The VP said the discussion must now focus on how best to manage the situation by finding a mechanism for increasing supply and moderating demand which will be transparent.

“I think that a more market-driven approach will be best, some price discovery within the context of a managed float is certainly required”, Osinbajo added.

  • APC Ghana chapter urges Tinubu to pick female running mate

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Ghana Chapter, has urged the party’s Presidential Candidate, Sen. Bola Tinubu to pick a female as his running mate.

The Chairman of APC Ghana, Mr Oghenosa Micheletti, who made the appeal in a statement on Friday, recalled that Tinubu, who fielded a female running mate, Mrs Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele ((1999-2003), helped him run a successful government.

Micheletti noted that Tinubu’s choice of a female as deputy led to the emergence of many women as deputy governors in Lagos State.

Newsmen reports that apart from Alhaja Sinatu Ojikutu, who was deputy to former Lagos State Governor, Michael Otedola, from 1992 to 1993, the state has enjoyed having female deputy governors through Tinubu’s support.

They include Sarah Sosan (2007-2011) Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire (2011-2015) and Dr Oluranti Adebule (2015-2019).

Newsmen also reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), had given the presidential and governorship candidates of the 18 registered political parties eight days, to pick and submit the lists of their running mates

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, gave the directive on Thursday in Abuja, at a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).

Micheletti who is also the Treasurer of APC Diaspora Chairmen Forum, congratulated Tinubu on his emergence as APC Presidential Candidate, adding that the former Lagos State governor’s candidature would usher in a Nigeria that everyone envisaged.

“What this also means is that when Tinubu wins, Nigeria will have its first female vice president that will go down in history.

“Tinubu’s candidature will ensure victory for APC in 2023 and ultimately, the consolidation of President Muhammadu Buhari’s legacies.

“With a female vice presidential candidate, Tinubu will be the first presidential candidate of a ruling party to do so, and it will usher in the gender balance that some of us advocate for.

“Tinubu shall consolidate on infrastructure, confront decisively the insecurity challenges in the country, and address the economy, using a more magnifying Lagos State template for the nation.”

According to him, the APC, through its primaries, has again shown Nigerians that it remains a truly progressive party.

“The landslide victory of our Leader, Tinubu is an indication that our delegates made the right choice; his popularity and acceptance as the only formidable politician that can guarantee victory for our party in the general election is evident in the wide margin of results at the primaries.

“No doubt his track record as a true democrat and impactful leader through the years, is an undeniable factor in his triumph.’

The APC Ghana chairman also applauded the party’s national chairman, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, for organising a free and fair primary election where the will of the people prevailed.

“We appreciate our president, His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari for his exemplary leadership, particularly for not imposing any candidate on the party.

“We also congratulate all the aspirants for displaying great sportsmanship which has added value to our democratic system.

“It is now time to close ranks and unite the party for the tasks ahead. The party leadership must reach out to all aggrieved members especially the aspirants in the contest and their followers, because we are one family that can only win in 2023 with a united front,” Micheletti added.

He, therefore, pledged the support of members of the party in Ghana for the APC in the 2023 General Elections.

Tinubu won the APC Presidential Primary on Wednesday, beating 13 other aspirants to clinch the party’s ticket.

  • LABOUR PARTY: Group describes Ezenwafor as an opposition tool

A group under the aegis of PETER OBI FOR PRESIDENT 2023 has described Jude Ezenwafor, who was recently declared as Labour Party’s presidential candidate by a faction of the party, as a tool in the hands of those that see Obi’s Presidential aspiration as their biggest threat.

Obi, who vied for the position of vice-president in the 2019 Nigerian general election under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), was elected as the party’s presidential candidate at a primary election.

A faction of the Labour Party, led by its former Deputy National Chairman, Callistus Okafor, on Wednesday elected Ezenwafor as its presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections.

    Labour

Reacting to the development, the group in a statement by Ebuka Okoye asserted that Ezenwafor is a member of All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA.

According to the group, the declaration of Ezenwafor as LP’s presidential candidate was a mind game stretched towards meddling with the minds of Peter Obi’s supporters.

The statement partly read: “He was deployed to distract teeming Nigerians that are yearning for Obi’s emergence as the President of the federal republic of Nigeria. Declaring himself as LP’s presidential candidate is a mind game stretched towards meddling with the minds of Obi’s supporters.

“We’ve overcome the initial speculation that our vote will not count, and they’re on another devil’s mission to whistle our hope from discharging our legal rights as citizens of this great country.

“Remind you that these bad eggs, will not stop from playing their mind games. This is to further prove to us that we’re doing very well with this project.

“It should also encourage us to sustain the tempo and prove to them that we are their doom. The end of their game starts with and will end with us.

“Never again! Enough is enough!! We must take back our country from them!!!”

    Labour

    Netizens reaction:

    Matthew Onumanyi:
“If he’s a member of apga, why allowing himself to be used for this, an Igbo man for that matter…?”

    Shedrack Chinedu Nwankwoeke:
“Why Igbo man always allowed to be used against his brother, God have mercy on Igbo’s.”

    Akudo Humble:
We are pushing it because of the individual involve called Peter Obi not because of party called labour party so if he is the one youth might not be interested as the are now…So pls nwanna keep calm he might give you appointment then you wait for 2030….I come in peace.”

    Harrison Okafor
“South East youths should first of all teach him a lesson. No one can stop Obi’s movement.”

    Gandulong Zhattau:
“Chief Ezenwafor is a joker to say the least. If he wants to join the train and be part of this success story for President Peter Obi come 2023, he is free to do so.”

    Bala Ovyedivine Ubangari:
“I think this is Critical and the Right Time for Igbo’s to Take a Stand to DEAL Decisively with these kind of usable tools of evil among them, and also the Well meaning Nigerian youths on this movement to take a Strong Stand and be Ready for any eventuality that may rise against this Course of taking back our Nation from the evil politicians.

“Note that as the political activities progresses, some of our gullible youths will be used against this movement, but for sure we Must Remained United across tribes, religion’s and region to have this achieved, with Almighty God on our side we’ll Succeed!”

    Samuel Olayode Fakunle:
Ndigbo need to be very careful this time around. Don’t miss this golden opportunity.”

  • Our next Vice President – By Dakuku Peterside

Our next Vice President – By Dakuku Peterside

In the race to brace the tape of the presidency in 2023, the most consequential decision as to who would fly the flag of the major parties is made by delegates – a new set of power brokers, thanks to section 84(8) of the amended Electoral Act. PDP delegates chose Atiku Abubakar, and APC delegates will select one from a pack of thirteen ”shortlisted” aspirants. The other parties, often referred to as fringe parties, will also choose presidential candidates.

The next most consequential decision would be outside the purview of these “new gods of presidential nomination” called delegates. And it will be made by the nominated presidential candidates in consultation with a handful of party leaders. I am referring to the choice of presidential running mates, one of whom would be our next Vice President (VP). It is traditional in presidential democracies that the Presidential candidates select the Vice-Presidential candidates to run with them in the general elections for the office of the presidency.

The choice of the vice-presidential candidates made by the presidential candidates is not always a straightforward affair depending on the maturity of the democracy. In advanced democracies, the prominent basis for choosing a vice-presidential candidate is geopolitical electoral balancing or partnership that culminates in a qualified candidate to help the presumptive President run the state.

The vice president, although having a limited constitutional role compared with the President, plays a vital role in leading the country, but most importantly, must be very presidential as he is a heartbeat away from the President under emergency, for example, when the President is incapacitated, resigns or dies.

For this reason, the President must choose someone capable of running the state and not just a lame duck with little or no presidential sagacity, capabilities, and skills. Even though the first US Vice President, John Adams said the position was “the most insignificant invention ever contrived by man”, the position has come a long way since the 18th century.

The selection of a running mate is complex, with all sorts of consideration outside the severe issues of a candidate’s suitability based on presidential qualities and capacity to lead and make a meaningful impact. Often, petty, extraneous, and insignificant issues determine who gets nominated as a Vice Presidential candidate without considering that a Vice President is a potential President. Whether in the APC, PDP, Labour, or any of the other parties in Nigeria, five things are topmost in choosing a Vice President, and none of these affects the quality of governance.

The first is ethnic or geopolitical balancing. It is an unwritten rule that the President and the vice will not come from the same region, zone, or ethnic group. There is a North/South divide in this case, where if the President comes from the North, the Vice President will come from the South and Vice versa.

Also, if the President comes from one major ethnic group, the vice president will come from another. The second primary consideration is religious balancing, often Christian versus Muslim and vice versa. Rarely will both the presidential and vice-presidential candidates be of  the same religion . The case of Abiola/Kingibe in 1993 is an exception.

The third factor is intra-party group interest. The party’s internal power dynamics and factions may play an essential role in a vice president’s choice to carry every faction along. The fourth consideration is the ability of the vice president to raise money to prosecute the election because presidential elections are very capital intensive, and a deep purse is vital in conducting election campaigns. The fifth consideration is the ability of the vice president to win votes in the presidential elections. This is considered by looking at the political structure of the VP candidates or their popularity and electability.

For now, PDP has produced a presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. However, he is playing a cat- and-mouse game, waiting for APC to choose its flag bearer first before deciding on a running mate. This has not stopped clandestine manoeuvres, speculations, high-wire politicking, and intrigues. In the APC, the potential running mate is a matter of conjecture, permutation, and strategic positioning by all those who are interested.

I advocate that we have a paradigm shift in choosing VPs in Nigeria. Although the factors considered above in selecting a VP emanate from our peculiar political circumstances and history, and although some of them make sense and may be logical considerations, we must make them peripheral and auxiliary factors in choosing a VP candidate by the presidential candidates.

At the bottom of the issues that will influence the choice of a running mate who is a potential Vice President, in our clime , is the capacity to function as President. The potential VP must have a deep understanding of policies and economic issues in the country. He must understand and buy into the vision of the likely President and how he fits in with executing policies and projects to achieve that vision. Another important consideration would seem to be that of compatibility between the president and his deputy.  Our next VP must have a demonstrable and proven ability to be a provider of solutions to national problems.

The Yar’adua-Jonathan case is still fresh in our minds. Providence calls, and we were stuck with Goodluck Jonathan, the VP, as the Acting President and later President. Jonathan was immediately expected to act presidential and continue the programmes, projects, and visions of the Yar’adua administration. This experience underscores the importance of choosing a VP carefully and allowing having the  executive capacity to function as a president to trump all other considerations in choosing a VP candidate.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that the club of governors in APC and PDP have emerged as the most crucial bloc in deciding who a potential running mate should be. And I will not be surprised if the major parties go for them. It will be interesting to see how the other blocs in the party firmaments and political structures will react to the dominance of the club of governors in this case. My primary concern is not where the VP candidates come from but their suitability. Nigeria can get it right now and join the league of mature democracies that allow capacity rather than sentimental reasons to shape the choice of VP candidates.

Even the electorate does not pay much attention to who the Vice-Presidential candidates are. Often, the issue of VP is reduced to ethnic or regional sentiments, and it gives politicians from the area the VP candidate comes from access to the villa. The common misconception that VPs do not matter in the political equation and are powerless in the scheme of things is wrong and must change with time. I only assume that this idea is perpetuated over time because of the inability of VPs to succeed their principals as presidents. However, we must never forget that VP plays a critical economic role in Nigeria. The VP has some constitutional functions, including presiding over National Economic Council. Imagine having a VP that cannot manage and make meaningful input into the NEC. That will be disastrous!

In the absence of linking the potential VPs to the quality of input and output of governance, three key issues stare us in the face as parties and presidential candidates choose VP candidates. First, Nigerians should demand to know our potential VP as much as we want to know our presidential hopefuls so we can make an informed decision. Second, there are certain minimal qualities a potential VP must possess for the joint ticket to earn our confidence. And finally, a VP is a president in the waiting, so he  must share his idea of how he can turn around the country with the Nigerian people.

The choice of VP candidate should send a signal on what matters to our presidential candidates. Is it politics, mundane governance issues, economy, or new thinking on how to salvage Nigeria? VP candidate should not be about satisfying petty sentiments or settling those who lost in internal party politics or those who can raise money for the election. We should see beyond these. We must acknowledge our time and realise that we need our best hands to bring us out of the political and economic quagmire. VP candidature is not a souvenir but a call to salvage the nation at a time of national economic and security crisis.

The net effect of my proposition is that in the Presidential democratic system, the Executive at the centre of government is embodied in the President. As the executive head of the government, the President appoints and assembles all other members of the Executive to collaborate with him to execute and enforce the law and lead the people to prosperity. One person the President must choose and run within the election is his VP. The VP is a critical stakeholder in the presidency and, as such, must be selected carefully. The choice of the VP must transcend parochialism and pedantic reasoning. The VP candidature is serious business and must be treated as such. I must argue that the choice of a president’s VP says a lot about the psychology and direction of the presidency if the presidential candidate wins. One can extrapolate, albeit unscientifically, about the presidency’s mood, feel, and impact. If the presidential candidate gets his first choice of appointment (the VP) wrong, how can we trust him to get other essential appointments to the executive arm of government right?

  • I have offers in APC to be Vice President – Zulum

I have offers in APC to be Vice President – Zulum

Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno has announced that some associates of key presidential aspirants of All Progressives Congress (APC) have offered him Vice President slot.

Zulum made this known on Thursday while addressing delegates at the state governorship primaries where he emerged unopposed as APC governorship candidate for 2023.

The governor, however, said he preferred to remain governor of Borno to focus on his programmes for the state than go for the position of vice president.

“As you all know, the APC will be holding presidential primaries coming weekend.

“I have seen all kinds of promotional media content, including articles by notable columnists, associating me with the 2023 presidency.

“Let me reveal with apologies, that some close associates of key presidential aspirants have sent me offers for the position of running mate, as possible Vice President, depending on the outcome of the APC presidential primaries by the weekend.

“I have thought deeply about these offers because becoming Vice President is considered attractive.

“I have thought about all the powers and privileges of being VP. I can see the honour of presiding over meetings attended by Governors and ministers and the privilege of having a presidential Jet at one’s disposal. I can see the honour of presidential receptions within and outside Nigeria.

“However, I have asked myself, that should I get the opportunity to become VP and raise my political profile, what happens to all our ongoing works for the people of Borno State?

“We have built more than 10, 000 houses and currently more of such and reconstructing existing ones, for ongoing resettlement of our people. We have resettled more than 20 communities so far.

“Yet, thousands of our fellow citizens are still homeless and in desperate need of food, water and healthcare.

“We have adopted a development plan that we are already implementing.

I have asked myself, what happens to all these plans that I am central to, which are helping to fast track our recovery in Borno State?

“Ladies and gentlemen, the killings in Kala-Balge at the weekend made me more critical and the incident seriously reminded me of the challenges that are still ahead of us in Borno State.

“I came to the conclusion that while a chance to become Vice President could benefit my profile as an individual, becoming reelected as Governor of Borno State has the potential of more overall and more assurance of benefit to the good people of Borno State.

“I therefore say that while I thank those who may be considering me for the position of VP, I prefer to stay back and work drastically for the people of Borno State because for me as a citizen of Borno State.

“Working with others to hastily rebuild Borno State is the most urgent need and it is beyond any aspiration,” Zulum said.

  • No Igbo politician should run as vice-presidential candidate in 2023 – Ohaneze

No Igbo politician should run as vice-presidential candidate in 2023 – Ohaneze

The apex socio-political organisation in the Southeast, the Ohaneze Ndigbo, declared on Thursday that no politician of Southeast extraction should accept to be running mate to any presidential candidate in 2023.

President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Prof. George Obiozor made the declaration at the Imeobi Ohaneze Ndigbo meeting in Enugu.

Obiozor said the clamour for Igbo to be elected president of Nigeria was morally and historically justifiable and a project to which every Igbo must commit

“All the double dealings about zoning and rotation of power are orchestrated conspiracy to deprive the Southeast of the right to produce the president.

“I encourage all the presidential aspirants from the zone to remain focused, tenacious and optimistic,’’ Obiozor said.

He explained that the Political Action Committee (PAC) of the Ohaneze Ndigbo would meet several eminent Nigerians to persuade them to appreciate why a politician of Southeast extraction should be elected as president of Nigeria.

Obiozor lamented the weekly “sit-at-home’’ order observed on Mondays in the Southeast and said the Igbo are recording huge losses in incomes as a result of its observance.

“Ndigbo has tried severally to persuade the youths to realise the consequences of their actions,’’ he noted.

Among prominent lgbo leaders in attendance at the Imeobi were Chief Nnia Nwodo, the ninth President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Sen. Victor Umeh, Peter Umeadi, Allison Madueke, Chris Iwuanyanwu and Prof. Fred Eze.
