Unai Emery emerging as new favourite for Newcastle job

Villarreal coach Unai Emery is emerging as new favourite for the Newcastle United job.

Sport1 says former Arsenal boss Emery has become the new favourite to take the job on Tyneside.

Emery is under contract with Villarreal, who currently sit 13th in LaLiga, until 2023 but Newcastle, under their new mega-rich ownership, are reportedly prepared to pay a hefty fee to lure him back to the Premier League.

The 49-year-old has already held top-flight positions, including PSG and Arsenal, with his greatest success coming at Sevilla where he won three Europa Leagues.

Former Bundesliga manager Lucien Favre was also a name said to be on the table but the ex-Dortmund boss reportedly will not take the position.

Chukwueze shines in Villarreal’s 4-1 thrashing of Young Boys

Nigeria international Samuel Chukwueze was on target for Villarreal as the visitors thrashed Switzerland’s Young Boys 4-1 in their Champions League group stage.

Yeremi Pino and Gerard Moreno scored early goals for Villarreal as they claimed a first Champions League group stage win in 13 years, winning 4-1 in a thrilling game at the Wankdorf Stadium on Wednesday.

The Group F victory moved the Spanish side into third in the standings on four points from three games, behind leaders Manchester United (six) and Atalanta (four).

Bottom side Young Boys (three) remain in contention at the halfway stage.

Pino received a gift on his 19th birthday when he was left completely unmarked at the back post from Alfonso Pedraza’s cross to head into the net for his first Champions League goal as Villarreal opened the scoring after six minutes.

They doubled that advantage 10 minutes later after more static defending allowed Morena to head in the second as he found acres of space between two defenders from Dani Parejo’s free kick.

Both teams wasted numerous chances to score in the second period of a hugely entertaining game that will be repeated in Spain when the teams meet again on Nov. 2.

But Meschack Elia finally got reward for the home side with 13 minutes to go.

That set up a grandstand finish, but as Young Boys pushed forward in search of an equaliser, they were always going to be vulnerable at the back.

Alberto Moreno and Chukwueze made the points safe for the visitors with two late strikes

Chelsea considering Villarreal defender to replace Rudiger

Chelsea are entering the race to sign Villarreal defender Pau Torres.

The Spanish centre-half is emerging as a key target for several clubs around Europe.

According to 90Min, the Blues are the latest team to register an interest in Torres, after their failure to sign Jules Kounde from Sevilla in the recently passed summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old Spaniard was outstanding for Villarreal last term as they won the Europa League, beating Manchester United in the final.

The Red Devils are another team with a longstanding interest in Torres, but they did not put in any offer for the defender last summer.

Antonio Rudiger has yet to agree a contract extension with the Blues, with his current deal set to expire next summer.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich want the German stopper, and Torres could replace him at Stamford Bridge.

  • Ronaldo scores in 95th minute to seal Man Utd win

Ronaldo scores in 95th minute to seal Man Utd win

Cristiano Ronaldo scored an injury-time winner as Manchester United came from behind to beat Villarreal in an action-packed Champions League Group A contest.

The repeat of last season’s Europa League final, which the Spanish side won on penalties, looked to be heading for a draw after another disappointing United performance but summer signing Ronaldo stroked home from Jesse Lingard’s lay-off to spark jubilant scenes at Old Trafford.

However, Unai Emery will be left wondering how his side did not come away with all three points themselves.

United started off brightly with Bruno Fernandes scooping over and Ronaldo also failing to hit the target with his header in the opening seven minutes.

Villarreal took charge thereafter but could not score in a first half in which they created chance after chance.

United goalkeeper David de Gea made vital reflex saves to deny Arnaut Danjuma and Paco Alcacer and also thwarting Yeremi Pino.

Striker Alcacer should have scored when Raphael Varane misjudged the bounce of the ball but dragged his shot wide, and Alberto Moreno and Pino both blazed over from promising positions.

But they did break the deadlock at the start of the second half as Danjuma snuck in behind and pulled the ball back for Alcacer to convert from close range.

United were finding it difficult to make inroads but equalised through Alex Telles’ moment of genius, as he smashed a first-time volley from 20 yards out into the bottom corner.

Ronaldo’s winner means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side pick up their first win while, in the group’s other tie, Atalanta beat Young Boys 1-0 to go top of the table.

Villarreal forward Samuel Chukwueze is back on the radar of Premier League clubs.

The Athletic reports Everton are considering a move for the Nigeria international.

Rafa Benitez is said to be an admirer of the 22-year-old Nigeria international, who has a £71million buy-out clause in his current contract.

Chukwueze, who is under contract until 2023, has also been linked with Liverpool and Manchester United in the Premier League.

  • De Gea misses penalty as Villarreal lift Europa League trophy

De Gea misses penalty as Villarreal lift Europa League trophy

Goalkeeper David de Gea saw his penalty saved in an epic shootout as Villarreal beat Manchester United to win the Europa League in Gdansk.

Edinson Cavani had canceled out Gerard Moreno’s opening goal before 9,500 fans, sitting in the stands of the stadium in the Polish city.

Manchester United made a strong start to press high and forced “El Submarino Amarillo” to play defensively in the beginning period.

Villarreal’s goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli saved Marcus Rashford’s effort from distance, while Edinson Cavani could not tap in after a stunning pass by Mason Greenwood found him in the penalty area.

Instead of shooting, Cavani tried to pass to Rashford and he missed a perfect chance to break the deadlock.

The “Red Devils” soon paid a huge price for their ineffectiveness.

The team coached by Unai Emery woke up and tried to take the initiative to threaten De Gea.

Gerard Moreno found the net with 29 minutes on the clock.

Dani Parejo lifted in a free-kick, while Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof were not able to stop Moreno.

He beat David de Gea from close range by arrowing the ball into the near post, and Villarreal only needed just one shot on target to lead 1-0 after the first half.

However, Manchester responded just after the break.

Scott McTominay’s shot was deflected over the bar by Torres, but in the 55th minute, Cavani showed ruthlessness.

Luke Shaw found Rashford from a corner-kick before the England striker hammered a dangerous shot.

After three ricochets, the ball landed in the path of Cavani who made no mistake.

The team from Old Trafford continued the momentum to try to give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his first trophy as Manchester United manager.

It seemed at a time the “Red Devils” were close to breaking Villarreal’s record, who won 11 games and drew just one in the Europe League campaign.

Manchester kept the ball in Villarreal’s half to create more chances.

But they created one chance only in the 71st minute, when Pau Torres made a crucial block to stop Cavani’s header after a fast attack by Luke Shaw from the left.

As it turned out, neither Manchester nor Villarreal found a decider in 90 minutes or in extra time and the penalty kicks shootout had to be the decider.

Ten consecutive penalties were scored before goalkeeper Rulli became the hero for Villarreal.

The Argentinian beat De Gea and then saved the Spaniard’s effort to lead his team to the trophy.

  • Europa: How we intend to upset Man Utd – Emery

Europa: How we intend to upset Man Utd – Emery

Villarreal coach Unai Emery is very proud to have guided the club to the Europa League final.

Villarreal meet Manchester United on Wednesday night in Gdansk.

He told Marca: “If I feel proud of something in this final, it is breaking that barrier, it is managing to bring that excitement to Villarreal, to take Villarreal past the semi-finals after experiencing so much frustration. Always placing a lot of value on what the club had achieved before, but breaking another barrier.

“Having said that, the objective of both myself and the club has to be: ‘We made it, but we cannot stay here, we must keep improving,’ and that is also very difficult, but those are the challenges.

“In a final of 90 minutes, of 120 minutes or penalties, a lot of things can happen. There will be moments for Manchester United, there will be moments for Villarreal, let’s see who makes the most of them. How many moments will Manchester United or Villarreal have? Normally, United will have more and we have to work to ensure that they don’t have more. And ater, it is about being capable of taking advantage of your moments. Normally the favourite wins?

“Yes. That is reality, but we are going to try with our options, with confidence and a lot of security. “

Villarreal made me a better player – Man Utd defender

Manchester United defender Eric Bailly has warned his teammates to be mindful of ‘special’ Villarreal ahead of the Europa League final on May 26.

Wednesday’s encounter would unite the centre-back with his former club where he spent a year and a half before his move to Old Trafford in June 2016.

Although he has spent almost five years in England, Bailly admits that Villarreal made him a better player and he described the Yellow Submarine as a ‘special’ team.

He further advised his Manchester United teammates about the threats posed by Unai Emery’s side after they defeated Arsenal in the semi-finals.

“It is special. The team made me a better player,” Bailly told the club website when asked about his memories of the Estadio de la Ceramica.

“I played in this team. They beat Arsenal, we need to know that. They’re a good team and I played there before but now my team is United. Now, I come to fight for my team to win the final.”
