#NigeriaDecides2019: I’m confident of victory – Fela Durotoye

The presidential candidate of the Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), Fela Durotoye, has said he is very confident that he will emerge victorious by the time the result of Saturday’s presidential election is announced.

He said this after casting his vote at polling unit 033 in Victoria Garden City (VGC), Lagos.

The motivational speaker was welcomed with loud applause by the crowd when he was invited for accreditation and voting. This was shortly after Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and his wife had voted in the same polling booth.

He however lamented that the voting process has been very slow. “A couple of the card readers are having battery issues because the batteries have run down and they did not have recharge. We learnt they are bringing rechargeable batteries and all of that. The voting process has been very slow and I hope they can speed up the process before voters start getting agitated due to the delays,” he said.

Durotoye, who said he did not vote for himself but “for my party and for a new Nigeria,” said the country is at a juncture which requires “a new direction for our nation and the new generation that will lead us there.”

He expressed hope that the votes would count. “We hope the process will go well. As we see here. The process is peaceful. We hope that our votes will count and it will be a free, fair and credible election. We have an opportunity to vote new leaders and I hope that is what we are doing,” he said.

  • Kwara, Bauchi, Katsina bye-election results, sign of Buhari’s victory in 2019 – Presidency

Kwara, Bauchi, Katsina bye-election results, sign of Buhari’s victory in 2019 – Presidency

The presidency says the electoral victories recorded by the All Progressives Congress (APC) on November 17 is a sign of things to come in the 2019 elections.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the APC swept the three federal constituencies in Katsina, Kwara, and Bauchi states in the bye-elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday, November 17.

Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, in a statement in Abuja on Sunday, said the APC victory in the three states had shattered any assumptions of a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) return to power in 2019.

According to the presidential aide, the APC victory should be a blow for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaigners who have maintained that by merely claiming that they have rebranded, Nigerians will have forgotten all the mess they left behind in 2015.

He said: “By voting overwhelmingly for the ruling APC, Nigerians have shown their confidence in the Muhammadu Buhari administration, and their willingness for continuation of this government and its policies.

This clear show of support can only be a synopsis of what Nigerians should expect in the forthcoming elections, at all levels.

I would like to use this opportunity to remind Nigerians that there will always be a winner and a loser in every election, an individual and a party with the highest votes and another with the lowest.

That is what democracy is about. Therefore, all aspirants should approach elections with the mindset that they could either win or lose.

Accepting results only when one wins and challenging results each time one loses, is not the right attitude. It is certainly not what democracy is about.’’

The presidential aide thanked the people of Katsina, Kwara and Bauchi States for their show of support during and after the bye-elections.

On behalf of President Buhari, I thank the people of Katsina, Kwara and Bauchi States for their show of support over the weekend.

I thank Nigerians all over the country for believing in this government and in its determined effort to pull our nation out of the mess left behind by 16 years of PDP government, and into the greatness that is our destiny,’’ he added.

Ekiti poll: Fayemi reacts to Eleka’s petition against his victory

The Ekiti Governor-elect, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has hailed the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the July 14 governorship election, Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, for going to the tribunal in the resolution of the dispute arising from the Ekiti election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission had declared Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress as the winner of the election.

But on Friday, the PDP’s candidate filed his petition at the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, seeking to upturn the victory.

Olusola claimed he scored the majority lawful votes cast in the election, as according to him, the poll was marred by results falsification, ballot stuffing and ballot snatching.

A statement by the Director of Media and Publicity of Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organisation, Wole Olujobi, said filing the action was the right of the petitioner as it would strengthen democracy.

“Even though it is the petitioner’s right to seek legal redress in his complaint, it is a fact that the July 14 governorship election that returned Dr Kayode Fayemi is one of the best elections conducted by INEC in this country in which the will of the people was freely expressed.

“For this reason, Fayemi won one of the best, freest and fairest elections in Nigeria as attested to by the elite election monitoring group, Transition Monitoring Group, which rattled Governor Ayodele Fayose, who thereafter assembled fake observers’ group populated by PDP members who tried to discredit the exercise.

“We won the election in a very free and fair manner and we have no doubt that the tribunal will find this to be the case too in their final judgement.

“Judgement on the petition will be in accordance with the law and not to the terms of the petitioner, and so Eleka cannot be a judge in this case as he sought to do in his petition.

“Now that he has filed his petition, he should leave the tribunal to decide if he won or not and not to prejudge, as the petitioner tried to do in his complaint to the tribunal.”

The statement, however, faulted claim by the petitioner that APC members and Ekiti people, in general, did not celebrate Fayemi’s victory.

“Immediately results started trickling in, almost all towns and communities erupted in jubilation.

“In Ikere-Ekiti country home of the PDP candidate, there was blaring of horns and trumpets while all relaxation points were jam-packed by a deluge of revellers celebrating their freedom from a callous and greedy administration of PDP that reversed all the fortunes recorded by Fayemi’s administration between 2010 and 2014.”

Fayemi also faulted Olusola for complaining that the closure of Ekiti radio was part of measures to rig the election.

“It is baffling that Eleka, who conspired with Fayose to commit treason by illegally seizing a radio station to criminally announce a fake result, still had the temerity to complain that the closure of the station is part of measures to rig the election,” the statement added.

  • 2019: Nothing will stop Buhari’s landslide victory in South-East – Uzodinma

2019: Nothing will stop Buhari’s landslide victory in South-East – Uzodinma

The Coordinator, South-East Caucus, National Committee of Buhari Support Group, Sen. Hope Uzodinma, says nothing will stop President Muhammadu Buhari from landslide victory in the South-East in 2019.

Uzodinma stated this at the inaugural meeting of the caucus in Abuja on Thursday.

He said that the caucus’ target was to deliver not less than six million votes out of estimated eight million registered voters in the South-East.

He said the caucus would not rest on its oars in ensuring that the goal became a reality in view of what the region stood to gain if the target was achieved.

According to the coordinator, an overwhelming vote that will return Buhari as President in 2019 will guarantee the South-East an opportunity to produce the President in 2023.

According to him, it is an opportunity the region has for several years, clamoured for and should not be allowed to slip through its fingers.

“The national leadership has approved the operation of this caucus and we are going to go for it, bearing in mind that if we succeed we will smile very well in 2023.

“We are going to tag our operation, ‘Operation 2023’, meaning that by the time Mr President wins convincingly in the South-East, the name of the business will be ‘Reciprocity’.

“This means, I have done for you, you are now to do for me,” he said.

Uzodinma assured that plans were already in place to map out strategies that would enable the caucus to deliver on the mandate.

He added that the group would come up with a programme that would take the All Progressives Congress (APC) politics to various units in 2019 while reaching out to “booth owners’’.

He said, “Every booth in South-East belongs to some people. They have leaders and if the message is given to them in a manner that they will understand, I am sure that we will succeed.

“There is no point claiming headship; the common denominator is what would make President Buhari, out of the eight million registered voters in the South-East, to get a minimum of six million votes.

“In doing that, we have to make sacrifices and call some people to order. We will do our beat.

“For me as a person, we will try to convince and those that will willingly follow will follow.’’

Uzodinma hinted that plans were underway to organise a mega rally in the region, adding that the President had approved of it and promised to be present.

He stressed that management structures would be set up at the state, local government and ward as well as booth levels, for better delivery.

“Before some of us came into the party I was told you do not use money to do politics; now we are going to use money to do politics.

“We are going to do that knowing very well that the tradition and culture of our people requires that.

“We cannot begin to learn a new culture when election is a few days away. So we will start from the known to the unknown.

“We are going to work with the President and by the grace of God he will win in 2019.

“However, we have to establish criteria for knowing who a leader is when we get home.

“A leader is a man who wins his booth. A man who doesn’t win his booth is a pensioner. So, we will identify the right type of people that will in the frontline, give us victory,’’ he said.

The coordinator assured of his commitment to serving, not only to coordinate affairs but ensuring that the tools and logistics needed to make work easy would be provided.

He urged members of the caucus to designate functions appropriately, saying that it would be counter-productive to assign duty to people who would not deliver on mandate.

He said, “I am optimistic that working as a team with love and providing accommodation for each and everyone; we will have no reason not to succeed.

“It is your goodwill in your various states that will translate to the President’s goodwill.

“We will take the risk and guarantee the president so that our people will vote for him and he will win, knowing very well that after 2023, it will be Alleluia all the way.’’

The lawmaker assured of the party’s readiness to reconcile differences among members, particularly those from the South-East.

He added that it was time to work for one Nigeria, rather than bearing grudges that would damage the party and Nigeria as a whole.

The National Chairman, Buhari Support Group, Mustapha Ahmed, said the group had been working assiduously to raise the support base of the president.

He said that the effort had yielded result, adding that the identified support groups across the country had increased from 198 to over 450.

“National Committee of Buhari Support Group started about three years ago and we were given the mandate to go round the 36 states plus the FCT.

“The essence was to identify and ascertain groups that worked for the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 elections and so far the base has been increased,’’ he said.

Inaugurating the caucus, Chairman, National Committee of Buhari Support Group Board of Trustees, Sen. Abu Ibrahim, said the group was established to coordinate various support groups to sell the ideals of the President.

According to him, this is to build a virile and democratic society that guarantees the rights of every citizen to fulfill his and or her potential.

Ibrahim, who was represented by the Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Sen. Ita Enang, said various groups remained important channels of outreach between the government and the citizenry.

He said, “Many of the support groups that registered with the National Committee of Buhari Support Group existed before the 2015 election.

“They piloted the grassroots initiative via which the president’s message of hope was delivered in the nooks and crannies of the country.

“As we inaugurate this caucus, I call on all and sundry to remain steadfast in the onerous task of nation-building and effort to fight crimes and reposition the country for sustained and inclusive growth.

“Let it remain our collective duty to restore this country’s pride because we have no choice.

“This land belongs to all of us and we must all work tirelessly to make it better for our children and generations to come.

“The `nay sayers’ need to know that we shall never give up this God-given right.’’

Ibrahim said Buhari was aware of the inauguration of the caucus, adding that he looked forward to seeing it deliver not only votes but the much-needed cohesion necessary for national development.

He called on the caucus to work hard towards mobilising votes for the President in the region and entire country.

On recent coalition of some political parties, the chairman said it was not known to law.

He said it was not a coalition of proper officers of registered political parties but of people with various interests hiding under coalition.

He pointed out that more than half of the parties said to have been part of the coalition, had denied membership of the coalition and declared their support for Buhari.

Ibrahim assured that the party was ready to reconcile aggrieved members of the party where and when necessary.

“For some of the members of our party whom we saw their faces on that coalition day or who may have expressed opinion in that direction, we will not be hard on them.

“We will use conciliatory words because they have stakes in this party. We will not use any untoward word, we will go to them.

“Also, we will take whatever the opposition party says as advisory to and as opinion which we will use to deepen what we need for Nigerians and deliver victory to the APC and President Buhari,’’ he said.

False Asset Trial: Saraki’s victory at Supreme Court shows judiciary is working – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday reacted to the Supreme Court’s acquittal of the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, saying the nation’s judicial system is working despite the challenges at hand.

He said no one should be allowed to undermine or break the judicial system.

Buhari said this in a statement made available to journalists by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

The President noted that Saraki took what he described as the tortuous path of using the judicial process and persevered until the highest court in the land pronounced him not guilty.

Buhari recalled that he himself took the same path in the three elections during which he claimed he was rigged out before finally making it at the fourth attempt.

The President said, “I have seen many instances where individuals and groups seek the destruction of the judicial institution in the foolish thinking of saving their skin, instead of going through the painstaking process of establishing their innocence.

In the case of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, I have seen him take the tortuous path of using the judicial process.

He persevered, and in the end, the highest court of the land, the Supreme Court, says he is not guilty as charged.

This is what I have done in the three elections in which I was cheated out before God made it possible for me to come here the fourth time I ran for the office.”

The President said Saraki’s journey from the lowest to the highest court of the land provided an important example for Nigerians to emulate.

  • Kaduna: We are more concerned with organising credible poll than APC victory – El-Rufai

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state on Saturday said that having a credible electoral process was more important than his party, the All Progressives Congress’ victory in the same poll.

The governor said this on Saturday after casting his vote in the local government elections going on in the state.

He noted that credible poll was more important than the victory of the APC, even as he expressed delight over the impressive and peaceful turn-out of residents for the election.

El-Rufai said that he does not care whether his party wins or loses at the local government election as long as it was credible, free and fair.

El-Rufai said although there were initial hiccups with the electronic voting machine, the problems have been resolved.

The governor, accompanied by some state executives, arrived at his polling unit at 12:47 p.m and went straight for accreditation and then patiently join the queue with other voters. He cast his vote at exactly 1:09 p.m.

  • Suspension: Court ruling victory for democracy – Omo-Agege

Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial district, Ovie Omo-Agege on Thursday said the judgement of the Federal High Court nullifying his suspension from the Senate is victory for democracy.

Recall that the Senate had on April 13, suspended the senator for 90 legislative days over his comment that the amendment to the Electoral Act 2010 seeking the re-ordering of the general elections was targeted at President Muhammadu Buhari.

However in his ruling on Thursday, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, in a judgment that lasted an one hour, held that while the National Assembly had the power to discipline its erring members, the premise on which Omo-Agege’s suspension was anchored was illegal.

In a statement released by his media office, Omo-Agege said his victory should be seen as a plus to Nigeria’s nascent democracy and not necessarily against the Senate.

    Read full statement below:

    IT’S VICTORY FOR DEMOCRACY

1.0. Today’s judgment by Hon. Justice Nnamdi Dimgba rightly nullifying the suspension of the Distinguished Senator Ovie Omo-Agege is consistent with our firm position that the Senate as a foremost national institution should live consistently by example and set the pace in legislative best practices. We are grateful to His Lordship, and indeed the entire judiciary, for affirming once again that ours is a democracy guided by the rule of law and constitutionality.

2.0. We want the good people of this great nation to appreciate this victory for what it is. It is not a victory against the Senate, as there is no war against that great institution. Rather, given his fine understanding of the law, Sen. Omo-Agege believes that there are rare moments that demand the intervention of our courts to enrich the law and our constitutional experience.

3.0. Today’s positive judgement is therefore not necessarily for or about him as an individual. It is about ensuring that no lawmaker is removed arbitrarily from serving his or her people. It is about ensuring that constitutionality, legality, good conscience and due process are the cornerstones of public leadership actions and decisions.

4.0. For their increasingly amazing support, Senator Omo-Agege is very grateful to the good people of Urhobo Nation whom he has the great honour of representing in the 8th Senate. He remains absolutely committed to their fine values of justice, honour and humility in service. His special gratitude also goes to his wonderful family, friends, and well-wishers for their prayers and overwhelming support. Above all, this victory belongs to God and to Him we give the glory.

    Signed:

    Prince Efe Duku

For: The Office of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.

Palm Sunday: Priest urges Christians to trust God for victory

A Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Mathew Onyilo, has urged Christians and Nigerians to trust God for victory in whatever challenges they are passing through in life.

Onyilo, a Priest of the Abuja Archdiocese, made the call in his homily on Palm Sunday at the St Charles Lwanga Parish, Apo, Abuja.

The priest, who spoke on the theme “I shall never be put to shame’’ urged Christians to learn from Jesus Christ who suffered and was victorious.

“Whatever difficulty you are going through, whatever challenge you are going through, whatever is making you shed tears because you have put your trust in God; you will never be put to shame.

“No one who places his trust in God can be forsaken; no matter the challenge you go through if only you remain committed to God, you will have the last laugh.

“If you go through fire, you will not be burnt; God will be with you, according to the Book of Isaiah 43 verses one to five.

“ God has not promised us that there will not be challenges.

“ What God has promised us is that those things will not bring us down, those things will not ridicule us and those things will not put us in shame,’’ he said.

The priest, however, urged Christians to keep faith in God saying “God will always keep to His promises”.

“ He cannot lie to us; He will fulfil His promises if we keep faith in Him. So, see your challenges as a means for God to glorify Himself.’’

Lwanga, however urged Christians to obey God in face of difficulties and challenges.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Christians celebrate Palm Sunda every Sunday preceding Easter in remembrance of Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem.

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, which is the beginning of the most holy of the sublime week of the Christendom because it contains the three most important days in the life of the Church.

The three important days are Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, according to the catholic faith.

Holy Thursday commemorates the institution of priesthood and institution of the Eucharist, the body of Christ while Good Friday commemorates the passion and the death of Christ.

Easter Sunday commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the death.
