad driver.”

The former governor called on the political class to bury their different ideologies and come together with the aim of charting the way forward for the Nigerian economy.

“Considering where we are, we need to have in all these sectors, crisis manager to deal with the situation, We need to pull everybody together, it’s no longer a party matter, it is no longer a political matter, it is a survival matter.

“It’s not time to trade blames; it’s not time to dwell in yesterday. If you look at our headlines in our newspapers, the quality of discourse is low, we are still chasing shadows,” Obi said.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Obi was governor of Anambra State in Nigeria from 17 March 2006 to 2 November 2006, when he was impeached and from 9 February 2007 to 29 May 2007 after his impeachment was overturned.

Although a fresh election was held on 29 April 2007, he was reappointed governor on 14 June 2007 after a court ruling that he should be allowed to complete a four-year term.

He won a 6 February 2010 election for a second term as governor.

  • Customs begins enforcement of FG’s ban on vehicle import through land borders

… as agents seek 3-month extension

Sequel to the Federal Government’s ban on importation of vehicles through the land border late 2016, the Seme Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) said it has put in place measures to ensure effective implementation of the policy effective from Wednesday.

Victor Dimka, controller of the Command, said in an interview with newsmen in his office that his command had deployed officers to man routes that could be used by smugglers to bring in the vehicles as the new policy took in effect in January 1, this year.

The controller, who noted that it had not been easy for the command owing to the fact that Seme had two exit points that include Owode and the main border, except from the creeks, said the command had also sensitised people to be aware of the new policy and its implications.

“We have moved all the officers on vehicle seats to other seats, particularly the routes that we consider could be used by smugglers. We have also blocked all the routes and new ones are being created,” Dimka said.

According to Dimka, the command has also dismantled all illegal checkpoints and blocked all illegal routes, as, “We have sent our moles to know exactly the minds of people that will want to smuggle vehicles. We have made a lot of discoveries but these are things that cannot be disclosed because if you want to catch a smuggler, you don’t give out strategies so that they don’t counter such strategies.”

The command will also work closely with the anti smuggling unit of the NCS, the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) and other security agencies including the military and the police to ensure full implementation of the law, he said.

Meanwhile, the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Seme chapter, has called on the Federal Government to grant a three-month grace period before enforcing the ban on importation of vehicles through the land borders.

Bisiriyu Danu, chairman of the association, who made the plea on Friday in Badagry, Lagos State, said the grace period would enable ships carrying vehicles to berth for clearance before implementation of the ban.
