    SAD! Trigger-happy vigilante shoots passer-by dead in Lagos

    Musa Yahaya did not envisage he would lose his life on Tuesday in the Ijora area of Lagos State.

    He died after a vigilante, Lukman Rasak, allegedly shot him to death

    Yahaya was on his way to a destination in the area when Rasak supposedly shot him in the chest around 2pm, and in a bid to save the victim, some well-meaning rushed him to hospital for treatment.

    It was gathered that the Seriki-Hausa, Apapa/Iganmu, Alhaji Mele Abacha, reported the incident to the police.

    The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the development, said in a statement on Wednesday, that Yahaya died from the bullet wounds he sustained after the vigilante shot him.

    Adejobi stated, “Police operatives attached to the Ijora Division of the command, on Tuesday, April 13, 2021, around 2pm, arrested a vigilante member, Lukman Rasak, 30, for shooting one Musa Yahaya, 28, in the chest at Ijora.

    “The victim was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The police were alerted and raced to the scene, arrested the suspect and recovered his gun with some cartridges.”

    In the same vein, it was also gathered that area boys were involved in supremacy clashes in Ijora on Tuesday.

    During the clashes, residents and business owners in the area ran fled as gunshots rented the air.

    In his reaction, Adejobi, said, “Based on our own findings, it is unconfirmed. I have contacted the Area Commander and he said it was not true.”

    Police arrest vigilante operative for killing innocent passerby

    Police operatives attached to Ijora Division of the command, on Tuesday 2021, arrested one vigilante operative, 30-years-old Lukman Rasak, for shooting an innocent boy, Musa Yahaya, 28, on his chest at Ijora area of the state.

    The victim was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead. The police officers who were alerted, raced to the place, arrested the suspect and recovered his gun with some cartridges.

    Police spokesman told newsmen that the suspect is being investigated.

    In another development, the policemen attached to Elemoro Division, on April 14, 2021 arrested no fewer than 17 suspected armed robbers at their various hideouts within the area based on intelligent gathering.

    The suspects are Oladapo Job, 22, Abdulraheem Sidibaba, 20, Abdulrasheed Adebayo, 20, Tajudeen Abdullahi, Agbaje Sunday, 21 and twelve others.

    According to spokesman of the command, Muyiwa Adejobi, “Items recovered from them are 3 cut-to-size locally-made pistols and four live catridges.

    “They are the suspected armed robbers alleged to be terrorising and robbing the residents and POS Operators at Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State. They are giving useful information to the police on their various activities and operations in Lekki area.

    “The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu, has ordered that all the suspects be transferred to State CID, Panti, Yaba-Lagos, for proper investigation and possible prosecution.

    “The police boss also affirmed that the command will be more proactive in its anti crime strategies by taking the fights against criminals and hoodlums in the state to their hideouts”.

    Vigilante head, two others murdered in Niger attack

    Leader of the vigilante group and two others were killed at the weekend in fresh attacks on Madaka community, Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State.

    The attack is coming two weeks after the village head was kidnapped.

    Observers said the bandits stormed the town on motorcycles, burning houses and shooting sporadically, and people scampered for safety.

    Sources also revealed that some people were kidnapped but the number is still unknown.

    Chief of Staff to the council chairman Mohammed Mohammed said three persons were killed. One was leader of the vigilante group, Isyaku Alhassan, his son Abdulhamid and one other person whose name was still unknown as at last night. He said the bodies are yet to be recovered.

    Mohammed said the village head was kidnaped a second time after spending over three months with kidnappers before being released.

    Any Fulani who comes to Benue as vigilante will go to jail – Ortom

    Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Thursday warned that he would use the rule of law to ensure that any Fulani herdsman who dared to come to the state for vigilante group was jailed.

    Recall that the Fulani organisation, Miyeitti Allah Kauta Hore, had at a press conference in Abuja recently, vowed to establish vigilante group in all states of federation to combat insecurity.

    In his response to this, Ortom through his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, warned the Fulani organisation not to come to his state, adding that their motive was to carry their heinous activities to another level.

    The association, while also reacting to the statement, threatened to drag the governor and Benue State to court unless he retracted the statement

    But Ortom, while speaking with journalists on Thursday, said, “No Fulani group will come to Benue State where I’m the governor; you people know that it is a lie, they cannot come.

    “No room for vigilante group in whatever kind. When I confronted them, they said they would not use vigilante group of Nigeria. That one will not operate here.

    “We have our own vigilante that operates here; we have community policing in which we are recruiting now and livestock guard that take care of herdsmen in active support with security men.

    “So no single vigilante group of Miyeitti Allah will come to Benue State to make any noise here. For us in Benue State, we believe in the rule of law an we will jail them.”

    Bandits kill three soldiers, vigilante attempting to rescue kidnapped expatriates

    Three soldiers and a vigilante have been killed by gunmen in an attempt to rescue two kidnapped foreign nationals.

    According to reports, the foreign nationals were kidnapped in Yakila village in Rafi local government area of Niger state.

    It was learnt that the gunmen had kidnapped the foreigners who are road contractors working on the reconstruction of the road from Yakila to Tegina when they attacked the construction site in their numbers on motorcycles.

    It was gathered that both the soldiers and vigilante member were at Yakila to rescue the kidnapped victims but were killed in an exchange of gunfire with the bandits.

    Attempts to reach the Niger state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Wasiu Abiodun failed as he didn’t respond to his call nor respond to messages sent to him.

    However, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abubakar Sani Bello on Security matters, Rt. Colonel Mohammed Maikundi confirmed the incident.

    He said security agencies mobilised and restrategized thereafter moved to the area where they also killed some bandits.

    EFCC arrest vigilante commandant over alleged N449.5m fraud

    The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Mr George Mbessey, the Commandant, Benue State Vigilante Group (BSVG), following a petition over alleged conspiracy, abuse of office and diversion of N449.5 million public funds.
    The EFCC Makurdi Zonal Office Head of Media and Publicity, Mr Dele Oyewale said in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeira (NAN) on Friday in Makurdi.

    According to Oyewale, Mbessey was arrested by operatives of the EFCC on Wednesday in Makurdi.

    ”The petitioners state that the BSVG receives its official funding of N20 million monthly directly from the Bureau of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs through official account.

    “Between October 2018 and May 2020, the suspect allegedly collected funds meant for the group to the tune of N449.5 million, using personal account.

    ”An act they claim did not follow due process, hence, the petition to the EFCC,” the commission spokesperson said.

    He further disclosed that the suspect has already volunteered useful information to the commission and would be arraigned in court as soon as investigation was concluded.

    Unidentified gunmen have shot dead two members of a vigilante group in Okpanam community, near Asaba.

    A youth leader in Okpanam, Mr Cyril Nwokoro, who disclosed this on Thursday in Asaba, said the incident happened on Wednesday night.

    “One of our dependable vigilantes, popularly called Emeka Chosen, received a call at about 9. 25 p.m. last night that someone had been kidnapped.

    “So, following the call, he mobilised and took two other vigilante members along with him and they went there on a motorcycle.

    “When they got to the area, the bush path behind Customs checkpoint, along the Asaba-Benin expressway, unknown to them , the killers laid ambush for them.

    “As they rode into the bush path, the gunmen shot at them, and the bullet hit Emeka and one of his colleagues on the bike, while the bike rider managed to crawl into the bush.

    “It was the bike rider who also sustained bullet wound that managed to make an emergency call to other vigilante members that same night,” he told NAN.

    Nwokoro disclosed that the corpses of Emeka and his colleague had since been retrieved and deposited at a morgue.

    When contacted, the Spokesperson of the Police Command in Delta, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the incident.

    “The information we got is that someone was kidnapped, and the vigilante group in Okpanam were alerted and they pursued the kidnappers.

    “But because they were not armed, the kidnappers laid ambush for them and shot two of them dead,” Onovwakpoyeya said.

    The police in Lagos have detained a local security guard, Sikiru Omotayo, for allegedly shooting dead a passerby he suspected to be a thief.

    Omotayo, who was said to be one of the vigilantes at Alaba International Market, allegedly shot at the victim on the suspicion that he wanted to burgle a shop.

    It was gathered that the bullet hit the victim, whose identity had yet-to-be identified, in the chest and he died on the spot.

    The incidence was reported at the Ojo Police Station by a shop owner at the electronic section of the market and Omotayo was arrested.

    A source said : “I am also a trader at the market. It was when I resumed work from Christmas break that I learnt about the incident. Everybody blamed the guard because he could have handled the situation differently. Even if he had a strong suspicion that the man was a thief and there was no means to stop him other than shooting, he should have shot him in the leg. The man (Omotayo) has been arrested.”

    The police spokesperson in the state, DSP Bala Elkana, said the command had began investigation into the “murder case.”

    “The man said he received a phone call that one Sikiru Omotayo of Madu Street, Jakande Ajangbadi, who is a security guard in a section of the market, shot and killed somebody suspected to be a thief.

    “A police team visited the scene, took photographs and removed the corpse. Nothing incriminating was found on the deceased. The suspect was arrested and detained while one single-barrelled pump action with five live cartridges was recovered from him.”

    Elkana said the corpse had been deposited at the Badagry General Hospital morgue for autopsy while the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation.

    The lawyer who was said to be the son of a prominent Ekiti State politician, graduated from Ekiti State University and Yola Campus of the Nigerian Law School in Adamawa.

    Police, vigilante groups foil robbery attack in Osun

    Attempts by some persons suspected to be armed robbers to attack some commercial banks in Lagere Area of Ile-Ife, Osun State, was, on Monday, foiled by some eagle-eyed residents of the area.

    Seven commercial banks have branches in Lagere area and the suspected robbers arrived the area about 10am.

    According to eye witnesses, the robbers, who stormed the area in a Toyota Camry car and a bus, parked near a commercial bank in the area and shot continuously into the air to scare away people.

    However, policemen attached to the banks and members of the vigilance groups within the vicinity responded with stronger force, forcing the robbers to beat a retreat.

    When the robbers arrived Lagere, they parked their vehicles a few meters away from the banks.

    You know, about seven commercial banks have branches in the area. At the time they arrived, activities in the area were just picking up. Customers were moving in and out of the banks.

    They suddenly began shooting into the air to scare people away; but policemen attached to the banks and vigilante boys responded with stronger force, shooting at the direction of the robbers.

    The robbers escaped through Akarabata area, Modakeke; and moved out through Ondo road.

    They were given hot chase by the combined team of policemen and vigilante boys,” a resident of Lagere, Adeolu Olagunju, said.

    When contacted for reaction, Police Public Relations Officer for Osun Police Command, Folasade Odoro (SP), confirmed the incident and said that policemen were on the trail of the robbers.

    Their attempt on the banks failed. One of their vehicles was seized by our men. I have not been properly briefed. But that is the situation for now,” Odoro said.
