Osimhen who scored 18 goals in 38 appearances for the Ligue 1 side in the 2019-20 season moves to Naples in a deal reported to be worth €50 million (£45million/$59million).

The 21-year-old had been linked with several top European clubs following his impressive goal scoring season, including Arsenal and Liverpool.

Why Osimhen dumped agent for Napoli move

Victor Osimhen’s former agent Franco Iovino of Star Factory claimed the forward dumped his agency on the advice of Lille, who wanted to sell him only to Napoli because of the relationship between the Presidents of the clubs.

Napoli has, however, have been in the front of the race to secure the signature of the highly-rated striker but negotiations for the transfer was delayed with Iovino revealing the forward was hesitant in completing the deal.

Osimhen had previously expressed his fears about racism in Italy and Senegal international Kalidou Koulibaly confirmed the Nigeria international called him to make an enquiry about racial discrimination in the European country.

Last week, L’Equipe revealed negotiations have now reopened after the forward made up his mind to join the Stadio San Paolo outfit and Goal confirmed the Super Eagles centre-forward changed his agent.

“It was not clear what happened. Perhaps something fishy went down, probably between the Presidents of Lille and Napoli,” Iovino told Radio Punto Nuovo, as per Football Italia.

“The negotiations didn’t slow down because of Star Factory but because the player kept hesitating. William D’Avila is a home agent in Lille. The club will surely have advised Osimhen to leave us and go with him.

“They will certainly have promised him money. Lille for some reason wanted to only sell to Napoli because there’s an excellent relationship between the Presidents.

“At the moment, my company doesn’t need to look itself in the mirror, the two clubs do.”

He told CalcioNapoli24: “A few hours ago Manchester United phoned Osimhen’s new agent to find out if he had signed with Napoli.

“If an offer from United comes, there would not be many possibilities because they have an economic power superior to that of Napoli.”

Osimhen has quickly emerged as one of Europe’s top prospects following a breakout season in France.

According to multiple reports, Napoli director Cristiano Guintoli met Lille president Gerard Lopez and Osimhen’s intermediaries for more face-to-face negotiations on Monday.

Nigeria’s Osimhen to replace Aubameyang at Arsenal

Arsenal have identified Lille striker, Victor Osimhen, as a replacement for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

According to the Daily Express UK, Aubameyang is set to leave the Emirates after this season, when he would have one year left on his contract.

The Gabon striker has so far failed to agree on new terms with the Gunners.

Arsenal chiefs are keen to avoid a repeat of last summer when Aaron Ramsey left the Emirates as a free agent to join Juventus.

So there is the option of offloading Aubameyang, to ensure they get a fee for the player.

Arsenal, however, won’t let that get through their transfer plans and may turn their attention to Osimhen.

The 21-year-old forward enjoyed an impressive season as he recorded 18 goals and six assists in 38 appearances across all competitions.

The Nigeria Football Federation has reached out to Super Eagles’ forward, Victor Osimhen who lost his father on Saturday evening, expressing grief and a groundswell of sorrow among the Nigerian Football family over the passing of the patriarch of the Osimhen family.

Reports said Mr. Patrick Osimhen, 80, died in Lagos on Saturday night after a brief illness.

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Amaju Melvin Pinnick was the first to reach out to the player following the outbreak of the sad news, and he assured the former U17 World Cup winner of the empathy and support of the country’s football family at this challenging moment for the youngster and his family.

“I have spoken to Victor Osimhen and expressed the sorrow of the NFF and the entire Nigerian Football family. His club, Lille OSC of France have given him a private aircraft to come to Nigeria to be with his family and probably for the burial rites. We have applied for landing permit but we are yet to get this. However, we are still on it and hopeful for the sake of the young lad.

“The loss of either parent is usually a moment of heartbreak for anyone. We condole with Victor (Osimhen) at this moment and pray that God will grant his late father eternal rest, while also granting the family the fortitude to bear the great loss.”

Osimhen is the record holder for number of goals at the FIFA U17 World Cup, after winning the top scorer at the 2015 finals in Chile with 10 goals as the Golden Eaglets cruised to a fifth title, and has scored four goals for Nigeria at senior level, including three in the Super Eagles’ 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Lesotho late last year.
