Osimhen recovers from injury, set to return next week

Super Eagles and Napoli point man, Victor Osimhen is set to recover from a hamstring injury  he sustained on international duty last month.

The 24-year-old is already working his way back to full fitness.

The striker last appeared for the Serie A champions in the 3-1 loss to Fiorentina on October 8.

Osimhen has missed the Partenopei’s last six games across all competitions.

According to Football Italia, the Nigeria international was not present at the Castel Volturno training ground on Wednesday for new manager Walter Mazzarri’s first session in charge of Napoli, as he was suffering from flu symptoms but is ready to get back to action.

Napoli hopes to have their talismanic forward back in time for the Serie A clash against Atalanta on November 25.

  • Oshoala joins Osimhen in Ballon d’Or history book

Oshoala joins Osimhen in Ballon d’Or history book

Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala both made history for Nigeria and Africa as they finished in an impressive 8th and 20th positions in the 2023 Men and Women’s Ballon d’Or rankings.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Argentina captain Lionel Messi won a record-extending eighth Ballon d’Or for the best player in the world on Monday in Paris, France.

Messi beat Norway’s UEFA player of the year,  and treble winner Erling Haaland of Manchester City to the prestigious prize.

France and Paris St Germain’s Kylian Mbappe completed the list of the top three best players in the world.

A message on Super Falcons’ official X handle congratulated Oshoala for the historic achievement both for Nigeria.

“Asisat Oshoala’s 20th place ranking in the 2023 Women’s Ballon d’Or is a historic and significant achievement for Africa.

“She’s a talented footballer and deserves the recognition. “Congratulations @AsisatOshoala,” it said.

Inter Miami’s Messi, who last won the award in 2021, played a pivotal role in guiding Argentina to their first World Cup title in 36 years in Qatar last season.

Messi has won the Ballon d’Or for a record eighth time, fending off competition from  Manchester City striker Erling Haaland after leading Argentina to the World Cup last year.

Messi, 36, becomes the first MLS-based player to claim the coveted prize, although the triumph comes largely on the back of his exploits with his country in Qatar.

Former Manchester United player and Inter Miami co-owner,  David Beckham handed his prize-signing Messi the award in Paris.

Haaland, who scored 52 goals last season as City won the Treble in 2022-23, finished second in the voting and won the Gerd Muller Trophy given to the best striker of the year.

“I couldn’t imagine having the career that I’ve had. Everything that I’ve achieved,” Messi said after getting his award.

“The fortune I’ve had playing for the best team in the world, the best team in history. It’s nice to win these individual trophies.

“To win the Copa America and then the World Cup, to get it done is amazing. All of them [Ballon d’Or awards] are special for different reasons.”

Prior to Messi receiving his award, Barcelona and Spain midfielder, Aitana Bonmatí won the Ballon d’Or Féminin after a record-breaking year with club and country.

She helped Barça win Liga F and the Champions League last season, before leading Spain to World Cup glory in the summer.

In other awards handed out on Monday, Messi’s Argentina teammate Emiliano Martinez won the Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper.

England and Real Madrid midfielder,  Jude Bellingham was handed the Kopa Trophy as the world’s top player under the age of 21.

During his acceptance speech, Messi made a point of wishing Argentina countryman Diego Maradona happy birthday.

The 1986 World Cup winner, who died on Nov. 22, 2020, would have been 63 on Monday.

“My last mention is for Diego [Maradona],” Messi said. “Today is his birthday.

“So I would like to remember him from here, surrounded by the best players, coaches and people who love football like he did.

“Wherever you are, Diego, happy birthday. This goes also to you.”

Prior to Monday’s ceremony in Paris, no player had won the Ballon d’Or more times than Messi, who first won it in 2009 and then again in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019 and 2021.

Cristiano Ronaldo has won it five times, while Michel Platini, Johan Cruyff and Marco van Basten are all three-time winners.

Messi scored 21 goals in 41 appearances last season as Paris Saint-Germain retained the Ligue 1 title before moving to Inter Miami earlier this year.

Since moving to the U.S., he has scored 11 goals in 14 games for Miami, helping the franchise win its first-ever piece of silverware, the Leagues Cup.

However, he missed several matches through injury at the end of the regular MLS season as Gerardo “Tata” Martino’s side came up short in their late push for a playoff spot.

It is Messi’s performances at the World Cup at the end of 2022 which have earned him an eighth Ballon d’Or as  Argentina ended a 36-year wait to be crowned world champions for the third time.

Messi, as captain, was instrumental to Argentina’s success in Qatar, scoring seven goals and assisting three more as he was named as the Player of the Tournament.

He scored twice in the final and again in the penalty shootout against France.

Lionel Scaloni’s team edged one of the most memorable showpieces in the competition’s history.

Having come up short with Argentina at four previous World Cups, including losing the 2014 final to Germany, it was deemed by many to be his last chance to get his hands on football’s biggest prize.

At 36 years and four months old, he also becomes the second oldest player to ever win the Ballon d’Or.

He replaces 2022  winner Karim Benzema.

Only the inaugural winner, Stanley Matthews in 1956, was older when he won it aged 41.

Messi’s first six Ballons d’Or were won while he played for Barcelona, where he is the club’s record goalscorer and appearance holder.

He won it for a seventh time shortly after joining PSG in 2021 following Copa America success with Argentina.

The Nigerian forward also ranked above Karim Benzema, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane and Lautaro Martinez.

Osimhen had been considered one of the favourites to win this year’s Ballon d’Or, after the top five favourite players for the awards were revealed some six months ago.

He scored 26 goals in the Italian Serie A last season to steer Napoli FC to their first Italian league title in 33 years and also scored five goals in the UEFA Champions League in which Napoli made it to the semi finals.

EPL: Liverpool, Osimhen agree personal terms ahead next season

Reports emanating from UK tabloid paisleygates, shows that Nigerian and Napoli forward, Victor Osimhen have agreed personal terms ahead of season’s transfer window.

Osimhen has been on the radar of Liverpool for sometime now and it appears the lanky attacker will be heading to Anfield come next season.

According to Valter De Maggio, the African striker opted not to extend his contract with the Italian champions and has agreed to join the Reds.

“The president refers to a meeting that took place in Castel di Sangro. The parties had reached an agreement for the renewal, but then Calenda and Osimhen went back on their word.”

“What happened? There was the inclusion of another club, from the Premier League. I’m talking about Liverpool. There would be frequent contacts, but I just learned something else: there would be agreements already reached. Let me clarify: the agreements would be between the Reds and the player, therefore they would not involve Napoli.”

Osimhen won the Paolo Rossi award in the last campaign and netted 31 goals in all competitions for Napoli. Still, he earns a relatively low salary of £75,000 a week.

After a terrific season, the Scudetto winners valued him at around £154m in the summer transfer window but the price has now dropped.

According to a report covered by Calcio Mercato yesterday, club president, Aurelio de Laurentiis, hopes to get a fee of around £87m from the sale of his prized asset.

The 24-year-old has netted 20 goals in 27 appearances for Nigeria and is one of the best goal-scorers in the game at the moment.

Osimhen presently suffers an harmstring injury and is expected to be out of action for a period of four weeks.

  • Nigeria v Mozambique: Osimhen, Iheanacho depart Super Eagles camp

Nigeria v Mozambique: Osimhen, Iheanacho depart Super Eagles camp

The duo of Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Iheanacho have left the Super Eagles camp ahead of Monday’s international friendly against Mozambique.

Both players flew to their respective bases  in England and Italy respectively on Saturday.

Recall that Osimhen suffered a hamstring injury during the 2-2 draw with Saudi Arabia on Friday evening.

He was replaced by Terem Moffi in the second half of the match.

However, Iheanacho’s case is quite different as he was excused from camp to attend to a family emergency.

Peseiro now has at his disposal only three centre-forwards, namely Terem Moffi, Victor Boniface, and Sadiq Umar.

Nigeria will face Mozambique on Monday evening at the Estádio Municipal de Portimão in Portugal.

  • Serie A: Napoli to sue doll store on behalf of Osimhen

Serie A: Napoli to sue doll store on behalf of Osimhen

Serie A champions Napoli have taken steps to sue an Italian toy store over a doll and a video made about Victor Osimhen last season.

The Partenopei claimed the unlicensed doll bears an uncanny resemblance with Victor Osimhen.

Recall that the doll video which shares many similarities with Osimhen went viral on social media last season with many labelling it racism.

The doll’s features include a protective mask with the 9 on it, a light blue jersey and a blond tuft of curly hair.

Napoli released a statement on Thursday evening confirming that the doll is not in any way authorised by the club or Osimhen and is therefore breaching his image rights.

They are planning to take the company to court, but it is yet another contentious situation around Osimhen that Napoli would happily have avoided at this time when his contract extension is in doubt and his rapport with the club remains frosty over their TikTok videos.

  • UCL: Ancelotti labels Osimhen very dangerous ahead Napoli clash

UCL: Ancelotti labels Osimhen very dangerous ahead Napoli clash

Carlo Ancelotti, the manager of Spanish side, Real Madrid has labelled Victor Osimhen as a “very dangerous attacker”.

Real Madrid will slug it out with Napoli on Matchday 2 in the UEFA Champions League taking place at Estadio Diego Armando Maradona on Tuesday night.

Osimhen netted five times for Napoli in the UCL in last season’s campaign.

The Nigeria international also registered 26 goals in 32 league appearances to emerge top scorer in Serie A last season.

The 24-year-old has also been in good form for Napoli this term.

The striker has five goals in seven league outings.

“They are very good forwards who have really broken out in the last year, they have demonstrated their quality and shown they are top-level players,” Ancelotti told Real Madrid’s official website.

“They have amazing talent with different characteristics. Kvaratskhelia is very strong one-on-one and Osimhen is very dangerous.”

Serie A: Osimhen’s agent Calenda makes U-turn, says player will not take legal action against Napoli

Victor Osimhen’s agent Roberto Calenda has taken a U-turn about taking legal action against Napoli following the recent controversy surrounding the mocking TikTok video.

The Nigeria international was infuriated by the  TikTok videos that went viral this week.

The first video mocked his penalty miss against Bologna and the second compared him to a coconut.

Napoli released a statement on the incident on Thursday night.

According to Italian publication, Gazzetta dello Sport, Calenda has decided not to file a lawsuit against Napoli following the release of their statement.

The Nigerian striker has two years remaining on his contract.

A renewal seems incredibly unlikely at this stage, making a departure within the next 12 months a realistic possibility.

Sports Ministry to stage rally for Osimhen, Amusan, Nigerian sportsmen

Nigeria’s Minister of Sports,  Senator John Owan Enoh is perfecting plans to stage a peaceful rally for foreign based Nigerian athletes and footballers facing intimidation and harrassment abroad.

The Minister posited that the news emanating from Napoli about a trending Tiktok video saddened him greatly.

He added that the  recent travails of Amusan have been very worrying to him too.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Amusan was dragged by the Athletics Integrity Unit AIU for three whereabout failures.

Amusan’s  suspension was announced after it was discovered that she had missed three drug tests within a 12-month period. This charge could result in a two-year suspension, even if an athlete has never failed a drug test.

In a statement on Twitter, the AIU said the charge will be heard by the Disciplinary Tribunal.

However, Senator Enoh has said that the he will reach out to Osimhen as he already did with Amusan in a bid to establish fact on their cases.

Continuing, he said that he has reached out to the Minister of Foreign Affaiirs, H.E Yusuf Maitama Tuggar and the Nigerian  Ambassador  to the Republic of Italy Amsaddor Mfawa Abam over the matter.

He added that the Sport ministry will explore diplomatic avenues to resolve the matter, saying that the Sports ministry is committed to ensuring that Nigerian sportsmen are given the respect and accolades they deserve.
