Just In: PDP national secretary, Anyanwu, emerges Vice Chairman, Democrat Union of Africa

The National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has been appointed Vice Chairman of the Democrat Union of Africa.

The announcement was made in a statement by the Imo State PDP Publicity Secretary, Lancelot Obiaku, on Thursday, describing the development as a significant achievement for democracy and leadership.

His emergence as Vice Chairman (West Africa) and board member of the Democrat Union of Africa (DUA) is great news for the state and everyone who believes in true democracy and people-centred leadership,” the statement read.

The Democrat Union of Africa is an alliance of centre-right political parties in Africa. Founded in Dakar, Senegal, in 1997, it is affiliated with the global International Democratic Union. The DUA firmly believes that Africa can only achieve its full potential by embracing the ideals of democracy.

“As a party, we are proud of Anyanwu’s accomplishment. He has indeed brought honour to Imo State by securing this enviable position in a keenly contested election,” the statement continued.

The appointment, Obiaku noted, is a confirmation of Anyanwu’s leadership ability and political pedigree.

He added that the PDP national secretary has proven to be a true democrat and a seasoned political leader whose approach contrasts with the old order.

“We are confident that the former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions will continue to distinguish himself and use his new position to foster the growth of future leaders and deepen democracy in Imo State, Nigeria, West Africa, and Africa at large,” the statement stated.

Members sack Edo FA chairman, asked to hand over to Vice-Chairman

The Board of Edo State Football Association (FA) on Monday passed a vote of no confidence on its chairman, Roland Abu, for alleged inability to render financial reports, among other issues.

The board has also gone on, in a letter addressed to the General Secretary on Monday, to notify the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) of Abu’s sacking.

It accused the chairman of autocracy and unilaterally “running the Edo FA as if it’s a personal business”.

The board cited other irregularities, such as poor handling and poor conduct of football matters, as reasons for Abu’s ouster.

The letter was signed by the board’s Vice-Chairman, Aghedo Moses, and six other members.

The board advised Abu to “hand over all Edo State FA property belonging to his office and less indebtedness to the Vice-Chairman, with immediate effect.”

The letter titled “Vote of no confidence” read:

“We, Edo State Football Association Board respectfully write to refer and draw your attention to the above-mentioned subject and to inform you of some burning issues in Edo State Football Association.

“This relates to lack of no confidence in the current Edo FA Chairman Roland Abu due to the following reasons:

“Taking autocratic decisions without due process, running Edo FA as if it’s his personal enterprise.

“Since his inception as the Chairman Edo State Football Association three years ago, he has not been able to render financial reports to his Board members even when the Board insisted.

“Irregularities, poor handling and poor conduct of football competitions are series of uprising petitions, raised by clubs, contestants, and stakeholders as a result of his poor performances, high-handedness in handling football matters in the state.

“Arising from the above points raised against the current chairman, ….. and for peace to be maintained, the Edo State Football Association Board Members resolved and passed a vote of no confidence on him as Chairman, Edo State FA”.

All efforts to get Abu’s reaction to the development failed to yield any positive result.

  • Arnold replacing Woodward at Man Utd as vice-chairman

Arnold replacing Woodward at Man Utd as vice-chairman

Richard Arnold will replace Ed Woodward as Manchester United’s most senior executive on 1 February.

Woodward stated his intention to leave his role as executive vice-chairman last spring amid the fallout from the doomed European Super League project.

Arnold, 50, joined United in August 2007 and has been the club’s managing director since 2013.

He will become chief executive in a change of title from Woodward.

“I would like to thank Ed for his tireless work on behalf of Manchester United during his nine years as executive vice-chairman and 16 years with the club,” said United co-chairman Joel Glazer.

“We are now looking forward to Richard and his leadership team opening a new phase in the club’s evolution, with ambitious plans for investment in Old Trafford, the strengthening of our engagement with fans, and continued drive towards our most important objective – winning on the pitch.”

Woodward’s time in charge has not been a successful one.

He replaced David Gill in 2013 when the club won the last of its 20 league titles. Since then, United have suffered an alarming fall in status.

In that time they won the FA Cup in 2016, plus the Europa League and EFL Cup in 2017.

However, they have failed to mount a realistic challenge on either the Premier League title or the Champions League and in November, Woodward sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager, the fourth time he has been forced to dismiss his own appointment ahead of schedule.

Arnold has been in charge of day-to-day operations at Old Trafford and is widely credited with building bridges with United’s major fans groups. In his previous role as commercial director, he was viewed as one of the biggest influences behind the club’s huge commercial growth.

“I am honoured to have the chance to serve this great club and its fans,” he said. “I am determined to return that honour in any way I can.”

Woodward will remain on the football club board until the end of the season, which will involve attending a couple of meetings.

However, he will not stay on in a consultancy role as had previously been suggested.

  • Anambra mourns Mrs Charity Maduka, Vice Chairman of Coscharis Group

Anambra mourns Mrs Charity Maduka, Vice Chairman of Coscharis Group

The Government and people of Anambra State have received with shock the news of the sudden transition in the evening of Saturday, November 27, of Mrs Charity Maduka, wife of Dr Cosmas Maduka of Coscharis Group.

The state’s condolence was expressed in a statement signed and released by Don Adinuba, Commissioner of Information and Public Enlightenment on Monday.

Mrs Maduka was not just the wife of the chairman of one of Nigeria’s most successful businesses but the co-founder of the Coscharis conglomerate. Coscharis is a neologism derived from the names, Cosmas and Charity.

The couple married at an early age in their Nnewi hometown with practically no financial resources and with limited formal education, but with hard work, vision, commitment and integrity turned their humble buying and selling business into a billion dollar conglomerate within a short period, with interests in automobile distribution, vehicle assembly, sale of fast moving automobile accessories, farming and so on.

The government and people of Anambra State were delighted when a few years ago the Coscharis Group decided to set up a humungous modern farm in the state in response to the government’s Think Home campaign which seeks to create or raise the consciousness of investors from the state about the imperative of establishing businesses at home.

Coscharis has today one of the largest farms in the Southeast geopolitical zone, and it is located in Anaku, headquarters of Ayamelum Local Government Area. The farm has a sophisticated irrigation system, complete with a modern big dam, thus enabling it to engage in both rainy and dry season rice farming.

Both Mr Cosmas and Mrs Charity Maduka scored a bully’s eye on October 2, 2019, when Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State, Governor Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi State and Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele commissioned the $300m Coscharis Rice Mill at Igbariam, Anambra East LGA, the largest rice processing factory in the Southeast.

Governor Bagudu came all the way from Kebbi to find out how Coscharis Rice Mill could process rice from his state, the largest rice-producing state in Nigeria. Stines Rice Mill in Amichi, Nnewi South LGA, has been processing the famous Lake Rice brand in for both Kebbi and Lagos states in their joint venture.

Coscharis Rice is among the best rice brands in the Nigerian market.

There are at least four important lessons enterpreneurs need to learn from Mr and Mrs Maduka, apart from their integrity, hard work and perseverance. They are frugality, unity between them, trust and intense spirituality.

Despite making a fortune over the decades, the couple has avoided ostentation and showmanship which has enabled it to have a high savings rate, a major driver of fast business growth and rapid national development across the globe. The Chinese enterpreneurs and Warren Buffet of the United States are ready examples in this respect.

It is heartwarming that fortune did not cause Cosmas and Charity Maduka to have a shaken marriage, in contrast to many other marriages in Nigeria and elsewhere.

It is also remarkable that they trusted each other absolutely up to the point Mrs Maduka breathed her last on Saturday. Mr Maduka has been quoted many times as saying that his wife could withdraw as much as N10 billion without reference to him or obtain credit to this amount unilaterally. Yet, there is no instance of how the high level of trust has been abused. As research has demonstrated, trust is not just a personal virtue but also the basis of prosperity.

In spite of their affluence, the couple is known for their intense spirituality. They have in recent years been seen preaching the gospel even in markets and parks. Their deep spirituality explains, to a large extent, their humility and integrity and other virtues which drive rapid business growth.

Governor Obiano has already called on Dr Maduka to commiserate with him on the death of his wife who was, indeed, his soul mate, pledging special prayers by him and his family for the repose of Mrs Maduka’s soul.

Chief. Obiano has, in addition, condoled with the chairman of the Transition Committee Chairman of Nnewi North Local Government, Prince Chukwudi Orizu, as well as the traditional ruler of Nnewi, Igwe Kenneth Orizu, over Mrs Maduka’s death.

“She was a worthy ambassador of the womenfolk everywhere”, said Governor Obiano.

The Anambra State governor-elect, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has also expressed condolences to the Maduka family.

“Mrs Charity Maduka is an eloquent testimony to the old saying that there is always a woman behind every successful man.

“She was an equal partner in progress in the strictest sense of the expression”, Professor Soludo declared.

“There is so much to learn from her”.

  • Departing Man Utd vice-chairman to choose his successor

Departing Man Utd vice-chairman to choose his successor

Departing Manchester United vice-chairman Ed Woodward will choose his successor.

The Manchester Evening News says Woodward will be the kingmaker in selecting his successor in what is set to be his last major decision before he ends his 16-year association with the club.

United’s last three chief executives – Woodward, David Gill and Peter Kenyon – have all been internal appointments. The club’s managing director, Richard Arnold, joined United in 2007 and effectively occupies the same role Woodward did before he replaced Gill as the de facto chief executive in 2013.

Sources say many of the staff at United are ‘gutted’ Woodward is leaving and shocked by the timing of his resignation. Although Woodward was skewered by the Uefa president Alexander Ceferin over his role in the Super League, some sources are adamant Woodward was genuinely against the concept and has ‘taken a bullet for the Glazers’.

Yet some are sceptical about that narrative given Woodward’s compliance with the Glazers, which dates back to his advising the family on their takeover of United in 2005. Woodward is understood to have told confidants he ‘underestimated’ the heated fan backlash to the breakaway league and conceded he made a mistake.
