2023 Elections: RCCG advised not to campaign for Osinbajo

Ex- president Goodluck Jonathan’s aide and a socio-political activist, Reno Omokri has called on the Redeemed Christian Church of God, (RCCG) to desist from promoting one of their own, Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo and instead focus on preaching the gospel.

Omokri made his position known when reacting to comments from the head of politics and Governance of RCCG, Pastor Timothy Olaniyan, who mentioned that VP Osinbajo is the best man to lead the country starting from 2023.

Omokri through his facebook verified page advised RCCG to instead pray for the VP and not campaign for him

The activist appealed to General Overseer, Pastor E. A. Adeboye to call his members to order .

He said, “‪It is very dangerous for the Redeemed Christian Church of God to politically promote Osinbajo. Churches are meant to promote Christ. If churches and mosques start promoting candidates, then, they are no longer religious organisations and should start paying tax!‬

“It is alright for the candidates to visit the church and Pastor Adeboye for prayers and his blessings. But when the Redeemed Christian Church of God sets up a politics directorate, and the head of that unit starts openly campaigning for Osinbajo, in his official capacity, then things are falling apart!

“‪GO Adeboye should call RCCG’s political directorate to order before they start what they can’t finish!”‬

  • 2023: I’ll never settle for vice-president position – Wike

    2023: I’ll never settle for vice-president position – Wike

Presidential aspirant Nyesom Wike says he will never settle for vice-president position as the contest for the plum job hots up, ahead of the presidential election next year.

“I’m not coming out to negotiate to be vice to anyone, I’m coming out to contest for the number one position in the country,’’ Wike, who is currently the governor of Rivers told party chiefs in Benin on Thursday.

He lamented the pervading atmosphere of insecurity in the country, saying that that there was need for Nigeria to spend big on intelligence gathering to curb insecurity.

The out-spoken PDP governor argued that one of the key issues responsible for persistent insecurity in the country was due to inability of the Federal Government to spend enough money on intelligence gathering to stop insecurity.

“There is need to spend adequate money on intelligence to avert insecurity in the country. You don’t wait to allow events to happen before trying to tackle them.”

Wike noted that the first criteria for any president to be successful in Nigeria was the ability of such president to secure the nation and protect lives and properties of citizens.

“It, therefore, takes a committed leadership to ensure adequate security in the country.”

He explained that he was in Benin to inform PDP chieftains and delegates that he had made himself available to run for the office of president next year.

Wike noted that his antecedents and achievements when he was council chairman, minister and now governor were all visible for everyone to see.

He said that if he was given the mandate by the PDP in the party’s presidential primaries next month, he would end up winning the presidential election.

“We must have a candidate who listens to the grassroots. I have the capacity to face the All Progressives Congress in 2023.

“Give me the ticket and have your confidence that we will takeover power in May 2023. Don’t allow anybody to disabuse your mind from voting for Wike.

“We cannot continue to give excuses why we are losing elections.”

The presidential aspirant said further that there was need to change the narrative on “the dis-connect’’ between government and party.

According to him, government cannot do anything without carrying the party along.

“Leadership should not be a cabal thing,’’ he stated.

The governor was earlier at the palace of the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, where he told the king that if elected president, he would focus on checking insecurity with massive investment in intelligence gathering.

He pointed out that it was only in a secure environment that economic activities, agriculture and investments in infrastructure could thrive.

Wike recalled that he was in Benin one and a half years ago as the Director-General of the campaign for the re-election of Gov. Godwin Obaseki.

“I have come to Benin to talk to delegates of our party who will be part of our national convention on May 28 and May 29.

“The way our country has fared, Nigeria needs somebody that will see white and say it is white and see black and say it is black.

If the PDP gives me the ticket, I have enough experience to tackle Nigeria’s plethora of problems, having been a local government chairman, minister of state over-seeing education and now governor.”

The Benin king in his response, lauded the competence and capability of the presidential aspirant, citing his achievements as governor.

“Wike is our son, we love him and if I say so, I believe I am speaking on behalf of our ancestors.

“We will keep praying for him so that he does not come across anybody that will mislead him, mis-inform him and may he and his family never come across harm.”

The Oba urged political leaders to promote and ensure sustenance of African culture and traditions, saying that the colonial masters tried to erase African mores after discovering that Benin Kingdom and other African kingdoms had superior administrations and civilizations.

Also speaking, Chief Dan Orbih, the PDP South South National Vice-Chairman, urged delegates to support Wike, whom he described as a “political elephant”.

Orbih said the nation needed a president who would “say it as it is’’.

The party chieftain said that Nigeria was currently in deep slumber and that the nation needed Wike to wake the nation up.

He recalled that at the party’s last summit, held in Uyo in Akwa-Ibom, the summit had resolved that the next president should come from the South South.

President Muhammadu Buhari has charged the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, to fully take advantage of Nigeria’s new position at the International Criminal Police Organization (ICPO), also known as INTERPOL, to reinforce the campaign against insecurity in the country.

The President spoke yesterday when he received in audience the Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, who was at the Presidential Villa to present to him AIG Garba Baba Umar, a Nigerian senior police officer who was recently elected as Vice President (Africa) and Executive Committee Member of INTERPOL.

While congratulating the IGP, Usman Alkali Baba, who was also at the event, for having one of his men representing the whole of Africa, President Buhari said the new position should be used to encourage security personnel to put more effort into coping with their task of subduing insecurity in the country.

“This is very good for our Police and I hope that the IGP would take note. Now that one of you is representing the whole of Africa, it is something that you must take to the police, especially the officer corps so that they can put in more effort in trying to cope with our security challenges,” he said.

  • Kamala Harris becomes first female VP to hold US President Power as Biden hands over

Kamala Harris becomes first female VP to hold US President Power as Biden hands over

President Joe Biden will transfer power to Vice President Kamala Harris during the “brief” time Friday he is under anesthesia for a colonoscopy as part of a regular health check, the White House said.

Biden, the oldest person to hold the presidency in US history, went to the Walter Reed Medical Center just outside of Washington early Friday on the eve of his 79th birthday.

The White House described the appointment as Biden’s “routine annual physical.” It was his first since taking office in January.

Despite the administration’s stressing that there was nothing unusual in the hospital visit, Biden’s departure by motorcade from the White House early Friday was announced at the last minute.

His public schedule, issued the previous night, listed only the traditional ceremony to “pardon” a turkey ahead of Thanksgiving and departure for a weekend at home in Delaware.

During a colonoscopy examination, Biden will be anesthetized and as in past practice the vice president will assume power, which includes control over the US armed forces and the nuclear weapons arsenal.

“President Biden will transfer power to the vice president for the brief period of time when he is under anesthesia. The vice president will work from her office in the West Wing during this time,” Press Secretary Jen Psaki said.

Harris, 57, is the first woman to hold the vice presidency and made an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic Party nomination in 2020, before being picked as Biden’s running mate. However briefly, her temporary holding of presidential powers will also make history.

Psaki noted that a similar temporary transfer of power, “following the process set out in the Constitution,” had been carried out when president George W. Bush underwent the same procedure in 2002 and 2007.

Psaki said that a written “summary” of the findings from the president’s exam would be released “later this afternoon.”

Any details on Biden’s health are sure to be closely watched, given speculation on whether he will stand by his stated intention to seek a second term in 2024.

Biden pledged before his election a year ago to be “totally transparent” with voters about all aspects of his health.

  • President settles to run for Senate after tenure expires in 2022 as daughter picks Vice Presidential form

President settles to run for Senate after tenure expires in 2022 as daughter picks Vice Presidential form

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday filed to contest the Senate elections next year, seeking a way to stay in politics while facing an international probe into his deadly drug war.

Duterte, who is constitutionally barred from seeking a second six-year term, filed his candidacy at the Commission on Elections office, minutes before a deadline to join the race.

According to reports, a lawyer submitted the paperwork on behalf of the president, quelling speculation he would run for vice president — the same post his daughter, Sara, is contesting.

Duterte, 76, had previously said he would run for vice president, before changing his mind and announcing plans to retire from politics.

But presidential communications chief Martin Andanar told local media on Saturday that Duterte had flagged plans to run for the country’s second-highest office after all, and would file his candidacy on Monday.

There were questions over whether Sara Duterte would make a late switch into the presidential race after hundreds of her fans gathered outside the Commission on Elections office on Monday.

Sara had been widely expected to seek the presidency in a bid to succeed her father, and potentially protect him from criminal charges in the Philippines and ICC investigators.

But on Saturday she filed for the vice presidential race and that appeared unchanged by Monday’s 5:00 pm (0900 GMT) deadline.

  • Chelsea legend, Didier Drogba resigns as Vice-President of Côte d’Ivoire Players’ Association

Chelsea legend, Didier Drogba resigns as Vice-President of Côte d’Ivoire Players’ Association

Former Ivory Coast star striker Didier Drogba on Tuesday said he was stepping down as vice-president of his country’s Footballers Association (AFI) accusing it of “inaction” on defending player interests.

“I hereby announce I have decided to resign from my post as vice-president of the AFI and from its executive committee,” the former Chelsea attacker said in an open letter to the media.

Instead of defending players’ rights and interests he said the AFI “does not respond to their needs and expectations”.

Former national skipper Drogba had been widely expected to head the West African country’s football association FIF but last year saw his candidacy snubbed as the AFI alleged he has not been sufficiently involved with the players’ representative organisation.

He still hopes nonetheless to win a November election to that post.

FIFA placed the FIF under its own remit last December saying the organisation was suffering from inherent internal problems and structural weaknesses and was not fully complying with statutory and regulatory requirements which all FIFA member associations must follow.

The normalisation committee now overseeing the Ivory Coast game must choose a FIF president.

FIFA in January chose senator Mariam Dao Gabala, a newcomer to the football world, to oversee the normalisation committee which comprises four members.
