Nigeria’s Vice President (VP) Yemi Osinbajo in view of security challenges ravaging the country has said every Nigerian deserves the protection of their lives and properties.

VP Osinbajo stated this at a two-day national security summit holding at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) conference centre in Abuja.

TheNewsGuru reports the summit is aimed at providing an all-inclusive platform for finding long-term solutions to the security challenges in the country.

“Every Nigerian deserves the protection of their lives and properties by the government,” Osinbajo said, adding “We must avoid the danger of allowing this conflict to escalate further to religious or ethnic conflict; this is the responsibility of political and religious elites in Nigeria”.

Osinbajo gave kudos to the security agencies saying that despite constraint in finances they’ve been able to work with the resources they have.

“We need to consider the following for the efficiency in the security sector: 1. Police structure must change by tripling the number of officers; 2. There should be state and community policing by curtailing the arms being smuggled into the country; and 3. There should be consolidation with neighboring state within borders,” he said.

In his opening remarks, Senate President Bukola Saraki said “People who should be neighbours are turning on one another and taking up arms.

“These attacks and reprisal attacks are an intolerable cycle of hell that must be broken. Killings, kidnappings, mayhem and general lawlessness cannot be the new normal,” he added.

  • French court jails Vice President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodorin Obiang for embezzlement

A French court on Friday found the Vice President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodorin Obiang guilty in absentia for using money plundered from his country to buy property and luxury cars in France.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Teodorin Obiang who is also the eldest son of President Teodoro Obiang was also handed a three-year suspended prison sentence and a suspended 30 million euros ($35 million) fine.

The Paris court found Mr. Obiang, 48, guilty of embezzlement and ordered the confiscation of more than 100 million euros worth of his French assets.

    Mr. Obiang denied the charges.

The case is the first of several to reach court in a broader judicial investigation into allegations of illicit acquisitions in France by long-time leaders and family relatives in several African countries including Gabon and Congo Republic.

Mr. Obiang was first put on trial in January, but the case, 10 years in the works, was postponed after his lawyers argued they had not had enough time to prepare his defence.

Mr. Obiang’s luxury residence on Paris’ Avenue Foch – a grand, sweeping road near the Arc de Triomphe often favoured by wealthy African expatriates and politicians, was among the assets scrutinised during the trial.

The property, bought for 25 million euros in 2005, had a gym, hair-dressing studio and disco with cinema screen.

Paris prosecutor, Jean-Yves Lourgouilloux, said Mr. Obiang’s “fraudulent spending” amounted to more than 150 million euros.

His father, President Teodoro Mbasogo, has ruled Equatorial Guinea, a former Spanish colony, for more than three decades, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.

The rights groups have labelled his administration as one of the world’s most corrupt regimes.

Photos: Suspended NIA DG, Ayo Oke denied access to VP’s office

Shortly after announcing his suspension from office as the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), by President Muhammadu Buhari, Amb. Ayo Oke was pictured trying to get through to the Vice President’s office but was denied entry by security operatives.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that this was after the just suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Engr. Babachir Lawal also met with the Vice President in his office.

Oke, who noticed the presence of State House correspondents, however turned back and attempted to pass through Vice President’s exit gate.

He was prevented from going out through that point by security officials; the security also stopped the DG from passing through the service chief’s gate.

The NIA boss later left the Presidential Villa without seeing the Vice-President.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that President Buhari on Wednesday ordered the immediate suspension of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr David Lawal and the Director General, National Intelligence Agency (NIA) Amb. Ayo Oke, pending the outcome of investigation of allegations levelled against them.

Media and Publicity Special Adviser, Mr Femi Adesina, said the president ordered an investigation into the allegations of violations of law and due process made against the SGF, Mr David Lawal, in the award of contracts under the Presidential Initiative on the North East (PINE).

The President also ordered a full-scale investigation into the discovery of large amounts of foreign and local currencies by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in a residential apartment at Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos, over which the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) has made a claim.

“The investigation is also to enquire into the circumstances in which the NIA came into possession of the funds, how and by whose or which authority the funds were made available to the NIA, and to establish whether or not there has been a breach of the law or security procedure in obtaining custody and use of the funds.

“The President has also directed the suspension of the Director General of the NIA, Ambassador Ayo Oke, pending the outcome of the investigation,’’ the statement added.

  • I will be Vice, President of Nigeria soon – Fayose declares

Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Governors Forum and Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has said he will soon emerge as Vice President and subsequently as President of Nigeria.

Fayose revealed this on Monday during a live interview on African Independent Television, AIT.

In his words: “It is not by power. It is destiny. I did not believe it when I became Ekiti governor after eight years of leaving office.

“I will be the vice president of Nigeria, even the President very soon.”

The governor also took time out to criticize the recently installed chairman of the party, Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff.

Speaking further, the Governor criticized the embattled national chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, Ali Modu Sheriff.

“He is a general without an army. If democracy is about people and party politics is about people, tell Senator Ali Modu Sheriff to bring out the people behind him.

“You will see all the senators at our own meetings, who are those behind Sheriff?

“When holding a press conference, they will use camera to control them like this, just about three of them,” Fayose said.

  • Jonathan, not Buhari’s administration initiated N250m gate house for Vice President

Jonathan, not Buhari’s administration initiated N250m gate house for Vice President

The Office of the Vice President has denied media reports that the proposed N250million gate house for Prof. Yemi Osinbajo’s official residence was captured in the 2017 budget.

The Senior Special Assistant on media to the Vice President, Laolu Akande revealed this in a statement on Monday.

Akande maintained that the N250m gate house for the occupant of the Office of the Vice President was initiated by the immediate past administration as far back as 2010.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC Dino Melaye had blown the whistle of the outrageous amount for the gatehouse and had called for immediate review of the proposal.

However, Akande clarified that the proposed plan of the Jonathan administration to build a new official residence for the occupant of the Office of the Vice President, including the controversial gatehouse preceded this administration.

The project which started in 2010, was initiated and funded by the immediate past administration, but had never featured in the two budget proposals of the Buhari administration: neither in the 2016 nor the 2017 spending plans.

Any suggestion therefore that this project benefits our administration or that it reflects our spending style or preferences is not only misleading but blatantly false. “Besides, the incumbent Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has said publicly that he considers Aguda House, which he currently occupies, a befitting official residence for the Vice President and sufficient for his needs.

While the project is now about 85% complete, the Federal Government, in the circumstances, will decide at the appropriate time what is the best use for the 14 buildings already on the project site.”
