BBNaija 10: Victory reveals housemates who used the most condoms

The interviewer asked: “Who do you think used condoms the most in the house?”

Victory replied: “Before Danboskid left, Danboskid and Zita. I once saw them in a compromising position in the bedroom, and I decided to support them by giving them condoms.

“I don’t know if they used them, but Danboskid shook me after I gave them the condoms, and later that morning, he shook me again.”

  • Funerals of royalty and disloyalty, songs of defeat and victory – By Owei Lakemfa

Funerals of royalty and disloyalty, songs of defeat and victory – By Owei Lakemfa

Funerals, official and unofficial, were held in parts of the world this Monday September 19 to eternally send-off Queen Elizabeth II.

The pre-funeral ceremonies had included the Queen’s coffin which some mischievous people claimed was empty, lying-in-state in Scotland and London with some mourners spending a whole day queuing to view it.

In the official funeral, some 2,000-strong congregation included world leaders, royal family members and the richest in the world gathered. There were some angry reactions that African leaders were packed in buses like school children going on a picnic, while American President, Joe Biden, rode with wife, Jill, in his beast motorcade. To them, it was a display of neo-colonialism.

One Twitter user said: “Those saying that this was to avoid congestion of motorcades; in 2005 while Pope John Paul II was being buried in Rome, over 100 presidents attended and each came with their motorcade.” Despite such royal treatment for Biden, his immediate predecessor, Donald Trump, mocked him for allegedly allowing himself to be relegated to the 14th row at the funeral service.

Some royal watchers attacked Prince Harry, the Queen’s grandson, for alleged disrespect because he held hands with his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, as they left the funeral. Meanwhile, the Queen’s demise had provided an opportunity for some Welsh to question why heir-apparent, William, an Englishman, would wield the title of the Prince of Wales.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby painted the former head of his church in saintly colours claiming she had touched “a multitude of lives” and having been a “joyful” figure for many. This belief must have been shared by some in Africa who mourned her and even held noisy funeral processions on dusty roads.

However, there were some who saw Elizabeth II in a different light. The Economic Freedom Fighters, EFF, one of the main parties in South Africa, said she reigned for 70 years as the head of “an institution built up, sustained, and living off a brutal legacy of dehumanisation of millions of people across the world. We do not mourn the death of Elizabeth, because to us her death is a reminder of a very tragic period in this country and Africa’s history”.

The Communist Party of Britain declared thus: “Elizabeth Windsor has died leaving the kingdom she ruled over poorer, with greater disparities in wealth and income, obscene profiteering and tax evasion…”

Six countries, most notably Russia, were not invited to the Queen’s funeral. This may be due to the fact that the English royalty and the dismantled royals (Tsarists) of Russia, were first cousins. But more likely, because of the War in Ukraine.

Two days after Elizabeth II’s funeral, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a televised address as world leaders gathered in New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

The Western media presented the speech as a sign of the Russian military collapsing. The British Guardian newspaper headline was: “Putin announces partial mobilisation and threatens nuclear retaliation of Ukranian war.” The Reuters headline was: “Putin escalates Ukranian war, issues nuclear threat to West.”

One interpretation that caught my eyes was by conscientious Nigerian lawyer, Jiti Ogunye, who immediately took to the internet with a screaming headline: “PUTIN IS LOSING!” He pronounced magisterially that Putin calling up reservists “is a clear indication that his deployed regular combatants are not able to subdue Ukraine. Also, his plan to hold a sham referendum in the occupied Ukrainian territories shows that he is panting. He has difficulties in administering and militarily holding and dominating the occupied territory.”

These headlines and interpretations made me go back to reread Putin’s address. I recall that at the onset of the war, Russia, having taken out the Ukrainian Navy and Air Force, suddenly withdrew from Kiev and neigbouring cities. To the West, it was a sign that the war was going badly for Russia which was now in retreat. But it turned out that Russia, after bombing Kiev and causing mass population exodus across Ukrainian borders had simply redirected its energy to taking the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics and Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions among others.

I think the timing of Putin’s address was strategic: to let world leaders assembling at the UN appreciate Russia’s views and position.

I glean five decisions from Putin’s address. The first is that the legal status of the pro-Russian rebels fighting in Ukraine “must be the same as the status of military professionals of the Russian army”. This hints at a sort of merger or their recruitment into the Russian military.

The second is that there are going to be referendums in the Russian-controlled parts of Ukrainian; Donetsk, Luhansk Kherson and Zaporizhzhia “on the future of their territories”. This may imply that Russia either wants these areas to become a separate country(ies) or like the Crimea, be merged with Russia as a sort of Greater Russian Federation.

The third decision is a “partial mobilisation in the Russian Federation to defend our Motherland and its sovereignty and territorial integrity”. This implies that Russia wants to formally put its economy and military on war footing. For this, a seventh of the official Russian military reservists would be called up for service.

This means deploying additional 300,000 troops to join the estimated 190,000 Russian soldiers in Ukraine. This is what has been interpreted by some as Russia losing the war in Ukraine. I am not sure about this, but I think such a conclusion may be way off the mark.

The fourth is “increasing the production of weapons and military equipment and using additional production facilities for this purpose”.

The fifth is an allegation by Putin that some high-ranking representatives of the leading North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, NATO, countries are talking “on the possibility and admissibility of using weapons of mass destruction- nuclear weapons-against Russia.” He then added that: “In the event of a threat to the territorial integrity of our country, and to defend Russia and our people, we will certainly make use of all weapon systems available to us. This is not a bluff.” In my analysis, this does not amount to Putin saying he would use nuclear weapons in the Ukrainian war.

Generally, the propaganda oozing out maybe to deaden our sense of reasoning. For instance, the NATO countries think it is alright for them to impose all sorts of sanctions, including financial, on Russia. But when the latter responded by shutting its oil and gas pipes, it is said to be endangering the world.

I reiterate, as before, that the solution to the war in Ukraine is more of negotiations and diplomacy, not claimed high moral grounds, motivating the Ukrainians to sacrifice more, die more, kill more Russians and endless propaganda.

  • What Soludo’s victory means for Anambra people – Gov Obiano

What Soludo’s victory means for Anambra people – Gov Obiano

Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has described the just concluded governorship election as one that presents hope and a new beginning for the South-Eastern state.

Addressing the people of Anambra on Wednesday in his country home of Aguleri, Governor Obiano said the governorship election has enabled, once again, the continuation of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) government for the next four years with Professor Soludo as the governor-elect.

He commended the people for taking a decision to be on the side of progress.

“The outcome of this gubernatorial election presents hope and a new beginning for our dear state,” Governor Obiano said.

“For the second time in the last four years, Ndi Anambra boldly chose to stand on the side of positive history. People who thought 21 over 21 was a fluke have seen history repeat itself in a most memorable way.

“19 over 21 is a massive repeat of history, the difference is just two. Against intimidating odds, we stood tall and reclaimed the dignity of our people.”

Professor Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance had on Wednesday swept to victory in the Anambra governorship elections, winning 19 of the 21 local government areas of the state.

He secured 112,229 votes, twice more than his closest rival – Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to be returned as winner of the election.

Governor Obiano dedicated the victory to the people of Anambra State, especially the people of Ebenebe who ‘rejected the sale of their conscience’ and “stuck to what they believed in”.

He equally expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and to the security agencies for maximum support towards the conduct of what he described as free, fair, and credible polls.

He, however, noted that the victory of the election is not a ‘winner takes all’ situation, but the party’s principle of being their brothers’ and sisters’ keeper will apply as arms are wide open to receive and welcome those who are willing.

  • Victory comes from God, By Owei Lakemfa

    By Owei Lakemfa

IT seemed a depressing day. Sunday July 18, 2021. News filtered that another military aircraft had crashed or been shot down. That would have been the fifth military aircraft lost in seven months by a debt-ridden country, facing serious insecurity and barely coping with grinding poverty and hyperinflation.

My thoughts were not really on these, they were more on the soul or souls that might have been lost. But as the news or rumours gathered strength like a strong hurricane, the good news came from the military that this was fake news; in fact, no military jet had been in the air that day.

However as I settled down to other matters, a video started circulating showing an helicopter conveying a Nigeria Air Force pilot, Flight-Lt. Abayomi Dairo who had survived and evaded capture when bandits that day, shot down an Alpha Jet he was flying on a mission over the boundaries of Zamfara and Kaduna states. Happiness enveloped the country; nobody was interested in the loss of another military jet or the earlier denial of the military, for this was indeed, a miraculous escape by a young pilot.

The jet he was flying had explosives when it was hit, and the flight controls were destroyed. He ejected, aware he was right in enemy territory and would certainly be executed if captured. To add to his nightmares, on hitting the ground, he sustained a fracture in the neck, a strained foot and experienced a painful back and chest. Yet, he was able to cover almost 30 kilometres evading capture despite not having had any food or water all day.

However, critical questions remain unanswered. Are those capable of bring down a jet fighter really bandits? Why would bandits whose main preoccupation is to kidnap for ransom, acquire anti-aircraft military hardware? If indeed they are bandits, is it the case that they have mutated into an insurgency variant?

In that case, are we not at war? Again, given repeated claims by some governors and the Presidency that many of these so-called bandits are foreigners, is Nigeria not being invaded? Is it a case of the country’s leaders misdiagnosing leprosy as scabies (Craw-craw)?

The next day, there was more good news for Nigerians as 100 children and women abducted in Zamfara State on June 8 by bandits, were released. There was no explanation why there were no males amongst them. As in all cases, the police claimed no ransom was paid. So, was it a case of the bandits in festive mood releasing their victims to celebrate the season?

Another cheering news for Nigerians came; that the first batch of six A-29 Super Tucano aircraft bought from the United States have arrived the country after being flown across Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and Algeria. We are told that these are quite deadly combat aircraft that would decimate those waging war against Nigerians in Nigeria. The miraculous survival of our gallant pilot, release of so many women and children and the arrival of the Tucano aircraft were like a gift at this period of Sallah. On Tuesday, Sallah day, there was a breaking news that jammed the airwaves.

After the Eid-el-Kabir prayers, President Muhammadu Buhari, dressed in a sky blue flowing robe with heavy security around him, trekked some metres from the prayer ground in his hometown Daura to his homestead! As a reporter, I wondered whether that was news. As a former Editor, would I have flashed that as breaking news and not the important message of hope to Nigerians the President gave? It then occurred to me that I might be missing the point the President’s handlers were trying to make. He was supposed to have travelled to Britain for his medicals on June 25 and return in the second week of August. So perhaps they want to prove that despite missing his medicals, the President is still strong enough to walk.

It can also be an attempt to show Nigerians that despite advancing age, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, is still quite strong and capable of leading the war against terrorists, bandits and insurgents. It is equally possible that the point the Presidency is trying to make is that Katsina State is safer than when Buhari visited in December 2020. During that visit, bandits on December 11, kidnapped some 300 boys from the Government Science Secondary School, Kankara. They spent six days in captivity before their release in neigbouring Zamfara State. President Buhari’s advertised walk might also be a way of showing Nigerians that he remains a crowd puller.

Such cheering scenario is dampened by the fact that many parts of the country are still under siege. Outside the North East where the war against Islamic insurgents has raged for about a dozen years, the epicentre of mass killings and banditry in recent times, has shifted from Plateau to Benue, Zamfara to Katsina, Niger to Kaduna State. The killings in Zango Kataf area of Kaduna State has turned the territory to into a huge waste land. The Atyap Community in the area announced that in the latest attacks, 42 persons were killed, seven injured and 338 houses set ablaze. It claimed that the community was attacked for seven days without the military coming to the aid of the victims. Expectedly, all schools and religious centres have closed and economic activities and farming have ceased.

In trying to think through all these, I reflected that the country is at war virtually everywhere. In the North East especially in Borno and Yobe states, with the remnants of Boko Haram and their new foreign masters of the Islamic State. In the North Central from Niger, Nassarawa and Benue through Plateau on to Taraba, with rampaging terrorists. In the North Western states of Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto and Kaduna, against increasingly powerful bandits; in the South West with Yoruba nationalists; in the South East with pro-secessionist groups and limited skirmishes in the South-South which is also threatened by deadly banditry.

The reality is that the Nigerian security forces are incapable of winning all these battles or wars. What common sense dictates is that instead of fighting on all fronts, the Buhari administration should pick what battles to fight; rather than run in circles around the country and achieve little, it should negotiate with some groups.

In all humility, I also suggest to the administration to give some listening ear and thought to the Sallah advice of the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, SCIA, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III. Especially where he declared: “It is no longer a story but a reality, people are in dire need of the leaders’ commitment to addressing the high rate of poverty, insecurity, and hunger among other numerous challenges.”

The Ondo State House of Assembly has congratulated Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, on his victory at the Court of Appeal.

The Ondo State House of Assembly Speaker, Bamidele Oleyelogun on behalf of 26 lawmakers , said it a victory well deserved.
”The people of the state unanimously renewed the mandate freely given to Gov. Akeredolu during his first tenure in the 2020 polls.

“We as a members of state assembly pledge to continue to work with the Governor towards making his dream to redeem Ondo State a reality”he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Court of Appeal sitting in Akure, dismissed the appeal filed by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the last governorship election in the state, Mr Eyitayo Jegede, against Akeredolu who was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the election.NAN reports that the state election petition tribunal had earlier stricken out the petition of the PDP candidate for lack of merit but Jegede approached the appellate court to challenge the verdict of the tribunal.

The appeal court, having examined the seven grounds of appeal tabled by the appellant, dismissed the appeal, saying it lacked merit

In the judgment delivered virtually, the Justice Theresa Orji-Abadua-led five-man panel of judges said on the seven-issue of appeal, the issues one to five were resolved to favour the appellant while issue three was resolved to favour the respondent, and issue six was partly dismissed and partly allowed while issued seven favoured the respondent.

  • US Presidential Election: Major setback for Trump as Biden inches towards victory with 264 electoral votes

US Presidential Election: Major setback for Trump as Biden inches towards victory with 264 electoral votes

The presidential candidate of the Democratic Party, Joe Biden has rebuilt at least a portion of the Blue Wall, retaking the states of Wisconsin and Michigan from President Donald Trump and coming within striking distance of claiming an Electoral College victory.

Based on states called for Biden by the Associated Press, the former vice president sits at 264 Electoral College votes. To win the presidency, a candidate needs 270.

Nevada, which is worth six, has emerged as the potential endpoint for a long and contentious campaign. If Biden’s lead holds in Nevada as further ballots are counted, he’ll hit the number needed to enter the White House.

Nevada has not gone for a Republican since the 2004 election, in which voters sent then-President George W. Bush to his second term in office.

It broke for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016 by 2 percentage points.

Trump campaign representatives have been consistent in their claims that Nevada is in play for Trump coming into 2020. Trump and campaign surrogates made repeated visits to the state in the lead-up to the election.

Biden’s lead in Nevada was razor-thin this afternoon. He was up by 7,647 votes, or .64%.

Election officials have indicated they plan to release further vote totals today. It’s possible the state will be called when the next batch of results is released.

Mail ballots received on Election Day and those that will be received going forward are still waiting for a count. Mail ballots have been more Democratic-leaning nationwide.

A loss in Nevada would not spell doom for Biden’s campaign, but it would sink Trump’s if all projections hold.

If Biden loses Nevada but keeps the rest of the states in his column, he would need Pennsylvania, Georgia or North Carolina to win.

The AP’s projection of an Arizona win for Biden has received pushback from some Republicans, many of whom said it was too early.

If that state goes to Trump, a win in Nevada would be nice for Biden but wouldn’t sweep him into the White House.

  • Bayelsa guber: Diri reacts to another Appeal Court victory

Bayelsa guber: Diri reacts to another Appeal Court victory

Govenor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State on Friday said he is God’s messenger and that nobody can unseat him.
Diri while reacting to Friday’s separate Court of Appeal victories in his favour and that of his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

The appellate court in a unanimous decision overturned the August 15 Bayelsa Election Tribunal Judgment in favour of the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP), which nullified the election of Diri on November 16, 2019.

The court on same day also dismissed the Liberation Movement appeal against the deputy governor.

The governor in a press release by his spokesman, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, applauded the five-man panel of Justices for upholding the law and dispensing justice to all.

He attributed the victory to God whom he referred to as the supreme leader of the universe ruling over the affairs of men.

His words: “I want to thank God for this victory. Today, a Daniel came to judgement in the name of the Court of Appeal, which has given the true position of the law and we are happy about it.”

Diri said his administration was instituted by God and as a messenger, he is only holding brief for Him.

The Governor noted that the governorship candidate of the ANDP, King George, had earlier withdrawn his case at the tribunal and equally left the party but wondered why some persons would remote-control the purported chairman of the party.

While appealing for support, Diri described the litany of electoral cases as distractions, stressing that it was time the “portfolio political parties” stopped fanning the embers of disunity in the state.

“For those who are fanning the embers of disunity in our state using portfolio political parties, this is a time to put a full stop to it. If they really love the state, why are they still fanning the embers of destabilisation and moving on to unseat us?

“The governor of Bayelsa State is God Himself. I have told those who care to listen that I am only a messenger-governor. The governor of Bayelsa is His Excellency the Supreme Leader of the universe and that is God Himself.
He kept me here to hold brief for Him and you cannot unseat God. There is a God that rules over the affairs of men and that God that has brought me here will protect me, my deputy governor and everybody put together to lead this government.”

Diri also called on the political class to exercise caution and desist from divisive politics particularly as the senatorial bye-elections are fast approaching.
